Something for $200-$450
My younger sister is starting college and she wanted me to find her a laptop within this range.
I suggested a thinkpad but she said she didn't really like what they look like, but at least she doesn't want a macbook.
From the research I did I found that anything that is cheap and light is also a chromebook, and if you want an actual laptop that's light (less than or about 4 lbs) they're upwards of $700.

My Intel 535 480gb SSD is acting..weird.

Sometimes the speed dips to something around 2mb/s on READ, worse on write. Every diagnostic and SMART tool I've used says it's 100% fine anyway. The "problem" is if I restart the computer everything goes back to normal speeds so I can't just return it and expect them to get the same problem. I can write new data and such on it.

Any suggestions ?
>>
>>56616501
Yeah, I would need at least 2 usb slots in a laptop (preferably 3-4), and at like I mentioned before a minimum of 120gb.
The purpose of this laptop is purely for school, so all that it's going to be used for is word processing and facebook browsing.
Battery life is generally pretty good on chromebooks from what I've seen, but the storage space is an issue.

Setting up a new PC on a flatscreen tv monitor (720p). Have played with display settings and scaling but text still comes out very pixelated, and the image quality is not great. Is there a set up I can use to fix this? I'm using an HDMI connection.

Could look into some tablets with the Intel Atom processors. Sister might like the whole touchscreen aspect.
They're not the most powerful devices but have good battery and will work decently for light usage like Word and general browsing. They run full Windows, I used to have an Asus T100 and it was decent, but really it depends on how much you're looking to push it.

If you get something with an i5 it's going to be much more powerful of course but will probably push you in price. If you're looking for light laptops, you're looking at Intel's U line of Processors

Ok, that definitely helped but it's not great, text and such is still fairly rough. Windows 10 detects the native resolution as 1920x1080 but that overstretches the screen and I have to use GPU scaling to compensate.

Hey /g/. I don't have a question I just need to vent and this is pretty much the only place I can do it. I ordered a laptop a few days ago, just got it today about an hour ago. The listing clearly said it came with an ac adapter, of course, lo and behold I open the box and it's not fucking there. I'm just so tired, drained and exhausted. My life has been a litany of shit that won't quit going wrong. Today was supposed to be a good day.

Guys help how do I fix this?
Not even sure if this will render correctly thanks to it being a screenshot but Windows refuses to render text legibly. I've already set the display settings to my flatscreen tv's maximum native resolution.
Trying to set it to 720p just scales everything way the fuck down.
>>

>>
>>56617268
Changing it to 1280x720 doesn't fix the disgusting amount of aliasing, and prevents me from altering text size. Will try the GPU HDMI scaling.
And for future reference, I have updated both GPU (Sapphire Nitro 480) and Mobo drivers.
>>
I'm planning to start self learning Python. Can I teach myself how to program well just using online resources and books, and is there any kind of cert I can get from this to put on my resume?
Of course I could always just write 'basic Python skills' but I think a cert would look nicer.
>>
>>56617299
I know that much. I'm just wondering how to express it in algebra.

I just did it with a truth table(karnaugh without the table) but I need verification.
>>
>>56617330
Okay, so at 1280x720 with GPU's fancy scaling options turned off and the HDMI scaled way up, everything looks better but it's still fairly grany. This may be because of it being a flatscreen TV and not a true monitor, or maybe because I'm using HDMI instead of VGA right?

Ironically, everything looked a lot smoother before I updated the HDMI drivers of my GPU.
>>
>>56617226
>>56617279
Is there any chance it's the optical drive making this noise? I pressed the button to get the "reader" out of the laptop (as in, in the position to insert a DVD), but the clicking continued, so would that rule it out?

So here's my current setup:
>Music folder on my computer has my full library inside, neatly sorted in folders
>I've copied the whole folder to phone and listen it on the go

The problem? I sometimes add new music, remove files. add album art or stuff like that. I want to sync all of these changes to the phone. I could

I've tried "robocopy /mir" already. It'd be perfect otherwise, but since android registers as media device rather than usb storage it doesn't get assigned to any drive letter and thus I cant select it in command prompt.

Do you know any other program/command for it? I've also got the bash shell for win10 installed. I'm not sure how much it can exceute but you can give me some linux command and I'll see if they work.

Does anyone know where I would find what cryptography is permitted for a particular version of SSH server?

For example, if it uses aesxxx-cbc, is there anyway that I can verify if aesxxx-ctr or aesxxx-gcm is supported?

I've had a look around sshd_configs in /etc/ and /usr but while I can find what is currently being used - I cannot find if I can use ctr (because theres no mention of it)

Any ideas?

What if I want to buy a single card and upgrade to SLI 1070's in like a year or two? What exactly makes them better for SLI?

Founders edition isn't that much cheaper than the cheapest custom ones, but the difference to the cheapest ones by a reputable manufacturer starts to be significant. I can swing it, but I'd rather save the money and put it elsewhere, the price gouging on 1070's is already hard to swallow as it is.

I won't have cash to buy a new high tier GPU for a long time but I figure I could go for a performance boost from a second 1070 once they drop down in price easily enough, so it won't hurt to plan ahead.

A processor "does" pretty much everything. In a computer, it is the thing that computes. The only thing it's not good at is rendering complex video output on the fly. Hence gpu. Motherboard's tell you what they're compatable with. a shitty mobo with a good cpu is usually better than the other way around.
>>
>>56620758
If you plan to upgrade in the future, you'll want to spend more on the board so you have more options down the road as far as processors go. If you're looking for one that's good enough right now then focus on the processor.

For anyone with experience in VoIP:
tl;dr: what firewall configuration would allow a response to a SIP request to multiple devices simultaneously?

I'm having an issue setting up ip phones at my office. Currently, we use a local response point that is hooked up to an edgemarc unit that then goes out to the internet. Our new phones will be registering through SIP to an external PBX, and the devices are all going out through our firewall. Our firewall is a virtual windows server that runs Forefront Threat Management Gateway.
I spent a day troubleshooting registration issues with the phones and found out TMG was never configured for VoIP. I ran the configuration wizard and they registered at the end of the day yesterday.
Today was switch over day and during the testing I was able to receive a call on my direct extension. The big issue is that I was unable to answer the call when 2 of the phones rang simultaneously. The phone service provider can have a group ring at one time to allow anyone that's avaliable to pick up. Being that I had to make a change to the firewall initially, I believe the issue is still with that but could not find anything online. The techs at the phone service company wanted to just bypass the firewall, but my boss is insane and will not accept that resolution. To him: "It should just work." thanks for reading. Any thoughts?

Classic Shell has a transparency setting, and so does personalization in control panel, not sure if winaerotweak has it. Seriously think back to what program you used.

If you look closely in the screenshot you can see that my web browser window has like 90% opacity. I've checked through WinAero tweaker and cannot find a transparency setting.

All windows that get rendered have transparency, which interferes with some media (if you're in a dark area in a video game for instance)

>>
>>56624415

You clearly have poor reading comprehension, since I wasn't talking about a GUI, but GUI support for the settings.

>compile it yourself because there are no official builds

This is what you call user friendly? Yeah I'm sure 100% of the people who use computers can do this with no problem, that's why open source is so popular IRL right? Oh wait... it isn't. You are a retard and you should work on your reading comprehension.

I stand by what I said, mpv is on the level of an early alpha product, considering it a user friendly product is lying blatantly.

Ah you're a wincuck, explains it all now
You download an archive which you then unpack you then run an exe/msi and go through a long installation setup, most likely filled with malware packaging
Is this what you call user friendly?
I open 1 file
I type in one line
I save it
I am done
I run it
It plays my media
I dont have to press 20 buttons mindlessly, causing harm to my system since you're just spamming it to get over with it anyway

>open source
The largest server software, that runs 80% of the worlds servers, is open source
So yes, it is quite popular friend. :^)
>>
>>56624415

>thinking the system should inform the user when the are incompetent

Yes, actually that's one of the four main goals of OSes. Since most errors are caused by the user's mistakes or negligence, you can get rid of most errors by letting the user know about the existence and cause of the error. This is a very basic concept, and if you don't know it/understand it, it's because you're tech illiterate.

Open source means being able to alter any detail of the program as necessary, for the 1% of people that need to.
It is not supposed to mean 100% of people using the program should have to understand how it functions on a lower level to be able to use it normally.

I just need to confirm or deny this for my sanity.

In C++ when you have a function, does it "have" to be before main to work? I've been messing with it for the past hour, and the program only seems to work is if my function is before main.

In Java, I don't remember this being the case. But I know all programs do something differently. Am I just doing something wrong or is this just how C++ is?
>>
>>56624527

It's just pathetic that you're trying to win some sort of argument in which you're obviously emotionally invested by attacking the character of the other guy (especially when you know nothing about him). I let you know two things, first that I have been using POSIX-compliant systems since before you (and I know this because of the following); second, that you are a new Linux user, because you're using it wrong. You should never install stuff via make install, as it doesn't record the changes in your package manager, and that will only cause trouble in the future when you have to uninstall/purge the package. There is an intelligent way to build from source and installing it safely, but I know that you're not doing it because of your very basic description of how you install things, however I'm not telling you because you should bother to read the manual yourself. You should talk less and study more, because your ignorance shows, and I doubt you're purposefully trying to be a militant idiot.

If you're going into meme tech related to video playback, you should use MPC-HC with madVR. This is the superior Windows option and it makes Linux users mad because they can't have it, but it's actually the best thing out there. If you're on Windows go for that.

It's hard to fit it in a single category because it does several things, but for you it's a rendered, since you will be using it for that. Now I can't tell you that I notice the difference myself because I'm not autistic when it comes to videos, but 10-bit retards with huge screens swear that it makes miracles. Maybe it's true, or maybe it's just 1% real and 99% placebo, but if that many Linux users want it you might want to try it out and see for yourself. Look up how to install it and make your player use it, because it doesn't use it if you don't set it up to; I know that there are guides for MPC-HC at least.
