I'm not really super savvy when it comes to hardware relative to one another, so I need some tips.
I'm currently running a 750TI and Athlon 760k...
I want to step up my gaymen a bit, so I was thinking of buying a 1060 6gb. However, I've read that even with some higher end intel CPUs, you get quite heavy bottlenecking.
So, using what I have, how bad would it be? Also, what would be the closest upgrade I should strive for without breaking the bank?

The 750 Ti is probably already bottlenecked with your shit CPU but, eh, give it a shot. Worst case it's not like your 1060 isn't going to work with a new board/CPU.

Quadro is just about drivers, really. Usually GTX will be fine, but check with the vendor of the video editing software you plan to use. Some vendors require or recommend Quadro.

Are you asking about a laptop vs a desktop? If so, you will get much better price/performance and upgradeability on the desktop obviously. Generally desktop GPUs aren't directly comparable to mobile GPUs. Desktop is always significantly better.

Sounds like they expect you to connect your PC directly to it with a crossover cable and let your PC request an IP address from the beaglebone's DHCP server. Once you've done that, you should be able to connect via SSH from your PC to your beaglebone.

>>56604942
Could be PSU. Could be failing capacitors on the motherboard - likely if the board is more than 3-4 years old.
>>
>>56605076

I plugged an Ethernet cable into the single board computer and the PC no longer recognizes it if the MicroSD containing the memory is plugged in. If I remove the MicroSD and reboot the SCB, the SCB works normally.

If I go to the command line (I'm using Windows 7) and type in

> ipconfig /all

It says "DHCP Enabled" under Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection. I honestly don't know what's going on.

Any tips before I reset my bank account back to negative numbers?
>>
>>56605297
okay. you need either a crossover cable or a network switch.

If you have a crossover cable, connect it directly to the beaglebone and the PC. Make sure the PC is connected to no other networks, no wireless networks, no other network cables.

make sure the light on your network card comes on then:
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

Similar with switch, disconnect everything from the switch except the beaglebone and the pc. You don't need a crossover cable in this instance, just connect the pc and beaglebone to the switch with standard ethernet cables. Make sure the lights on the switch come on for the connected ports.

then
ipconfig /release
and
ipconfig /renew

>>
>>56605384
okay, well swap partitions is pretty irrelevant. you can run with no swap or reconfigure it after your distro is installed. as for /boot/efi... that's some fucking black magic. Give it a shot and if it breaks something, restore from backup and try again.

I don't know why you would switch from Ubuntu - it's easily the best desktop distro.

Because the files aren't encrypted. When a drive is 'mounted' it means the OS has access to the filesystem on the drive-- meaning it knows the filetree and all the links. It would not be mounted if the OS could not have access to it. But to mount the drive you obviously need the key, so it is still useful. Just encrypt individual files if ur worried, open them in a separate, clean VM/sandbox.

You have the same normal post cooldown as you do using captchas. You cannot make two posts from different IPs using the same pass within 30 minutes of each other. Your proxy farm idea will need separate pass accounts for each "poster."

I've looked through everything and don't see anything relating to this. Maybe I didn't explain well enough.

The monitors are both 22" and I want my mouse to not stop on the edge. Something like Synergy has an option to match resolutions as a percentage so 75% of 2560 matches to 75% of 1920. I need something that does that.

Add a 212 Evo if you're really worried about cooling. If you want a WD HDD still, just get a green drive for storage and not blue. Add whatever monitor/keyboard/mouse/speaker you want, I suppose. I didn't fill them in because I wasn't sure if you $1300 price was a hard limit or not.

Wew, thanks.
You're right about overclocking, I don't really intend to. I knew I was forgetting something about the monitor too. I'll just save some extra $300 for the monitor and the 1070.
And the 1300 is kinda a hard limit. Gotta wait 4 more months before I can add $500 more. Or perhaps wait until Christmas and use my good boy points for a monitor.

Just one question. If I start buying the components now with what I have saved, is there a risk of them getting damaged due to lack of use?
>>
>>56608677
You could just buy everything but the GPU right now and use the onboard video to use the computer and play some light games if you wanted.

The parts won't get ruined from just sitting around. What do you think they do in the warehouses? Just make sure you can find a way to test the parts you get in case they are dead-on-arrival. RMA'ing them the week you buy them would probably be better than a few months down the road depending on where you buy the parts from.

Well shit.

I'm trying to find a workaround for the whole convenience/security trade-off. There are webites I use daily, and would rather not let them be compromised. Maybe I'm being a bit paranoid, but fuck it; it's fun.

If physical access is impossible, would it be quite secure to create an AHK script to launch a link to the website, get my username and password from an offline database, and input it into the website, therefore automating the login without storing the login details in the browser.

Is there something obvious I'm not seeing?

Alright, here goes nothing

So, I am new to this programming thing and I decide to start out learning ruby because seems reasonably coherent and tidy to me.

I start reading "Ruby: Pragmatic programmer" (I think people reffer to it as pickaxe book) and so far everything was going smothly

But when I started reading the whole list of functions and methods all seem so overwhelming.

So my question is: What should I do to start memorizing/getting use to to all this functions?

I am used to using anki to get my med studies done , so I tough it would be also helpfull to use it to memorize the important functions and stuff

What do you guys think? advice will be appreciated

>>56608158
License-wise you'll probably have trouble, but you can try and claim you're just replacing a broken motherboard. That's more likely to work if the original pc was custom bult, rather than manufacturer OEM. Really the best way to make sure windows is running ideally is to clean install, especially if you didn't do that after upgrading to 7. But it's possible the drive will just work in the new computer. It's more likely to work if you use a paid tool like Acronis or run a windows sysprep.

>>56609289

Linux question:
I want to execute a script on my entire home directory, except for one directory a few steps down in the hierarchy.
The easiest way I came up with is to cp the directory to somewhere else, execute the script, then cp it back. So the question is: in which directory should I put it? I first thought of tmp, but if my computer decided to crash while the directory is still in there, the data would be fucked.

Yes the pci-e ports are all the same size and compatible. The only thing that changes is the bandwidth. You could plug that into a pci-e 1.0 and it would work , or even into a pci-e mini if you cut open the connector.

What the fuck are you even on about?
PLEASE take a moment to learn how encryption works, and how it is implemented within your system.

My 20tb luks encrypted raid array takes about 5 seconds to mount. About 50gb of that is native steam games.

Having your encrypted data available unlocked ALL THE TIME, is not encryption, but a thin veil that you think is security
>>
any display nerds on

i got a generic old 1280x1024 lcd/tn/whatever display with a 75hz refresh rate

if i run it at 1280x720 or less with black bars, does the refresh rate get a "boost" since there are fewer pixels to update? or does it have to refresh the unused pixels too
>>
>>56614896
I meant encrypted steam games that you download before the game is released. When it is, your client receives the key, and it takes several minutes before it can install and then launch the game.

Also, you didn't answer the question. If it's so simple, why not just answer it?
>>
>internet keeps going down

What steps do I take to diagnose and fix this?

My ISP has never had issues before so I'm doubtful that it's that
>>
>>56614956
With LCDs, sometimes, yeah. That tradeoff function is more common with CRTs though. Anyway, just go into CCC or whatever you have and try a few settings, your video card normally will communicate with the display to see what settings are possible. You can also probably look up the model number to find a manual to see what refresh modes are available.

>>
>>56614968
I ave answered it multiple times, and this retard cannot understand basic shit.

Nothing correlates to having to recive an auth key(lets say 5kb max) to having to mount encrypted volumes ALL THE TIME.
What is the point of encrypting it if it is available on boot? You are giving up your key in to ram ON BOOT, you allow anything access to your mounted devices

Download winrmtr/mtr and let it run for an hour to google.

To answer your original question: symmetric encryption is pretty fucking fast, and your drive is likely slower than your CPU decrypts data. So you can decrypt all the data you read (and encrypt every time you write) with negligible overhead.

Everything that uses a TCP connection can handle packet loss unless it's 100%, it will just be considerably slower because lost packets have to timeout and be resent. Any application that uses UDP (like many online games) is gonna lag like shit.
