Redirecting my question from the last thread here
>>
I recently installed antergos and I picked xfce due to it being the most lightweight option.
Now, whenever I scroll or during video playback I get a weird horizontal distortion line through the screen. Apparently this is caused by the screen compositing or something?

Someone recommended that I should use compton instead of the native xfce window compositing. Would it be better for me to switch to compton or completely switch my de?
If it's better to just go with a different de what's a good one to go with? I don't really care about it being lightweight anymore, just as long as it isn't slow.
>>
>>56590740
sounds like a video driver issue, in which case you can try using this http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html.

no. Code academy is generally way too easy and targeted towards people who are not computer proficient.
I'd recommend finding a pdf of Learning Python the Hard Way and working through that first.

When you're normalizing data in a database, how are you supposed to handle data that is duplicated but only once or twice?

Like, if you made a Pokemon database and each monster needs two and only two types (and the position is important), and each monster has two egg group, do you just create 4 fields in a "Pokemon" dataset linked to a Types and Egg Groups table, or do you create a junction table for Types that connects to both the Pokemon and Types tables (and just ignore it if there are 3 or more types for a single monster)?
>>

use compton. there's some guides on how to install it and configure it online. it fixed all my screen tearing problems. it's easy to install and easy to setup.

As you can see, Windows has a very annoying way of opening duplicates of Windows Explorer. It stacks them diagonally.
I would like it to each one next to each other. What program/AutoHotkey script will help me achieve this?

Just got a Samsung J3, gotta say quite like it. No ROMs I can find but rooted it, TWRP on it, and xposed, so I'm happy. A bit snappier than the LG Volt 2 I had before.

I have one issue maybe someone can help with though. I want to very simply remote control the mouse/keyboard on the computer when I'm in bed or on the couch. Issue is I use Wifi Tether Router and every app I try says "no wifi available" because WTR seemingly has wifi turned off (since it's acting like a router). I can use ftp, touchosc, etc, but all those remote control apps say "no wifi available" even if I have the option of manually punching in IPs. Any advice is welcome.

Here's an example of what I'm talking about. As you can see once you start adding a ton of fields you end up hitting the ceiling of relationships Access allows, but creating a shitload of junction tables with the Monster ID seems like it would be a big mess too.
>>
>>56591152
Well if you've run updates that takes a LOT of space. Then there's page file, hybernation file, and system recovery. You can disable those if you need to. If you want a smaller install you should use a tool like rt7Lite to customize the disk and remove features before you install.

OR there's this, which keeps things separate but requires searching and filtering a whole other table to find a monster's typing.
>>
>>56590934
Yep, it says something along the lines of "no wifi network detected" or "wifi not turned on". Everything I've tried so far says that. When wifi tether router turns on it takes a minute and phone goes into airplane mode for a second, when it finally kicks on devices can connect fine but within Android it shows wifi as turned off (which makes sense because it's the host basically) It's just annoying because if i use ftp or most other things and punch in a manual IP it works fine. I guess I'll just try every single app until I find one that skips checking the wifi state
>>
>>56591180
Find an old computer and put 2 ethernet cards in it. Then install linux (fuck if I care what distro. Gentoo or Arch will have the best guides though) and configure that computer to be a router/web server/irc client/ssh server/etc.

You will surely learn networking along the way, especially if you set up a router or web server.

(cont.) And if you can learn to tunnel traffic through SSH that's also very useful and instructive.

Recently I have noticed that while watching videos on my PC (both in browsers and video players such as VLC and Pot Player), they do not run in real time. For example, watching a video for 3 minutes of time in the player actually takes 3 minutes and 4 seconds of real time. Googling for such issues only turns up codec issues with audio, is it the same idea for videos as well?

The switch is just monitoring the inputs without the latency of a computer. The inputs are mono, so you will need to tell your DAW to record each input either a mono pair or stereo pair. Check page 8 of your 2i4 manual.

This is okay, but if and only if you are certain that you will never need more than two types. I'd still recommend a many to many table but it does add complexity for no benefit.

If you're talking about performance then the difference is not really significant. Assuming you set up correct views and caching and shit.

Whats the best antivirus out there? I just installed Windows 7 on a PC and I was curious as to what use to protect it, something that can be pirated would be good.
>>
>>56592057
Yeah, the complexity was my issue; the table I'm working with has a ton of fields that end up mostly being one-to-one relationships, and I kept hitting Access's 32 index limit.

Is this >>56591477 the style you'd recommend? I'd still have a ton of relationships coming from the Pokemon table's ID field, and I'd have to add a number field to each Type to track if it's the primary or secondary (and reject any that go over that number), but I guess it would make it so that if I delete a type I'd be able to delete all the references to it.

What's the most lightweight version of android I can put on a Galaxy S2?

I know it's Samshit, it's not mine. It hangs for at least 10 seconds just navigating through the settings menu and has been dropped at least 20 times.

Also, are there any dedicated functionality distros, like one that's just an mp3 player?

Yes. Might take a while because of the ratio but as long as there's still a couple of seeders by the time you get near the end.

>>
>>56592250
Yeah that second one is the way you're supposed to do these kind of relations.

Not an expert in Access but can't you use enums for stuff like genders? Boolean would be an option too but I can't remember if Pokemon had genderless Pokemon or not.
>>
>>56592125
excuse me but my CRT has a lot of advantages over your crappy budget LCD, even if yoru millenial arms cant deal with the weight.
for once, color quality is as good as it gets. the range of black actually goes from ACTUAL BLACK to white instead of greyish black to white. it also accepts an extremelly wide variety of resolutions and the scaling is superior to any flat display that ever existed. theres also the advantage of choosing almost any refresh rate you desire from 60 to 120, and in my case, up to 160. best part is that the idiot i got it from is probably just like you and uses a crapintosh computer now
>>
>>56592480
Yes. The seeders send data to as many leechers as they can and then the leechers share it with each other. It might be slow though, your typical leechers don't have fast upload speeds.
>>
>>56592644
Oh right, you could store genderless as null gender. If those are your three possible values then boolean is fine.

It's rather specific and long, but essentially, if anyone has a laptop: don't ignore the bloatware it comes with and click on install to all the most random stuff. I still have 1 port not working and another one requiring an elastic band to push the device forward so it was hard to guess if it was software or hardware (I realize it's both now). I'm sure at some point I had installed all the drivers/firmware/etc, but I guess I somehow always missed whichever fixes the USB ports in any of the million formattings I did.

Not really sure how that looks as box model, but you can probably set height and width as empty/auto to make the browser calculate them for you. If you want to have some limiters to how small/large they can be then set minimum and maximum sizes for them.

GPU is much, much faster than CPU. The downside is that CPU's are designed for general processing and GPU's specialize in a small subsection.

If you can break the task into small calculations and parallize them then GPU will outperform CPU by a wide margin.

There's sound coming from my ODAC that should only be coming from my motherboard. I'm using mpv to listen to music, and I've set mpv to use my front case audio jack using
--audio-device=wasapi/whatever the number was
. The default audio device is my ODAC that's connected via USB. I'm doing this because I'm recording with OBS, and I don't want music to be mixed with gameplay audio by default. I mix it together with an analog mixer.
It mostly works, however, I very faintly hear the music also coming from the ODAC. I need to turn the amp up significantly before I can really hear it, but it's definitely there. How the fuck is this even possible? I can understand there being some analog interference like buzzing and whatnot, but this is fucking digital. I even hear it if I pull the front jack out.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00W7KAABK/

read further if you want, but my question has been stated

- - -

I just want to have a computer stick that can browse the internet & do basic functions
the reviews say it lags & can hardly run chrome blah blah blah
But what if I change the OS? Can it be changed?

I want one small thing that i can have all of my personal info, all my browser logons, everything
that i can carry with me, encrypt/decrypt, and ALWAYS know that i have access to ALL of my accounts & critical data.

So that has lead me to two options:
1: A PC Stick - Whole computer on the stick
or
2: A Large flash stick - I mean large as in like, a 1TB flash stick.

something I can stick in my pocket & have forever with me, I'm very attached to my things & I want them small enough to be on a stick.
But no, I don't want it to be on a phone.
Or a small netbook or laptop.

either a PC stick or a large flash stick (with proper adjustments)

WIth a USB hub the max speed is basically that of the port it's attached to, so it's split between the ports on the hub, right?

If I attach the two-prt hub to a 10GB/s port, then attach 2 flash drives their speed will be 5GB/s each (or 7 and 3, 6 and 4, etc), no?

What if I take one of the two flash drives out?

the 7z's were likely created with a special version of 7z called 'torrent7z'
the idea is that it produces deterministic archives, that is, you can rip your own copy of the game, run it through torrent7z, and end up with exactly the same file as someone else who did the same thing
>>
>>56595945
>>56595990
also, if you want to check if the iso is good and unmodified, check its hash against redump.org
>>
>>56595945
>7zip reads the file from start to end
>it ends at the "end mark" of the file
>notices that there is still something after that end mark
>7zip does not understand what it is so it informs you that there might be something wrong
Could be a sign indicating that the file is corrupted. Or it could be just some weird zip program places a comment or something at the end of the file and 7zip does not support that.

If the iso files work then you dont need to worry about it. If they dont then most likely the archive was corrupted.

Why do browsers consume endless amounts of memory?

When I load a page, the content gets loaded in memory, and the javascript might create more objects, but there is still limits.
When I close the page, the browser does not free the memory, but it still loads it from the internet.
Keeping the browser running means it will just keep using more and more memory.

Is it all just bad programming from all web developers or it is the browsers that are bad?

I want something that can skip tracks on my phone without taking out my phone, is there anything that can do this or am I doomed to buy a smartwatch?
>>
>>56595958
he was wrong, yes

USB works sort of like ethernet, data is transferred in packets

think of it like roads and cars, you have one road going into the computer, and you can attach a device (say, a building) to the end of it, which transfers cars (packets) to and from the computer
a hub would be like adding an intersection between them, just having an intersection doesn't cause additional traffic, only more cars can do that
>>
>>56596146
>>56595958
as for references, just do a test

attach a fast device like a hdd directly to your computer, and do a transfer, note down the speed
then attach it with a hub in between, and compare the speeds

Fair enough. But I didn't start using Gmail until they were well established.

But, more to the point, I'm already using Protonmail and I kinda want to space out my emails. My Protonmail one I use for more personal stuff that's tied to me as a person though names and credit cards or what have you. I'm not a fanboy of sony but I do have a PS4, PS3, vita and pstv. I've always liked the system (since PS1) and generally I like getting trophies too. I also have multiple PCs including my desktop (i5 4690k, 8gb ram, Z97M Pro4, HD7770 1GB, 2x1440p monitors), laptops (1. Sony Vaio pro 13, i7, 8gb. 2. Asus 15", i7, 8gb, functional graphics card) and a HTPC (old Phenom x3, 4gb, 1gb GT610) serving to a 1080p projector (140" screen) and 5.1 SS.

I'm probably going to get the PSVR when it comes out as it's a) cheaper and b) generally I quite like games that Sony release.

I've never really been much into PC gaming as I'll be stuck away in my study, even though I love my screens and my PC has most of the capabilities of being pretty decent if I upgrade the GPU. I've got a few older games that I got cheap in the last summer sale but I'm pretty shit with kb&m after many many years on consoles. Having recently discovered Steam's in home streaming, and tempted by Steam Link boxes for other TVs around the house (or connect one of the laptops to them), I'm questioning even more if I should go more towards the PC gaming route in those rare instances I actually get to play between studying, working and having a wife. Or, as a pretty casual gamer, should I stick to PS devices? I'd love to play on the projector with steam streaming from the desktop to the HTPC so if the PC route, do you think I should get a steam controller or an XBox controller?

Not really, well, it's still my "main" email. But it's more the fact that I've had it for so long and it's connected to far to many services and websites, whether they spam me or not. And, gmail is the only google service apart from youtube I still use. So it would be nice to sever that link. Even if I just switch it for another botnet.

Can someone shine some truth on AC?
1. It's binary, as in it's either on or off
2. High/Low cool settings are meaningless it only mean how strong the fan is.
3. The thermostat doesn't effect how fast the room will cool.
4. having the AC run on FAN only is completely safe, even when a funny smell comes out.

Yes. It's a lot like changing your phone book. Or more like your operator. The dns is just the service that takes website names and translates them into their IP addresses so you don't have to type in a number every time you go to amazon. The only risk in choosing your own is if you picked a shady provider they could redirect you to the wrong page. Or if your provider went down your internet might quit working and it might take you a while to figure out why.

TL;DR: I am using a LUKS encrypted partition. I created a backup of the decrypted(!) partition with partclone and am now wondering how I can restore it on a different hard drive (without a/the same partition table).

Before I encrypted my hard drives, I always created entire drive backups which contained everything (partition table, boot partition etc.) with CloneZilla. Those were easy to restore because the state of the harddrive didn't matter. Beforehand, I always erased the partitions and the partition table, but I guess that's necessary.

Now I backup both the boot and root partition with the cmd version of CloneZilla using partclone.
So what if I reset the hard drive by removing the partition table.
How would I proceed with restoring the boot and root partition?
Do I create the exact same partition table and partitions (boot and root) before restoring the backups to their respective partition? Anything simpler I can do?
>>
>>56598591
>but I guess that's necessary
not*

You dont need to backup /boot.It should be its own partition and it most likely is not encrypted as you have to go through extra setup to use it this way

Are your files in a container or is it plain?

This is probably a very stupid question and thus I'm in the right place. I should probably already know this, but fuck it:

Is there a technical difference between uploading and downloading?
Say you've got a client and a server somewhere on the internet. Both have 100/20 down/up. As the client I'd be able to upload a file at 20 Mbit/s. Is there a way to trigger the server to instead download that file with 100 Mbit/s off of my machine?

I mean, that sort of concept is useless once you're talking about several clients at once, but for a simple 1:1 server:client sort of deal... What's preventing that from happening? You need to have the right ports open and port forwarding, sure, but apart from that?

It is actually the UEFI boot partition. Yes, I wouldn't have to back it up, but I would like to have the same option as I had with a full hard drive backup - the option to restore everything on the hard drive.

Of course, I could backup the LUKS encrypted partition without decrypting it first, but due to the nature of encryption I'd have to backup the entire 2 TB drive without compression.

I also noticed, I'd have to take care of the LUKS header somehow.

Optionally, I could create a small root partition (~20GB) and could just back this one up without decrypting it since I just want a backup of a fresh OS install, but I still don't know how I could restore this on an empty hard drive.

Use an online PSU calculator to calculate how much watts you actually need, it always tells you to get a 50000W PSU which will be horribly inefficient for your 300W computer.
Also if you plan to get a i5, get a 6400 non-k and a motherboard that supports overclocking. download the bios version that will support overclocking of non-k processors. it saves you quite a bit of money.

Good, because I don't know how well those CPUs actually overclock. I read somewhere that you can get them to stock 6500 level, but then again that's just 30€ difference. Maybe they go even faster, maybe slower.
On second thought, only do this if you don't actually want to play games. At that point a different CPU is probably better. The i5 6400 is just the cheapest Intel quad core of the new generation.

If gaming, go Win 10, if not go 7 until they stop security updates.

If you're willing to learn something new, try Ubuntu for a while and then maybe switch to the Arch meme or another flavor of Linux. Only problem with Linux really is that your Steam library will be halved at best but if you don't care about many games it's not an issue.

>>
>>56601056
There is processors that you can overclock and ones that you can't.
The ones that you can overclock are, for Intel at least, called [xxxx] k, for example i5 6400 k.

With this generation of CPUs there was a way to overclock the non-k CPUs, which weren't intended to be overclocked.
Mainboard manufacturers quickly found out and released BIOS ("mainboard firmware") updates to make use of this. Intel didn't like it so they all released another update which removed the feature. You can still find the BIOS versions who support overclocking of non-k processors on the internet and install them on your mainboard with nothing more than a USB stick.

The i5 6400 is the cheapest processor of the new Intel processor generation that has 4 CPU cores. i3's have 2, and i7's have 4 cores with hyperthreading (iirc).

Depending on your budget and what you want to do with your computer, there might be a specific price point at which using this trick might give you a slightly better price/performance ratio. Just getting a better CPU might actually be the better choice if you raise your budget by 1€, and maybe using this trick with the 6400 might actually be bad at every price point.

Either way, if you want a new generation Intel CPU and want to overclock, you can get the non-k version of that CPU which is usually a little cheaper.

Should I replace the thermal paste on my heatsink? It's been running hot for the past week or so and I just took it apart and made sure there weren't any dust/cat hair clogs going on.

Oh and I should've mentioned. I'm not currently OCing it.

How old is it? Unless you used some cheap /csg/ thermal paste, you shouldn't need to replace it.

So if I plug it into the router after I move it'll just work?

Depends on how you had it configured.

I'm not really super savvy when it comes to hardware relative to one another, so I need some tips.
I'm currently running a 750TI and Athlon 760k...
I want to step up my gaymen a bit, so I was thinking of buying a 1060 6gb. However, I've read that even with some higher end intel CPUs, you get quite heavy bottlenecking.
So, using what I have, how bad would it be? Also, what would be the closest upgrade I should strive for without breaking the bank?

Once a (non-volume) license for an OS has been cut through a MSDN subscription can it be tracked? Like a phone home tracker back to the MSDN account holder

Where do I go, where do I ask, how do I go about it?

Honestly can't remember. It's upwards of 2 years old. I went ahead and ran to my local shop and grabbed some more arctic silver. There's no reason for the CPU to be at 60C in the fucking BIOS. If reseating my heatsink with new paste does t work then I'm at a loss.
