Well, I tried KUbuntu in a VM environment and I couldn't get the virtual machine extensions working. Also it said it can't find gcc and that's just too much work already. I don't want to think that much

Ubuntu will probably be best as a lazy solution, but Arch/Gentoo (or their derivatives) will give you the most freedom. I hear Debian Unstable is a decent compromise, however I cannot in good conscience, recommend a distro I have not tried.

I use it at work. I'm pretty happy with it but when shit hits the fan, it hits it hard. They fucked something regarding dependencies last month while i was trying to 'apt-get dist-upgrade'. I saw that the operation would have removed my KDE5 system entirely for god knows why. It was fixed a few days later though. Be careful about unstable, bugs and fuckups happen, but they are fixed quickly.
Would'nt recommend debian/testing though, as bugs can get up to a few weeks to get fixed.
