Can someone explain to me why you wouldn't want tactile for gaming? I know the faq says you would be bottoming the key anyway, but with tactile wouldn't that let you know when to release the key so you can quickly switch to a different key such as changing weapons or going from left to right?

with reds you can hover around the actuation point for near-instant actuation and extremely fast double taps. blues have a higher deactivation point than the activation point so there is an inherent delay built into the switch

it's possible to active it again without letting it go all the way up but in practice you would usually let it go all the way up which is fine when typing but not ideal for gaming. also there is resistance because of the tactile bump which adds a delay (you build up pressure until it "snaps"), with reds there is no resistance to speak of

mx reds were introduced in 2008, decades after the other switches, so companies realized they could sell them to retards like you as being a DESIGNED FOR GAMING SWITCH
>>
>>56505622
mx blue was introduced in 2007, what's your point? and you're delusional to think that both are the same for gaming, blues are more "clunky" which is great for typing as you get a huge amount of feedback on each keystroke, while reds are more "agile"

The reset point delay on blues is caused by the click slider. it has to rise past the actuation leaves before they'll separate again.

On the other hand the tactile MX switches like browns don't actually have this delay.

The actuation point is slightly after the tactile point, so that's what you'd need to get used to in order to doubletap them effectively. The presence of the tactile point should actually help when you're used to it, even.

Hey guys I'm looking for a new keyboard to use, my current one is dying on me and its time for a change.

I have read through the FAQ but it all seems overwhelming at the moment. Any suggestions are appreciated, thanks!

>Budget
Any amount.

>Location (continent at least)
United States

>Preferred switch type
Not sure on this one...Blue switch maybe?
I do a lot of typing for programming, which is why I've had an ergo keyboard for 8+ years.

>Layout

>Form factor
100% I would prefer having a numpad but I'm open to suggestions.

consider going below 100% so you get less hand movement and so you can have your mouse closer to the typing area, you can still have a standalone numpad if you want, if this sounds dumb i still suggest giving it a few days of consideration. and yeah blues and greens are great
>>
>>56506021
Having a less than 100% keyboard is retarded and you are retarded.
>>
>>56506052
that's what i said too at first, but sure it's your money
>>
>>56506079
I'm not the guy, I'm just too looking for a decent keyboard and can't find one, because everything decent is either tenkeyless or fucking 60%.

I never thought I'd say that, but looks like Razer Blackwidows are the best ones on the market for people looking for a 100% layout and a somewhat ergonomic form.

Even the fuckin Cherry MX board 6.0 I considered turned out to be a horror.
>>
I have a question for Linux users who have 60% keyboards that don't have a function keys row.

How do you Ctrl + Alt + F2 ?
>>
>>56505852
Not my point.

The point is that it's just another switch, and they called it a "gaming switch".
>>
>>56505991
>Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 (Pic related)

What did you think of it?

I used MS ergonomic keyboards for a long time, and wanted to love the Ergo 4000, but I just couldn't get along with it. Managed to kill two of them in as many years. Some of the keys were worn to a shine after the year they lasted, and all the feet had come off.

I also found myself making more mistakes with it. Initially put it down to being unused to the new board, but never got better. Maybe too big for my hands?

Saddening, but I ditched the MS ergo line after that for a Logitech wave.
>>
>>56506173
Because it's specifically made for a task, in this case gaming.
>>
>>56506195
Nah, because you'll buy it because you think it'll somehow make you better at gaming because it was "made for gaming".

I swear you could make a "gaming toilet" and you fucks would still buy it.
>>
>>56506136
I recently brought the Cooler Master MasterKeys Pro L.
I had a wrist rest on my last keyboard but I don't miss it.
The whole keyboard is actually shaped like a bowl and I really like it. Comfy.
You can also make custom rests easily.
>>
>>56506223
Nah, I tried them out in a shop, specifically the WASD part, and i think it would actually feel better for repetitive fast keypresses you use in FPS and RPG games.
>>
>>56506173
it's specifically designed for gaming. they took reds, which is/was already the best suited switch for gaming (most people think so, anyway), and improved it further FOR GAMING.
>>
>>56505991
Assuming you want to stick with ergonomic, get this:
http://matias.ca/ergopro/pc/
They come with quiet click switches, which aren't actually non-clicky tactile, but are the quietest thing you will ever type on, and way better feeling than anything cherry. They may sell a version with regular matias clicky switches somewhere, which is like a better, heavier version of the blue cherry switch, but I am not aware of it.
>>
>>56506021
Thanks for the suggestion. Not having a numpad isn't a deal breaker. However, the picture makes this keyboard look tiny but I'll do a bit of research on it.

>>56506179
It took a while for me to get comfortable with it due to the design but it's a solid keyboard for the price.

I can't take a picture of what mine currently looks like but most of the keys are worn to a shine and the home row keys along with other commonly used keys are blank at this point.

Also, I should mention the MS Ergo 4000 is a comfortable size for my hands. Which is another reason why I think I would prefer a 100% keyboard.
>>
>>56506239
I also always used wrist rests or the elongated keyboards like logitechs, that act as a wrist support.
I'm afraid to buy these because they look way too high without a rest and a good sign of a carpal tunnel syndrome inducer. I mean come on, was it so hard to make the bottom bezel an inch longer?
Yes, you can get a custom wrist rest, but when it's not attached to the keyboard it tends to slide around when typing.
>>
>>56506277
keep in mind that mechanical keyboards are mostly the same in terms of key spacing and such, it's mainly the layout that affects the size

I haven't tried the ergonomic model but I have used the switches on their full size keyboard and they are quite nice. Unfortunately they use ABS keycaps which means they will start to shine after a lot of use, and you can feel the legends. To make things worse, PBT keycaps for Alps style stems are pretty much impossible to get except by salvaging them off old boards. That only really matters if you care about keycaps though.

I would think that if someone wants to be a super hacker with their mechanical keyboard then they'd want to learn how to navigate using primarily keyboard shortcuts. During a gaming situation I like to hold my shoulders kind of wide, can't imagine feeling 'on the edge of my seat' with my shoulders huddled in to keep my mouse where my numpad used to be.

Plus if you have a job that requires a lot of computer use you'll probably be doing some amount of data entry and the numpad really helps with that.

The only reasons I can see to go tenkeyless are aesthetics, which defy any argument, and fitting into a small workspace, which seems a paradoxical thing to complain about, a problem you'd get fixed if you're going to spend $100 on the keyboard alone.

So the only reason for one to go tkl is if one is a minimalist fag

>>56508983
Having your arms ~10" apart on the desk because you're using tkl and have your mouse where your numpad used to be makes it harder to keep your shoulders square, compared to the ~19" apart I usually have them, during gaming. Square shoulders are generally better than rounded shoulders because they promote better posture and allow deeper breaths.

how?
>>
>>56504994
Yeah, like $600
>>
>>56509336
nah dude, one of the most important parts of good posture is actively using your muscle to support yourself. If you're standing up all day and you don't use your abdominals to some degree, then your lower back slumps into lordosis and hurts at the end of the day. If you're sitting at a desk and you don't keep your shoulders squarish and your back straight, then your upper back slumps into kyphosis and you get that awful velociraptor neck.

>>56509370
yeah, I guess you're mouse wouldn't be right on where the numpad used to be, but I'm sure the width would still be around 13", if your hands were close enough that you would bump into the keyboard and need to go tenkeyless.
>>
>>56509505
you can have whatever width you fucking want, and you get room to spare for side to side mouse movements, for fuck's sake

>>56509330
not even close, but it's pretty good as far as clicky switches. beamspring, alps plate spring, fujitsu leaf spring gen 3, skcm blue alps, and omron switches are all good next moves.

2 key roll over is too little even for typing / general computer use imo

you should have 6 key roll over minimum just to be on the safe side, and most non-shit keyboards have N key roll over because the only excuse not to have it is if the manufacturer cheaps out on the microcontroller

>>
So is typing on red switches really that bad, because the only reason you can't type on them is that you double tap?

If so should I just get browns instead for playing games, but I don't understand why a gamer would need the tactile feel since wouldn't the bump just get in the way of if you know what you're doing while gaming?
>>
>>56510285
People here don't know what they're talking about. I own reds and browns. Both are fine for games. Reds don't double tap unless you're a really light typist with Parkinson's, and I've never had that issue myself.
I got my browns more recently and prefer those because they're just a little heavier which feels nice. The tactile bump is so tiny that if you're typing at any decent speed, you won't feel it.
>>
>>56510315
Which one do you think I should get then? This will be my first mechanical keyboard and up to this point I've only been using membranes like the Logitech K200.
>>
>>56510347
Hard to say. I'd think any switches with more tactility are just a little more "fun" than linear ones, and might give you a better idea of what different mechanical switches can feel like. Personally, I'd go for browns now as my favourite cherry switches, but I've yet to try clears which are the same but with a bit more feedback. I type with light fingers so anything heavier might not be for me anyway.
>>
>>56508904

>I would think that if someone wants to be a super hacker with their mechanical keyboard then they'd want to learn how to navigate using primarily keyboard shortcuts

Wut? Kinda far-fetched reasoning tbqh, you can use and map shortcuts on pretty much any keyboard

>Plus if you have a job that requires a lot of computer use you'll probably be doing some amount of data entry and the numpad really helps with that.

This on the other hand is a very valid reason, I have to handle excel sheets and calculations at work daily, and I'd be fucked without a numpad. Then again you're on /g/, the land of "I don't get why his usecase is different than mine"
>>
>>56510347

You could try getting a cheap tester off ebay of something, if you don't have a way to try them onsite. Ordered one a few days ago, as me and a few friends want to check which switch feels best before buying. It was 15€, as it has a few clone switches as well, but the simple ones with one cherry of each type can go as low as 5€.
>>
I've been researching which mkb to get for my first for a few days now, and I think I'm settling on the one anon posted earlier,

I have a wpm of 90. How much can I expect to gain moving from a laptop keyboard to a mechanical keyboard?
>>
>>56511197
You can expect to slow down as you get used to the change - then, it would depend on your typing style and your individual preference.

Get a key-tester and see which one feels best to you.

A warning: It may be that laptop scissor-switch is already your endgame, because you might have gotten used to a very short travel.

Hey, guy pissed at steelseries here. You probably know me from several post like "I bought this 6gv2 piece of shit" "steelseries sell faulty products" etc...

I found a fix for all these double, triple or more registration on my 6gv2.

Just spray come fucking silicon oil in the switch and and flicker it down a few times, wait for it to dry and put the keycap back on.

It fixed ALL the faulty letters from double/triple registering. I don't give a shit if you think it's bad or whatever, it just worked.

When keyboards have RGB, are they usually able to mix colors, or no? If there's no single white light source, can I mix the lights to make white? I want a gently lit keyboard at night, but just with a gentle white, not neons. I also found this keyboard to for 50 bucks. I've wanted an ibm model f for cheap but this is the only one I can find
>>
>>56517930
chances are they don't have them in stock, even if the listing is still up. M13s are worth 400-500, oval badges 100-150.

maybe even less now that everyone and their dog can buy a case for 25 bucks. the 3178 you pictured is definitely worth maybe 100 shipping inclusive.
>>
>>56517993
>M13s are worth 400-500
wait really I've found like 6 for under 100 but they are all the beige and black ones
>>
>>56518023
I meant industrial ones. Black ones 150-200, beige go for 100 (with standard layouts).
>>
How much are the old dell logo keyboards worth?
I found this one with black alps for 40 bucks
>>
Speaking of alps, I found an Ortek mck84 for 50 cents, with a smashed din plug, replaced it with a working ps/2 one but it doesn't really work well, most of the keys don't register. Tried shorting them from the bottom while the thing is connected and the circuit works, you get the keypress, so I guess it's shit switches? Would silicon oil work? Not that the keyboard is good, it's ass, the caps wobble way too much.

I'm having issues with my Ergodox. My h key seems to repeat very often. It's only that key. I popped the keycap and looked at it and it seems fine. Anyway to debug it and figure out what's wrong?
>>
>>56518398
you sure it's wired up right? could also be bad resistors or dirty/corroded contacts and traces
>>
>>56518596
Replace the switch, its probably just chattering.

Guys check out this white alps keyboard I found for only 30 bucks. Sweet deal huh...
>>
>>56518634
It was fine for a while. Probably the first year or so of it's life. Then that just started happening. It's not wired properly though, I've also been having issues when moving the keyboard from the office to my place; all of a sudden the left side of the keyboard just stops responding. All in all, I think the moral of the story is that the ergodox isn't a travel friendly keyboard. I will admit that it was my first soldering job and I didn't do an amazing job at it, my friend who's better at it needed to help me and fix some mistakes. so yeah, might be related to that as well.

What does chattering mean?

I'm thinking of just getting it replaced with this;

>What does chattering mean?

An electrical contact failure that happens on the switch, triggering multiple inputs. Its usually just some rust/defect/bending on the switch's contact leaf. Replacing the entire switch fixes it.

I'm positive, I used a multimeter. If it was wrong wiring when I shorted the bad keys they wouldn't register like they're meant to. It's probably something at the top.

hey mkg. I need to get a new mech, one that has a programmable layer I can program dvorak to like my poker 2. I need to be able to bring it to work and plug and play typing dvorak on any of the offices computers but my current poker 2 is cherry mx blues and I have already got some complaints on the sound. Also what switches are the quietest while still feeling like blues?

I posted earlier having issues with mine but you could probably get this instead;

Soldering it was fun but honestly, I wouldn't do it again. Better to just get higher quality premade. Up to you though.

Is buying used mechanical keyboards advised?

Which is the better deal:
Logitech G710 for $75 (blues)
Corsair K60 for $60 (reds)
Corsair K65 $120 (reds)

>>
>>56519215

To answer your question, I think it's an amazing keyboard. I love how you can layer several things. I have it so that I get a numpad on the right hand keyboard. I just press the bottom most left key on the main board to activate the layer. I also have some cool config. I'm also a programmer who uses vim, this makes using vim so much more pleasant.

One thing I haven't done is mess with the firmware. Currently I'm using software to make swap numbers for symbols, so instead of pressing 123456789 on the top of keyboard, I get !$%^&()* which again helps a lot with vim.

I only type numbers with the layered numpad I created.

On the left of layer 1, what I did was set it up so that I could command and ctrl tab/tilde on the home row, and not have to do odd wrist contortions to do something simple like cycle through apps on OSX. Obviously you can set it up for windows or linux if that's what you prefer.

If you're going to buy a used keyboard at least buy something that durable. Those cheapo keyboards probably have faulty LEDs in them.

IBM model Fs are practically indestructible, but if your budget is around $75 then a cheaper model M would be the way to go.

If you want an apple keyboard then get an AEK (pic related) they usually sell for around 50-60 bucks

Now if you want a cheap but very solid keyboard then a dell AT101W which sell for around $40 is your best bet
Get white alps if you want clicky switches or black alps if you want a quieter but tactile switch (these tend to be 5-10 dollars more expensive)

All these prices that I've seem include shipping

>>
>>56519713
>>56519594

yeh, Model F, AEK or Dell AT101 would be my picks depending on what switch type you like.

Ms are too much of a gamble for the money now, unless you're certain the rivets are intact it's worth paying 20-30 more for guaranteed working F.

Thoughts on WASD keyboards? Is CODE just a WASD keyboard with lighting?

Thinking about a $40 red dragon, since blues are my favorite switch and red is a nice color that won't fuck up my night vision.

Anyone tried one? Complaints?

My issue with wasd keyboards is the keycaps they use. For something that expensive you'd think that they use something more premium. I've seen keyboards that are cheaper but still have dye-sub PBT caps, while wasd uses some of the worst ABS keycaps I've seen

these are some pretty thin keycaps.
>>
>>56520919
They're probably one of the top 5 chinkboards out right now (magicforce, zhuque, ganss, plum etc), get it with a $25 set of PBT caps from aliexpress and you're set for years.
>>
>>56520840
Barebones VP3 looks like a good deal if you're going to change out the keycaps anyway on a Pok3r since they're exactly the same.

>Is that complicated or simplified alps?

It's complicated ALPS. The complicated part being the switch contact sandwich in white on the left. Simplified ALPS replaces that with just two shaped metal leaves and that doesn't feel as beefy imo

>It doesnt look as good as I imagined

What did you imagine it looked like? That loose action you're seeing is what makes the switch so smooth without even needing any lubricant.

I don't think Unicomp has the tech or tooling for the capacitives.
