"Non-battery" watches are not a meme in any way. Mechanical watches are basically the only thing any serious collector will have. It's a sign of engineering perfection. Cheap quartz watches are easy to manufacture. Also, mechanical watches normally don't have an open face like that, although some will have a display-case back so that you can see what's going on.

It's the best watch and not overmemed. The moonwatch (3570.50.00) is the safest bet overall.

The Seamaster 300 MC is new, but really cool, as are the PO watches.
>>
>>56478624
The rule of thumb is that the lugs shouldn't stick out over your wrist.

It gets a bit trickier with nonstandard lugs and whatnot, and some watches are made to just be fuckhuge, so in the end you just have to trust your gut.

Its very tempting especially since I am putting a pre-order on an iPhone 7+ 128GB in Jet/Piano Black.

It's tested by Apple, they don't do standard testing their tests usually go above and beyond. This includes dropping the watch from a height to 50m deep to simulate rapid pressure. Did you even watch the conference they put on today?

>>56482673
You're new to this.
So let us tell you.

Watches are a fickle matter.
Until ISO test it, and thus rate it, they can claim whatever they like. But once ISO test it, and publish their findings, if it does not meet the 50m criteria, and Applel still continue to advertise it as such, well, that's false advertisement right there.

Why I even bother replying to such transparent 'trolls' I don't know, guess it's a slow evening.

I'm looking at these two watches. Nothing I really need or have money for right now but I really like the design and want something to look forward for in the future.

https://www.stowa.de/en/Flieger+Klassik+40+no+logo.htm

http://www.archimede-watches.com/pilot-39-h-black-leather.html

Any reason the Stowa is 300E more expensive? I believe one factor is the thermally blued hands? Afaik also the case on the Stowa is not made in Germany unlike on the Archiemde.
>>
>>56478549
>overmemed

My Speedmaster is basically the only watch I will ever need as long as I don't intentionally fuck it up.

It's one of the most reliable and versatile watches ever made and relatively speaking, worth every penny.

I would say that perhaps they should be $1000 cheaper.

But I understand why Omega sells it at that price.

Different grade movements is the most likely scenario here, as well as just general differing materials, general construction and build quality.

Maybe some revenue is so high because their costs are so low and their customers are getting majorly ripped off?
>>
>>56482969
They both seem to be using Eta 2824-2. Also as I said the case afaik is better quality on the Archimede. Do you have anything more specific? I don't know exactly what to look at and how they compare.
>>
>>56482993
>They both seem to be using Eta 2824-2
Read again.
Different grades.

The Archi could be using Elaboré, it's not stated.
However the Stowa takes pride in toting that it rocks a Top Grade 2824-2.
>>
>>56482899
The stowa has a better decorated probably higher grade movement. The archimede is a stock 2824 with no modifications/decorations. But if all you care about is movement grade, you can get Mido with a chronometer grade 2836 for $600.
>>
>>56483016
Alright. I thought there was just ONE manufacturer for that exact movement. I'm not very knowledgeable as I said as far as what to look for. Any way I can find out more exactly? Are the difference between grades that big? For example I'm looking at the Stowa and it mentions it has blued screws. Something I'm guessing adds to the price but with close to no extra functionality so you end up paying more.
>>
>>56482973
Revenue is just sales price times volume

Has nothing to do with cost
>>
>>56483044
First and foremost I want a clean Flieger Type A then movement comes into consideration.
>>
>>56483070
Brainfart, I was thinking of profit, not revenue.
>>
>>56483068
Standard – Average variance of +/- 12 seconds per day. Maximum variance of +/- 30 seconds per day. Two adjustment positions.

Elaborated – Average variance of +/- 7 seconds per day. Maximum variance of +/- 30 seconds per day. Three adjustment positions.

Top – Average variance of +/- 4 seconds per day. Maximum variance of +/- 10 seconds per day. Five adjustment positions. Improved barrel spring, shock protection, pallet stones, balance wheel, hair spring and regulator mechanism.

Chronometer – Must meet COSC standards. Serial numbered. Highly decorative. Average variance of -4/+6 seconds per day. Maximum variance of +/- 5 seconds per day. Improved barrel spring, shock protection, pallet stones, balance wheel, hair spring and regulator mechanism.

Pulled right from ETA's site.
There are massive movements between grades.
While you're right in assuming there is only one manufacturer (Excluding some license agreements here and there no doubt), the construction of the movement remains the same, but the component quality varies wildly, and to show the difference in grades, each grade is thus decorated to a different, well, grade.
>>

>>
>>56483129
Thanks a lot. That was very helpful. So I'm going to assume that if the type is not mentioned it's just going to be standard. So the difference between the Archimede and the Stowa is actually 2 grades which is huge.
>>
>>56483099
Archimede has a thinner case at 9.9mm vs 10.2 for the stowa. Ickler has a reputation for good cases. They offer empty cases for building watches too.
>>
>>56483191
If the type is not mentioned, we can assume whatever we like.
All I can suggest is to google up the watch, followed by "movement grade" and dig through forum posts to see if someone has opened theirs up and deduced which grade it is.
>>
>>56483204
Does building a watch on your own come cheaper? Does it need a lot of tools? I might consider going that route, might be even more fun to wear it knowing it's partially self made.
>>56483215
I guess you are right, I was just thinking that if they had higher grade than standard they'd be sure to "boast" about it. I'm guessing you can even email the producer and they might answer back ? But yeah guess googling it should do the trick.
>>
>>56483290
>I was just thinking that if they had higher grade than standard they'd be sure to "boast" about it
Some sites just don't list it.
The retailer I ordered my OVM through didn't list the grade, only when I looked on Steinharts on site when I was fetching a link for a buddy who was interested did I see that it's infact Elaboré grade.
>>
>>56483314
Seems the movement on the Pilot 39H is elabore as well.
>>
>>56483290
>Does building a watch on your own come cheaper? Does it need a lot of tools? I might consider going that route, might be even more fun to wear it knowing it's partially self made.
I don't think it will be cheaper, but you do get to select all the parts yourself, and it's fun. Building a flieger is probably easier than building any other kind of watch since there is a wide selection of dials and hands for those. Also ickler makes a really good case for 2824/2836 fleigers. I think they have a 2892 case as well which is even thinner than their 2824/2836 cases. Another advantage of building your own is you can cheap out on certain things, for example you can buy a seagull st2130 movement instead of a 2824.
>>
>>56483338
There we have it then!
Now, if the grade makes that much of a difference alone to justify a €300 difference in price, the go ahead, but personally I'd see if you couldn't find an article comparing the two directly, showing off any differences in quality there likely is.
>>
>>56483290
Also yeah the watch tools can be expensive too, so it's more worth it if you plan on building multiple watches instead of just one. If you are buying tools, buy good ones from the Bergeon brand. Don't buy those asian made kits.
>>
>>56483395
The pilot 39h does indeed seem to be better value unless again I'm missing something major. Also it's somewhat thinner AND smaller 45mm lug to lug compare to @48mm on the Stowa and considering I have somewhat small wrists that's a great plus.
>>56483372
It is something I will definitely look into but I have to do some research and set some money aside. Guessing good tools aren't that cheap either and that must be factored into the cost too.
>>
Steinshill here, I am really contemplating a Bronze Ocean One.
>>
>>56483449
If the bronze was darker, matched closer to the colour of the hands, then I feel it would work better.

But I like the contrast of the steel and the brown. My only real peeves involve the end-links. The End Centre link is squared off, producing a slight visual flaw when worn. Even more so if you have big wrists.

AND, there is a slight overhang from the end-link to the case edge. Not immediately noticeable if you're not looking for it.
>>
>>56483449
bronze is really a shit meme
>>
>>56483543
IDK I just want a bronze watch for some reason. If not Steinshit then maybe Helson.

>>56483519
I do agree, and I wish the dial was more of a brown color to match the bezel as well. The green number also don't contrast well with the brown bezel and the bronze. If they do a brown dial and that fake Patina the OVM had then it just might be a day one buy for me.

Hi there!

You seem to have made a bit of a mistake in your post. Luckily, the users of 4chan are always willing to help you clear this problem right up! You appear to have used a tripcode when posting, but your identity has nothing at all to do with the conversation! Whoops! You should always remember to stop using your tripcode when the thread it was used for is gone, unless another one is started! Posting with a tripcode when it isn't necessary is poor form. You should always try to post anonymously, unless your identity is absolutely vital to the post that you're making!

so i'm soliciting opinions on an anonymous internet message board for a $2-3k watch.

i fly jets for a living, and there's several watches that we're getting group buys together for. however, i'm not interested in buying a quartz Breitling. or any Bell and Ross, or any of the several cheaper quartz chronographs without hi-beat chronograph hands.

what i would like, however, is a nice mechanical chronograph. self-winding or not doesn't really matter. i'm thinking of a Tag Heuer Carrera, the Omega Speedmaster (probably a Professional, though one without all the chintzy "moonwatch" stuff), or a Tudor Heritage or Fastrider Chrono.

thoughts?

quartz movement with sweep seconds hand. the 16 steps per second make the gear train move real fast and the shit.

"Pro Specs" just means it isn't complete dogshit.

Also, you're there harping on about how homages are shitty and trigger your oh so sensitive autism, I suggest you realise that the GRP777 is a homage to the original 6039. Yes. HOMAGE. That's right. By law of your own unfounded hate for homages, you now hate the GRP777.

Can I wear this during bath time?
>>
>>56491068

nope. which is why i asked between the Speedmaster and the various Tudors and the Carrera
>>
>>56492176
No.

Only watches with a wr rating of 1000m and above can survive the harsh environments of "bathtime"
If you want a wrist chronometer capable of wearing to this often forgotten human ritual i would recommend a rolex deep sea, as a minimum.

Tough choice really.

The alpinist really is a beast of a watch with 20ATM, sapphire and diashock, its specs are better than many divers. I don't know who's the guy at Seiko who thought a watch meant for mountaineers had to be this tough, but bless this guy. So it's really about aesthetics, and in this case, about the strap.

The alpinist is sexy af and looks great in any situation including a suit, but the combination of silver, gold and green is as awesome as it kills your strap options. So I hope you like dark brown leather because it's all you can put on it, aside from maybe shark mesh, and maybe a foliage/green/olive NATO, maybe.

Divers have a more limited palette of colors, generally grayscale, and thus can accomodate a near unlimited selection of straps, whether bracelets, leather, NATO, fabric, or silicone of all colors.

If I had to choose, I'd pick a diver just because it'd give me more options, and then I'd get an alpinist because I want both. But diver first.

>>

That sums up my fears. I fell in love with the Alpinist but it's like one of those watches you admire but wouldn't wear. It's indeed far too colourfull to fit on many straps, and that doesn't really fit my habit on swapping straps on a regular basis.

I guess I'll go with a diver then. Which one now?

Otherwise, various Swiss watches from the 40's. I had pic related a while ago, early 40's but sold as i had no time to get it properly serviced.

>>

>>

Assuming you went into it knowing that the case was noy actually metal, then I'd say you did okay. I have the same one. Some of the features are kind of gimmick-y and useless, but it still looks kind of neat. I actually do use the alarms and countdown timer, though.
>>

You probably have a nickel allergy, which is somewhat common. A nato, zulu, or perlon strap covers the back of the watch and keeps it off your skin, but your best bet is titanium as long as you make sure the case back is not steel. Generally this is only a problem with cheaper watches though as higher grades of steel have less nickel.

>>56502124
ALL metals, or just certain ones?

Not sure if a NATO et al would help you any. Unless the watch is small, it won't cover the whole back, and, since skin is somewhat flexible, it could still come on contact with the watch back.

I think your best bet would be one of those leather bands that widens out where the watch is attached so that it covers the entire back of the watch. (Hope that doesn't sound too confusing.)
>>
>>56502425

A useful, durable watch, by no means has to look as god awful as the Monster does. This is not about fashion, or it being a tool. There is no excuse for a bad looking watch.

The monster is cluttered, not instantly readable the same way a well designed "good looking" watch is.
>>
>>56503304
I find it funny your trying to make this sound like a readability issue now. You're literally arguing that the triangles on a monster are unreadable somehow compared to circles, triangles and rectangles on a rolex.

Just you try to tell me that this watch has any reason to look like this beyond being edgy. What functional use has this styling got?

Being a tool watch is not an excuse for it being horrid to look at or read.
>>
>>56503476
Yes it probably actually doe shave a reason for looking like that. The markers are simple and large for readability. And the shape of the markers, being triangles are arguably more precise at indicating the hours than circles or rectangles. Seriously though, you are still trying to discuss fashion but trying to sound like you are not.
>>
>>56493958
Guys? Nobody has any idea? Again, better to store a watch perpetually winded or stationary if you're not using it for a while?
>>
>>56503476
Triangles are good at pointing things. That's why our mouse cursors are arrows instead of rectangles and circles.
>>
>>56503591
If you won't be using it for months on end you might as well just leave it rather than having it run continuously. Just wind it every so often just to keep the lubricant moving.
