Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread. ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

I've notice a lot of is isn't OC, just copied over from other credited (sometimes not) sources, and many pages tend to link to "Discussion on Reddit about [...]", etc, on said or related topics. I mean, why would someone edit an ArchWiki page to add a link to Reddit, and why does the link remain? Really discredits the entire wiki when it values "Discussion on Reddit" as a source, and when they tolerate such blatant crossposting in their community.

I custom compiled a new kernel because driver support is pretty bad on my computer (old-ish nVidia laptop, shoddy wifi drivers, etc.). The new kernel takes a while to boot compared to the stock one (about 10 seconds). What can I do to fix this?

I used the old config-* file from the stock kernel (4.4.0, Ubuntu) on the new one (4.7.2)

So GNU made alot of things; the GCC/G++ compiler, emacs, and alot of other userland tools, then the linux kernel was made and was put beside it in distros. So basically its like what makes the OS an OS the kernel or the userland tools. Mostly its all just bullshit and copypasta at this point tho.

Should I install Gentoo? How much time will I spend maintaining it?

It depends a lot on what exactly you plan on running, though.

>>
>>56460048
There are binaries for Chromium and Firefox and so on. (One thing that's really nice is that Gentoo pulls the dev version of Furryfox). Probably the longest time you'll spend compiling is if you want a DE. Other than that, compiling isn't that big a deal. Gentoo's package manager (portage) automatically pulls any dependencies you need, so when you want a program, a language, whatever, you just emerge www-fag0t/poo-app and wait a few minutes.

As the other anon said, you could give it a whirl if you're genuinely curious, but if you don't have a pressing need it isn't really necessary. Perhaps try running it in a VM first.
>>
>>56460109
Alright I'll try that out first, thanks for the help.

And I run i3, so the DE compilation won't be a problem

i installed gentoo 3 days ago and have to say the installation took pretty fucking long.
All in all i spent about 30 hours installing it andcompiling shit
~7hours for the installation
~13 hours for the upgrade to testing
~4 hours rebuilding shit with C++11
~1 1/2 hours compiling the new Kernel and rebuilding all modules
~4 1/2 hours using internet search engines and familiarizing myself with gentoo

I really hope maintaining gentoo is less of a pain in the ass

Fair enough anon. You should try to avoid genkernel though, to be honest. You can get by on most machines by just using make menuconfig, choosing Nouveau or AMD and setting your ethernet/wireless driver. You can really slim kernel compile time down, and if it turns out you're missing something you can just load menuconfig again.

Debian sid has better repos, but I wasn't able to upgrade to it from stable without apt breaking. They've probably fixed that by now but it's still destroyed my confidence in debian. Fedora always worked perfectly for me. RPM fusion helps but you will miss some packages, like, higan is still bsnes version in fedora.

When you use any rolling release distro, you're welcoming yourself to rapidly changing software, meaning it might break. Debian's stability is only legendary on the stable branch.

Here's an excerpt from the introduction section of the wiki for Unstable:
>If you are a hardcore developer or tester you should use this release. If you are a power user you might also consider using Debian Testing.
Also under "how to install Unstable":
>This method is the most likely to work of those presented here.
>most likely
as in it isn't guaranteed to work, because packages are updating every 6 hours or whatever.

You're supposed to know what you're doing on the testing/unstable repo. It doesn't just magically work. Also, you could've just done "apt-mark hold apt apt-utils" to prevent the error, and then unheld them when the bug was fixed.

Just install it 'properly' onto the external drive. During the installation process, select the external hard drive.
However, some installers are notorious for writing the bootloader onto the incorrect drive, so it would be a good idea to unplug all of your other hard drives before you begin installing, just so it doesn't fuck that up.

The problems you had earlier were caused by adding the subtitles as their own stream (probably webvtt if using webm).

You need to use the subtitles filter (if using text subs, this is probably the case) and the overlay filter. This usually involves stream labelling and mapping (not as hard as it sounds).

Here's a practical example to get you on your way (shows basic filter chain, timing, other normal options omitted as [...]):
ffmpeg -ss TIME_START -i video.mkv -t TIME_LENGTH -filter_complex "subtitles=video.mkv[s],[0:v][s]overlay[v],[v]scale=-1:YRES[v]" -map "[v]" -map "0:a" -c:v libvpx [...] -c:a libvorbis [...] output.webm

took me around 6 hours to get to an xfce desktop with firefox and a few other basics
this was the first time i'd installed it, so there were some mistakes and needing to recompile things to add new USE flags

Anyone here have a Raspberry Pi 3? A friend of mine is trying to get it to play 720p video without issues. I swear there are people running Kodi on these things and using them as HTPCs, so the fact that neither youtube nor anime in mpv can play smoothly on it makes me think something is wrong.

Just wondering if anyone knows of some tweaking that might not be obvious, but that would boost performance. Currently Raspbian is on it, I think, but my friend actually prefers Arch anyway. I think he's holding off on switching in case it's harder to get support on Arch. (e.g. people with a Pi 3 blaming the difference in distro for the issues)

windows sucks, so you have to configure it different.

One could also use ';' and '+' instead. Makes it cleaner for the brain.

What are the differences between compressed files and which is better to be used and for what?
Should I use tar/zip/rar?
>>
>>56466121
no, just good advice in case you fuck up.
>>
>>56466126
tar is no compression. it just combines multiple files into one big file.
gz/xz and so on are compression methods.
tar.gz isn't as small as tar.xz but xz takes a longer time to unpack
rar is ancient cavemen technology and anyone using it should be shot.
zip is fine, but tar.xx is the proper neckbeard way of doing things.
>>
>>56466241
But mbr is already saved in /usr/lib/syslinux
>>
>>56466273
So tar.gz are best if I want to access files repeatedly.
And CBR/CBZ are best for images?
Then what about 7z? and why rar is caveman tech?
What application do you use with file manager? is Engrampa good?
>>
What the fuck is it with Loonix and arbitrary config files everywhere?
>>
>>56466301
if you want to access files repeadedly I wouldn't even put compression on them
and cbr is just a wrapper format for multiple images so you can use a comic book reader program on that one cbr file with all the comic's pages in it.
rar is shit at compression compared to modern methods. don't use rar.
>>
>>56466301
gz is good enough, bzip2, 7zip, etc offer better compression but they take longer to compress/decompress.

cbr is just RAR and cbz is just ZIP

Engrampa is like any other archive manager, they all use the same backends basically.
>>
>>56466316
They aren't arbitrary. /etc for system-wide config and /home/.config for user specific config. Most normal applications respect the standard.

Can't stand reality?
Arch is bloated, far from being lightweight and userfriendlyness.
