AC1750 meme router.

Happy but lacks QoS.

Never hanged on me once, I reboot it every few months just to be sure.
>>
Archer c2 and c5 here, c2 for wireless access point.

>>56422153
Um how? Almost every router have qos/bandwith control or whatever they put words on it.
>>
I've got an Asus AC68U, quite happy with it. Handles my 1Gbps connection pretty damn nicely, I've seen 100MB/s real-world torrent download speeds and it hasn't crashed or frozen once on me, even with 6+ months uptime.

I've been having an itch to build a custom router PC for fun/learning, but this one does everything I want it to so I can't even begin to justify spending on one.

That's what I'm asking. It feels fine to me right now, I just want to know if it would be worth it to upgrade if it would be noticeable.

If a new version is coming out soon I can definitely wait. I would have to upgrade the radios in all my shit anyway, they all top out on 802.11n like the router.

If you want worthwhile upgrades, don't look past ac. It's fast enough, providied you have good enough base stations.
Upgrade your core network to 10G, you won't regret it. This year Netgear and Linksys put out some of the most affordable 10G multilayer switches ever.
>>
>>56424728

It doesn't even cost that much since the hardware requirements for pfsense are so low. Basically any computer made in the last 10 years, a dual NIC card, and some router/WAP to provide wifi.

I use a C2D Thinkcentre and an Apple Airport Extreme. The geodesic radome increases my range.

can anyone recommend a router for me? its so embarrassing asking since I study computer networking but I only just finished my first year and I am still learning a lot and applying that knowledge as best I can. If anyone could explain the reasoning behind why they recommend what they do, it would be much appreciated!

I'm a student, so it can't be terribly expensive. I play games online as well, and have different streaming devices and other computers. I also live in a small apartment, so it doesn't need to be anything too wild or far-reaching. Thanks /g/

I found the ultimate solution: multiple cheap routers networked together.

Solves load balancing (shove all the guests/phones traffic onto one router), one router for myself to maximize performance, one router to handle all the legacy 802.11g stuff, and one more to act as a cheap gigabit switch to isolate networks.

>>56425552

You need to go on ebay and buy an old gig managed switch, preferably multilayer. Make some vlans, do it right. The amount of complexity this ads with no benefits is ridiculous.

Standalone routers are probably more powerful than the combination ones as well.
>>
>>56427732
>They lock you out of a lot of settings.

I have heard of this but idk what it means since I don't know even baby shit about networking obviously, people are bitching about this because TWC in my area requires you to "rent" such a modem whether you use it or not. For example, I pay $5 monthly to "rent" a ubee modem from TWC that is required by my plan whether I want to use it or not, but this thing is only worth $100 so in the years I've had it I've paid more than $100

The backpedaling begins
>>

When the ISP forces you to use their modem, a cable modem for instance, you might want to add your own router.
Cable providers often use proprietary management protocols, so you have no other choice but to use their modem and your own router.

a serious answer is that most modem/router combo units are shit, either due to having a massive amount of garbage meant to help grandmas to end tech support phone calls to the company, or they have zero features. It's gotten better over the years but if you have anything more than two pcs and laptops you need a router. Don't need to spend more than $70 and just make sure it supports some free firmware. This isn't about freetardism, stock router firmwares are complete shit outside of business class and you turn your $70 router into a $300 business ones in terms of features and throughput you aren't really going to worry about for home use so it's the best you can do. ISP issued modem/router combo units are literally the worst routers in the world.

same here, a while ago i updated the firmware and the thing shit itself.

ordered a ubiquiti edge router x and ac pro

Pros
- not shit that will brick itself from an update
- will downgrade without going through bullshit
- able to limit up/down on some lines and give full access on others, great for wireless and family lines who will upload or download at full speed killing everyone else's internet access in the process
- damn good uptime

cons
- real time monitoring is shit compared to asus
- firewall is all cli and ip based
- more access to settings then you likely know what to do with (both a pro and con but finding simple things on asus and needing know know technical names on this make it a con)
- almost anything interesting is cli based, making it a fucking chore to work with.
- the wireless access point will not connect unless you run software on your end, said software eats data bad.

overall, uptime and reliability are king, and this edge wins, though can't argue with an access point powered through poe and a 100 foot cable and moving it to make sure i get signal is nice, largely un needed due to range, but nice none the less.

Does that thing have WPS? Turn it off ASAP, and confirm that it is really off using an independent tool. Then change your WPA2 passphrase. Because you're using WPA2, right?

WPS is riddled with security problems and some vendors don't have a way to turn it off or make the button just for show - it doesn't really turn the feature off.
>>
>>56427586
what you have is likely a modem/router combo.
Most SOHO routers are actually router/firewall/switches/wireless access points in one device.

The modem converts your ethernet frames to whatever your ISP uses. (varies)
The router is used primarily for NATing. This allows you to use multiple private addresses and have them share a single public IP. The router is also used as your gateway. Some will allow multiple VLANs which require a gateway to talk to each other. Since it is unlikely you that you will have more than one router it will just be forwarding everything to your ISP. So the home router doesnt do much routing really. Log into your router and look at its default route. It will be your ISP.
The built-in switch is used to so you can connect multiple devices to your network.
The access point is used for WiFi.
The firewall (if yours has this feature) can block/allow traffic based on rules.

In enterprise environments these are all usually separate devices.

WRT1900ACS here, have issues with both 2.4 and 5GHz bands where the 2.4GHz will just stop working and 5GHz speed drops randomly. Running OpenWRT as well. Other then that it works fine over cable.

Asus RT-N18U.

Pretty solid, rock stable. I'm using the stock fw since I need the hw NAT. Tends to overheat a bit, but it's a nice router.

>b-but no 802.11ac!
Yeah well I only need the wireless network to shitpost on 4chan and on some forums. I needed something that can provide stable Internet service (500/200) for two PCs with GigabitEthernet connections,

>b-but AC is future-proof!
Well, I wouldn't use it anyway, even in the future.

You need a modem if you need to modulate/demodulate the signal coming from the copper cable (adsl/vdsl), and then a router to route traffic through the modem. Newer stuff like Fiber usually has your ISP or whoever does the wiring in your town/city install a fiber end point which doesn't require a modem, usually has a bunch of rj45 jacks on it, and just requires a router to connect to that end point and route internet traffic through it.

MAC and Cisco user.

Have you said hello to the NSA recently ?

buying a router this week, budget is $120 max, preferably.

thinking about ASUS RT-AC66U

ISP is "up to 50 mbps", also getting a 8x4 modem

should be an excellent upgrade from our 802.11g router and docsis 2.0 modem (maximum 38mbps advertised for the modem alone, lol)

That router is fine, but why that router if you can't use the 802.11ac speed?
The N18U (that I'm using) would be perfect for you imo.

Nighthawk X4S

Insanely fast, gets constant 1300mbps through 3 walls and covers most of my 4-acre property with decent reception.

I was thinking of buying this, but I am aware to never trust /g/... so, opinions?
