Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread. ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

On a scale of 1 to 10 how big a pain in the dick is it to use Gentoo as your main OS? (Mint being about a 2)

Used Mint for the past year and want something that'll allow me to learn more about Linux.

What should I go for? Gentoo or something else?
>>
>>56411496

Gentoo would be 8

Start using the terminal for everything and learn shell scripting. The more you learn about what program does what and how, the more you learn what your system actually does.

Shit, fucked that up
Note, use void if you want but I dont
It seems neat but im just memeing because its 'obscure', apparantly
>>
>>56411496
Gentoo isn't that hard, but it's tedious to update. You could go for something like Arch, but you'll get meme'd on.

TempleOS
>>
>>56411503
So what would be like 5 or 6?

>>56411533
I can use bash well, about 50% of my job involves using the terminal, so all good on that front, but I don't get much of what goes on under the hood (i.e. how the OS actually works, what makes what function, etc)
>>
>>56411571
In that case, you could really try Linux From Scratch. It's like a toy that guides you to build your own kernel.
>>

I installed funtoo today. It wasn't that hard to install but it took a lot of time to compile xorg, like really.

They proved they care more about revenue than privacy. Besides ubuntu is a steaming pile of garbage. 16.04 is the worst yet, so many issues flooding this board. I have little personal experience with it, so I'm going off of that. My mouse died the minute I installed 16.04, though. It's probably a coincidence, but it made me mad just the same. Debian though, it gets worse and worse. it used to be good but now everytime I use it I run into so much shit with apt (all fixable, but still) that I just decided to stop. Haven't had many issues with portage. Sometimes you have to fuck around with use flags but that's just how portage works. None of that "lol, is it okay if I remove your whole fucking system on an upgrade?" shit that apt has. Keep in mind this is debian sid I'm talking about, stable debian is still good.

A USB stick.

An external storage device that one plugs into the computer via a USB port.

Like if you need to move files from one computer to another or just want a quick, easy backup.

In the interests of full disclosure, I will tell you it's partitioned like

> sdx1: big ext4 partition
> sdx2: ext2 partition mounted on /boot
> sdx3: fat32 partition mounted on /boot/efi

I reiterate, this was working fine yesterday and I changed NOTHING. It just shat the bed for no reason at all.

Never encountered such problems.
And when those problems happen, it was usually the users fault for broking something beforehand.

Regarding upgrading the system, it's usually the above thing all over again. Dumb user accidentaly removes a needed file, etc etc
>>
>>56412489
I decided to give debian another chance yesterday. I installed stable, changed my sources.list (after updating to latest stable first) and ran apt full-upgrade.

Apt broke itself. System became unuseable completely, and had to reinstall stable (in order to install a different distro).

>>56412160
Yes. I wouldn't have been able to install Linux at all if I didn't.

I can boot into liveUSBs with no problem. I could just reinstall grub from the liveUSB (something I did last time I tried this method, two years ago) but I do not want to have to go to that trouble. This should just werk.

I need this computer for school. I no longer have the time to fuck around with my bootloader and waste whole days troubleshooting.
>>
>>56411496
1. I seriously have more problems with Windows 7 than Gentoo. Although setting Gentoo up does take a bit of time.

While I have had problems, in comparison to any other operating systems there are less, and easier to fix.

Debian is like a 3, Arch is a 6 on old supported hardware, and an 8 on newer hardware (like gay-ming laptops. Gentoo is about a point more difficult than arch, but is surprisingly easy if you already know how to use bash since most of the installing is just copy/paste from the wiki. However, Gentoo is time consuming because of compile times. Still, i would highly recommend Gentoo since USE flags are very handy and save disk space, plus compiled programs are much faster and use less memory.

non-dkms: faster install, no compilation needed, likely only provided for the stock kernel
dkms: needs to be recompiled when updating your kernel, but will work with any kernel

basically, if you use the stock kernel, you don't need to use the dkms version
>>
>>56420268
is version 1.5.3 current? or can you recommend a link for it?
>>
>>56420278
So only a faster install is the benefit then? Thanks!

And with stock kernel, do you mean only 4.7.2, or what is current now so you can switch to grsec or zen freely and retain your drivers, but not be able to use the 4.8 release candidates? Or are the non-dkms packages purely for the main 'linux' package, so not for the 4.8 kernel, not for grsec or zen?
>>
>>56420324
by stock kernel i mean the "-ARCH" ones in the official repos, usually there's an -lts version as well, as that is also a stock kernel
for custom kernels or kernels from the aur (-ck, -lqx, etc), you will need to use the dkms versions of kernel modules (sometimes your module has an aur version for your non-stock kernel, for example, nvidia-ck for linux-ck)

i personally use and recommend seperate prefixes on a per-game basis
makes it easier to;
- make game-specific tweaks
- backup and transfer individual games between installs
- cleanly delete games

as for locale, just do this (pic)

I'm asking for what compression format is good.
Recently I backed up my SD card to a tarball, and every time I tried to access a file it took too long.

here the memes

meme: insecure because it just holds back packages for stability
... which isnt true, Manjaro has branches like Debian; stable, testing, unstable, where unstable is as up to date as arch

meme: insecure because they constantly forget to update ssl certificates
... which isn't ture, they just have a bad cert deliverer

meme: they told users to turn back their system clock to solve the ssl issue
... which is true and actually creepy

The good parts:
Core packages get checked (for stable), so it's basically Arch without breaking things.
Many community spins such as bspwm, i3, openbox whatever you want.
Systemd free spins that use OpenRC.

Pretty cool for a quick Arch based OS that just works or for the first footsteps into the Arch direction.
>>
>>56421532

you could also consider squashfs, a read-only compressed filesystem format like 7z/rar/etc, but it supports random-accessibility (extracting a single file requires only accessing the parts of the squashfs file containing that file), and mountability (you can mount it to a folder like other filesystems)
combined with overlayfs you can even run games out of it without extracting at all

I have been using it as my main work computer for years and never experienced that bug, so I'd say yes. May be hardware specific, though.

Else you can create non-solid archives.

Need your help, /flgt/

I'm doing a Linux Install Party soon and need some help in finding a partition scheme that just werks on evertyhing, from GPT+UEFI to BIOS. Besides / (and /swap for noram fags), do I just need /boot or /boot/efi? What filesystems should those partitions use?

How do I uninstall my current Linux and replace it with another distro, all while keeping my windows partition?

Make live USB, boot from it, format / and keep /home.

I like it, but it seems like the beard on the wildebeest is too detailed. It would probably look better minus the beard.

It doesn't work anyway. Nearly all rm versions require a long argument and sudo to modify /.

You could save time and just install Gentoo.

Why does genkernel have automatically on the x64 option when building a kernel?
All the builds failed on my toaster because it's automatically on, and i wasted time troubleshooting the building because i forgot how to invoke the config.

What if I use a Linux kernel without GNU utilities?
How is the name GNU/Linux justified in that case?

Try it.

Thanks for the link. I'm assuming most people will be bringing in laptops that already have Windows and want to dual-boot. So I'll have to resize Windows and then boot the pen and choose the partition scheme manually to keep the Windows partitions.
My problem is, Ubuntu Gnome (the distro I chose) does not have an LVM option in the manual partitioning section of the installer, and because Windows has a tendency to use 3 partitions I'll be kind of screwed on MBR disks. Obviously Arch doesn't cover this.

I'll try to find it.

it's not and nobody asks you to use it then. but as you would know if you tried, its a pretty bad idea outside of some very niche applications.

You can mkfs.fat, I believe. All automatic.
If you're not sure about partitioning, set up your partitions with Gparted beforehand.
Create a partition of say 512MB for /boot (filesystem fat32 or ext2 or what have you), optional SWAP, one for /, and optional others.
All data partitions (like /) don't require anything other than hitting apply in Gparted. The /boot partition only requires you to right-click, manage flags and set ESP flag. That's it.

Don't forget to use a GPT partition table for UEFI booting.
