Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread. ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

Is there anything I can do for ubuntu to make my computer faster?
More specifically torrents. I'm using transmission right now and it's pissing me off. I'm currently downloading something and it's connecting to like 50 peers but the speed is less than 50kbps.
I tested the same torrent on my other laptop (Windows 8.1) on qbittorrent and it goes up to 600kbps. Huge difference.
Is it transmission? Is it the OS? Is it the computer?

Hello guys. I come here with a compiling problem with gcc that I hope someone can help me with, because I've been splitting my hairs for a few hours now. I've used Linux for a few months now but I've never really had to deal with trouble shooting compiler stuff.

Summary:

I'm on Debian Testing. My gcc version is 6.1.1. I need to compile CERN's "ROOT" program from source, the 5.34.34 version, specifically. Link is here: https://root.cern.ch/content/release-53434

However, when I follow the instructions with make, I get this error halfway through compiling

In file included from /home/anon/CERN_root/root/cint/cint/src/dict/libstrm.h:37:0,
from /home/anon/CERN_root/root/cint/cint/src/dict/libstrm.cxx:14:
cint/cint/lib/stream/iostrm.h:24:22: fatal error: iostream.h: No such file or directory
#include <iostream.h>
^
compilation terminated.
Makefile:635: recipe for target 'cint/cint/src/dict/libstrm.o' failed
make[1]: *** [cint/cint/src/dict/libstrm.o] Error 1
make[1]: *** Waiting for unfinished jobs....

and further down

make[1]: Leaving directory '/home/anon/CERN_root/make_build'
cp: cannot stat '/home/anon/CERN_root/root/cint/iosenum/iosenum.linuxx8664gcc': No such file or directory
/home/anon/CERN_root/root/cint/cint/Module.mk:309: recipe for target 'cint/cint/include/iosenum.h' failed
make: *** [cint/cint/include/iosenum.h] Error 1
make: *** Waiting for unfinished jobs....

And when trying it with cmake, I get this halfway:

http://pastebin.com/WSK1zi22

I know the answer might be staring me right in the face with these error messages, but I really can't make sense of them. I've searched online for a long time and can't seem to find out the right solution. I've read somewhere that I should try using a different version of GCC (4.8), and while debian says it is installed, it doesn't seem to get recognized as a valid variable when compiling.

Pls help.

If I wanted to try it with gcc 4.8 (because that's apparently what they built it with), how can I tell gcc to use that version at compile time?

When I try aptitude search gcc-4.8-base , I get the result that it is in fact installed. However it is nowhere to be seen in /usr/bin/ when I checked, just gcc (which is a symlink to gcc-6), gcc5, and gcc6.

How can I tell Debian to use that ancient version of gcc, if only temporarily?

I have a mesozoic-era Dell Latitude E6400 with Intel 5100 AGN. I dual-booted Ubuntu16.04.1 with my existing Windows 10 partition. I deviated from the usual newbie way by 1) Setting up a guided core install using the Ubuntu Minimal ISO, and 2) Doing
sudo apt install --no-install-recommends ubuntu-desktop
from the commandline. I chose this path because I wanted my system to be as """bloat-free""" as possible.

Bloat-free my ass. I had to install a lot of shit to make the system usable. Out of the box:
- Unity Dash was useless. No items shown whatsoever.
- No power indicator applet
- No nm-applet
- A TON of other issues that I don't remember about because I kinda sleepwalked through Googling and fixing them,
sudo apt install
ing a TON of dependencies.

Sorry, I just had to vent. I have things mostly under control now, but I don't think I'll go this way when I upgrade to 16.10 (from scratch).

Anyway, I have a lingering issue. My Wifi is very unstable. It does not disconnect from the router, but I get a lot of "Server not found" messages in Firefox and "Temporary failure resolving" during apt updates. As per Google, I tried temporarily disabling 802.11n, but it the issue persists.

There is only a handful of core distributions. They all differ regarding some key features which define a distribution: release scheme, packaging philosophy, package manager, software philisophy (sticking to free software).

There are Debian (or Ubuntu, special case), Fedora, Arch, Gentoo, OpenSUSE. All the other distributions are either spin-offs from those or some relatively obscure, niche distribution which caters only to specific people. If you were one of those people, you'd know about those distributions and you wouldn't ask such questions.

Times that retarded question has been answered in this thread: 531.
>>
>>56404115
I replied for the new copypasta
I've tried arch/gentto, and I can say those two took time, hence a time sink.
Gentoo require you to compile everything.
And arch is just plain GNU/Linux with the minimum packages you need, to get started.
Setting it up takes about 20-30 min if everything went right, and mostly do.
The time sink coming from installing and setting up the rest of the system.
Which takes about 1-2 hours.
>>56404130
Xubuntu is fine, you could go for other *buntu, mint or elementary.
Try OpenSUSE/Fedora.
Right now I'm trying Remix and It's fine.

I'm a total newbie to linux, but just out of my passing interest in it I spent like an hour or two spread over a few days reading distro watch, and looked at a few of those images characterizing different distros just out of interest.

Personally, I like to install NetworkManager on my computers (specially those with WiFi,such as laptop, netbooks), because It is a service, and it reconnects the network If something happens.

Given they take the time to select good units, replace worn parts, get a new battery or screen if necessary, flash the bios for you, install a new FOSS wifi chip, and upgrade the drive and memory if you want, I would say it is worth the money for someone who doesn't have the tools on hand and wants a FOSS system for whatever reason.

Having tackled a very rough used T410 in my shop for a couple days now, I wish I would have just shelled out for a better quality refurb or paid someone to do the work. I make too much money at work to bother futzing around with this stuff on my weekend afternoons.

They are literally common as dirt. Price is somewhat higher than average a year ago, but for $250 you can have your pick of an A or B+ quality unit from many desirable models. You don't even have to go to the ebay shtetle if you don't want. Amazon, Newegg, and others with a return policy have plenty to spare.

IMHO FOSS still comes at a rather outrageous markup because it's so niche. Not a lot of demand and those who want it will shell out stupid money or do it themselves. I suspect much more of the latter. X60 is hard to come by because it's trivially easy to flash.

Which input driver are you using? Libinput can do that easily, but for the Synaptics one you need a separate daemon running. I doubt that Xfce exposes either through a GUI config tool.
Look up online how to enable that option.

Do you need a partition table to install linux? I know you don't need the disc formatted prior, but what about partition table?

yes. you can't add a partition without a table, so can't use the disk

whats the best command to wipe all data and delete all fs and partitions?

you may want to use shred or write /dev/urandom multiple times on the entire disk, then write /dev/zero to the entire disk

No idea. Just create an Xorg config file or run the appropriate xinput command upon startup.

SOME1 PLS HELB!!!

>try to install debian
>worked fine when skipping this
>no wifi in os because needs proprietary firmware
>don't know where to get firmware
>try to reinstall
>still nothing
>no ethernet cable to manually install
>have windows 8 still

WHAT DO???
>>
>>56410484
Yes, it should work. just run wifi-menu and select your network. I did it before and had no issues
>>
>>56410486
That's what you get for using Debian.
>>
>>56410508
wifi-menu just gives me "Invalid interface specification"

run 'ip link' to find the wireless interface, and if it's set to DOWN then run 'ip link set (interface) up'

http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/cd-including-firmware/
use the fucking non-free iso.

Or firmware standalone
https://wiki.debian.org/Firmware

there may be an option to add a server for firmware , i dont know never had this problem.
>>
>>56410222

This is the part you may want if you don't want to download a new iso
>Before starting the installation process on hardware unfamiliar to you, a suggestion is to download the firmware tarball for your installation and unpack it into a directory named "firmware" in the root of a removable storage device. When the installer starts, it will automatically find the firmware files in the directory on the removable storage and, if needed, install the firmware for your hardware. The link to the firmware download for your Debian version is http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/firmware/.

I agree, Arch sucks. Use Wifi instead.

I like Arch for the build your own OS idea but can't make heads or tails of it.
Debian and my graphics card don't mix well.
Don't you dare fucking say Gentoo.

I might fall for mint.

Good distro for beginners?

I went for manjaro after testing some other beginner distros. I'd say its worth a try.

It has a minimal endurance of 200TB, so only shredding it a few times shouldn't hurt 'too' much

I'm really new to linux. I really want to get into it because I want to use Arch to build a simple light GUI OS that's mainly terminal based.
Where the fuck do I start?
>>
>>56410794
Debian still giving me problems. Windows 8 still there in case I need to download stuff (which I do since I'm trying out what >>56410661 suggested.
>>

Try Manjaro.
>>
>>56410887
This better not be debian all over again.
>>
>>56410866
Play around with some distros, take a look at ones you like the look of or the philosophy of and just dive right in. Get some virtual machines running and install ones you like, or put them onto USB drives and boot your PC with them to test them out. Avoid Mint at all costs however, you don't want to get involved with that trash. Debian, Fedora OpenSUSE are good places to start. I'd personally avoid using a distro based on another distro, it tends to cause problems, in my experience anyway
>>
>>56410866
see https://distrowatch.com/ for a list of popular distros too

Why exactly do you want Arch for shit you could do with any distro?
>>
>>56410872
o ok. well if you have no ethernet cable to install, then use the nonfree iso like the other anon suggested and linked. it contains the stuff you need for your wireless to work during the installation. did you try this?
>>
>>56410866
Literally just follow the installation guide.
>>
>>56410904
Depends on why you say that.
>>
>>56410872
Trying out? TRYING OUT? DO or DO NOT!
But really you forgot to close your bracket.
I propose using the non free netinst iso, should be the least work, but can leave some unwanted packages installed.
>>
>>56410953
I hate the fucking toolbar and all that environment shit.
I hate it on windows so I just kill it from task manager and run everything trough there.
I want the same effect from a Linux except just being able to run programs from the terminal without it being overly complicated.

Doesn't work, pretty sure I don't have the Broadcom drivers that are needed. Isn't it easier to just use Android USB tethering and fix the wireless after the installation?
>>
>>56411115
I guess so, give it a shot and see. look up how you'd install the firmware first however so you know if it'll work

Arch isn't lightweight. If you want something lightweight get a Debian netinstall.

Hey guys. I',m going to dual boot between Linux and Windows for some software. But i plan to run windows without an antivirus and just run Malwarebites every now and then and Common Cense 2017.

My question is: can a Windows virus fuck my Linux partition even if it's installed under a different filesystem?. By "fuck" i mean having a virus that unmounts or deletes my Linux partition.

Used Mint for the past year and want something that'll allow me to learn more about Linux.

What should I go for?

On a scale of 1 to 10 how big a pain in the dick is it to use Gentoo as your main OS? (Mint being about a 2)
>>
>>56411475
Apparently Mint lets you access the internet just fine, there's all you need to learn more about Linux.

>>56411385
They can. Once a virus gets into your system, it can infect everything.
>>
>>56411385
It can but probably won't. I've never heard of this happening. You also need special software to access filesystems such as ext4 from Windows, so just encrypt the partition and hope you don't get malware specifically designed to delete partitions it can't access.
