I want good running headphones, but earbuds are current trend and that's all you can find in a store nowadays. I fucking hate earbuds. They make my ears hurt, and sound varies with each movement you make.
Anyone uses something similar to the right picture? I had 2 pairs of those, served me for 12 years, finally died. No wonder they discontinued those, because they are too durable. Fucking sony.

TLDR: i need good running headphones, that's not an earbuds.

Which ones /hpg/ ?
Sennheiser CX 300 II or
Betron YSM1000
I am a bit concerned that both are marketed as having 'deep bass'. Does this mean nigger bass?
Both as on sale $30-35.
Any other brands to look for?

Hello /g/uys,
I currently own a pair of DT770's for my daily music use, using mainly my phone.
Should i sell them, and get me a pair of AKG's K7xx from Massdrop?
I think the DT's lacks deeper and bassier lows.
Should i go for the other ones?
Was also thinking about getting the FiiO e11k.
>>
>>56353785
The K7XX has less bass than the DT770, it's only bassy by AKG standards.

Meelectronics m6 pro

I'm currently using the m6 pros for my general audio and I really like their audio signature. From the frequency response graphs they seem neutral with slight bass and I love their sound. I am crossed between the hd598 and the dt990 pro. The lack of bass on the 598 trouble me but I don't really have a reference for neutral sound so idk if the bass on them is enough. The hd598 go for 150 and so do the dt990.
>>
>>56354117
The DT990 will require an amplifier, the HD598 do not. Something to consider if your budget really is firm.

DT990 do not necessarily require an amp, but its recommended. My chinkpad has no problems with the 990, could be a little loude sometimes, but in general its ok. If you want HD598, have you considered the HD558 instead?

What are some good IEMs for musicians, specifically drumming and backing vocals?

I've heard I should be looking for ones with a flat frequency sound dampening instead of just muting highs from say, cymbals.

I don't want the sound dampening to be too insane because you can't sing in tune when you can't hear yourself. Helps me with feel in playing too

>>56355031
Damping, not dampening. Damping refers to reducing sound and vibration. You want a general broadband reduction of level, it seems. A little hard to do, it's difficult not to reduce high frequencies disproportionately to the bass.
I remember seeing some active IEMs with microphones built in to improve intelligibility. Not sure the sound quality holds up.
>you can't sing in tune
Kinda hard to do, the occlusion effect makes a mess of vocals and speaking. Start talking with your fingers in your ears to demonstrate.
Deep fit (pushing in until touching bone) can help reduce that, these tend to have more sound damping though.
>>
>get a real pair of headphones they said

Ugh, they hurt my ears from pressing against them, I can't turn anything up without THA BASS (and they're not stupid bass-oriented headphones either) destroying my ears, and they keep picking up interference that makes an annoying low buzz when nothing is playing through them. Just got my Lyr 2 last night, been enjoying it thoroughly since. Really opens up the 702's in a way that just wasn't happening with on-board sound card. The bass is 100% better now.

Unfortunately, I definitely need a DAC. It also makes low quality source material really obvious. I can hear a ton of interference coming from the onboard output on my Y510P. I tested it with my roommates Modi and it not only eliminated the interference noise but also improved sound quality (when fed good quality .flac files).

The 702's are pretty good, but definitely not my endgame. I'll listen to these for 6-months or a year then decide if I want to get into Grado, Sennheiser, or Audez'e higher end phones. I think the LCD-2/3's are supposed to pair great with this amp.

Nothing at all wrong with using EQ to shape the sound to your liking a little.

I did seriously consider just getting an O2+ODAC. The only thing that stopped me was the O2 isn't quite up to the task of driving some of the more power hungry orthos on the market and I wanted versatility. I may still go ODAC for my DAC.

>>56355939

Discontinued for long enough that the successor 2170 is discontinued. If you know one Lambda, you won't be too far off in guessing the other sound signatures.
A little tricky to fit like most Lambdas, DC powered amplifier can be used portable if you purchase the correct battery and are that kind of crazy person.

I don't necessarily believe so, I don't know how well some of those active solutions bear out. Not really my interest as a consumer.
I've also heard about some of the Westone Ambient series or whatever. The tips they bundle don't help with the occlusion part, although a lot of brands use compatible eartips.

Unfortunately, that's all I got.

A used portable notebook, netbook or chromebook for college and a dekstop PC for gaming, you can build good 800$ PCs. Can you link your laptop, just for comparison?
If you are on a really tight budget, consider cheaper options than DT990 oder HD598. What about the HyperX Cloud? You should be able to get it for 40-50 bucks, it has a detachable mic and is solid for music and gaming, it's basically a Pro80 with a mic attached.

X2 is bassy but it has weak treble. For your taste I'd recommend a Beyerdynamic DT880. Pick the cheapest model, it's always fine.

>>56353785
DT770 and K7XX are completely different headphones: DT770 is closed and V-shaped, K7XX is open and somehow neutral. If you want to taste an open AKG, I would recommend either a Q701 or a K702 (if you're european). They're both cheaper and better than K7XX. However the DT770 will have surely more powerful bass than any AKG open model. Are you sure of what kind of sound signature you're looking for?

>>56354117
DT990 is everything but neutral. HD598 is neutral but it has a warm sound. HD558 is cheaper and can be easily modded into a HD598, then I would go for that. If you want a different recomendation, I recommend a K702: https://www.amazon.it/gp/aw/d/B001RCD2DW/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?__mk_it_IT=%C3%85M%C3%85Z%C3%95%C3%91&qid=1472659838&sr=8-1&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=akg+k702&dpPl=1&dpID=51suSStG05L&ref=plSrch

>>56354771
German quality

>>56355898
Old onboard audio cards had interference/background noise issues which could actually make headphones sound like hell (especially if the headphones were connected to the front port of the case). Amp only increases volume, you don't need a tube amp to have good bass on the K702, something simple like the E10K already does it.

>>56356375
No, you did well for that price. M40X are still far from good closed headphones though.
>>
>>56356536

The 702's aren't spectacular by any means, and I didn't even try to imply they were. I just said they performed better out of the amp than they did out of my laptops output jack. Are you specifically implying all Schiit gear sounds awful?

And of course "100%" better is hyperbole you pedantic shit, the intended message being that the extra power helps with bass "punch and definition" I suppose you might say. The AKG's felt extremely bass light out of the laptop jack. They're still not bass heavy headphones, but they sound better rounded.

I only stated fed with flac to differentiate that I wasn't listening to 128kbps .mp3s and saying "oh wow it's so much better". Shitty quality compression and shitty mastering are both apparent enough when you hear them.

In regard to what I said about pairing well, contextually I failed to imply I was primarily considering power outputs. Most of the nicer orthos on the market are not terribly efficient and benefit from an amp that can deliver at decent amount of power into the right ohm loads. Almost no heaphones need the power the Lyr has to offer, hell you can run LCD-2's off a Magni just fine. HE-6 or HE-4 though as you mentioned like lots of power. Now having enough amp will never be a consideration for me in buying headphones.

I wasn't "listing random brands" either. I just didn't mention specific models. I'm considering HD 800 / S, LCD-2/3, and GS1000e but those are all options for well down the road.

Take your salt elsewhere.
>>
>>56356666
Not salty in the slightest.

>Are you specifically implying all Schiit gear sounds awful?
No, joking about the Asgard voltage spike before they added a muting relay. Most Schiit gear is pretty neat and performs admirably.

>extra power helps with bass "punch and definition"
It helps with output level, volume. Punch and definition are complete fluff terms and mean nothing. Your amplifier doesn't do anything specific to bass frequencies than it doesn't do to the rest of the spectrum. Maybe the output from your laptop was capacitor coupled or some shit if you truly hear more bass coming out from the K702 now.

LCD2 is easier to drive than your K702, especially since the "fazor" magnet structure Audeze introduced.

The only thing those headphones you now listed have in common is high price and none of them are outright better or worse than what you have now. Preference to sound signature is somewhat subjective. Find out what you want and choose then. I couldn't recommend a Grado to anyone but hey, try it out if you like that kind of sound.
>>
>>56356593

Yeah, I know that the amp only increases volume. That's why I know I need a DAC of some variety. The interference noise that I get out of onboard card is just as bad as it was without the amp, but even more noticeable during quiet breaks between tracks and such at the higher volumes I can reach now. I can literally hear interference any time I move my mouse / scrollwheel. I also hear drive activity through the headphone out. I'm guessing that's internal interference on the computer because I can't imagine what else it would be. Even with output pegged on the onboard card I could only just get the AKG's to a decent volume.

And I didn't really buy the Lyr 2 for the AKG's specifically. They're starter headphones and doing well for exactly that. I certainly know I didn't need a tube amp, any decent solid state amp out there would have done the same job just fine, but I did WANT a tube amp. So I bought one. Well, a hybrid tube amp.

Same reason I have a mechanical keyboard when rubber domes literally work just as well. Same reason anyone buys anything besides the most basic available that would have performed the same function.

>>56356860

>"The only thing those headphones you now listed have in common is high price and none of them are outright better or worse than what you have now. Preference to sound signature is somewhat subjective. Find out what you want and choose then."

Exactly correct, and that's what I'm doing. I haven't listened enough to these or any other headphones to know what's ideal. I bought these because they are supposed to be pretty neutral and figured it would be a great place to start to get an idea of the sound signature I might want. I'll demo as many as I can and eventually figure out what my preference is then buy something. Headphone meets happen every so often in my city.

Lambdas have had a very consistent FR for 35 years. Performance on 202/207 is as good as the top lambda models, and still outperform top dynamics in terms of distortion. Fit problems are greatly overstated and are likely associated with narrow heads.

https://rinchoi.blogspot.com.au/2013/06/stax-sr-lambda-professional-history.html

The 252 series amplifier is reportedly very good but it won't remain linear at high loudness. IOW it is a superior product for the price.

Well, those requirements are pretty broad man. There are a dozen solid options out there for you.

AKG K240's, Audio Technica ATH-M50's, Fostex T50RPs, Grado SR80s, there are a couple Sennheiser options in that range.

I think you should narrow down your requirements a little.

>Same reason I have a mechanical keyboard when rubber domes literally work just as well.
It's not a fair equation imo. Mech keyboards may grant multiple advantages compared to rubber dome keyboards, whereas pricy amps usually don't perform better than simple/cheap amps.

Thanks for the list
>>
>>56357321
In order to narrow things down, when and how are you going to use your headphones? Are you going to use them in public places or at home? Do yoy want isolation?
>>
>>56357654
Only planning on using them at home. I'd prefer isolation as long as the price doesn't go up a ton
>>
>>56357568

What advantages, specifically? I've had a Logitech wireless keyboard with domes for like four years now and I've never had any issues with it whatsoever. Not that I don't want a good mechanical or anything, but that's just a look / feel / want thing. I have an 80% with Matias switches and Dolch keycaps on backorder.

That said, you're right about really pricey amps not performing any better than less expensive options. A lot of times you're paying for unnecessary "features" like chassis build quality, tubes, interesting topologies, etc. Whether or not those things have any value to you whatsoever is entirely personal and subjective. I like the aesthetics, construction, and design of my amplifier over something like a FiiO or O2, and I'm willing to spend a little extra money for those things.

Some people want LED backlighting on their keyboard. Some people want RGB LED's. Some people prefer Gateron or Cherry or Matias switches. Some want aluminum cases or any other number of things that aren't functionally important in any way, but they'll pay more for those features.

http://www.head-fi.org/a/headphone-buying-guide

Read over the basic definition of headphone types in this thread, it should help. If you're using them at home, how noisy is your home usually? Do you have loud room mates or a lot of ambient noise? Will it be a problem if sound leaks out (will your roomie be pissed when he can hear your k-pop coming through the back side of your headphones)?

If sound leakage isn't a problem and your listening environment is pretty quiet, you're in good shape for an open headphone, but if you prefer isolation you're better off with something closed.

What kind of music do you mostly listen to / what else will you be using them for? Different types of music can be better suited to different sound profiles that various headphones will offer.
>>
>>56357722
Ok then you're more oriented towards closed-back headphones. For your budget either Sony MDR 7506 or ATH M40X or AKG K271/272HD are good.
>>
I think I finally equalized these "professional" Sonys. Now how do I scrobble this?
>>
>>56357786
Alright thanks. I'll read through it.
I live in a pretty quiet town where the only outdoor noise I hear is wind blowing and birds. As of now I live alone so leakage is no problem.
I mostly listen to metal and classical.
Thanks man
>>
>>56357786
>What advantages, specifically?
It depends on the switches, but generally mech keyboards grant better accuracy, tactile feedback and lower latency.

>>56359191

If you're looking for good bass in a can without amplification, I would think you'll want to lean toward closed at that price point as well.

>>56359477

Sounds like an open headphone would work well for you, though. At that price point, if you're looking for a very neutral headphone I would look into the options mentioned here.

>>56358118

For a little more, you can get a pair of AKG K7XX from Massdrop which fit your requirements perfectly. Very neutral, good build quality and serviceability, extremely comfortable, and you'll be able to drive them ok out of your laptop (though if you're finding you can't get the volumes you want, you'll need an amp).

Though, you're just starting to get to the point that amplification might help get the most out of any pair. Not that you need it right away, but consider it as a future upgrade to any pair you buy. Something like an O2 or Schiit Magni 2 would be perfect.

Mine is old as shit, too. Got a ASUS P7P55D-E Pro (i believe) mainboard and the onboard soundcard has absolutely no problem with my DT990 250 Ohm.
I recommend you get headphones first, try them and then decide whether you need a soundcard or not.
For headphones, get the DT770, they are full-size, closed, extremely comfortable and have imho the best bass with very good low end in class.
The 250 Ohm version is, of course, better, but the 80 Ohm is good, too and easier to drive.
If you still want or need an internal sound card, get a cheap Creative Sound Blaster or ASUS Xonar, but i honestly doubt you'll need one.

Depends on just how portable you really need them to be.

The AKG K240's are $60-70 USD here in the US so should fit your budget. Not quite as open as the 702 but still allow quite a bit of sound through.

I think the Grado SR80 are also fairly open and within your budget, and they would be more compact and portable, but I don't have any personal experience with them.

15 Minutes with $55,000 – The Sennheiser Orpheus
Like I mentioned earlier, the show was all held in the basement of the Park Plaza hotel. The only exceptions were for the really high end stuff that you need an appointment for. I made mine several weeks ago to see what the Orpheus is all about.
Even climbing the stairs to reach the second level just for the Orpheus felt like there was a message behind it. You had your time and you supposedly ascended to higher plane of existence where it was quiet and there was a waiting room. I made small talk with the Sennheiser employees before walking into the room to claim my 15 minute slot. Luckily, Tidal was set up so I could search for anything I wanted to hear. I saw that the last person had listened to the Jurassic Park soundtrack and the recent searches were mostly for classical music. No way Jose’, I thought, if I’m only getting 15 minutes then I’m listening to something I know inside and out. I want to hear the difference.
And I did. There’s a term called air around the instruments, something high end DACs and headphones strive to achieve. The HD800 is particularly good in this regard, but quite bright for the effort. The Orpheus was not bright at all. It reminded me of the warmth of the HD600 but with far, far more detail. It was an extremely analytical sound smashed with a degree of warmth and musicality that I did not know was possible to achieve before. The soundstage was narrower than the HD800 however.
The first song I chose was When Doves Cry by Prince. I knew that I wasn’t going to be able to lean back and listen to entire songs in these 15 minutes so I had to skip to the parts that I predicted might sound interesting. Indeed, I heard the slight breaths Prince took in the recording studio before singing each line and I heard how his vocals were stacked on top of one another so effortlessly. The warmth made it so it sounded like he was in the room with me, which would have been cool but sadly not possible anymore
>>
>>56363421
I switched to Closer by Nine Inch Nails, an aggressive song that gets very harsh on analytical headphones and needs to be dulled a bit to sound fun. The Orpheus did away with such notions of trade-offs and presented the whole package to me in a manner where it was almost unsettling. There are certain synth lines that get buried under layers of other, more distorted synth lines and guitars in that song that were brought out and made to ring clearly. I ended my listen with some Pink Floyd songs and was, once again, taken aback by just how effortless and natural the sound was.
As I walked back down the stairs to the rest of the attendees and booths, it dawned on me what the Orpheus really stood for and why it made its appearances at shows. Somewhere down the line, in 1991 apparently, Sennheiser ran really far ahead of everyone else and took a look back and thought that they could release it as a statement, an achievement showing what was possible. I don’t think that they thought they would sell very many, but it’s a genius marketing tactic to have limited 15-minute slots for enthusiasts to sit in waiting rooms for a chance to experience the pinnacle of your engineering. It sends a message.
I found myself wishing I could have tried the Focal Utopia in a similar, extremely quiet setting with comfortable leather chairs and dim mood-lighting – with Tidal instead of their limited song choices at the booth. It does not matter which I like more, both are unattainable for my budget – but I honestly feel that the gap Sennheiser had in 1991 is lessening each year even with the recent update to the Orpheus. Time will tell what happens next, but I did feel that the Utopia deserved a quiet listening environment to shows its true strengths.
>>
tl;dr: Incredibly impressive experience that showed its technical superiority over the rest of the market, but left me wanting a similarly quiet listening environment with another flagship model at Can Jam.
Edit: Damn, thanks for the gold whoever you are and, if you enjoyed this, I'd welcome you to check out my other stuff. I don't have any recent write-ups after Can Jam because I've been writing my dissertation, but I'll catch up later.
Edit 2: Some people seem to think I'm shilling for Tidal, a service I have only ever used for the two days I was at Can Jam because that is what most booths had set up. To an old-fashioned FLAC collector like me, one who shuns streaming websites, the only way I would advertise for Tidal is if Kanye West gave me a production credit (and royalties for no reason) on his next album. Look for my name whenever it drops and you'll have your answer.

AKG K701 / K702 / Q701 / K7XX / K702 Anniversary.

Great detail, very neutral, good soundstage. Very comfortable, open backed, responds very well to amplification (your E10K will do the job just fine).

These are all the same headphone with only a few minor differences. One is color scheme, they all come in different colors. Two is detachable vs. non-detachable cable. Three is pad type.

Three, they have very, very slightly different driver properties.

Any of them will work just as well as they others so don't get hung up on the minor differences. Your best bet, if you can get them, is the K7XX. They are generally considered the most well rounded of the set. I have the K702s personally.

If you're really just looking for a microphone / headset for skype use and you're not terrible concerned with audio quality just use your PC speakers and a desk mic.

Or you can buy a pair of headphones and add a mic.

Or you can buy a cheap headset from Target.

It's hard to give you suggestions if you don't even really know what you're looking for. Personally, I would suggest buying an AntLion Modmic and the best pair of headphones you can afford.

I think you can get a pair of AKG240 for like $60. Toss in a $40-50 modmic and you're right at your budget with a fairly nifty little headset.

After getting a good headphone setup, I have to ask (and don't take this in some kind of elitist pseud way):

why do they bother putting half the details they do into music? most people will literally never hear a good 1/3 of the stuff in a given song

think about the places where people listen to music: loud clubs, moving cars, sports stadiums, as background noise at parties, through the $10 earbuds that come with cellphones, etc. the very laws of physics make the little details bounce off into the ether to join the white noise

music producers go through so much effort when they could leave most of it out and people would never know the difference

It's worth of note though that, like you said, a lot of this work is lost to the public, they still have to sell tons of shit and it also shows in a lot of recent productions, the loudness war ruining any and all dynamic and lots of otherwise good albums is a pretty obvious example.

so, it's looking like the new iphone will not have a headphone jack, and the moto z already doesnt.

what does this mean for headphones, /hpg/?

if i plug my headphones into a lighting/micro usb adapter, does that affect sound quality? will there be a need for specific adapters which can transmit the signal better than others? i have no idea what any of this means for muh phone listening, and as you can tell by my post i am obviously technically retarded.

any info is much appreciated!

MDR 7506, no detachable cable, but built like a tank, you'd have to be very careless to break it.

>>
>>56365987
You always set everything to 100% volume and then adjust the volume with the physical knob. If it's too quiet on low gain then you simply put it on high gain and adjust it from there. The e10k isn't overly powerful, but it's good enough for most things, one of which should be the 600's.

I'd like to use these with V-Moda's boompro, so my greatest stipulation is that the unit be compatible. It's my understanding that anything with a detachable cable is fair game, so unless I'm corrected I'm going to assume it's the case. The above with a detachable cable.
>>
>>56368515
SHP9500 but they're open and don't have much bass. The BoomPro is limiting you because not a lot of headphones have a detachable cable that would work with it.
>>
>>56368538
I know, but I'd like to just make my own headset without gluing an overpriced modmic to the side. A head-mounted microphone with a physical mute button is all I'm looking for, but there's not a lot of great options on that front.
>>
>>56368538
If I may ask, what's your opinion on the ATH-M50x? That model does have a removable cable, but that's about the only thing I know about it.
>>
>>56368633
They're ok but not very engaging to listen to IMO. I think the M40X is better if you want something "neutral" that still sounds good.
>>
>>56368705
I've just read that the connector is proprietary and so it wouldn't work with the boompro anyway. Slam dunking that one into the trash.

By no means am I an audiophile. I just don't want to have to juggle between every day listening headphones and a dedicated pair every time I need a headset, you know?
>>
>>56368721

>>
>>56368776

Looks like there is an adapter you can use to make some AKG headphones work with the BoomPro: https://www.mimic-cables.com/products/akg-3pin-mini-xlr-to-stereo-3-5mm-adapter

So if you get that then you can also consider most AKG sets
>>
>>56368867
>>56368885
I may be going about this the wrong way and maybe I should just cough up 50 bucks for the modmic. I dunno. What's your take?
>>
>>56368907
I'd say try the SHP9500 or the HD598 (though you'll need a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter like this: https://www.amazon.com/Nokia-Audio-Adapter-Cable-Stick/dp/B007R58NPK)

I'm assuming you already have the BoomPro so just try that out and if you don't like that headphone just return it.
>>
>>56368940
Oh, I totally don't. I'm groping around in the dark. I fell for the wireless meme a year or so ago. The quality is crap and the microphone picks up everything under the sun.

All I'd like is either a good headphone and head-mounted microphone combo or a headset I wouldn't be ashamed to wear outside of the house.
>>
>>56368968
Hm, well you could also look at the HyperX Cloud as an alternative for a headset. But I would still go with the HD598 + adapter + BoomPro... that would probably maximize audio quality all around for your budget.

HD600 has weaker sub-bass, stronger mid-bass, worse mids, worse instruments' separation. If your K702 sounds bad, either you're not driving it properly or your tracks are just poorly mastered. Try to move the K702 forward on the pinna, so that the rear part of the velvet pads tpuch your earlobes.

> Are the K702s really better than the HD600?
They're both very good headphones. As it often happens for audio stuff, there's not really anything clearly better than everything else, it's mostly a matter of personal taste. Lots of people love the HD600 because it's tuned to make everything sound pleasing, whereas K702 is tuned to make everyone here what's inside the music. Back when K702 was much more expensive, it used to be compared to the HD650, which is somehow arguably more balanced than the HD600. Now that the K702 is so cheap, it should be the priority for anyone wanting to take a neutral sound into consideration.
Read the reviews of Rin Choi and Ken Rockwell for more informations on the K702.

Budget - 50€ or less. If possible closer to 30€.

Source - iPhone 5S and my shitty laptop, mainly spotify and youtube.

Requirements for Isolation - Should have good isolation, will be used in the library and I'd hate if I'd have to crank up the volume because I can clearly hear the bus announcer's voice over the music

Will you be using these headphones in public? - Yes

Preferred Type of Headphone - IEMs or "normal" earphones

Preferred tonal balance - As neutral as possible, would also be okay with a slight bass focus

Past headphones - Using the NVX XPT100 at home. Recently lost my stock apple earbuds which is the reason I'm here haha

Preferred Music - Lots of different genres, from Swans (post-rock) over Kanye (Hip-Hop) to stuff like Death Grips, electronic music and even just regular pop.

I've mainly been looking at the Sony MDRXB50AP, Zero Audio Carbo Tenore, and Vsonic GR 02 BE so far.

I've got the K702s.

They are very neutral. Very detailed. Very clean sounding.

So, they work amazingly well with vocals, brass, stringed instruments, etc.

If you like a lot of "deep" or "dark" music like trip hop etc, they might not be perfect for you.

I'm enjoying mine, but it's not giving me quite the sound signature I want when listening to say, Massive Attack or even stoner / doom like Sleep.

Saxophone? Great. Cello? Great.

I'm considering returning them and trying something else, but they also sound so good with acoustic music that I'm not sure.

That, and I'm not really sure what else to try in the same price range anyway.

Koss Sporta Pro may be an option for you. It's the exact same as the Porta Pro but cheaper and different styling. There is no reason to buy the Porta Pro since the Sporta Pro exists.

>>56353528
AKG K240 if you're willing to sacrifice sound and styling for comfort. Super lightweight, they hardly weigh anything. Headband system is amazing, it conforms to your head perfectly without being smothering. Clamp is very light and non-intrusive. They're good for four hours out of the box, no problem, but if you throw some velour Beyerdynamic DT770 (regular foam) or DT990 (memory foam) pads on there, they'll be comfortable all day long.

>>56353741
Look into the Takstar Pro80, Audio Technica ATH-M40X, or Beyerdynamic DT770. The DT770 especially has emphasized bass, which may be what you want.

>>56353785
Your upgrade path is probably going to involve planars.

>>56354117
Consider one of the AGK "reference" headphones. I own the K612. It's super neutral, and with really impressive soundstage. Out of the box, the K612's headband is far too stiff, you need a knit sleeve for it. Stock ear pads are good though. However, it does require amplification, your laptop may not be able to drive it directly.

>>56355180
Not going to give you advice on a headphone, but I always tell people to get an external USB DAC and an external amplifier. There's no technical reason why this *has* to be true, but for whatever reason (maybe because they're marketed to gamers,) PCI(E) soundcards are always really badly engineered. In theory it should be possible to build a good soundcard but no one actually does.
>>
>>56355614
If you have "no preference" then you probably don't want 100% neutral. Get something with slightly recessed mids to reduce fatigue from long listening. (Luckily, almost all headphones are like this so you can basically ignore this paragraph.)

Your options for the best possible isolation are:
1. Something like the NVX XPT100 or Takstar Pro80, with decent natural isolation. It won't be nearly as strong as noise canceling but it could easily be enough. Personally I take my Pro80s on air flights and it's OK, if I was flying all the time it wouldn't be good enough though.
2. Noise cancelling. I hate to recommend Bose because their sound quality isn't great, but that's really the best brand for noise canceling.
3. Custom IEMs (CIEMs) based on molded ear impressions

>>56357321
See the section about the K240: >>56375963

>>56358733
Look at the Takstar Pro80, Audio Technica ATH-M40X, or Audio Technica MSR7 for some decent portable full-sized closed headphones. M30X is a contender too but the cable is super long, for portable use you'd have to coil it up or mod it. And welcome to the hobby!

>>56358955
If you already own a pair of M50s, you can try buying an extra layer of treble-killing foam on ebay and inserting it behind the pads. If you don't find the stock pads comfortable, I believe the Brainwavs HM5/NVX XPT100 pads will fit it, and those pads are available in lots of materials and shapes. Probably cheaper than buying a new pair of headphones.

>>56359041
Parametric EQ may or may not be audibly transparent, depending on the filters you use it can create time-domain distortion.

This is called an "open" headphone. Open headphones don't provide noise isolation, but it's generally agreed that a lot of the best headphones are open because you don't have sealed air pressure interfering with the driver.

Do IEMs get much better the more you spend? I usually listen with akg k271 but bought a pair of chinkshit kz ates IEMs for something small when on the go, and I found these to be much better than other IEMs I've used in the past, how would these compare to some very expensive IEMs?
>>
Are the Fostex T50RP's really worth it?

They're about $90-100 and the consensus is they're underwhelming stock, but can be really phenomenal with modding. I have never listened to a pair, but I was thinking they would be a good way to learn about headphones and tweak them to my sound preference a bit.

I've got the K702's right now, but starting to want to experience a little variety so I can eventually choose a flagship of some kind.
>>
>>56376343
If you're into modding then yes they're worth it
>>
>>56360452
Sporta Pros are basically a cheaper version of the Porta Pros with different styling but the same sound. Still more than $9 though.

In that price range, you may be able to get a used M20X or M30X, which would also be an upgrade from the Koss. The M30X cable is kind of long for portable use though.

In general, second-hand is a great way to get headphones if you're on a budget.

>>56362971
DT770 is a very bassy closed headphone. Since you have a good source, you should get the 250 ohm model at least.

>>56363293
You could also look into padmodding. Brainwavs HM5/NVX XPT100 pads are available in lots of materials and shapes. If you want to go even crazier, there's a company called Mr. Speakers that sells lambskin leather pads in a couple of different shapes. Do your research though, make sure they fit whatever headphones you're buying.

>>56363650
You should consider some of the AKGs. See the section on the K612: >>56375963

>>56364251
AKG K240 for absolute maximum comfort. See: >>56375963 however, it doesn't have super deep bass, which you might want for EDM. Honestly, if you want deep bass, you either need to go closed, or you need to spend a lot of money. So consider the Audio Technica M30X, it's got good bass and decent enough comfort.

The noise leak isn't really that bad from open headphones. Someone right next to you will hear it. If the room is quiet, then maybe someone in the same room. But it's not going to keep your roommates up at night or anything like that.

>>56365783
Do a detachable cable mod on your HSR-1000. That's what I did. Instructions are very easy to find online. (The HSR-1000 is just a rebranded Takstar Pro80, so the same instructions apply.) Get your hands dirty and learn something! If you don't have your own soldering iron, find a hackerspace in your city or a friend who owns one.

>>56370035
Audio Technica MSR7 is an option.

How would I get replacements for these? I lost one of the medium ones so I'm using the big fat ones and it kinda sucks. Would prefer from the official sennheiser website or real official Amazon links becuase there's a lot of fakes.

If I buy a pair of Fostex to mod, should I be getting the T50RP or the T20RP? One is referred to as dampened semi open, the other as open, but I'm not seeing much comparison info out there on the two.

Not much, they're commonly used for monitoring audio so they don't allow much external noise. That said, they're not high isolation like other sets.
