Thinking of installing a GNU and Linux style OS to use as my main desktop with Windows as a host OS for video games.

Haven't used it in a long time, which is the current comfiest distribution for someone who:
>doesn't mind fixing little things and has the knowledge to read documentation and use Google if needed
>wants a wide selection of packages, most notably obscure ricer bullshit
>Generally has simple tools, not some huge ass suite of things like suse or redhat have

I don't like Debian for reasons I cannot really articulate. In the past, Arch fit all my needs really well but is there any new players I should be familar with?

void, its an independent distro (not forked.)

It uses runit instead of systemd and libressl instead of openssl. It is very comfy and has super simple, fast bootup process. It's package format is similar to PKGBUILDs and packages are really easy to make
>>
>>56344845
I'll look at it, but I pretty much want ready-to-use stuff. I don't have time in my life for making my own packages and stuff - and yes I realize what a security shithouse the AUR is but it's perfect for a user like me

I'm well aware of Debian but from my experience in using it I concluded that apt is god awful and much prefer dnf or pacman
>>
>>56347626
dnf interface is nice, maybe it's a bit easier to use than apt*, but I had no problems with apt whatsoever and I know that the fedora repos are scarce (there is rpm fusion, but that didn't add the packages I needed) and I also had problems installing xorg with dnf
you can have a good package manager, but who gives a fuck if the package management and the repos are shit
>>
>>56346257

Wallpaper, please?
>>
>>56347715
I agree with you that Fedora's packages are lacking when compared to Debian, my only gripe with apt is the dependency issues, which I haven't had with dnf/pacman. An example is trying to remove VLC from KDE/XFCE and apt wants to remove the whole DE yet with dnf/pacman it removes it with no troubles.

If you're using a custom desktop with openbox or something, you won't have those problems.
In fact, autoremoving is quite useful to get rid of bloat (unneeded dependencies).

1. Disable transparency.
2. Find a better wallpaper.
3. Find a better color scheme that matches that wallpaper.
4. Remove the bottom bar, it's fat and ugly and those icons are disgusting (if the functionality of the upper bar isn't enough for you, just use a different bar).

brace yourself this is gonna be long and hectic
it took me a long time to make it work and i still don't like it that much

First off: terminal.sexy
You need to find a good color scheme for your terminal (there are custom presets over at the bottom). Once you've decided on the colors, press to export them to Xresources but instead you're going to paste the text into your ~/.Xdefaults.

Next thing, I'm using urxvt. Install it and set it as your default terminal. Here's a pastebin of the settings. This goes into your ~/.Xdefaults. Remember to run "xrdb ~/.Xdefaults" to apply all changes.
http://pastebin.com/ujEAPdz4
If you want window transparency, comment out the background color option and put this line in. The number in the square brackets is the transparency value.
URxvt*background: [55]#10141b

Next thing, you're gonna want a compositioning manager. This is for window shadows and transparent terminals. I'm using compton but I don't recommend it because there is a lot of screen tearing and the window dragging is really garbage. I'm currently looking for alternatives. I can recommend "xcompmgr" as a start. It allows window transparency and window shadows and it requires basically no configuration.

For the window manager, I'm using openbox. All of the windows are undecorated. I pretty much have shown you everything I did for the terminal and the windows. I am using the arc-dark theme for openbox and there are no window borders. You pretty much have to configure this by yourself to make it look like how you want it to look.

Terminal programs:
Top left: screen - basically a program for the terminal that allows tabs (see the bottom of the top-left terminal, i have 2 zsh tab, one irc tab and a mutt tab)
Bottom left is ncmpcpp + mpd and bottom right is ranger (a file browser).

Now for the window organization. I'm using a program that's called wmctrl. Basically allows you to control each window seperately and set their exact positions. For my setup, I have a .sh script in my documents that runs every boot. It organizes the windows to their respective positions based on coordinates. I'm gonna give you a paste of it, but heres the thing: you should be customizing all of this by yourself. I'll also link you the article that I read to understand how I can get wmctrl to control windows. Basically, place the windows how you want them to be organized, run the wmctrl -lG command, get coordinates, modify them, etc and then put them into your OWN script.

wmctrl article: https://www.linuxjournal.com/magazine/hack-and-automate-your-desktop-wmctrl

Final words:
Every time I launch my computer, I always have to undecorate my windows so the top part of the window with the minimize and maximize is gone. This can be achieved by rightclicking on the bar or pressing Alt-Space on the currently-selected window.

I have icons and text disabled for openbox windows.

My color scheme is very light, heavily customized and I'm not going to spoonfeed it to you because, like I said, it should be something that you should be figuring out and seeing what you like. If you really want, just use an eyedropper tool for my colors.

I'm using KDE alongside openbox. My default font is Inconsolata and the terminal font is Terminus.

dotshare.it < USE IT. It is VERY HELPFUL. I got most of my configs from there and modified them as I went along. I found a nice ncmpcpp layout, the custom "screen" where you can see the name of the host and the time and a lot of other things.

Last thing: you better not give up as soon as you see this wall of text because you just took out time out of my day for me to write this

its gonna be tedious, but you can do it :)

if you have anymore questions, ask away!

Yeah I floated the windows because I wanted my sugoi wallpaper to show a little bit.

Awesome works plenty fine as a floating wm too, you just (usually) don't have titlebars to grab onto to move clients around but I think most of /g/ just alt + drags windows anyway

can i have window gaps?

is there a way to have a theme, such as KDE having breeze, so that all buttons dont look like I came from windows xp?

who is the best ravu raivu, desu?
>>
>>56349336
>can i have window gaps?
Not sure, I assume you can as the entire wm is scriptable with lua. I'd never use them so I never looked into it
>is there a way to have a theme
uh yeah lol, same way you would do it anywhere else. I use lxappearance to set themes, and you can use whatever qt has or even run kde's settings daemon and shit if you want

so far I don't like any of these anime girls but I'm only on episode 2

or just a wm with no bars or background and auto-run your terminal on startup
>>

you can make it so windows launch undecorated using the openbox config file

i have it so firefox launches fullscreen, undecorated

you can make urxvt windows always launch undecorated since you wont be opening terminals if you have a virtual desktop set up like this

but as far as i'm aware, you cant make windows undecorated through a terminal command, only through the openbox config when the window opens

heres what i used to do this to firefox, im assuming it'll work for terminals aswell
https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/107264/launch-iceweasel-firefox-window-undecorated

now that i think about it, im actually gonna do it for my terminals instead of having to manually undecorate them
>>

get a GTK+ theme you like. the default ones are fuck ugly. i prefer Blackbird or Greybird. you should be able to install them from your distro's repository. search for "gtk-theme"

get an Openbox theme you like, since it's the WM for lxde. usually get mine from deviant art. then edit your font/color settings through GUI and config files like any other DE/WM.

It was either that or renting and carrying a heavy hardcover textbook.

I had to download the book with the Kindle for Windows application on my Windows PC (I couldn't get the program to connect to the internet in Winetricks). Then I used calibre to strip the DRM and unpack the .azw4 into a .pdf. It was the single most Linux experience I ever had. Just hours of duckduckgo and learning all this crap just to get something so simple as an ebook to work. It's still better this way though after everything is set and done.
