IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Is £150 the standard price for X220?

Obviously I'm asking for the UK.
>>
I've been looking at buying a brand new X1 Carbon. It seems to have everything I want from a laptop for a price I'm willing to pay.

Is there something I'm missing? Is there a reason I shouldn't buy it? Are there obviously superior competitors?

I have no intention of getting one of the older thinkpads atm despite having a soft spot for them, sorry.

People just stick with what they know. Normies don't explore alternatives. Hell, people flip out when I show them a VM for testing shit that is an obvious virus that they thought was a safe file off the internet.

I have a buddy whose boyfriend won't let him run a VM for program development on his more powerful computer because he's afraid filling up the hard drive will hurt his computer
He bitched me out for installing a game onto the PS4 because he's afraid of filling hard drives.
Like seriously, hard drives are for storage. If you're not using them for storage you're using them wrong.

Anyone know why I can't seem to shrink a windows10 partition?
The fucker is stuck at 100gb in size and neither gparted or the windows disk manager can shrink the bitch.

My x230 only needs 60gb for the windows, the rest should rightfully belong to linux.

PS: can't really live without win10, it's for work.

>>
>>56334509
don't worry anon
>now my thinkpad doesn't read its nvidia graphics card's heat
this is because the graphics card is turned off, it's normal. try connecting an external monitor/dock or running a 3D app. you will be able to see temps.

> 20c to 90c and everything in between
somehow I doubt your CPU is getting to 20C. 90C is normal for max load on a T420.

if you really want to reapply thermal paste, use this guide
http://www.arcticsilver.com/intel_application_method.html#

make sure you select the correct CPU. method should be surface spread.

and use this guide to actually get into your thinkpad properly (i think a slight bend on the gpu mount helps with gpu temps)

I found a great deal on a T520 (FHD, 8GB RAM, SSD, near-new condition, near-new battery), but it comes with the i7 2620M CPU (not one of the quadcores, just a dualcore)

As far as I know, the i5 ones are generally better as they use less battery and get less hot, but despite less performance per watt, the i7 outperforms the i5 a bit in everything
This would be a second thinkpad, a work one, that would stay at home or in the office, and get very little use out and about as my commute is quite short.

I desperately need this bigger and higher res laptop for work, my X220 while being a nice IPS is too small and too low resolution for what I do now, it'd be my personal/fun/shitpostin/chinese cartoon machine instead.
Also the seller is so close that it could be delivered tomorrow, which would be a godsend.

So my question is, is the i7 2620M irredeemable? Or is it just fine?
>>
>>56336502
Oh and lastly I heard that some T60 gpus are ticking time bombs, and some T420 thinkpads with NVIDIA NVS 4200M had issues, which is the same GPU this T520 I'm looking at has

Is the gpu a problem? If it is, can't I just disable it in the BIOS, or maybe even remove it by opening the laptop up?
>>
>>56336502
>>56336520
Chill, never heard of problems with the NVS 4200M. There's an issue with the T61p with nvidia GPUs, but that's a well known issue with that particular model that is not even found easily.

Regarding the i7/i5 debacle, I can tell you this: I bought a T430 with a dual core i7 as well, and while everyone here said that it's "housefire tier", I didn't notice a damn thing. With normal usage it idles at ~50ºC (I didn't repaste it, and consider it's summertime now). Seems pretty good to me. Regarding the battery, can't comment on that, I haven't tested it propperly yet.

>>
So guys, the Retina Macbook Pro I bought in September 2012 has died completely. Logic board failure. I am extremely pissed, partially because Apple recognized this was a common problem and actually had a repair program in Canada that ran until February 27, but mostly because I spent $2,100 hard-earned summer job syrupbux on this thing and it's not even 4 years old. Even if I can get it repaired, I just want to sell it. I am done with Apple and their shit.

My roommate in university had a T500 which I always used to poke fun at, but now I'm thinking of embracing the Thinkpad way of life. Not particularly attached to the old keyboard style, so I was thinking of a xx30 series. What models would have at least a 1080p display? Are there any that offer an even higher resolution? I have been eyeing T530s but they all seem to be 1600x900, which to me seems a little low for a 15" screen.
>>
>>56336961
>I have been eyeing T530s but they all seem to be 1600x900, which to me seems a little low for a 15" screen.
It's fine. The 13" Mac only has 1280x800 equivalent workspace while the 15" Mac only had 1440x900 equivalent workspace.
I have a retina Macbook as well, but the difference isn't anything to write home about if you're not doing graphics work.

That's a fair comment I suppose, but won't a 1600x900 screen look kind of blurry on a 15" laptop, regardless of the equivalent workspace size?

Some time after getting the retina, I went back to my old 15" Powerbook G4 with the weird 1280x854 resolution, and shit looked blurry as fuck. I just don't want to get a 15" dankpad and then think "well fuck, this is what the world would look like if my eyes were -6.0"

Just get one with smallest amount of ram. Better yet, if you are really from poland, wybierz się na giełdę. Mnóstwo ludzi wystawiających sprzęt online wystawia się w niedzielę pod chmurką. Gołe thinkpady, z czwórką ramu i bylejakim dyskiem potrafią kosztować połowę tego co na alledrogo.

Hell no, those abominations are scary and here in polandland are actualky a common sight. Not to mention they just....fold when in accident. Still, for their price, they are vastly superior to, say, Tata's.

What would be a good SSD to put in there, can't I only put in a SATA II drive?

anything

everything is sata3 and it'll just throttle at sata2 speeds
>>
>>56346152
Check the thinkwiki for your devices specs, as for ssd most are hit and miss. I heard crucial is pretty decent.
>>
>>56346236
So a 2.5" SSD will fit? Thinkwiki only says 1.8'' SSDs
>>
>>56346279
2.5" should fit since the hard drives are 2.5", check some videos to be sure.

I'm looking for a laptop that'll be used exclusively for my homebrewing setup. Primarily, it'll be running Ubuntu and Beersmith (not a very resource demanding application), and maybe some office software. I was thinking a T410. Would that be sufficient for my purposes?

Im looking into netbooks for traveling. Can you guys suggest any of the smaller Thinkpads?
>>
>>56337150
Primarily because they're built really fucking sturdy compared to your standard, shitty Asus. Also, buy second hand, and you'll be able to get one for a really good price vs. the hardware.

So you'll want one, if you need something that lasts.

Is 1366x768 a good resolution for a laptop? On a 15.6 inch screen.

This is a T60. It's ten years old. Note that Speccy misreported a couple things here: there's only one monitor of course, and the GPU only has 64MB of VRAM, not 512.

This is that same T60 after modifications and the addition of a docking station. No other laptop can claim to be this modular. Every single component has been upgraded in some way. If that doesn't appeal to you, Thinkpads probably aren't for you.
>>
>>56347291
Do all thinkpad docks allow for external GPUs?
>>
>>56347368
Only the Advanced Dock, which only supports the T60/T61/T400. --10 to --30 generation can use Expresscard eGPUs, which require a bit more DIY work, but are much less restrictive. The Advanced Dock enclosure is very small and the slot can only provide up to 50W, while an Expresscard setup lets you use any GPU and PSU you want.
>>
>>56347368
Not all, however if you have a thinkpad with ExpressCard slot you can use an eGPU on a very "plug and play" setup.

Ok guys, please indulge me. I am looking to spend $300 or less on a quality refurbished laptop for college. I won't be using it for anything but word processing and maybe photoshop. I like thinkpads because of their no bullshit design but I haven't bought a computer since my eeePC in 2008 so I don't know where/ what to look for.
