How the fuck do I change the color of window backgrounds? Literally checked every editing app and googled it and nothing says how. besides of course installing someone elses theme.

Arch is only hard if you're dropped into it with no external resources. If you have a second screen on which to RTFM and follow along with guides on the net, and have some patience, you can manage.

That said, if you want a distro to ease you into Linux, Ubuntu's your waifu.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
>>
Pointless ramble. Booted up Windows for the first time in forever. Damn thing's stuttering all over the place. Can barely scroll smoothly in Firefox. Dolphin (the emulator) is somehow worse on Windows than on Linux with the FOSS drivers.

Yep. Never doing that again.
>>
>>56314576
>semi-transparent without downloading a theme
go to 'Window Manager Tweaks' from the settings menu. go to 'Compositor' and you can control all transparencies from there.
>>
>>56314598
FACT:
Richard Stallman only created a text editor and a couple other HIGH-LEVEL shit. He could not create a kernel or anything important.

It wasn't until 9 years later that linus came around and made a kernel for it that made it is today.

Richard Stallman does not deserve credit for anything and linux should not be prefaced by GNU.
>>
>>56314648
NEGATIVE. None of those effect backgrounds of windows, unless I have something else set that is preventing me from seeing the transparency.

I messed with everything in the compositor and the background never changes. only title bar and inactive windows etc.
>>
>>56314655
an operating system is not a kernel
>>
>>56314681
Excuse me, but what you're referring to as GNU Operating System is actually Text+Editor.

you need to patch gtk for rgba support, and then use a theme engine which supports it (such as murrine) then you just add the 2 hex digits for opacity to the end of the color.

I downloaded murrine, and murrine themes.

I selected a murrine theme, edit the gtk.
RGBA= TRUE in the gtk file.
when I edit the background like so

Nothing changes.

going to be installing my first linux distro (that I will actually be using)

Just pick a distro and rice it to how exactly how you want it.

Changing distros doesn't really make sense. Everything can be riced to your liking if you spend of enough time on it.
>>
>>56321448

>>
>>56321483
Well first you should get a theme manager.
Then pick a theme/icons from
"kde look .com" / "xfce look.com"

then install them (some managers let you drag and drop onto the manager)

Then you go slowly from there googling what you want to change, by editing the gtk file)
>>
>>56321548
Also composite editor.
Depending on the distro or whatever, you may even be able to download a theme editor or something easy to use.

Screen tearing is a driver thing, that'll be an Xorg option.
It'll vary depending on your hardware, for me with a Radeon 6400M the fix was to make a file in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ with contents:

Section "Device"
Identifier "gpu"
Driver "radeon"
Option "TearFree" "on"
EndSection

TearFree here is a driver option for the radeon driver. Apparently for Intel it's a little different:
Option "TearFree" "true"
But I haven't tried that, it's just secondhand information.

Should I reformat my external HDD in ext4?

I'm using Debian, and I had some errors with my external ntfs HDD (I was watching some anime that was on it while downloading more anime on it at the same time, causing some kind of filesystem corruption), so I had to go back to windows and use chkdsk to fix it.

Can someone explain briefly the advantage of the ext4 filesystem in comparison to the ntfs filesystem?

>>
>>56325516
I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as GNU/Linux is in fact GNU. Linux is not part of the operating system itself, but is the kernel that is not covered by the naming system of an operating system as defined by common sense.

Many users run operating systems such as Windows, OSX, and a variant of BSD yet do not use a cumbersome naming system that includes the kernel, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, GNU has been the exception to this for no reason and has just been called "Linux" for no good reason, and many others use the insane, cumbersome term "GNU/Linux", mostly because the GNU project doesn't want you to think that Linux is a part of GNU.

There really is a Linux, and it's not part of GNU, but it's a kernel, and no one really specifies using it. GNU is the OS; the actual base system you interact with, and is useful with any compatible kernel; it can function with many different kernels such as GNU Mach or even kFreeBSD, so the whole system should only specify the kernel when it matters, because all these kernels are really irrelevant regarding GNU.

>First of all, they don't issue any Security Advisories, so their users cannot - unlike users of most other mainstream distributions [1] - quickly lookup whether they are affected by a certain CVE.

>Secondly, they are mixing their own binary packages with binary packages from Debian and Ubuntu without rebuilding the latter. This creates something that we in Debian call a "FrankenDebian" which results in system updates becoming unpredictable [2]. With the result, that the Mint developers simply decided to blacklist certain packages from upgrades by default thus putting their users at risk because important security updates may not be installed.

>Thirdly, while they import packages from Ubuntu or Debian, they hi-jack package and binary names by re-using existing names. For example, they called their fork of gdm2 "mdm" which supposedly means "Mint Display Manager". However, the problem is that there already is a package "mdm" in Debian which are "Utilities for single-host parallel shell scripting". Thus, on Mint, the original "mdm" package cannot be installed.

>Another example of such a hi-jack are their new "X apps" which are supposed to deliver common apps for all desktops which are available on Linux Mint. Their first app of this collection is an editor which they forked off the Mate editor "pluma". And they called it "xedit", ignoring the fact that there already is an "xedit" making the old "xedit" unusable by hi-jacking its namespace.

>Add to that, that they do not care about copyright and license issues and just ship their ISOs with pre-installed Oracle Java and Adobe Flash packages and several multimedia codec packages which infringe patents and may therefore not be distributed freely at all in countries like the US.

>To conclude, I do not think that the Mint developers deliver professional work. Their distribution is more a crude hack of existing Debian-based distributions. They make fundamental mistakes and put their users at risk, both in the sense of data security as well as licensing issues.

>I would therefore highly discourage anyone using Linux Mint until Mint developers have changed their fundamental philosophy and resolved these issues.

Days wasted just switching between Xfce, MATE and Cinnamon for hours.

Not really a fan of Gnome or KDE.

Feel like Xfce is really solid, but also stagnating currently. Updates are rare and currently their objective seems to be to port the existing parts to GTK3, which pushes other improvements on its interface even further back.

MATE seems ok. Couldn't point anything out, that I particularly like or dislike about it so far.

Cinnamon looks nice, but I am wondering why literally no one seems to use it on here. A bit more restrictive with its integration to the Muffin WM also..

Linux nerds! How do I switch my Alt key for "Winshit" key? It's driving me nuts and I keep hitting it by a mistake. Everything would be fine if I could switch these things around.

Using Mint with Cinnamon.

Thanks!

If they are native, of course, but at least in the first month finding alternatives is important, if you start using wine all the time you might as well use windows.

Wine is fine, you must have made a mistake.

What is the problem exactly? Give me specifics not "lol it doesn't work"

I really just want league cuz I'm a faggot... I spent the last few months finding and testing Linux programs on Win10 and Android. It's really just LoL. And I'm just curious about Wine cuz I've read about it a lot.

>>56328097
I'm pretty sure it's because I need to make Wine for 32 bit architectures but I downloaded it for 64, then tried to change it to 32 after the fact.

But I think that's more minor. Right now I think I did a bad job uninstalling stuff and figuring out what is native and what I installed. So I get "broken" wine packages now i can't seem to get rid of.

This is why you don't embarrass yourself by spouting wrong information you saw on 4chan and passing it as a witty, informed remark.
His problem has nothing to do with the distribution, but with his GTK theme.
Kill yourself, idiot.

I want to try a Linux distribution that is installed in the RAM. I will use it for home use and programming.

Any recommendation?

On Debian Testing right now, just installed it and my audio is fucked. Can't hear anything, tried multiple fixes. I have Realtek audio. Help?

Start from the ground up. Start with a base debian system and go from there.
The packages "xinit" and "x11-xserver-utils" should get you started. RTFM xinit and learn how to use your .xinitrc.
I recommend don't start taking a distro apart because they make the whole thing more complicated than it needs to be. Start with the basics and do it nice and simple.

I have a Raspberry Pi running Arch without any GUI or WM installed, and I'd like to turn this into a media center of some sort. Right now it's connected to a large TV I'd like to use for the purpose.

My questions are:

>1) If I were to run the video on pi and stream audio to my desktop that's already plugged into a sound system, what's the tool I should look into for making the pi acting as an "audio server?"

>2) If I were to use the pi as a pure media fileserver and stream audio AND video to my desktop, what's the tool I should look into for achieving that goal?

>3) Somewhat unrelated, If I were to do any of the aforementioned streaming over WAN (say, away from home), which dynamic DNS service I should look into for locking my WAN address to a specific namespace?

after being a long time user of Ubuntu (I am not a poweruser) I tried openSUSE.

is there anyone here that use/used openSUSE before? how was it?

I had some problems to get the codecs working and GNOME3 fucking confuse me (installed LXDE in the end).

what are the advantages of openSUSE against Ubuntu?
