Welcome to /fgt/ - Friendly GNU Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU Thread. ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].

If you would like to try out GNU you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU.

Linux nerds! How do I switch my Alt key for "Winshit" key? It's driving me nuts and I keep hitting it by a mistake. Everything would be fine if I could switch these things around.

Using Mint with Cinnamon.

Thanks!

Sickening. So they're just bundling Wine and other software other people wrote and selling it? It's not even licensed under the GPL from what I've seen.

Just a warning, Mint is currently the worst distro around, consider switching to a better distro. You wount get security updates for the kernel and packages will break. It was also hacked in the past and backdoors were added into the isos.

I'm trying to do a fresh install of mint 18 on my laptop currently running mint 17 and a smaller partition with an old antergos.
Problem is it won't load the live version off the DVD. I burned the iso, change my boot options, get to the gnu grub, select the mint 18 cinnamon 64-bit option, and get a black screen. Compatibility mode does the same thing.

In a previous thread I asked about using apple's wired keyboard with Linux... >>56323312 and now I finally picked it up from a guy off Craigslist. Paid $35 for it brand new after bargaining with him.

I've been using mechanical switches all my life (never owned laptops so never encountered chicklet style) but I was never satisfied with them. I tried MS Designer bluetooth keyboard at the store but wasn't exactly happy with the keys (they are mushy and doesn't register keys well). MS Designer Bluetooth keyboard is also expensive but it does come with a mouse... which is great if you need one.

Anyway, after using this apple keyboard for an hour, these keyboards are the fucking GOAT! It takes so little force to press them yet the travel is near perfect. My fingertips don't hurt after typing for long anymore!

Linux modifications were easy too. I remapped media keys and assigned those 'show all windows' and 'show desktop' keys and now it's perfect. The keyboard also has two USB ports on the side and I plugged my wireless mouse dongle into one of them. My mouse also feels a bit snappier & doesn't disconnect since the dongle is so close to it.

Anyway, if you want a great keyboard, find a used one of these. Don't own any apple equipment but this keyboard is fucking great! Thanks /flt/!

Manjaro don't fix anything, nobody has any code ability there. If fact, they are completely incompetent and introduce problems which don;t exist upstream. They claim that they stabilize packages but if you find a bug they tell you to report it upstream. Upstream won't do anything because you're using manjaro. And that is to be generous to them, not mentioning the stupid shit they have done.
Their forums are like the blind leading the blind which is shitty because they promote the idea that your grandma can use manjaro but they offer no support for people who cannot research their own issues.

Computer has started to freeze randomly.
Didn't use to happen - Might coincide with a semi recent OS reinstall.
It's not a normal freeze either. If mpv is playing, audio continues as normal while picture remains still. I often still have a moveable mouse, but nothing reacts to it. You've installed (or updated) package(s) that requires a complete reboot of the system.
When any software is updated, this software must be restarted to use the new version. If a package is very close to the kernel (or if it's the kernel), there is no other way to reboot the whole machine.
Additionally to that, there is 6 new package updates available in the repositories.

Obviously, you can't reboot without losing your uptime.

Where do you get the idea that it is ok? Dependencies can be problematic is all cases. With non rolling the package manger usually wouldn't give you an update which is incompatible with the installed base, usually it is just security/minor updates, so usually point updates. Rolling means you could get an whole new major release version which could break backwards compatibility completely (not that unusual at all).
I'm curious though, why would you want to update a single package?

Better KDE for sure, but I don't think Debian has gone down all that much in the last year or two. They certainly handle things more beuracatically than other distros and that means group think and muddled work at times; however Suse and others fail at time as well.

We use OpenSUSE at work and I have CentOS on my home server and Gentoo on the desktop. No problems with any other distros I've tried lately, I just got used to my tools and keep them as is.

My biggest gripe with Debian and Fedora are Gnome being so antithetical to my workflow. I really prefer KDE if I'm going to get things done.

Hey guys, just curious:

I use GNOME on my desktop and i3 on my laptop. On my desktop, I currently have it setup to autologin to my session, so that the login and choose-DE/WM screen doesn't show up.

Question 1: How could I set up my config files so that by default, when nothing is done, it logs into GNOME, but when a modifier key or something is pressed or held during boot (which takes like 3 seconds since it's an SSD), it starts an i3 session instead?

Question 2: Say I'm already logged into GNOME in tty1. If I wanted to, could I start an i3 session in tty2? And if so, how?

I'm using Debian Testing, if that matters at all.

They will. Not that it matters, because your browsing experience will be horrible on both since you're browsing the same websites.

In practice there's not really such a thing as light web browsers, unless you wanna go full on terminal mode.

Just try Firefox and Chromium, see which is more responsive for you. And don't listen to that anon saying to try previous versions. That's shit advice, you always want the latest version of browsers with their security updates in order
>>
>>56338622
Well to be honest, I feel that is one of the shortcomings of manjaro, I've had similar weird problems like that in the past in multiple installs and gave up. The version 221 is systemd though so I'm not sure what might have happened. It would be better to find the root of the problem rather than just updating a few select packages, that can only be a temporary solution.

I don't really know. On Arch it's as simple as installing the deepin-gtk-theme and the wallpaper packages.
I'm guessing you can add a deepin ppa somewhere, and find the packages in the launchpad site.
It's not that different from the likes of Arc, so you might just want to prefer using that. This deepin theme is pretty glaringly white, a bit too much for the desktop but quite okay for the Thinkpad's TN panel.

It gets updated quite regularly, I'm assuming. Although DEs on Ubuntu only get updated per release, right? So then I suppose it doesn't really matter if the theme gets updated.

GTK is a finicky beast.

You can get the theme directly from upstream. You don't have to rely on packages for your distribution, but packages are neater.

>GTK is a finicky beast.
You just have to make sure your theme works with the GTK version you have (only affects GTK3). Theming should become more stable now and there won't be "breakages". The most popular themes keep up with GTK updates, so it should work across updates.

>On the subject of themes, any other recommendations?
I prefer grey themes, with not much contrast. I hate Arc for the too high contrast between certain elements (black right next to pure white).
The Zuki-themes are my favourite (I use a tweaked Zukitre theme). There's also Greybird (slowly being updated to work with GTK 3.20), Numix (not a fan of the red highlight color), Paper GTK theme (not keeping up with development, might work with the latest version).

I'd say the best one is a philosophical one. Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, is pretty shady. They advertise themselves as "Ubuntu" everywhere, not "Ubuntu Linux" or "Ubuntu GNU/Linux" or anything of the sort. They almost wish to separate themselves from the rest of the Linux world as the "human usable" linux, implying that everything else is not worth bothering with, or that it's harder. They also barely put manpower behind contributing in joint development projects, despite them being one of the distros that most take advantage of the work of others.

Basically: They wish to distance themselves from the community while simultaneously leeching off of people's work, almost don't contribute to upstream (specially proportionally to their userbase and workforce), and have been known to break user trust before (like with the old amazon unity debacle). Their bottom line is profit, which explains why it would make sense for them to partner with Microsoft. Their bottom line isn't the users or their freedom/privacy.

When an anonymous stranger on the internet tells you to and you're a naive, idiot, try-hard poser who doesn't know any better than to listen to him because he doesn't really plan or need to use a Linux distribution in the first place.

I'unno, it's not something that bothers me per se, it's just that I want to try other distros but I'm too dumb and lazy to learn how the different package managers work.

Ubuntu is debian for dumb niggers

Most package managers are very similar, you won't have to learn much besides somewhat different syntax.

Most distros have GUIs for their package managers if you prefer that.
Fedora by default uses the GNOME stuff all over, including the GNOME software tool or whatever it's called.
Manjaro developed its own interface to yaourt/pacman.

That way you can get up and running, explore the rest of the distribution and afterwards bother yourself with the dnf, pacman, what have you out there.

Antergos or Manjaro?

If you can't install arch, install something else entirely.

Antergos, ideally
>>
>>56339473
Antergos is basically just an installer, get Manjaro.

Friendly thread, Archbabbie.

What do you mean ideally?

Isn't that the point if I want to run Arch?

Manjaro keyring updates, if somehow out of synced, you gotta trouble shoot to update your system. Manjaro is a week behind

he's right though, nothing rude in his post either

to add to his post, if you lean towards something like Manjaro you might be better of with Ubuntu's network installer which is mostly the same as the regular one but could give you the option to apt install your own things after it's completed

It's not that. The exact same device and network gets 7MiB/s on Windows.
Different network managers didn't change anything.

I had a problem with slow wifi with a USB dongle a few years ago. As newer kernels were released it was finally fixed.

No shit, GNU/Linux does the exact same thing you pleb. Kernel updates would be considered "important." You must be trolling to be this stupid.
