Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Mind that it's the ole x200. Like, I know what I'm going for. It's gonna be a step down.

But, not that much of a step down because my current laptop is like, 5 years old, so, I won't notice too much.. r-right?
>>
What laptop should I get.
I need:
- 1080p screen
- 8GB RAM / Ability to upgrade to 8GB
- Decent enough CPU for node development and to not take 10 years to run webpack/gulp
>>
Is it a good idea to buy a used Thinkpad?
>>
>>56309642
The move from the 220 to the 230 was the keyboard change from the old style to the chiclet keys. I like the news keyboards but if you don't then get the 220. It'll be cheaper and the other specs are almost the same. They both have shitty screens though. There was no decent resolution available on either model, even the IPS tablet versions were still 1366x768
>>
>>56310524
Check out the W520

>>56310733
As long as you do your research, understand that you're getting a used computer which might require some service and upgrades, you should be fine. They were built very well up until recently. There's almost nothing of the old Thinkpad quality left in the newer Lenovo models
>>
>>56305184
What?
You know you have to select what card you want to use in the nvidia drivers right? Or if you are on linux run the program with either optirun or primusrun
>>
>>56305311

so x230 with no battery and a crack in the bottom cover for $60 bucks is a good deal right?
>>
>>56311622
That sounds like a great deal. If the crack is on the palm rest, you can swap that out for cheap, and the battery isn't that expensive either.
>>
>>56311683
>battery isn't that expensive either
>>
>>56311683
Yeah its on the palm rest and the bottom cover too it looks like but everything is supposed to work. Only a 60gb ssd. But that should be enough for Linux. I figure the cost of a battery plus palm rest and bottom cover is still a pretty good deal.
>>
>>56311694
nuhuh
>>
>>56311622
How does the new style keyboard compare to the old?
>>
What's the Thinkpad with the most functions?
>>
Whats with people saying thinkpad has locked bios problems? Is this true? Really want to get one.
>>
>>56311752
>original

Just a warning. Since the 30 series, laptops refuse to charge non original batteries.
>>
>>56311808
>he thinks it wasn't genuine

If only I still had the papers and boxing that came with it, the big poster-paper lenovo warning sheets would be good enough proof.
>>
>>56311831
Now find me a x230 original battery for cheap.
>>
>>56311851
Do what I did and sit on ebay for weeks until an OEM battery pops up for a decent price, that's how it works.

Also, most *real* x200/x201 batteries go for ~$80, more expensive than the averages I'm seeing on the x230 batteries.
>>
What's the most customizable thinkpad? I am looking for a thinkpad that is super cheap and i can change the cpu to an i7 if i wish.
>>
>>56311882
Now think, is a x230 with no battery with cracks a good deal for $60? You'll have to buy the battery for another $70 and then a palmrest for $10 and you'll have spent $140 for a cracked laptop at the base that can't be fixed unless you buy a whole new underside for it, which is a bit more expensive than a simple palmrest. And it only has a 60gb ssd.

Doesn't seem like a very good deal to me.

Can confirm, the G40's were the biggest ThinkPads, its thicker than a W700ds but doesn't weigh as much.
Main part is because it uses a desktop processor, there is a Dell Inspiron I came across that had a P4 and I think was bigger but produced a hella scary high pitched warning sound.

The G41 removed the floppy port and put in an nVidia FX go 5200.

I have no idea what the G50 changed.
Putting up the G40 I have on the market for golds

OMG thats the rarest thinkpad on the left, POST MORE
>>
>>56311957
Is there a t420 that is around $150
>>
>>56311933
As I showed, you don't have to spend that much for the battery. Palm rest is cheap, and the given hardware is really nice for what you're given. He's buying a used Thinkpad, don't expect perfect condition. My x201 came in really good condition, but I also paid $150 for this thing. $60 is really nice for what it is.

If the underside is broken as well (Kinda doubt it, that should be made of metal), sure that's more expensive, but you're getting a third generation i-series for $60, and it comes with everything else you need for a working laptop. Not that bad a deal!

I'm trying to change the Thinkpad logo on the BIOS but when trying to flash it this happens.

I'm following this tutorial if it matters: http://giocc.com/custom-bios-splash-screen-for-new-thinkpad-series.html
>>
>>56314362
I don't have my t430 yet, just ordered it
I just did it with my t420 to get it to work, and I'm going to show my friend how to do it on his later on.
I'm still not 100% sure how/if i can de whitelist the t430s bios. Someone online said it was encrypted, but from the guide that I found that image he used a special bios flashing tool to do it (then the tape for BT).
At worst the t430 ill be getting has the nicer intel a/b/g/n wifi, my t420 had some dogshit one so getting this AC card was huge.
>>
>>56314442
Ok, that's in line with what I thought. Hardware flashing is the only way to do it on the '30 series and I'm not even sure there's been much success. With the EC flash solving the keyboard and battery problems, minor cost differences and a de-whitelisted BIOS for wireless AC are really the only reasons to stick with the '20 series.
>>
>>56314684
oh so does flashing the EC get rid of the bios whitelist thing too?
odds are ill probably keep my t420, and upgrade it to a 1600x900 screen, and fix the hinges later on.
then I'll probably just use it as a dicking around computer
Or I'll just sell it online for like $150 and profit about $40 on it
>>
>>56314781
>oh so does flashing the EC get rid of the bios whitelist thing too?
meant battery
>>
>>56314781
EC flashing let's you defeat the battery authorization which will let you use genuine '20 series batteries, Chinese batteries, and a '20 series keyboard (with 2 Fn+combos you don't use anyways gimped and minus the caps lock light).

Batt and keyboard fixes can be applied individually or together, like I did for my x230.

Doesn't affect BIOS whitelist unfortunately. The embedded controller is a separate piece of hardware from the BIOS.
>>
>>56314836

It's slightly fiddly but not hard. I'm not home or I'd pull up the link for you, but search the archive for "patch.OFF". It's been discussed sometime this week or last. The readme on the site is pretty straightforward. I'm in and out of these threads so if you get stuck, just ask. Me or somebody else will eventually chime in.

OK guys, never had a Thinkpad before. My family has always owned whatever dogshit Toshiba (or occasionally Acer) laptop they could pick up from Staples for under $700. Right now I have a low-res Satellite that is falling apart after only 3 years of use.

I don't have a lot of money, but I want an imposing Thinkpad with a nice high-res screen and good cooling. What does /tpg/ think of the W500? I can get one off my local Craigslist for $200. It has a 160 GB hard drive and 4 GB of RAM. The resolution is 1680x1050, which seems really good compared to my current laptop (1366x768). I'm kind of curious to see what a 16:10 laptop is like since I've never owned one. Should I pull the trigger?

My company has the same Lenovo discount that's available to Coca-Cola. So what are the alternatives you give the poor guy? He asks for something with a high-res screen, he's looking to get into Thinkpads for the first time, and you post two corporate lease specials with no OS and the lowest-resolution, shittiest screen possible? The Lenovo 1366x768 panel is beyond terrible, it's completely fucking humiliated by some of the lowest-end Costco laptops. It is so bad words cannot even describe it. I still have fucking nightmares from trying to use my company's T430 on the train.

Workstations cost more money now because they cost more to begin with. While $200 for a W500 is probably $50 too much, it's not totally outrageous, especially if you consider the cost of shipping from eBay. Then more modern machines like the W530 can easily set you back $500 or more. That's the price you pay for quad-core processors, massive amounts of RAM, workstation-grade graphics and a screen that is not completely embarrassing to be seen with.

You sound like some sort of reactionary neckbeard, or a 16-year-old. Find something fit for purpose, or don't post at all.
>>
>>56316634
Well, I'm using a T420 with a 1600x900 screen, which is plenty good for my use case of shitposting machine. I posted somewhat decent priced machines for options sake.
If he wants a W series anything, I'd say put up about $300 and look for a W520. Sandy Bridge CPU is the best bang to buck ratio at the moment.

Also, I'm not a neckbeard. I can't grow a halfway decent beard.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/ThinkPad-W520-Core-i7-2720QM-4GB-RAM-500-GB-HD-QUADRO-1000M-1920x1080-HD-Win-7-/272268468167?hash=item3f64771fc7:g:4jwAAOSwnNBXWI~T

What state are you in?
I just got lucky, my boss hired me while browsing craiglist for computer repair services, he liked that I had ebay experience in selling laptops.

I'm not sure how to really go about it, my work company bought out a company that recycles lightbulbs, then they started telling their clients they take in e-waste for a lower rate, we get a bunch of junk lol

A lot of people want to recycle have three different mindsets to be green
>what will you pay for me for this? Its working great it cost me $2,000 a few years back (it ain't worth $40)
>what do you mean I have to pay you? I'll just throw it away in the trash! >:(
>Here you go! lol I broke it, I don't need it, just bought something better! :D

I tried to apply to Arrow and Iron Mountain, but I don't have any certs, plus muh DUI so I can't drive a truck :(

One company who we sell LCDs to told us they just got a truck and went knocking door to door to homes and businesses if they had any electronic waste, they'd take it from them. The real money is getting a government or enterprise contract imo.
Its just tough if you want to break down a computer fully or leave some components in.
A lot of recycled materials dropped in price.
Right now we have a barrel trash can of RAM, a small trash can of processors is just like $250.
I'm a bit lucky for having mexico close, a lot of core 2 duo desktop buyers, but its slow right now.
>>
>>56317598
Shit man, I'd love to go door to door to try to get some free shit to sell for cash.
Hate being broke.

>>
>>56317635
Well what do you know?
I advertised on craiglist that I did computer repair. My rate was $20 for two hours, I'll go to their location. Some people would like my work and tip me, so instead of $20, I'd get $50 for removing a Windows password (Offline NT Password remover), Virus scan (.rkill, malwarebytes scan, Windows Defender scan & install). Sometimes I'll install Office & activate it, but I'm a bit of a primadonna about selling pirated software and don't advertise that sort of shit anymore. (I'm for pirating music/movies but not for resell). The good side is being recommended or a returning customer (as in they got another project or problem they've been putting back). But things like Active Directory, Excel, & other programs I don't know... so sometimes I'd come into those problems.

People can be cheap too, especially mac people at time lol.

I told myself that I should go door to door to offer my services but I'm lazy & kinda unconfident to do so. I just hate people who want 'windows installed' but then like freak out that its 'too expensive' when it costs more than $10, I fucking hate finding drivers for USB ports, graphics + ethernet or wifi, fuck that waste of time for two beers at a pub.

I was thinking of watching cybrary.it videos and then advertising that I'm "certified" by them when finished lol

>>56317784
>those pirated programs
I'd buy, decent price, maybe knock a few bucks down because pirated bullshit. They'll rip out the COAs btw.
>>
>>56317864
>$20 for two hours, I'll go to their location
that's pajeet-tier low status work, why don't you grow some ambition
>>
>>56317864
I'm both the people you responded to.

Shit, going to them costs a fuckton of gas. But yeah, selling pirated software can get you in trouble.

And Macfags are cheap as fuck. Of course they are. They spent far too much money on the hardware, so why would they want to pay to fix the software.

Can't afford to buy that computer at the moment. And who needs a COA huh?

I've always wanted a t420, but the fact that you have to buy it used/refurbished is a huge turnoff for me.

>>
>>56307991
it's a fucking tank, great as a desktop replacement and you can do CAD and some light gaming with the nvidia gpu.
If you plan on moving around and carrying that with you all the time go for a T420 or X220.
>>
>>56317968
>but the fact that you have to buy it used/refurbished is a huge turnoff for me.
Why?

>Afraid that it'll fail.
Get a new motherboard/thing prone to failure.

>Afraid of dried semen from past owner
Get new keyboard/palmrest.

>Afraid that looks rufgged/scratched
Replace it for a new one.

Chances are that getting an used t420 + replacing some of those parts is still going to be cheaper than a worse new shitbook.

>Replace rugged/scratched part for a new one*
>>
>>56318017
Used tech is just something that I've never bothered with before, and I'm kind of nervous of buying something as significant as a laptop that is used.
It's nice that the Thinkpad are so modular and many of the parts can be replaced (something I really appreciate about them), but I don't want to buy a laptop and have to buy a few extra parts myself if there is an alternative laptop that works ootb.

Hi
>>
>>56318048
I never bought anything used before, had the same ideas you have about it... I was wrong. Bought 3 memepads already, the one I kept is the one that has a couple of scratches, the other two were in perfect condition one of them was technically brand new. It seems that someone stole a full shipment of thinkpads, and the guy who sold it to me bought it from some shady dude. Long story short the thinkpad was brand new 2012, he started using it last year and the battery only had 26 cycles.
Got it, installed Arch and just wonder off to the lenovo site with the part number and after a couple of searches found out that it belonged to the stolen shipment.
>>
>>56318048
>Used tech is just something that I've never bothered with before, and I'm kind of nervous of buying something as significant as a laptop that is used.
I was like that for a while, then i got a refurbished t420 and a refurb htc one m8.

Both still going strong without issues.

Anyway i don't think there's a similar modular laptop like the t420 brand new with the same price/perf so I'd say go for it, the only thing you need to check is for an unlocked bios and the computrace thing.

and I had an x220 and my friend had an x220t and they never throttled.
They got hot (into the 90s) but never went below their rated clock speed under load unless I told them to.
also the FBI was able to contract out someone to get the files off the bernadino guy's iphone, although the newer ones are supposed to be better about it.
and even macs have IPS glow issues.
fuck just look at this image of my 2013 21.5" imac, it makes that x220 look amazing. Granted it doesn't look that bad in person, and at a reasonable brightness you can't see it during normal use (just like with my x220, and I assume with my friends x220t)

Hell shitting on Apple was the reason why I got my first iphone, and a big reason why I have 3 macs.

Hell, I can even send in bad GPU MacBooks Pros to Apple and charge people for that free repair, tell em that 'I'm waiting for the motherboard that's specifically made for your laptop'.

>>56317915
Well I live in San Diego, gas no matter much to me.
I mean you can have them come to you, but people are flaaaaaky as shit dude. I hate waiting on people because they'll have an excuse, I tried making appointments, its best to just make it sound you're a busy person, because then they'll prioritize your work
>selling an iMac and some dude gave me an offer for $300, said he'll come by Monday
>told him, yeah I'll take it the offer, but I'm not going to hold you this item if someone is gonna come by and buy it at the asking price, or similar offer

Gas & expenses are no issue if you pay to become a business/contractor, you can write it off.

Almost all iMacs are crippled by power surges
lets pretend there isn't a GPU issue on multiple Macbook Pros models.
Also had IBM made PowerPC Computers/ThinkPads earlier, NASA may have bought into that instead of PowerMacs because of that floating point issue on pentiums.

Sure, it's not an x130e with 4GB of RAM and a shitty dual-core E-350, and sure it can flip into a tablet

It's to enlist you into the Cult of Applel. That's how it works, man. They send you the sticker, you stick it onto your car, or your weelie bin, whatever, just to advertise the fact that you have the disposable income to afford something like a Mac or an iPhone.

Basically, free advertising. Make people wanna be in the cool crowd.
