IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Ignore the other post, It's really late here and I didn't realise there's a new thread:

>>
>>56272981
Why don't you just reflash it yourself? It's easy if it's not S or T.
>>
>>56272981

See >>56271086

I'm taking an old laptop and make it freedum-enabled myself.

I'll slap and SSD in it, and a new wireless card, and still that doesnt amount 300€.

Minifree charges you about 400€ for the least equipped thinkpad. If you already have electronic tinkering abilities, and hardware to flash the bios, you could do it yourself.

Plus, buying from them may make you end up in a list, implying that we all are not in a list already.
>>
>>56273210
By laptop I meant thinkpad x200.

Try to aquire the one with the best clock speed, because core 2 duo are starting to fall behind.
>>
>>56267594
>>What do?
Get an Intel T61 board, the Nvidia model will keep dying forever
It might be cheaper to obtain the board from another T61, and keep it as a parts laptop

So there's no actual way to fix it, just abandon the whole motherboard?

The ebay prices are toxic for an eurobong, concidering most of the thinkpads that come from US including shipping and import charges

Alright yeah minifree's stuff seems to be badly priced, what thinkpad do you think it's decent? I don't want it for gaming but I want to be able to multitask and program.
>>
>>56273528
Fine Thinkpad alternatives. Inferior keyboard and clitmouse, but superior touchpad, an optical drive that can be swapped for a second HDD on the 12" models, and they look more modern, if you're into that.

If you are looking for nonfree thinkpads, the ones on the OP are great: T420 and X220

If you are decided to install libreboot, T400 for power, X200 for portability. 4GB RAM are enough for many tasks, and an SSD will make pageswapping fast enough for it not being a hassle.

My X200 will arrive in a week or so. I'll report its performance (with a gnu/linux distro i still havent decided)

>he cant spend another 7 dollars for 2*4G dimms.

>>56273711
Basically you got to file off a part of the T60's chassis to fit the T61 motherboard & you'll have to remove the modem card.

They are cool, some models don't have a middle button so that sucks.

Not sure, I don't think its been done before.
Might just work or there might just be an extra pin for the backlight.

>>56272779
Because thats where the WiFi is at.
Good luck, I don't know if there was a bios to remove the whitelist.
>>
>>56273919
It's not because of the dollars.
It's because that motherboard has tricky and picky 8gb RAM support, and, because of the processor being a bit old, I may want to use a light distro, therefore not meeding that much RAM.

I have 4GB RAM + SSD in my main laptop, I use to have 12 chrome tabs, programming/CAD software, music, and still have time to compile stuff in the background.

Except for heavy load under virtualization, 4GB is good. And I insist on the importace of having the swap partition on an SSD: It makes pageswapping fast enough not to even notice

sup /g/

i recently bought a t61 used off craigslist, my first thinkpad, was a lil disappointed by the screen size but, all is well, but now this shit is happening. what is this? it seems like the right screen hinge is completely coming off the laptop, and i haven't been shutting or opening it hard. it just seems to be breaking by itself.

wat do?

I just got a W510 yesterday. Going to purchase a SSD and maybe another with the CD bay replacement. The battery it came with only seems to keep a charge for two hours, so I'm going to get another one as well. Further down the line I'll replace the 1600x900 and get a FHD screen. The memory was already at 16GB, so I'm good there. Anything else that I should look into? It'll be running Slackware if that makes any difference.
>>
>>56275990

Interested in response. My take is a no.
Maybe doom... And morrowind may run at ~10fps

Is it really hard to find any in good condition now?
>>
>>56277140
I don't even have a ThinkPad, but I've made a Hackintosh before. If you don't have any Apple hardware, you can borrow from your friend but if they're /g/entoomen also make a virtual machine of El Capitan or Yosemite then download everything on there and put it on the ThinkPad.

Beware though, TonyMacx86 thinks everyone should still have a fucking Fagdevice and they'll ban you if you have an error with the virtual machine or using Unibeast on the VM.
>>
Whats the best used/new Thinkpad I could get for $500.

Id like an i5 or better and a 1080p screen would be nice. Im going to use it in the dental field and some of the software requirements are a "Intel Core i3 Processor, 3.4 GHz or better"

Some guy in the last thread said a T440p would be a good choice but I cant find one used with a 1080p screen.
>>
>>56277712
The x40 series are widely disliked among thinkpad users, not sure who told you to get one.
I'd probably go for a w530, high specs and a 1080p screen, though it's quite a hefty machine so keep that in mind.

Many like the carbon x1 too, so look into that also.
>>
>>56277712
T440 is a good hoice if you can find one indeed
The only thing recommended is replacing the touchpad with a t450 touchpad

>>56277942
X40 series is good only thing is touchpad and a bit keyboard but people not recommending them because of that are fucking retards

does the X200t have inferior build quality? My ancient one has a broken latch, mangled battery, ethernet port that doesnt stay connected unless you hold the cable in, cracks in the frame on either side of the keyboard, and a ton of slop in the hinge.

I'm looking for something reliable, cheap, light, and not fast.
>>
>>56278324
They do, they don't have steel hinges and they're made to be as light as possible due to their tablet functionality.

Anons, what are the best models I can get for 200~300 USD on ebay (for a used one obviously).

I plan to only use it for 4chan, watching anime and doing small projects on it.

>>56282039
What are you on about?
>>
>>56282107
depends, how retarded are you?
have you ever take a desktop apart? A thinkpad is just a little bit harder.
take out all the screws from the bottom.
take out the hard drive, take out the screw from under the hard drive.
take off the ram cover, take out the screws from there too
there's some under the battery too
after that flip it over and take out the keyboard and be careful when you unplug it so you don't rip the cable.
after that use a spudger of some sort top get the wrist wrest off of the bottom of the laptop (be careful around the audio port)
then unscrew the screws on the cpu and gpu slowly and diagonally.
once the heatsink is loose and unplugged scoot it to the side a bit, then wiggle it and pull it out slowly.
it was a really tight fit in and out, but once you find the sweet spot it will just slide out
>>
>>56272378
I ran the thinkpad battery check thing from lenovo to see if I could get a free battery, but it said my battery is fine.

real shame as I love the rest of the laptop, but this performance decrease is unmanageable
>>
>>56282722
yeah with my w520 the gpu will throttle under cpu and gpu load, and IDK why.
what gpu does yours have? mine is only the 1000m, not the higher power 2000m, and even that one throttles.
also does yours alternate between like 170ishmhz and like 700ish instead of juts constantly being at a lower clock?

just because it's running hot doesn't mean it's throttling
the gpu can run at 99c just fine for a long time.
use msi afterburner to see clock speed.
also make sure your cpu isn't at 100% load in case it's actually your cpu not able to feed frames to your gpu fast enough.

I daresay even the keyshapes are too.

The reason nobody likes the chiclet boards is they ditched the 7th row up top

I did the x220 keyboard into x230 mod, and while I like the extra keys I am definitely hitting wrong keys way more fucking often

I think the chiclet keyboard has higher travel distance and the keys actually feel LESS flat because it's just gaps instead of the sloped edges

The keys are curved in too so they don't feel like typical chiclet keys

There's no faster fans, but you can repaste your heatsink and clean it, that alone should lower the temps to usable ranges
Otherwise you can set the fan to the maximum speed it has, which by default won't use, on Windows tpfancontrol is an easy as fuck program to set your fans, set it in manual mode and use the 64 value
On older ThinkPads the 64 value might actually damage the fans, but that's only on T4X and older machines iirc

Is there any way to actually disassemble the T420's fan? On my T60 I was able to bend these metal tabs and peel back that foil tape to remove the fan. This helped fix the grinding noise it was making because it was easy to drop oil into the bearings.

Whenever I was replacing the thermal paste on my T420 it didn't look like there was a way to do this. Why does /g/ recommend the T420? The one I had was one of the least impressive ThinkPad that I've owned.

Frankly the worst TN display I've ever seen. I had the 1600x900 variant and the extra resolution didn't compensate whatsoever.

Also doesn't have USB3, which isn't a massive deal but looking forward I think it kinda is.

Sold mine and added another 50% on top to get a X230 with an IPS display which is frankly stunning. Very happy with this machine. Chiclet keys being terrible seems to be a meme, although I do prefer the 7 row layout on older ThinkPad.

Just thought I'd share this experience, not that any of you care, I'm sure.

I'll be getting an IPS screen for my X250, should I go with the 1920x1080 one or stay at 1366x768?

There's no way I'll be able to comfortably use 1920x1080 without scaling on a 12 inch screen, and scaling can be a pain in the ass.

You can get 2x8GiB for less than $50 and it's super easy to install. You'll want 16GiB total if you're running a virtual machine, some IDE and a web browser at the same time.

Getting a single 4GiB or 8GiB stick as an upgrade is also an option if you don't want to max out for some reason. RAM support should be pretty good on T430 but if you want to play it safe some manufacturers advertise support for ThinkPads.

I got CT2KIT102464BF160B which will max out the stock T430.

I should have just asked how expensive the RAM is since I saw some discussion that DDR2 is expensive. DDR3 isn't bad so you're right.

I googled it for you this is probably the best you'll get https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/ht035729 if your laptop's working fine probably no reason to worry.

Anyway I'm unsure whether to ask this here or in /fglt/ but I'm installing Gentoo and when I install Grub I get: efibootmgr: efi variables are not supported and the system doesn't boot. And when I set UEFI/Legacy Boot in BIOS to UEFI only my LiveUSB doesn't boot.
Does anyone know the problem? Should I use mbr/BIOS instead of gpt/UEFI? Is it a problem with the LiveUSB?

Fun. Just installed it today. It is as quick as linux is on it. It uses 2gb of ram (of 8GB) at idle so its not light at all but that is to be expected of 10.11. I havent had any issues with it that arent fixable at least. Both the trackpoint and trackpad work. I havent installed the modded bios and a compatible wifi card yet and I'll probably just get a usb one anyways.

Alright
I sold a mortorcycle frame on eBay for like $300+shipping. Sent the thing out and everything. Guy put in a claim saying I had never sent it. I couldn't find the receipt with the tracking number because I sent a fuckton of things at once. eBay had already had it, but PayPal was saying I had to give it to them, and eBay was not giving me the tracking number back.
So, PayPal still flags my social security number to this day. I just made a seperate PayPal account with a different bank account number n shit without my SSN so that I can sell on Swappa instead.
I'm not giving PayPal nearly $400 to get my old account back. Fuck them.

Wow...
Man that sucks
I had a problem when returning a go pro
back then returns you had to put in tracking numbering when you printed the label.
I forgot to jot it down and lost it, luckily eBay had it, but it was dumb you had to write down, when usually all packages sent/received had tracking put in automatically, but not returns.

I don't know if I got my money from my W700ds lol

I think I did... but im not sure with all the fees, paypal percentages when I had to sell like 8 laptops one week.
