>>
You dig a hole and cry yourself to sleep.
>>
I buy a CHIP and pick up one of the thousand CRT TVs that are being given away. I put the rest of the money toward gas to get to the job I so desparately need.
>>
I don't build one because if I only have $150 I have bigger problems than which PC to build.
>>
>>56296848
Buy some dell optiplex
>>
>>56296848
Buy some shitty used laptop off ebay.

Jesus fucking christ, will you just delete yourself?
>>
>>56296848
Suck someones dick on craiglist for old pc.
>>
Go to local computer co-op
build 5 computers and get 6th one free
Upgrade whatever I need to on the inside with cheap parts since I now already have a base to work with
>>
ebay a used xeon + motherboard + ram combo
salvage old hard drive
30$ case+psu

that's like 90 right there
then just find a cheap used gpu (evga b-stock) for 60$

shit's easy lol
>>
If I don't need to run Windows, I'd just get a Raspberry Pi, a cheap LCD panel, and find a KB+M. Should be fine for a lot of tasks.
>>
>>56296978
I got a $20 desktop off craigslist that kicks raspberry pi in everyday computing

Why bother with a case?
>>
>>56296848
I'd ransack the electronic waste bin behind the local university for a tower and possibly something to start with and then proceed to hunt for parts on some site like craigslist or ebay.

I figure most people probably prefer having one.
>>

You could've gotten under the limit with an ATX or microATX case.

you'd be better off buying used or getting a free optiplex from a hospital or university and throwing a tiny bit of money at it. buying new isn't all that feasible but i tried (no scree/os/accessories, case)

You can make 2U and 4U chassis quiet easily. Even after replacing the fans in my ASA 5510 which is just a Pentium 4 in a 1U chassis, it is quiet. Although the fans would probably eat through most of the budget.
>>
>>56296848
I've got some old odds and ends lying in a box, GPU, 480W PSU, wireless adapter etc, really need to get around to putting them all in a case, just missing a $35 mini motherboard and a case.

Dumpster diving for a case would be the first priority. Hopefully you find a DVD drive, maybe a PSU too.

What you buy then depends on usage scenario. Gaming? Mom's office PC? Home server? HTPC?

Overclockable dual core with a 480w power supply. Room to grow, and plenty of sata connections.
>>
>>56304305
And if you want to save an extra 2$, buy the cheapest case and power supply, however, you'll be sacrificing drive bays for potential storage upgrades.

>>
>>56305413
Shhhh
>>
>>56296848
logical increments ain't a bad start in that situation....

Also, consider getting a cheap case that comes with PSU. They're REALLY cheap, and will last you long enough to get online, find a job on craigslist (if you do, please make them use condoms), and save up money for a better machine.

That said, I just threw together a $300 PC based around an intel 6100. Dropping down to a celeron, getting less RAM, and a case that comes with PSU should get you there. And you will still be able to upgrade with better parts that aren't out-of-date.

You could probably go below the $150 mark if you dumpster dived a few parts like drives, cases and PSUs.
>>
some old optiplex then throw a q6600 in it

OP here.

Thanks for all the replies, I'm amazed at how similar all the builds are in relation to what I researched myself. It's kinda sad that there are so few reviews of the low end of the market so you really don't know what you're getting performance wise.

I'm surprised by the quality of the used computers you guys found though. Most of the ones here in the UK are literal dogshit for twice the price.

Guess I'm just gonna have to keep scouring the used market to find something decent.
