Just so you guys have something to discuss, I'll post my $1100 budget build for 1440p @60hz gaming. All black and white. Ssd is already purchased.

Can anyone please view the two builds I have here and give their opinions on which one is better. And yes, I realize that these are non-K CPUs but I won't be overclocking. The z170 is essentially for the higher RAM frequencies with very little price difference between the two. Sound card is in the first build because the mobo is shittier.

Thanks /g/.

What the fuck is this shit? is the motherboard really defective? its like the dimm slots are fucked up and dont make contact.

also I dont see the bios screen until about 9 seconds, is this normal?

what's low powered mini-itx/processor combo for a NAS. something like 60AUD for processor
>>
>>56288968
Sound cards are a meme unless you actually are powering a 5.1/7.1 setup. If you care about audio quality, just get an external DAC/AMP, but chances are your headphones aren't good enough to benefit off one in the first place. Between the two builds, I'd probably go with the former (left).
>>
>>56288968
If the sound in the b150 Mobo is so bad why not just spend $10 more to get a better board?
>>
>>56289036
Go xeon. Use ECC ram.
>>
>>56289074

Cool, I'll remove the sound card then.

Any other particular reason the former is the wiser choice?

Hey /pcbg/, this is my first time building a PC and I'm looking for any opinions or advice?

My budget is around around €1000, preferably not more than €1100. Thinking of dropping the HDD and Optical Drive from the build just to save money and maybe get them when needed.

I enjoy gaming but its not the main purpose of the build, it'll be used more for development and I use VMs often for testing purposes. I'm happy enough being able to play games on highish quality at 1080p.

Any advice, especially on motherboard/case is appreciated.

All you negros talking about pc parts...

Why does the guy in the pic have a PSU he has taken apart while hes cutting the cables?

Other than ebay and craigslist, what are some good sites to buy used computer parts?
>>
>>56288968
Intel's stock cooler is fine. You don't need anything aftermarket.
>>
>>56291186
Don't buy a gtx 970. A 1060 is better in every single way, and often cheaper.
Power supply is super highly reviewed, but really expensive. I say go with a cheaper unit. The rest seems mostly fine.
>>
I've been looking for a new monitor, preferably 27"+
Assuming price isn't the killer, what are yall opinions on these? Or, is there something better I haven't listed?
Big surprise, im going to do the video games on it. I also have a 1080 on the way.

For the one on the right, why not just pay the $6 more for the 6600K? You don't even have to overclock it.

>>56293929
That cooler looks less effective compared to the more common tower design. How are the reviews?
Estimated power use even with SLI is under 600W. 1000 is fucking ridiculous overkill.
Will you ever use that blu-ray burner?

>>56293889

>>
>>56295826

>For the one on the right, why not just pay the $6 more for the 6600K? You don't even have to overclock it.

Because I don't intend to OC at all, apart from the RAM. The 6600 and the 6600k are exactly the same if you don't OC. Also, the K version is 50 dollars more in CAN.

I've never built a computer before, and honestly I'm a bit anxious.

I went and read a bit about each part and it all seems decent.

But maybe there is something that might pop out to others who are more experienced.

Thanks.

Yep. I only thought about upgrading it when I noticed I was getting framedrops in TW3 with a 970 even when I turned down the settings.

Yeah bad FPS lows seems to be an issue with these older chips. I'm definitely getting an i7 this time around, or equivalent. The i7 3770k is holding up today much better today. Nearly matching Skylake i5 perf.

Thanks I'll look out for some sales. Are there any new cards coming out that might be more bang for buck?
>>
>>56299638

Nah these are the new bang for buck cards. You can see some benchmarks on Digital Foundry (Youtube).

MSI, Sapphire, and XFX are good choices for AMD

MSI, EVGA, Gigabyte, and Zotac are good for Nvidia

Usually a good idea to steer clear of ASUS right now with GPUs. If you see an ASUS card you like make sure you do some research into professional reviews to see if there are any cut corners that could affect thermal performance.

I have a Gsync screen. It is not that big a deal. And in most games other than Crysis/Witcher, you are going to get a high enough FPS that FreeSync is not going to matter.

I want a future proof pc that is very fast and powerful. I'd prefer a price around 1500. Through work I can get the processor for around $100 and hopefully the 1080 will go down in price when I have enough money to buy. Advice on lowering price further while not sacrificing a metric assload of performance?
>>
>>56300219
There is no such thing as a future proof PC.

But to lower prices:
-get a lesser HSF
-unless you have lots of blu-ray stuff, switch to a DVD OD
-you can always stick with 8GB, and add more later when needed
-you can get a cheaper full tower (though I have the 760T and it IS excellent!)
>>
I need a storage solution for my new build:

1) Pool up enough money for 1 quality SSD drive (1TB), shove everything on there (OS + Applications/Games) (Super expensive, ~$400)

2) Use existing 256GB SSD for OS, get a 1TB shitty SSD for applications/games. (expensive, ~$250)

Stupid question: I built my PC with i5 6500 + EVGA GYX 1060 GAMING + Asus VG248QE 144 Hz monitor. I can get around 110-150 fps on my games, but since they're old (2007-2008), they're not optimized for modern stuff, then the fps may drastically drop from one moment to another based on maps/players' amount ecc.ecc. They're both source games, then I'm wondering what I could expect if I turned V-sync on. Since I'm running them on a 144 Hz monitor, would V-sync limit the fps close to 144 fps or would it limit the fps to around 60 fps?

>>
>>56300356
Vsync will limit FPS to your screen refresh rate, or to a 1/multiple of the refresh rate.

So, 144, 72, 36, etc.

Meaning if you turn Vsync on and your are not getting 144+FPS, you will be getting 72FPS.

For a good graphics card that typically gets high FPS, better to keep Vsync off.

You can get black PCB versions from G.Skill:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231964 but unless your case is going to be lit up by LEDs on the inside I doubt you will be seeing the DIMMs. Especially if you have a large heatsink.
>Is there any reason other than price not to get the xtreme gmr RAM?
On some motherboards the RAM slots are too close to the CPU socket and if you don't get an HSF with high clearance the heatsinks will make it impossible to use some of the slots.

Also just don't support gaymur ele33t RAM. You're in SK; you know all RAM is manufactured by the same 3 Korean companies. Don't pay more for some stupid pieces of red metal.

I have chosen my parts and I'm about to order it. The site I'm ordering from offers a service to build the PC and test it on compatibility etc. for 100€.
Now a 100€ isn't nothing to me, so I'd prefer building it myself but I've never done that before.

How hard is it actually? I think I'd be able to put the parts together as it seems fairly "Lego". But what I'm afraid of is putting the cables and stuff in badly. I always see them neatly done in guts threads but I dunno if I'm too stupid for that.
I'm also unsure how to place the fans. I read a lot that it makes a difference because of air circulation and shit, resulting in better or worse cooling.

Any advice?

Honestly not a horrible deal. I don't know what eu prices are like but you can easily put together a 6500+ 1060 list for $800usd. Would you pay someone 100 euro to put together a machine for you? Your choice. Also keep in mind, you'll have oem bloatware if you don't reinstall windows, and expansion might be sketchy in the future.

Generally it could be fine, but I would dismiss the aftermarket cooler (i5 6500 doesn't need it), I would get a cheaper mobo (Asus H110 m-whatever works well for the price) and I would get a more perfomant RAM, like the Kingston Savage 1x8 GB (less CL, no heat spreader, only a bit more expensive than the RAM you chose). I would suggest to invest the extra money you saved for a better SSD (Samsung 850 Evo 250 GB).

buy a hyper t4 instead - its $25 but currently a $15 mail in rebate. You're running a non-overclocking cpu, you dont need an aggressive cooler.

750 watts is also waayyy overkill for your needs. I recommend dropping to a 550w, which is still overkill for your needs but sub 500w I don't personally trust.

A 120gb or 250gb ssd would be a nice upgrade for your price tier.

CS has traditionally been about standing still and shooting at your opponents in bursts or taps, CSGO changes that into a weird sprayfest where a lot of weapons can be fired on the move, but in a very awkward and not very skillful way. If I want a shooter that it about moving and tracking there are much better options, CS should try to excel at being CS.

>>56315103
In a recent patch they changed how weapons behave. Essentially, spraying has been punished massively and tapping is now a lot more favored. I think they fiddled with running accuracy too.

Hey guys,

I got a 'free' pc from britbong government for my degree. Was pretty shit.

I'm a totally learner at this kind of stuff but installing ram (16gb) any retard could do. And after a quick Google on how to do it installed a gtx 980. Because I'm retarded I didn't realise is need a new power supply (980 needed twice as many pins),so bought a 559 GS from Evga who I got the 980 from.

Issue is I'm still getting issues with Deus Ex: MC, Warhammer total war, Star citizen etc.

I'm sure we all chase the 60 fps for everything dream so I was wondering what next to do. The ram and GPU were obvious replacements but now I'm kinda lost.

Friend told me it might be that I don't have a SSD. (Whenever I rotate quickly or enter a new area in Deus Ex or SC the game freezes up), which makes sense to me.

Before I shrill £180+ on a 1TB drive I was wondering if there was anything else I should improve?

Also can I just stick the hard drive in with my old disk still installed, transfer the data then remove the old disk? Some things on the internet are saying I need a special kit but its smelling a little scammy to me.

Thanks for any help, pic related my pc right now, opened it up to measure the size my storage currently takes up, to make sure I don't buy a ssd too large

I'm building a 6x8TB NAS + HTPC with 32GB ECC RAM, have all the main components but still need some odds and ends (sata power cables, etc).

This was originally intended to be purely a NAS build, in a smaller case with no GPU, but I decided to make it a hybrid NAS + HTPC.

I'm going to have it run NixOS as a VM host, with Windows 10, FreeNAS, and another NixOS guest. The Windows 10 VM will have direct access to the GPU with VGA Passthrough, and the FreeBSD guest will get direct access to the drives. I may partition the 500GB SSD to also act as a cache for the RAID-Z2 array.

What's listed isn't totally accurate, it is the NH-U14S rather than the NH-U12S, and I also have a slim blu ray drive included, for the rare physical media: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EL7C6YG

I just put the finishing touches on a PC that I had mostly finished for my brother a while ago. It's in an HAF-X case with an unlocked Broadwell Core i7 and 16GB of DDR3 and a custom loop XSPC water cooling system. I can't be assed to look up all the exact parts I used at the moment but that's not important.

What is important is that I just put a proper windowed case door on the thing with smoked acrylic, and installed a bunch of Corsair RGB LEDs inside that are now connected to the Corsair Link hub and can be set to any color. I also added sleeved power cables.

I could look up the full parts list but I rebuilt the thing about 6 months ago and I might have to look through my records a bit. Still, it's cool to see it all together now, especially since the old stock side door had a pretty unsightly crack on the window. My brother has had this case for about 7 years and I think it's held up quite nicely. At some point he wants to upgrade to a GTX 1080 and put it on water, so that will be another exciting adventure. He's got a really thick 360mm rad so he probably won't need an additional rad to compensate for the GPU, although I will have to do some evaluations on that.

Get some DEMCI magnetic filters.

http://www.demcifilter.com/c3/Filters-for-your-computer.aspx

I've used them on a few builds now and they work great. As long your fans are in a positive air pressure configuration (meaning you've got more fan power dedicated to sucking in cool air than pushing out hot air), you can control where the air is coming in and filter it. Washing them is really easy, too.

Wouldn't be down for an old beige case because of bad airflow and sound padding. Really like my Phanteks Eclipse P400s because all of the lights/RGB's can be turned off with the push of a button. This is also a fairly cheap case.

Without the money for a better cpu is it even worth it to use a 470?

I'm worried lads it took me 2 months to get the cpu to test the motherboard and tomorrow the motherboard should be back in the shop.

I thinking about getting another gpu next year or the year after.

>>
>>56318936
I can't tell you anything with out a location or general area.

But hang on to it 380x are going for $420NZD on trademe can't translate that into other currency.
Its not worth it to change to a RX480 or 1060 atm the difference is not viable
1070 looks worth it but wait for vega to get that price down and compere.

it not a good idea at this time of the year for buying anything as there is no good deals anywhere for a while.

go as high as you can afford when it comes to gpu's that it how it works.
>>
>>56319000
i mean, you're spending money on the case, psu, etc, so if you get a $120 gpu the rest of your components should also be budget-oriented

Those half-assed sub-ambient temperature setups really trigger me. It's basically begging for a fried system because of condensation.

Sub-ambient setups do work but there's a very specific way they have to be set up to prevent condensation. Going with a phase changer case is a viable option, but even with that it's really not worth the fuss. A simple AIO water cooler will get the job done just fine.

You might as well get the g3258 cpu instead depending on the types of games you play.
You are probably going to bottleneck the gpu first unless you do something like cities skylines.

Note that some games have no difference across cpus when paired with a titan.

I've been thinking of getting a RX 480, but I think my CPU will throttle it too much (760k.)

Should I wait until Zen CPUs release, or get the card now before the holiday rush?
>>
>>56322738
Why wait?
>>
>>56322808
Well, I don't know if I want to build a new PC from scratch, or just use older parts and replace them as I go.
>>
>>56322824

While a 6300 will be an upgrade over your 760k its not going to be night and day difference for the most part. So while a 480 will benefit you (i'm assuming you are coming from potato) your choices are;

1) overclock your 760k
2) use 6300 and overclock that
3) do a complete system rebuild
4) do 1) or 2) and do a complete rebuild when zen drops (either buying a zen chip or getting an intel one)

My gut says if you have a 6300 and a means to cool it beyond stock cooling i'd do that and hold out until zen drops - after all whats waiting 6 months in the grand scheme of things?
