I know fuck-all about monitors but need a new one because my old one is all flickery. I don't play games but use it to read things and program. Can someone PLEASE tell me what the better buy between these two monitors is. They're around $100 mark and the price diff between them is $10. Both are made by LG.

Monitor #1:
>22" Widescreen LED Monitor 1920 x 1080, 5ms GtG, Response TimeBrightness: 200cd/m2

Monitor #2 (extra $20):
>24" TN Widescreen LED Monitor, 1920x1080,5ms , BrightnessContrast Ratio: 1000:1

So, while #2 is 2" bigger, it's the same resolution.

Which of the two would you pick?

Would you like watching 1080p on a tiny 13'' monitor? Size matters too and 2'' diagonally are noticeable. Also, it has the sick Twisted Nematic panels for better refresh rate and shit. Don't be cheap with something that you'll be using for years, $20 is literally a meal.

Option #3, for $40 extra is this:

LG 22MP58VQ
>22" 60Hz 5ms IPS LED Monitor
Also by LG.

So, which of the 3 is best?

>>56221777
#1: LG 22M38D
#2: LG 24M38D-B

Good point. I'm just worried about increase in pixel size.

What about this IPS 22"?

if you're gonna spend that much get this

>>56221838
>ASUS VN248H-P
That one is a bit more expensive. I like prices of these cheaper LGs.

Hmm.. so what are the diff's between TN, IPS and "plain" LED screens?
>>
>>56221866
TN is 'faster' with worse color reproduction, the panels are cheaper which makes it easy to get 1080p 23"~ monitors for like 80$ on a good day.

IPS monitors have superior color reproduction, and wide viewing angles (meaning no color warping at weird angles, if your monitor is anywhere other than on a flat plane with your eyes). they tend to be slower in response time but at 60hz they can be just as fast as regular tn panels

never really read into led as a display but i assume response time is faster and they use less power so i can't give you an accurate description there

if the others are around 100, and one's 10 more, and the other is 40 more than that, you might as well get the vn248h-p lol
>>
>>56221898
Thanks bro! That LG IPS is on sale at BestBuy so the price is probably a lot lower than that Asus. I think I just might go for it. It's 22" (not 24" like that other TN one) but it's IPS.
>>
>>56221912
22" vs 24" isn't too big of a deal. you get more pixel density, maybe the monitor is smaller but you still have the same real estate on your screen otherwise. you also save a bit of space on your desk.

when you get it make sure the first thing you do is check for dead/stuck pixels.

sounds good, hope you enjoy

What's the difference between a 720 and 1080 video file?
I'm I just compared them side by side and they look the same. I tried it by decreasing the window size and looking at them side by side and I took a picture of both in full screen. Looks the same to me. Is it because my screen is too small? I'm on a 15.6in laptop, but the screen's resolution goes up to 1920x1080

You need three updates to do it properly:

support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3138612
microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=47351

and the most recent monthly "update rollup", in this case August-

Restart your computer or stop the update service before you begin installing them.

It's unlikely it would spread. That would have to be some mondo good coding on their part. Just scan whatever comes through when you're done. Also if you've unlocked your bootloader a factory reset might not be enough.

No, a flesh eating virus would have no possible way of impacting a car. A virus on a smartphone would just need to manipulate the file sharing protocols over usb in such a way that it could run code on the pc. It would be tricky, and probably not worth the effort at this point, but may very well be possible if enough motivation was there

I have a Thinkpad T400 with an Intel Core 2 Duo and 4GB of RAM. I can play Star Wars Battlefront 1 and 2 just fine with high settings. There's one other game I want to play which is Call of Duty World at War. It was so laggy (even with the lowest settings) that I couldn't get through the first level. What do I need to learn to be able to make simple games (like flappy bird)?
Is there something I can learn that will allow me to make those games work on both iOS and Android? I would like to give them to my friends when I do them, and they're split pretty much evenly between the two OSes.

Also, I've been wanting to learn Python for some time now to automate a few things I do online. would that work for small apps, or do I have to learn it separately?

Thanks in advance.

I'm trying to understand a little bit about MXM graphics cards. I have a Clevo D900F which currently has a GTX 480M and would like to know if I can install a beefier newer GPU inside.

Mostly because the CPU is a i7-980x and screen is a 1920x1200 and I'd hate to give up on a perfectly adequate machine just because the GPU is dated.

Why is newegg recommended the most for buying computers online, is it because it's the cheapest or do they have decent customer service with their warrenty and return/exchange policies? Would I be shooting myself in the foot if I bought something from ebay instead?
>>
>>56224952
the issue with eBay is you dont have the same level of accountability. You might have to jump through a hoop or two to contest the condition of an item if it isn't what you thought but with Newegg returns and RMAs are as simple as any other store.

Plus Newegg you can see customer reviews of products and eBay you can really only see reviews of them as a seller.

you can't make windows 10 "safer" from within the operating system, you need an external firewall, if you give a shit then use windows 7 or 8.1 stock RTM iso (plenty available on torrent sites or from microsoft directly if you have a genuine key) and don't install the updates that contain telemetry (or remove them afterwards but naturally it's better to just not install them in the first place)

all these shitty tools and guides floating around that promise to block or fix telemetry don't take into account the always on updates that can (and have done) revert settings and introduce new telemetry, and the tools are always shady as shit

FFmpeg question

I have a video file with a video track and an audio track and I want to add a song on top of that. I want the output file to have a single video track and a single audio track. In the audio track you must be able to listen to both the original audio and the song. I also want to be able to control the volume of the song or the original audio, or both of them.

ffmpeg -i "video.webm" -i "song.mp3" ^
-filter_complex "[0:a][1:a]amerge=inputs=2[a]" -map 0:v -map "[a]" ^
-c:v copy -c:a libvorbis -qscale:a 0 -ac 2 -shortest -y output.webm

That does what I want except for the volume part I can't seem to be able to control the volume of either the original audio or the song I'm adding in. I've tried asking Google, but none of the thing I found have worked so far.

So I'm gonna start out by saying I'm not that familiar with speakers and audio stuff. I got my hands on a Pioneer VSX-520-K Receiver, two front speakers, and a center speaker. I hooked everything up and it works fine, except my audio manager (Realtek Audio Manager) doesn't detect my center speaker.
Currently I have my PC hooked up to the receiver via aux cord, so I'm not sure if that's a reason why it's not detecting it.

tl;dr Audio manager not detecting center speaker, i would like it to. Also, are there other audio managers that I could use? Or am I stuck with Realtek.

What are the older codecs that I should use?

CPU : Intel i5 6500 ~202 €

motherboard : MSI H110M Pro-D ~60 €

Ram: TeamGroup Elite 8GB DDR4-2400MHz ~40 €

HDD: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" SATA ΙΙΙ ~52 €

SSD: Adata Premier SP550 240GB ~70 €

PSU: Aerocool Xpredator 550M ~62 €

Case: Cougar Spike ~25 €

for a total of: 511€

Some guy on reddit said that all looked okay but he doubted the PSU.Is there any danger to getting a non popular brand PSU?

Electrical contact cleaner. You can use parts cleaner, but you have to be quick to clean it off with alcohol because parts cleaner will eat the plastic parts.
>>
>>56226546

It generally looks good.

The SSD is pretty good, but the general opinion is that the Samsung 850 EVO 250GB is a bit better (and a bit more expensive probably).

Double-check the HDD, some caviar blues are rebranded greens, which may or may not be what you want.

Speaking of storage, you do have the option to skip the HDD and save money and/or get a better SSD. You can add the HDD in the future.

Your mobo supports only up to 2133mhz ram. Your RAM will work, but at a slightly lower speed. You might be able to find 2133 ram for slightly cheaper (it's not that it will make a difference in the end, it's just that you're not getting everything you're paying for).

I can't find much info about your psu, but Aerocool has a bad rep. Regardless, you should be able to find something like the evga 500b/600b or the Seasonic 520 S12II or M12II which are common recommendations for the price range. And yes, a bad PSU can take the rest of your build with it. In any case, according to a quick online calculation, your rig might never even reach 350W in consumption.

Just checked something, this mobo has a dvi port, so make sure your monitor can be connected and you have a cable, if you're going to wait until you get the GPU.

It's not that necessary, but if you do consider a better mobo, besides socket compatibility, make sure that it fits in your case (it takes up to mATX), and that it actually supports ddr4 (there are still some ddr3 skylake mobos). And the monitor port. These details are not being talked about very often and are easy to miss (ouch).

Windows gets updates no matter what, but it's not permanently activated. All the windows 10 "cracks" just sign you up for trials, then keep renewing them. The program has to keep running to keep renewing your trial, and if microsoft ever blocks it or changes their trial system you're screwed. 7 is easy to activate

https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php/Windows_7#Activation

but you want to make sure you verify the checksum of your ISO against MSDN

https://www.pcsteps.com/45-download-windows-7-iso-legally-free-digital-river/

Also if you're using a skylake processor you need to update the iso with a USB 3 patcher. You may be able to get a legitimate copy of 10 by using the accessibility update from a pirated copy of 7, but I haven't tried it myself.

I re-installed Windows 10 and now I'm having two weird cosmetic things that I'm wondering how to fix.

1) My start menu no longer has a seperate thing when it opens that only shows the most recent programs, instead it shows the entire list of installed programs.

2) On my lock screen theres like an advertisement for Microsoft edge where in the top left it says "Meet Microsoft Edge" and just randomly near the middle theres a "Go Beyond Browsing" thing. The thing in the top left isn't that big of a deal but the ugly link in the middle bothers me.

Anyone know how to fix these.

I'm saying you're barking up the wrong tree. Porting roms is pretty much not a thing. You can poke around XDA but I'm pretty sure you're going to be disappointed.

Recently I've noticed a medium-level noise coming from inside my desktop case. I had recently dealt with a wire lightly grazing the CPU fan and assumed it was happening again. Nope. After a bit of lazy investigation I discovered it was my GPU fan this time. One of the two seem to be wobbling slightly and rotating at what appear to be a slower speed. Plus every few seconds, for just an instant, it slows down even further before picking up the pace again.

Does this sound like a dying fan or an easy fix? It's a 6950 so I'm practically begging for an excuse to upgrade but in the meantime my GPU runs at ~80c if I don't manually crank the fans up to 75%. I'd buy a new GPU now but the prices are stupid and stock nonexistant.

Is it bad for the CPU if I run it at a lower than stock frequency? I have a 4690k so it's factory 3.5GHz, but is it harmful if during just regular browsing use I have it run at 1.7GHz or so? I'm using the windows power modes minimum and maximum CPU settings. So Min is 50% and max is 100%.

Is that harmful? My Core Voltage is usually under 1.0. Usually 0.8 or 0.9

None of this is harmful right?

Im experiencing random hard hangs on my new system and to rule out issues ran the memtest86. The memory seems to pass all the tests except the rowhammer test but this doesn't mean the memory is faulty right and just has the the very special case vulnerability? As in muh video games and desktop applications shouldn't be freezing the system because of it right?

Get a VPN, install a client torrent on a server and download them in HTTP, they usually wont see it.

So I recently moved across the country, and unfortunately, the house I'm currently renting doesn't have coax outs upstairs, for whatever reason. Because of this, until I find a more permanent solution, I can't hardwire my desktop to the internet, so I'm stuck using a wireless USB adapter.

So very shortly after moving in, I purchased this :
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008IFXQFU/ref=cm_sw_r_apa_6BjVxb1GJ5AMH

It works ok I guess, but I do get randomly disconnected, and sometimes get massive lag spikes. Now can I assume this is because I bought an adapter that's relatively cheap? Or is this just to be expected when my desktop isn't hardwired? If it's the former, can anyone recommend some really good USB adapters for me to look at? Price isn't too much of an issue, but I'd prefer not to spend too much on it if possible, I just want something more reliable

WIreless lags and disconnects are due to interference. RF intereferences are common in apartments due to phones/microwave/other wifis/etc.

Look into ethernet over powerline. Those are much more stable and similar to real line.

is there anyway to see the total amount of space being used in a folder? Counting all files in that folder as well as all subfolders and folders in the subfolders ect.

Help a dumb inept guy out please.

I very recently moved from Europe to the US.
I decided to take my PC with me, as it didn't cost me that much and it has value.
However, I couldn't take a monitor so I decided I'd buy one here.

When I came here I was really worried that the scanning at the airport damaged the components so i've been trying to hook it up with a tv using an HDMI cable but to no avail.

After that I picked up some shitty 15$ screen at a local pawn shop but it's VGA and didn't seem to work.

TL;DR, I'm trying to figure out if my graphic card can ONLY be connected to the kind of cable shown on the left picture.

If that's the case, what's the name/kind of that cable ?

What kind of monitors are compatible with that sort of cable ?
