Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread. ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

Reminder to try Debian/Hurd. Hurd is the FSF kernel and there are other kernels than Linux like HiStar, which is a security kernel and Muen, proven to have no compile time errors, both are GPL.

There is also other full operative systems like FreeVMS, FreeDOS, and even ReactOS which are under the GPL. Even Plan 9 was re-licensed as GPL.

From last thread:
>>56213061
>What is the most polished/reliable/predictable distro these days?
>Should I just go for straight Debian?
Yes. Go for the "non-free including cd firmware" unless you can handle almost exclusively FOSS. Then just read the relevant wiki/manual pages. Probably upgrade to Testing or Sid after installing for newer packages.

Or I guess go Ubuntu for slightly more polish out of the box. There really isn't much of a difference between the two, but since Ubuntu is based on Debian Unstable and almost encourages using 3rd party repositories, I think it's probably less reliable in the long run.
>>
>>56213517
>till Hurd is finished

>>56213557
>>56213557
There is a difference between been usable and constantly be under development.

You can drop the meme now.
>>
>>56213575
Ubuntu comes more polished out of the box, but it's more prone to errors in the long run, and upgrading from one version to the next doesn't work reliably.
Under the hood, Debian is the better system. My main gripe with it is that its designed mainly for server use, and if you go Testing/Unstable, you're officially unsupported by the devs (although even then it still is a more stable system than its derivatives like Ubuntu).
>>
>>56213557
It's slow because a microkernel is pretty difficult to debug and they only have a bunch of developers. Current version is 0.8. It's already usable for testing tho, check the Debian GNU/Hurd port for live isos.

It's been obsoleted by history.
It was meant to complete GNU and turn it into a complete system. That was in the 1980's.
Now Linux has a global market share of >50% across all consumer devices and likely >90% across all chipsets.
Hurd will never be able to do anything Linux hasn't done 10 years prior, but it's still a nice hobbyist project, I guess.

Well, technically Linux was obsolete at the day the development started since Linux is monolitic. (What?) Monolitc means that the kernel is one big thing doing all jobs at once, while Hurd is a set of small servers which do a few jobs individually. This results in better efficience and more speed. Microkernels are the future, but I agree that it will take some time.

There's nothing on Arch you can't do on other distros, and a fresh Arch install is both bigger, and more loaded with unnecessary stuff than an Ubuntu Netinstall.

>Is Sid more or less stable than Arch?
sid user here and have had very little trouble with it in 5 years on my desktop.

only time i've had issues have usually been down to my own fault for doing dist-upgrades to bring in held back packages.

i moved to sid from testing due to the fact that testing seemed to get very unstable around package freeze time - i guess devs rushed to make last minute changes and didn't test enough.

arch is okay but it's really a desktop os due to the fact they fuck around too much with the core system, debian (apart from systemduh) has had little change.

so for me it would be debian

if i had to go arch then manjaro might be my goto, instant desktop and slightly less bleeding edge kinda on par with sid.

I thought dist-upgrade was the normal, supported way of doing things?
>>
>>56214851
If you haven't rebooted in the meantime, there is nothing else to do. You removed a package, then reinstalled the same one. All the entries in Grub etc, are still there.
>>
>>56214851
Well your package manager probably did it for you, but you can always update grub as a final step ('sudo update-grub' on debian and i think ubuntu too) to be on the safe side. Look at its' output and confirm all your kernels are listed.
>>
>>56214805
i heard about that on arch you need to take careabout all dependencies and installing packages is harder than other distros, is that right?
>>
>>56214879
normal upgrade is the supported way of doing things.

dist-upgrade has the potential of breaking things by forcibly updating held-back packages, which are held back when some other installed packages are listed as dependant on the previously installed version, but not the new one.

No to both. Arch is a distro like any other.
It's defining characteristics are:

>no official installer (which is retarded IMO), so you have to install it using several different command line tools
>rolling release, which gives you up to date packages and changes your system over time instead of in one chunk once a year or so
>official repos don't include graphical system configuration tools. You're expected to edit text files for configuration.
>it has a very limited selection of software in the official repos, but it integrates a user-maintained, unsecured, unofficial repo based on source code packages very tightly and well.

No, the comparison was about fresh installs. You could argue that comparing that is stupid, but take it to the other Anon who started it.

As for your source, there are 2 things related to space
>It has never been a minimalist distribution. Splitting packages is rare
compared to other distributions, and dependencies aren't made optional
whenever possible.

This could indeed cause additional space needed, but is it really relevant to a fresh install?

Not really. It's controversial for reasons a new user won't understand nor needs to care about.

tl/dr; every modern/popular distro including Debian now uses systemd, devs think it's better than what was used before, and many people believe it goes against the "philosophy" behind Linux and will lead to problems, but none of these problems have really surfaced yet (after 4 years).

Arch is the *opposite* of a user-centric freedom. The opinion of users
has no weight here. Only the developers have an opinion, and there
aren't voting systems as there are in Debian. Technical decisions are
made based on merit via consensus among the developers, not popularity.

Right, because clearly your Ubuntu is ready to build software out of the box.

Intellectual checkmate, nignogs.

BTW if you get it to build you'll be so green that you won't know how to run it after you install it because it will install to /usr/local. That's all the hint I'll even give you because you're an awful poster that deserves no help.

You can use a search engine to see what this stuff means, you know.

That might not be a bad thing, it's possible there was nothing to be done for the make target install-data-am. Did you look to see if /usr/local/bin/cava exists? It looks like it installed it there if you just read what it says.

BTW since you seem actually just ignorant I will let your rudeness from earlier slide.

(you may want to reconfigure with ./configure --prefix=/usr so that you don't have to add /usr/local/bin to your PATH or type out the full path every time you want to use this software)

I've never understood why people have such a hard time with mpd.

~/.mpd/mpd.conf
music_directory "/home/jordan/music"
playlist_directory "/home/jordan/music/playlists"
db_file "/home/jordan/.mpd/mpd.db"
log_file "/home/jordan/.mpd/mpd.log"
error_file "/home/jordan/.mpd/mpd.error"
pid_file "/home/jordan/.mpd/mpd.pid"
user "jordan"

bind_to_address "localhost"
port "6600"

audio_output
{
type "alsa"
name "My ALSA Device"
}
mixer_type "software"

Make sure all the files you list in your mpd.conf exist
mkdir -p ~/.mpd/playlists
touch ~/.mpd/{mpd.db,mpd.log,mpd.error,mpd.pid}

Make sure all you're mpds are dead then restart it
killall -9 mpd
mpd

Update your database (I use mpc)
mpc update

Then run mpc a few times until it shows it's done updating
Now ncmpcpp will Just Werk

I literally don't understand what is so hard about reading the mpd.conf file and changing values. It's very well documented

man mpd
man ncmpcpp

I'm using ncmpc and I put up the alias
alias music='killall mpd; mpd; ncmpc -c'

ncmpcpp I assume to be used similarly.
when I add new stuff to my ~/Music directory, I delete the ~/mpd/mpd.db file and relaunch mpd, because I don't know what I'm doing either and killing and rewriting the database seems easier than reading up on how to update it.

then in ncmpc you press 1 for help and go from there.
the usual procedure i follow is
>press 2 to see if there's a playlist left from last time I used ncmpc
>if so, press c to clear it (works on any tab of ncmpc)
>press 3 to browse my music and select the directory whose contents I want to listen to
>with the folder selected, press a to append it to the empty playlist
>switch to the playlist with 2 and hit enter to start playing it from the selected song and onwards.

shrinking an existing windows partition is standard procedure when installing a gnu/linux distribution for dual booting.
there are always risks when fucking around with partitions, but I've never encountered any problems.

Most guides recommend booting into windows once or twice after the linux installation is finished so windows can repair its partition.

if you try to shrink a full (as in filled with data) partition you will be suffering though.

stay away from the FSF approved ones, they remove tons of proprietary drivers without replacing them with free ones.

If you have to ask about which distro to use you're probably new, though, so I recommend you use any ubuntu spinoff (NOT Ubuntu itself), Debian or Fedora.
>>
Except your instructions are shit and doesn't actually work.

I don't know what versions of mpd has support for the "error_file" entry, but mine didn't recognize that entry.

The { needs to be on the same line as audio_output, seperated by a space, or mpd can't parse the config file.

I don't know how mpd behaves on your system, but the one in debian/jessie can't intialize mpd.db on its' own, it'll just complain about the database being corrupt if your mpd.db file was only just touch'd. That can be fixed though, just grab a working database file from somewhere like the one that /etc/mpd.conf points at and rename that to mpd.db

Of course that last bit, along with the error_file thing, could just be outdated software on debian/jessie, but what do i know.

Oh and mpd appears to crash silently when it scans my music library. mpc update handles a folder with a single mp3 just fine, but my actual music library crashes it after ~1-2 seconds (as mpd stops running soon after giving the mpc update command).

It seems like a lot of work compared to just using Rythmbox or something, especially for a single user single desktop system.

I never used a GPU besides my laptop's integrated one on Linux, so I can't say how the drivers are, but it should at the very least work for everyday applications.
If you want videogames, look into GPU pass-through to a Windows VM, or if you truly want to defenestrate, you'll have to look for linux drivers or switch to Nvidia, which has better drivers on linux, as I heard.

>>
>>56218737
What didn't you like about it?
>>
>>56218814
I found it ugly and text was a bit difficult to read. I'll admit I bailed it too quickly and give it another try.

So I just installed Debian Unstable and XFCE4.

Why is there 2 imagemagick's in my start menu, why does one of them have no icon, and how do I get rid of it? Side question: I want touch to tap for my touchpad, but the option isn't there.

Do either of them work?
You might have a spare desktop laying around, or you manually associated it

>Do either of them work?
No, I think you're right about them being dead desktop files. Where are those on Debian? I can't find it very easily searching.

I'm rather new to Linux. How do I do this?

I'm getting a weird issue related to my screen having issues with a certain display mode. It assumes the resolution is in 50hz interlaced. I've tried using xrandr -s 0, as well as nvidia metamode settings to reset it, but it doesn't seem to work. I also tried forcing it in xorg.conf, but that didn't do anything different. I get to my DM just fine, but booting into a DE at all just puts my monitor in this loop of turning on and off on a black screen.

Whenever I use sudo-apt or whatever, I'm always asked for my password. How do I change it so it doesn't ask for my password?
>>
>>56219124
add the program you want to sudoers
>>
>>56219124
same thing for uninstalling stuff with the software manager
>>
>>56219040
nvm fixed it ;)

It was an issue with my DE forcing display settings that apparently had higher priority over other settings.

E: Could not open lock file /var/liv/dpkg/lock - open 13: Permission denied
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/) are you root?

How do I fix this? I'm trying to install stuff with apt-get

Do you think the USB is the problem?

Anybody running the 4.7 kernel in Manjaro KDE having chromium lock up after coming back from your screen turning off and the lock screen coming up? It would become totally unresponsive where I would have to kill 9 it

I was running this kernel and having this issue Ive switched back to the LTS recommended one (4.4.17-1) and it seems that it may have fixed it...
>>
>>56219732
Depends, have you tried installing from a different USB?

searx is the only one I know of which provides source code, doesn't mean that the servers run the same code, but well. there are also TOR services, check their github
