Oh what the FUCK: Tyll removed my headphones from wall of fame! Bass extension my ass. I'll shove something up his if they aren't back by noon. Ever since his transformation to an overgrown dwarven druid he's been eager to cast garbage articles about everything new and trendy in audiophool town. Probably studies stars to know what to shill next after readying another bullshit article about square waves to cover "response" issue and reap credibility from his herd. Microphone is a must.
Also need volume control (should work with Lumia 950) and playback control (play/pause, would be awesome if it had next/previous, too).

Currently use Apple's EarPods. Contrary to everybody else, I find them quite comfortable. They fit in my ear perfectly and rarely ever slip out.

Only downside is that the volume control does not work with anything else than Apple's stuff, and I need to control volume on my Lumia 950.

I also use Sony's MDR-7506 at home, enjoy how it sounds.

Somewhat unrelated but people here might have experience with this.

I'm not that into audio. I have pic related. I want to listen to audio from two computer monitors at the same time with one pair of headphones. Could I just grab a cable that splits the audio into left and right channels, plug it into the monitor headphone jacks, and have the signals sent through the mixer line ins? yo /g/
I recently got a AKG K501 from my uncle for free yeeey (pic related but not mine)

I have 2 output sources which can make it go loud enough(laptop on board sound and sansa clip+)
Other sources (mp3 players, laptops,PC with realtek dac) cant drive it up to normal sound levels.

It only sounds good on classical music, any other genre sounds crap.

Ive lurked around the web and it seems the AKG's are specially hard o power.

Even know the players I have power it up to loud enough levels,is there benefit to buying an amps for this?
It sounds so tinny? even though it gets alot of praise on the internet

Sorry for bad English btw
>>
>>56201663
Yeah you'll want an amp for those, those old AKGs benefit from amps with at least 7-10 volts of swing. Get a Fiio E10k, Magni 2, or O2.
>>
>>56201663
Try an EQ to beat it into line. I presume you are having treble issues, cut at 2 and 6 kHz. Add more bass, and keep adding until you like it.

Either, I had a past of closed cans so I am more inclined for open earphones.
>Comfort level
Very comfy(I wear classes comfy)
>Preferred tonal balance
Nice bass and treble, not too high mids but good soundstage.
>Past headphones
Koss UR-40 and Koss porta pro.
Both current and last gen Sony XB headphones. Solo 2 headphones. I gave the beats solo 2 away because it felt like a head clamp.

I think i am more inclined to the Audio Technica headphones because two weeks ago I helped setup a stage for a weekend concert. One of the dj's used the m50x and asked after the show how he liked them, he abided by them.

Really it's comparing apples to oranges but between the HD558 and the M50x, which are better for general listening to EDM, Jazz and instrumental music that is also comfy?

Except...he does.
>>
>>56202218
>I find these stats.(the voltage stuff)
For the amplifier, these will be hopefully listed on the spec sheet.
For the headphone, a little explanation.

Saying you *need* to have a dedicated headphone amplifier for a headphone is kinda bullshit, excluding electrostatics.
The amount the voltage you need of course depends on the sensitivity of the headphone, but also on music material and how loud you want it. Having more voltage on hand to make the headphone play louder doesn't hurt, but it doesn't help either.

>>56201969
>at least 7-10 volts of swing
>Fiio E10k
Only by Vp-p. That requires more computation to get to conventional Vpk and Vrms measurements. Normally, the consumer is in interested Vrms, and by root mean square the E10k is far short of 7 volts.

Skullcandy Hesh 2.0. I've used them for the last three years, but the right ear of the headphones are going out and causing sounds to be unbearable as the sound in the right ear turns on and off quickly. While I was okay with them, I'd like to get something stronger and better now.

I've done a little research myself and ran into the Sennheiser HD 598 headphones and a Fiio E10K for my DAC, but I'm not familiar with the Sennheiser brand or the use of DACs in general. Would this be a good set up to use? Should I consider switching out the DAC for another one? Anything else I should consider doing or purchasing?
>>
>>56205118
Generally it is suggested to hold off buying a DAC until you know you need one. Depending on your source you may not.
>>

>>
>>56205118
At the $200 bracket, you should also consider getting a DT880, K702, or a used Fidelio X2. Pair the first two with an amp.

Or you can just save a bit more and get a used HD600 for ~$260 and reach end game.

Those are options you can also consider
>>
>>56205196
I see. I'll either be plugging it in to the headphone port of my desktop computer or into the Logitech X540 speakers headphone port, but it makes sense to try it first before buying one.

Yes. Not too hard to drive, will last you years, and sounds good with basically all genres. Much better investment than a 598. Just wait a bit and save like $100 more and get something nicer.

AKG K612 + E10K should cost less than 200$. It's basically the best setup your budget can buy. K612 are super comfy, really light, they have large earpads for long listening sessions and they have one of the best performance/price ratio you can possibly find nowadays.
If you wanthe Sennheiser at all cost, I suggest a HD558. It's cheaper and more comfortable than HD598 and it can be modded into a HD558 easily.

HD 600 more likely. Response of your HD 558 can vary depending on the device you use. This might shift the response to a more warm tilted one which resembles the HD 650 more than the HD 600. They are all very similar and this "issue" with tonality is nothing EQ can't fix.

The sound is incredible. Regular jack included.

Only bad thing about them is the finicky bluetooth controls. Sluggish at times if not downright unresponsive.

AudioFool here - I listen to Hi-Res and balanced headphones thru an Oppo HA-1. My reference has always been BD DT-770 (80 ohms), but I found a new contender. Audio-Technica's ATH-MSR7's F'n Rock! They're so sensitive I have to turn the volume down, yet they still reveal all these hidden gems in music I thought I knew. Listening to mp3s on a clip+ thru these is almost as good as my $5k system. Highly recommended - try 'em, U'll like 'em!

Viper4Android is system wide. The Convolver can make almost any adjustment possible, but this requires more setup than your typical EQ. A guide for the uninitiated is here:
The rest of the default suite is more limited in equalization. Requires root.

Neutron Music Player has a nice parametric built in, Onkyo HF player has one built in as well. Technically, the Neutron player has the better EQ.

>My task over the last couple of weeks has been to run and tweak the tests I've been slowly configuring on NwAvGuy's O2 headphone amp, and compare my measurements with his measurements with the hope that they match fairly well. If you've not heard of the O2 amplifier, it is NwAvGuy's attempt to design a very inexpensive amp that performs very well and can be built by DIYers. My experience with this amp so far is that it's very clean sounding, and does indeed measure very well.

LG QuadBeat 3 sounds AMAZING.

Fairly flat midrange and treble with a hefty sub-bass boost and very little mid-bass / lower midrange bleed.

if your headphone's cables are not plated in pure gold the electron flow will be impeded by tiny quantum distortions in the time space continuum that prevent the ionization of the respective particles that allow the movement of high fidelity electrons meaning the less preferred low fidelity electrons which lack certain quark configurations will transpose across the cable preventing certain frequency response

I went ahead and read a review of some tube amplifier out of pure curiosity

The writer went on about how that amplifier really makes his HD650s sing and prefers it over the o2's ''analytical'' sound

Assuming the o2 is ''audibly transparent'' then the tube amplifier must be coloring the sound. What is the point of that shit and wouldn't it make the amplifier objectively inferior?

I go through a set of cheap ear buds or IEM about 2/4 times a year. It is always due to water damage from rain, or physical wear and tear damage to the cable. Most of the time, one of the two channels die, and I'm left with just one side working. And then I replace the item when both channels are fucked. My question is - referring to build quality - what aspect is most important to take care of with portable in-ear headphones? The cable, the connector, or the earpiece? I intuitively presume it's the cable. I live in a rainy country, and listen to my music and audio lectures and stuff outside. I want as much protection from the rain as possible. Also, protection from wear and tear damage, bending the cable. When considering a new purchase, the build quality is important to me. But is the cable housing more important than how the 3.5mm connector or earpiece, in terms of protection from damage?
>>
>>56213458
Cross out HD598 because it doesn't pair well with receivers because of impedance related issues, cross out K701 because it's an inconsistent headphone. M50x is decent but overrated and the DT880 PRO is better.

Get the DT880 PRO.
>>
>>56213458
HD 558 gets closest to a neutral response out of that lot and it's easy to drive. Works without an amplifier and is very comfy for most people. With that AT700 you likely have an output with high output impedance which will make the HD 558s sound boomy instead of neutral.

DT880 has a slight V-shape but mostly it just has a well extended response with a single prominent high treble peak. Some find it piercing. The higher impedance versions of this headphone likely need an amplifier. DT880s are large and almost universally comfortable.

K701 is somewhat more colored. It has a high treble peak and another broader peak around 2 KHz as well as a slight upper bass hump, all of which are audible. Due to the peaks in this region the overall sound is bass light and maybe a little harsh. K701 has a stupid head band design with bumps and most find them uncomfortable due to it.

M50X is quite different from these others and the most colored headphone out of the lot. It's a closed back headphone with a significant bass boost. Overall it has a bassy response but there are some peaks in the upper range of the response. I personally dislike them and the response is hard to EQ. Some find its clamp uncomfortable as well as the headband which in my case touched only the very top of my head leaving it sore in prolonged use.

The boominess caused by high output impedance on the HD 558, the treble peak of DT880 and the coloration of K701 are relatively easy to fix with a parametric equalizer. M50X is a bigger challenge and I'd rule that out first. Instead of K701 you should consider K702 which doesn't have the bumpy headband design.

My personal choice would be between HD 558 and DT880. Since I would be using an equalizer, I'd likely pick the DT880 and tone the treble down.

>>
>>56211616
First off there are plenty of biases that come into play when merely doing a sighted listening test of a piece of audio gear. I wouldn't trust a word someone writes about a supposed sound signature of an amplifier.

There is a very common misconception that tubes sound warm or color the sound audibly. While there definitely are amplifiers which color the sound, these can be both solid state or tube designs and warmth/brightness or whatever else someone might use to describe how an amp sounds aren't inherent to either one of these designs. I'm doubtful there's any perceivable difference at all between most well designed solid state and tube amplifiers. What someone think they hear while listening to them isn't interesting to me.

I'm sure you could design an amplifier and make it intentionally slightly bright by frequency response(enough to be audible in A/B switching) while keeping distortion and noise levels inaudible. Write a fancy product description, apply a huge price tag and build an image around that product describing it's sound as warm and lush. I wouldn't be surprised if the consensus among the reviewers is just what the packaging claims.

>What is the point of that shit
That's what some people want, a colored sound. Why they go out and spend money on a piece of gear that essentially colors everything passing through, acts as an arbitrary signal processor which you have no control over, I don't know.
>and wouldn't it make the amplifier objectively inferior?
It certainly performs worse. That doesn't make it subjectively worse which is something a lot of people put more value on.

>>56215205
HD 650 vs HD 800 is an apples to oranges comparison. Neither is strictly better or worse. They sound different.
>>
>>56215231
>HD 650 vs HD 800 is an apples to oranges comparison
Thats not what I meant. I was asking if there are equal alternative in the HD650s price range or if its still some sort of a no-brainer because it provide the least altered sound at that price range.
>>
>>56215205
Yeah a better alternative of HD650 is HD600. I own both HD600 and HD800 and >>56215231 is 100% correct about apples vs oranges. HD800 to me doesn't satisfy my forward vocal needs like on the HD600.
>>
>>56215256
HD 600

Some would probably list DT880, K702, X2 etc. These come and go, people's tastes vary. I personally see the HD 600 as the best out of the lot and if you want a more neutral response, HD 600 is a better option than HD 650 which is a bit warm.
>>
>>56215287
I own HD 650 and HD 800 and use equalizer with both so the differences grow smaller. HD 800 is more comfortable and better built. HD 650 doesn't really see any use anymore. Imo HD 600 sounds better than both if using EQ is out.

What's your major gripe with them, anon?
I found they don't sound bad, but the comfort is complete aids.
>>
>>56213380
Im running the same set-up as you lol.

The 598s are ez to power, so if your DAC truly is shit, just get any cheap Fiio DAC. They all sound fine.

For your BM800, I'll assume you got meme'd like a lot of csg and was told to buy the SOMAKE.
All you need for the bm to sound good is phantom power. There are plenty of ~20 usd full 48 volt ones on ebay. Otherwise you'd be looking into a second hand audio interface.

Gave a pair of Sennheiser HD 558's a listen to today(and they sound nice). I want to get them, but is there any heads up things that I should know about them before purchase?
>>
>>56220684
they've got a wonky impedance curve so it doesn't pair well with some devices
>>
>>56220665
They're super cheap.
>>
>>56220732
But they are good. Comfy and has some bass, which will be good for electronic and rock

If you want another option, you can always get M100s with XL pads. Closed, comfy, V shaped, portable. But I think 770 is better for home use. Or NAD HP50 - not sure about its comfort though

Iem is preferred
Comfortable enough to listen to for hours
Tonal balance preference is balanced, extra with is fine but I hate harsh highs

My past headphones is those 10 dollar panasonics. Thanks.

if i want to broaden my headphone collection what should i buy

already had dt880 pro's (250ohm), and currently own hd650's. i have bowers&wilkins p7's for phone usage but gave those to my mother, even though i love em

anyway, what to get or look at?

HTC M8 stock (I think they were made using beats tech. Not sure though. To me they sound far better than other IEM's I've tried.)

Generic Sony MDRs and Stock HTC M8 ones which I believe HTC branded beats. There was a time when HTC and HP had the license to sell beats tech.

they sound good for a $40 headphone. they don't sound good for a $70+ headphone and the problems are obvious. it's more than worth it to just step up to a 558 or buy a v6.
>>
>>56218922
probably because more people have them now. unfortunately for many, they don't have experience with other higher-end headphones because the hd600 has been shilled as end-game to them, so they will take up that position as well and call it a day.
>>
>>56219519
OG meme from when people didn't really look at measurements and treble spikes were not only acceptable but downright popular. that generation seems to have had a fondness for wonky FR and mods that slightly change it. same reason there are still ultrasone fanboys.

impedance swing like the 598 so you will want an amp with low output impedance, a cheap fiio will do. also look into the foam mod, turns the 558 into the 598.

>any technical audio improvement you can't actually hear but you still want to pay for.

>>56221526
very little is an outright upgrade. you'll want to analyze what it lacking in the hd600 and look for specific improvements there. many people go electrostatic/planar because they tend to have exceptionally even response in areas where dynamics, especially open ones, are lacking. I would not suggest the hd800, though they're definitely worth a try.

meelectronics m6 pro

>>56222183
I would say piston 3 but they have very low isolation which makes them almost open sounding. ttpod t1-e if you want isolation.

they all isolate well, se215 probably the best of the bunch. be aware the 215 and ma750 are significantly bass boosted.

Your normal microphones plug in like normal headphones.

Something like this with a XLR to 2.5mm plug.

They are great and I fucking love them, you'd have to pry them out of my cold dead hands.

However, I wouldn't go as far as calling them master race. They need tighter base man. It is a tiny bit sloppy, became immediately obvious to me when I got my hands on a pair of MSR7s.

The velour pads are a little bit of an eye sore when they pick up lint so I stuck a pair of HM5 sheep skin leather pads that were meant for the MSR7 (butchers MSR7's sound signature).

I like this simple mod so far, sub bass sounds more prominent, I don't perceive any difference with the mids and highs, and the sound stage still sounds pretty damn large. (pads smell nice too)

Took a good while to stretch the pads but they hold in place surprisingly well. Was worried I'd feel the pins sticking out and have to trim them but the pads are more than thick enough not to notice.

A planar equivalent of these would be fucking perfect.
