So how good are the TOMOKO-chans?

Also looks like the one you linked got (((Blue))) switches from an unknown source instead of (((Brown))) switches from an unknown source.
>>
Please help me guys... First 60%. HHKBP2 or Pok3r rgb blues
>>
>>56184884
Well if you want the meme board and money isn't an issue get a HHKBP2, otherwise Pok3r rgb is fine too

Cherry Brown or Clear

Doesn't matter. Might as well get used to ANSI.

Regular rubber band keyboards, all low quality.

>>
>>56184882
well the keys are switch master and they don't make them in brown just blue, red, and black
>>
>>56184329
How much does that WhiteFox kit go for on Massdrop usually? Wouldn't be surprised if InputClub tried to overcharge for an un-assembled keyboard. Don't know if I want to hold out for the next drop or not.
>>
>>56184984
180 for the base kit with no caps and switches, but 230 if you want it fully assembled
>>
>>56185022
Jesus! I know it's niche and all but what the fuck man. At most I was willing to do up to $150, key caps included.

Now I just want to get in on the fabbing. I will limit works of micro art to a run of just 5 per artisan. I will also wear only ascots and cardigans ironically.
>>
>>56185374
I love my IBM model m . But I'll draw it on with a fuckin' sharpie before I buy a keycap.
>>
>>56185434
well an injection molding machine can be bought for around $10,000 on ebay, but those are only for blank caps, if you want the skulls pay 10 times the price
>>
>>56185511

If you think that's the only way to make a keycap, you are just feeding in to the meme.
>>
>>56185559
lol 3D printed caps suck
>>
>>56185596

Who the fuck said 3d printed?

Injection molding is just for mass production, 10,000 dollars for one is just insulting that you would even say that.

You can make your own injection molding machine out of junkyard parts for MAYBE a couple of hundred dollars.

Now I'm pissed off enough I just want to flood the market with knock off "artisans" just to crash your faggotry.
>>
>>56185663
you know someone else is already doing that we discussed this in an older thread, but basically this guy http://www.k3kc.com/shop/ started coping other people designs and selling them for 20-40 bucks. This caused all the people over at geek-hack to get butt hurt and they started to ban anyone who recommended him

Charging hundreds of dollars for one is just taking advantage of autistic people.
>>
>>56185869
believe me there was a whole discussion about it and the general consensus was that what he's doing is wrong, but those $1500 keycaps aren't sold by the creator, they are all resales by people who horde them all to inflate prices so it doesn't harm anyone except for those assholes

it would be too good if some chinese company flooded the market with 1:1 copies of clack's shit down the C mark he puts inside them

The sad thing is I don't think the prices will go down, instead those autists will say that these genuine keys have superior quality and as such justify the high price

I wouldn't be surprised if they started banning people suspected of buying chinese copies of artisan caps.

Honestly, I'm surprised they didn't throw a fit when the chinese started making clones of cherry switches.
>>
>>56186245
You know its funny some guy on GH was selling a $100 keyboard for double the price and when asked him to lower it down to a reasonable amount he said that since he takes good care of his keyboards they are worth double of what they normally are.

I honestly can't wait until everything comes crashing down on them

it's so very subjective.
i'm using my faux industrial model m right now.

the absolute best quality under $200 mx board is filco, provided you replace the keycaps.
the best topre is the HHKB silenced, something about being plastic mounted makes topre better than plate mounted.

The actuation point usually doesn't require you to bottom out the key with a lot of mech switches, which can improve your efficiency once you get used to it.
Also won't wear out as quickly as a rubber dome keyboard, some of which can start feeling worse after a couple years.

It's up to you to decide if it's what you like, of course. Just trying to help
>>
>>56186668
No, you'll literally never see one in a thrift store.
People know the value of 80s and 90s mechanical keyboards so they scalp them before they even hit the store shelves and sell them off to resellers on ebay who mark them up to sell to autists like you.

the non-clicky mx switches can be quiet as long as you aren't hammering the keyboard.

I have browns and I've used reds and both are quiet enough. All cherry mx switches will sound the same regardless of the keyboard (but not all switch varieties sound the same)

I got rid of the light from the layers led, it got slightly annoying! If you get it, back tic and squiggle are shift ESC then fn, not fn then slift ESC like the poker 2.

I made a custom 60% and I have my arrow keys on the second layer. Basically, press FN and then [ for up, ; for left, ' for down, and \ for right. It feels very natural for me. Home and End are P and ] respectively with O and L for Pg Up and Pg Dn.

I don't have any completed pictures of it but here's one before I finished it. Just imagine that everything outside of the red box doesn't exist (and that it has two extra mod keys in-between both controls and alts). Right alt is my FN key

What's the appeal of 40% keyboards? Do you never use numbers?
>>
Hey, this is the first time I notice this general, please don't bully my retarded questions or my english;
I'm an autist with unnecesary PC sounds, like the constant fan humming, or the click clacks of keyboards/mouse, to the point I always modify the switch of my keyboard whenever I buy a new one so it makes slightly less noise. I think it all started when the coworker I had right next to me on a data entry company bought a mechanical keyboard.
Since then I visited a few 'geek' websites about the advantages of a mk and literally all the pros where something like "it just feels good", "you get feedback with the clack of each key!", "muh nostalgia"
Am I missing something? My 10 years old membrane keyboard with quality plastic has never failed me yet.

The appeal of mechanical keyboards is how they feel to use and the high level of modularity. That's about it.

it's compact but you still have the dedicated keys you need and the function keys sit close to the num row so you can reach them easily and bind keys/macros to them

They're meme gayymer keyboards, good at marketing to that audience, but for the price you can do so much better.

If you want clicky with tactile feedback, get blues, if you want quiet and no tactile feedback, get reds.

I'd bet you'll like whatever you end up getting, because you don't have anything to benchmark it against, so it's really hard to go wrong with your first mech board.

Feel nice with gateron clears and cherry clears, very same o-rings didn't feel nice at all with gateron blacks.

They do a fairly good job at silencing the downstroke, and even dampening the upstroke a bit since they make the keycaps resonate less.

And no, they don't feel like rubber domes. They feel like you're punching rubber, but not like a collapsing rubber dome.

I can't give you specifics since I pretty much winged it but the first pic I posted was what I started with after I stripped the plastic casing off. I made some measurements for the case I was going to make later and I desoldered all of the switches from the board. After I stripped the steel plate I took a dremel to it and cut off the top and side and trimmed up the other side and bottom. I also cut out some holes for the two extra buttons I added on the bottom row. I sanded and painted it since the black paint was bubbling and rusting. At this point, I took the cad file that I was going to use originally (instead of reusing the plate) and used that to get a wooden case laser cut. The case was supposed to be the same size as the plate and I was going to mount it using the four screws in the corner.

Obviously I fucked the scale up. On the bright side, with the coupon, the case came out to like $8 anyway and I'm still super happy with it. I handwired my key matrix instead of reusing and tracing the PCB (more on that later, google brownfox for instructions on handwiring) and hooked it up a teensy running custom TMK firmware. I mounted the plate to the case using four machine screws on the bottom attaching to brass nuts that I soldered to the PCB hooks on the plate. In the end, I think this works better since there is ZERO flex and by design, it can't flex unlike if I had it floating from the four corners. The picture is of the numberpad (which I never bothered wiring) which is mounted the same way. The only difference is that it uses two stainless nuts instead of four brass that are JB Welded instead of soldered.

cont'd

And that's pretty much it. I have one function layer (as you can see by the labels on my key caps) but I think I can do up to ten, assuming I had the buttons. The firmware is amazing and very customizable (my WASD is set up to emulate mouse input) and it is very easy to mod my setup and reflash it (except that the compiler doesn't work on windows 10). I have my matrix set up and my teensy programmed so that I may addon the numberpad if I ever get around to wiring it but I honestly don't use it enough and I might just give it it's own microcontroller anyway.

After having to take it apart a couple times and resolder some buttons, I hot glued in every single key switch. It is significantly more sturdy and it's been going 6+ months without any issues. I did fuckup some of my key caps, like I said, when I was soldering the nuts to the plate. I wasn't paying attention to my exhaust heat and I left some of the switches (with the caps) mounted like an idiot.

Price breakdown
$1 - keyboard at a yardsale, worked great until my roommate's dog and I accidentally spilled a glass of water. I lost a couple of switches (and probably worsened the rust on the plate) due to what I assume is corrosion. Also, this thing had a track ball instead of directional keys and the track ball didn't work for shit (old and worn I guess) and the mouse keys were RIGHT under the left ctrl and alt buttons AND wired into the key matrix so if you accidentally rested your hand and actuated the buttons (despite the serial mouse not being plugged in) you would trip up the controller.
$21 - teensy 2.0 (plus shipping)
$8 - custom lasered wood case
<$5 misc electronics for wiring (diodes, cable, usb ports)

This thing seriously cost me around $36. I bought a dell quietkey with alps just to harvest the keycaps as well but I have yet to swap them over.

I already had a ton of cutoff wheels, a dremel, a soldering iron, sandpaper, spray paint, etc.

Linear switches feel the same as my rubber dome keyboard. Blacks are somewhat tolerable since they require more force to press. If you want you can try and get some funky key switches like space invader or futaba switches. If you want the ultimate in clicky you can get some omron amber switches.

tl;dr I cut out the plate and reused it along with the keycaps and switches and then treated the rest like 100% custom build. I threw out the PCB (and hand-wired it), the case, and the original controller. I would have reused the cord except that I was converting it from DIN-5 to USB and I didn't want an extra serial plug for the mouse hanging off.

Also my keyboard was BROKEN when I did this. Don't do this to a perfectly working keyboard.

Rubber domes aren't linear by design, so if you say that it sounds similar, it sounds like it has either been quite heavily used and worn out, or you have a strange concept of similarity.

True, but I only said that because I like my FN layer setup. I have my arrow keys on the right (instead of WASD) and with an ANSI enter, I wouldn't be able to use them one handed. I also type only with two fingers on each hand when I don't concentrate on typing so that may have something to do with it.

just ordered a corsair k70 rgb rapidfire - how bad did I fucked up?

I dont really have a budget, just want a decent upgrade for my razor blackwiddow ultimate ( its not hard I know) - and it has to be a keyboard with rgb backlights and a good build quality. Any other suggestions or is the corsair k70 rgb rapidfire a good pick?

Eh.

It's a very nice keyboard, but not the best.

If you get Hasu's controller to make it fully programmable and a PBT spacebar it's about as good as you can get without building your own keyboard.

Though Topre is also a matter of preference.

you can actually get non exclusive CC keys for cheaper then what he sells them for, but what happens is people buy all the exclusive ones then resale them for 10 times the price. So he copies them and sells them for cheap. No way he can end the monopoly on them. It just pisses people off that limited run designs are being copied which I understand, however it's the not scalpers that I hate the most its the people who actually buy them and enable these fucks is what really pisses me off.
Honestly if people were buying them for 60-80 bucks I'd say this guy is a tool and should fuck off, but when they buy them for $1000+ I can't get mad if they go for him

KBParadise V80 with Matias Quiet Click switches and Dolch keycaps. Pic related.

Unfortunately I was only able to pre-order with an expected delivery date of October, but I'm willing to wait for the right product.

Going to drop it in one of the TEX TKL aluminum cases. Probably grey or black.

>>
>>56200150

I've been using a Logitech K360 wireless keyboard for something like four years now.

I'm sick of cheap, chintzy bullshit and at the point where I just like buying things once and being done with it. I don't have a fancy high paying job or anything, but "buy once, cry once" I've learned is just a better way of doing things.

If it shows up and I hate it, I can always return it, but I think this will be the last keyboard I buy for 10+ years.

>>56200543
you probably do not want browns
its a similar feel to reds and actually my 3-4 year old ducky shine 2 w/ browns doesnt even have the tactile bump at this point it literally feels like a linear switch at normal typing speeds
If you can tolerate low noise(clicks but not loud clicks) MX whites are probably the best option
if you must have silence clears are the next best option
theyre quite heavy but theyre progressive so at actuation theyre not necessarily massively heavy but I don't think there's a heavier switch at bottom out which may cause some discomfort if you're not quite ready for it or if you bottom out like no ones business

i was just wondering if you're supposed to type completely without bottoming out or with some bottoming out or always bottoming out. i'm on rubber domes for now so i'm always bottoming out because that's how the keyboard works. do you think a mech keyboard with blue will help me type faster? i've seen people say they gained 10 wpm just from the keyboard

>>
>>56200954
not kidding i did a trashy statistics project on wpm correlated to keyboards
you probably won't type any faster to begin with maybe after a month or two you might notice possible increase in speed
from an ergonomics and longevity(most important) not bottoming out all the time is the goal
obviously its not possible to be perfect about it but attempt to not bottom out as much as possible, you'll probably start doing it once you start getting used to the keyboard
the keyboard i am most comfortable w/ i do type the fastest tho(hhkb)

i'm 6 feet tall and i'm getting a compact keyboard because the bulkiness of my current keyboard has been bothering me a lot, the reason the numpad is on the right is because the layout was decided before the computer mouse was invented/popularized. a numpad on the left would make more sense for right-handed users so it doesn't get in the way of the computer mouse, but even then you can use layers to get numpad without taking your hands off the main typing area
