Razer BlackWidow Chroma (my roommate is getting pissed cause it's loud, do i even get another mechanical? or just get regular? plz halp)
Can someone suggest a nice smooth set of key caps in white. These tai-hao's are shit, getting a refund.
>>56153355
non clicky switches can be near silent if you don't bottom out or even if you dont mash the keys like a savage baboon
on what keyboard to suggest is beyond me tho anon ill let someone else help you with that one
any anons know of a 60% keyboard with mx grays(linear or tactile idc)? or am i dreaming

or you can just get some cheapy rubber o-rings to put under if you cant not bottom out and it reduces sound quit a bit, i use them on browns and also find it makes the switches feel a little more solid and less grainy

CM novatouch with 55g domes. When you lube a novatouch it's way better than a realforce, no silencing required at all.

God that is a beautiful keyboard. It just has this unadulterated purity to it. Those OG Cherry Doubleshots no doubt are responsible for that. Winkeyless as well. It also uses the pencil holder case which is both aesthetically pleasing and functional if you ever use a pencil. Probably made in the early 90s and it blows 90% of keyboards you can get today out of the water in terms of looks and keyfeel (vintage MX). What our piece of tech from the 90s can still do that?
If that keyboard came up in the GH or reddit classifieds it would sell for $400 easy, maybe more. Not a whole lot of those early great cherry boards are left.
>>56156235
takes about 3 hours, 2 hours if you know what you're doing. It's not hard, just tedious.
>>56156159
I lube the rails, and the actual stem, Ive been lubing topre switches for years now, and that combo is the best IMO. I also take apart the stabilizer and lube that too. I'm telling you right now, the novatouch key travel already feels kind of short, the landing pads are going to ruin that topre feeling. If you lube it, its already going to be pretty quiet. Unless you don't mind having a linear feeling topre board, do not go with rings or landing pads, just lube it. The keyset is the EnjoyPBT set from shadovved on GH.

Logitech K200 (I like it, does what it does)
Time for some PCB design
Tempted to cop the keyboard in the op bit it's nonstandard so I won't be able to use keycap sets which bugs me
What are some mod-friendly, classically shaped and laid out tenkeylesses with either cherry or gateron switches? I'm not gonna solder leds onto the PCB or replace switch bodies or anything like that, but I'd like to be able to order some PBT caps in the future without having to file down every other key or hunt for custom stabilizers.
>>56157126
Replacing keycap on the keyboard is hardly a "mod". And you can get any tkl with standard layout and it'll be fine.
Friendly with mod however, I recommended Filco tkl. They've been on the market for a long time and there are many mod that you can do on it.
Should I get a nova touch or a hhkb?

>>56159529
The case is flimsy, the bottom row is beyond non-standard (though the PCB would allow for a standard configuration) and the metal plate is also thin as shit, giving the whole thing some flex and the spacebar rattles like all hell.
Don't get me wrong, it's not a terrible keyboard that will break down on you in no time or something of the sort, but you can do better than this thing for the money. Every other keyboard I own has better build quality than this thing, and one of those is a 50 bucks chinkboard.
I've got gateron blacks and some PBT caps (except for the bottom row) on it now, and it's quite a decent typing experience, but I'd still not recommend it unless you absolutely want the layout and you're willing to spend a stupid amount of money on compatible keycaps.

>>56159613
but I want brown switches
>>56159663
all I can find in my area is quickfire rapid-i, is it the same?
>>56159712
iirc, it's not from the same OEM that makes the quickfire rapid (Costar), so the build quality may not be as good, but it's certainly better than the quickfire TK just for the fact that it has a standard bottom row.
>>56159712
I've heard the rapid-i's LEDs have a high tendency to burn out.
>>56159727
>just for the fact that it has a standard bottom row.
so just because of the layout? or is there more to it?
>>56159952
Well, looking at the picture you posted, it probably wouldn't be too far fetched to assume that the quickfire rapid has a more solid build quality than the TK, probably with a fatter metal plate.
Though that's just speculation on my part, I don't have a quickfire rapid, so I can't really tell you what differences there are except for the fact that the quickfire rapid has a standard layout, which is already more than enough of a reason to choose it over the quickfire TK.
>>56153962
is it avaible in grey or did you paint it?
(and how did you paint it)
Do Ducky Shine 5's come in Clear or Green switches? Which is more similar to blue switches?
>>56159994
meh I didn't actually want to post that pic, I forgot I uploaded it
rapid is not available here, only rapid-i so it's that vs TK
and the leds on rapid-i burn out apparently so fuck that
>>56160170
Greens are more similar to blues. The Ducky Shine 5 doesn't come with either of the switches you inquired about. The Shine 4 comes with clears and greens, though last I checked it was sold out everywhere.
Though I am looking to sell my Shine 4 with clears if you're interested.
>>56160235

is this a joke? thats where the most friction from the slider comes from
hey guys
So I fell for the meme.
I already have a Model M I keep at my desk in office, but needed badly something to replace the wireless keyboard I had previously at home.
The ISO layout will take some time to get used to, but I can already feel it's superior to ANSI IT for programming. Local layouts are good just for writing text, actually.
I know it's a cheap board, but I dintinctly rnjoy the feeling that it matches with the mouse - similar texture and distinct clicks.
Why you no love mouse more, /mkg/?
>>56163943

>>56163943
Awww yeah, QC. Can't really complain for 37euro
So one of the switches (the e) won't fully depress on occasion, runing both the tactile and sound feedback. The easiest way to fix it? Should I lube it somehow, exchange it with another switch from the board, or will it just go away with use?
>>56164121

Hey guys, I just bought a model m, and it's my first mechanical keyboard. My mobo has this combo ps2 port, but the model m isn't even getting power from it... Could it be the keyboard is faulty or something else? I say its not getting power because none of the lock lights are working.
>>56165058

Excuse the shitty camera, I bought this for $110 and it came with mx blues. It's really fun to type and I wish the macros had some software to make thinks a bit easier.
So I guess for my first mechanical keyboard how did I do?
>>56167923

How bad is it to go from regular rubber membrane keyboard to a mechanical keyboard with (Cherry) red switches? I heard they're really bad for typing / prone to mistakes, etc.
I would love to try out and buy a mechanical keyboard but here in third worldia they basically sell only "gaymer" keyboards with red switches and even the normal looking ones have red switches.
cut up my K90 a few days ago because I got tired of the G keys. think it came out alright.
>>56167980
Don't worry about it it doesn't feel bad, but getting something with tactile feedback is nice, linear switches are fine too
>>56167969
Better than most other first mechanical keyboards. My first was a Das Kayboard 3 with MX Browns and a non-standard bottom row.
>>56167980
I unironically believe that MX Reds offer a worse typing experience than membrane keyboards.
>>56167994
just googled some images of this board and those macro keys are ugly. What were they thinking
this seemed to be pretty much THE keyboard that i desire, but now i'm kinda starting to have second thoughts (mainly concerned about its authenticity and input lag marketing claims). do you see any potential problem with buying this (with noppoo/gaote blue switches):
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Noppoo-backlighting-Technology-Programmable-Mechanical/dp/B0091QHIR2
>i do A LOT of programming. programming productivity is my main concern.
>keyboard must be compact, ideally not wider than one extra column of keys to the right
>prefer RGB backlighting with adjustible brightness and individually programmable keys (choc mini rgb has this)
>prefer macro keys on the left, but can do without them especially if the function keys sit close to the typing area like this
>i really like this layout, compact but with dedicated arrow keys, cuddled function keys, great "numpad" support, comfy pgup/pgdn
>want the lowest input lag possible, preferably with 1 kHz USB polling but i guess you can only get that with "gaymen" keyboards
i'm coming from a microsoft reclusa with a swedish layout. there aren't many options with a swedish/nordic layout but i think this US ANSI-ish layout will be better and more ergonomic for programming, and almost all of my typing is in english anyway.
my main complaint about the microsoft reclusa is its size, i want a more compact keyboard so i can have the typing area centered and also have my mouse close to the typing area.
could the blue switches be an issue for someone like me who's never used a mech keyboard before? are they really so loud that they can disturb your neighbors? but i guess i want the tactile and audible click to help me type efficiently without bottoming out. the keys on microsoft reclusa are basically on/off (so i bottom out against the rubber dome) but with mech keyboards you're supposed to type without bottoming out, right?
>>56168196
the main issue with the choc mini seems to be that the keys are non-standard in size, so it's hard to customize them, but i'm fine with using the original keys. also a couple of redditors said that there's a trademark troll and the ones on amazon are of decent quality but may come from a different manufacturer, what's up with that, so the 1ms realkey technology could be complete bullshit? why isn't choc mini on noppoo's official website, has it been discontinued? did they even make a legit rgb version?
does the real noppoo claim to use low input lag technology like this?
and so would you recommend for or against the noppoo choc mini rgb? should i be looking at alternatives such as qisan/ajazz/keycool, or is the choc mini rgb the best for what i want?
>>56159323
>CTRL next to A
WHY
>>56168215
i think it's probably more ergonomic, you'll mainly use the keys above the bottom row besides the space bar, so you won't have to go "down there" with your pinky, which can be a huge problem for emacs users. the noppoo choc mini even has a hardware feature to switch ctrl and caps lock.
>>56168256 (Me)

Well ok, there's one e-shop with a Tesoro Durandal keyboard for 75 euro that's vaguely classified as "Cherry MX Brown". There are however no further specifications available. So how good quality are Tesoro mechanical keyboards? Any experience?
>>56168293
If your choices are limited why not buy from China?
Or better yet why not buy a switch tester and find out which switch is the best for you.
>>56168063
no idea, but it helped that the PCB for the macro keys are separate from the main PCB and i love this board otherwise. now i just have to cut down the palmrest.
>>56167366
There is not enough competition to have a "best value for money". It's a niche market, and all of the switches are a little different.
>>56168211 (Me)
some guy actually analyzed choc mini (different version though) and he says it's around 20 ms latency, could be even worse with a slow USB polling rate :/

ok so if the marketing claims about the input latency are bullshit, then do you guys think it could still be a decent keyboard in other aspects? it seems like all usb keyboards have some latency, except for cherry mx 6.0 which is not what i'm looking for and they're not licensing the technology to other companies.
you guys haven't noticed any major issues with input lag on your keyboards, have you? even as i type this now with my reclusa at 1 kHz usb polling it kind of feels like the text input is lagging behind my key presses. but maybe it's not a big deal during day to day use and i basically don't have a choice anyway?

>>56169796
I am 99% positive that's me. So far one of the switches has a problem resetting and according to everyone on the internet this is a common problem with cherry mx blue switches on ducky boards. I messed around with the macros and they are fun to use I wish that there was some software to make it easier. It is manageable but since I got carried away I had to reset everything and in doing so I cleared the default multimedia function macros by accident so I had to re-program them by hand.
Since this is my first mechanical keyboard I can't really say much other than I wish it had a back-light

I paid $110 for it and the key caps feel nice, but then again I've only typed on dye-sub key caps even on my rubber dome which has them they feel about the same, but it's one of the nicer rubber domes out there. I've never tried doubleshot caps before so I'm not the best on to judge them. For that price I paid I'd say yay. The metal plate is definitely sturdy, but I've seen better on some older rubber domes and I like the nice thin edges. Now compared to my IBM model M it feels worse, but I need something that is nice and small but still has a numpad. I'm defiantly happy with it

Topre a best.
The only complaint people have about Topre is that it contains rubber, which is like complaining that both Ferrari and Toyota both use rubber tires, even when the cars are vastly different and even the tires they use are vastly different (speed ratings, load ratings, actual performance).
Why don't you just move on to chiclet? Supposedly it's the future, and apparently nobody cares, so why would you.

I just purchased the Corsair Strafe RGB with Cherry Silent Switches. They are actually very nice switches! They feel smooth and have a nice touch to them. The textured keycaps and spacebar are very pleasant to the touch.

I'd really like to order from somewhere that's got cash on delivery as a payment option because I don't have a credit card (I had one but it was stolen so I never got a new one since) and if I wanted to get one I'd have to travel too far for me to bother. No why does /mkg/ hate corsair keyboards well its in the FAQs
7) Why does it seem like /g/ hates Razer and Corsair mechanical keyboards?
- Razer has changed from Cherry switches to Kailh switches without reducing the price of their products
- While using Kailh switches isn't inherently terrible, Razer have switched purely to increase their profits
- Corsair mechanical keyboards have a certain aesthetic to them which attracts a specific demographic
- Corsair boards use a non-standard layout for the 5th row. This makes buying after market keycap sets difficult
- There have been reports of quickly dying LEDs on certain Corsair models
- RGB versions of this keyboard have had numerous issues with drivers and flickering

a chinkboard has like 20 ms latency
http://www.avernus.com/~gadams/hardware/keyboard/choc-mini-analysis.html
with a more powerful processor you can scan the keys more frequently and it's not just corsair that are saying this it's cherry themselves too and cherry (ONLY cherry) have realkey technology to reduce latency from an average of 20 ms to less than 1 ms

Kalih certainly won't have higher production standards and QC than Cherry. The switches follow pretty much the same design as that of cherry switches except for the heightened actuation point, so I'd say it's probably quite fair to say that they won't be better in quality than cherry.
Now consider the fact that they kept the price the same as it was with the cherry switches. There's no reason to buy that crap.

>>56177760
i want a keyboard with low latency, 16 MHz isn't even a lot and you're scanning 100+ keys at a time

So I was wondering what you guys think of this, or the idea of an analog keyboard in general? I personally see a lot of use and potential in this, but I don't know how widespread that could get and be. Obviously, it could open up a lot of possibilities in PC gaming and provide options superior to both a normal keyboard+mouse and a controller. But what other industries can see benefit from this? Do you think it can become a standard? I mean, simply having the option of setting any key as a DInput axis or to any XInput is pretty significant, at least in gaming. For example, games, sims, and programs having to do with pic related can all find benefit from this.
>>56177749
>ducky one is also like $115+ it's in the same price range as corsair
The ones in stock right now are worth that much.

>>56177730
bullshit, the ARM teensy boards are 3 dollars more than the cheapest model they make. the choc mini is slower because it's a 5+ year old design and nobody here recommends it.

Brown switches are the best because you need to double tap to self cast in Dota 2, which is *problematic* with blue switches and you need to also type a lot to flame your teammates and you don't wanna look like a retard who makes lots of fat-fingered typos when flaming, so reds are also a no-no.
>>56177772
It's 16000000 instructions per fucking second. Let's assume you have a 10x10 matrix for easier calculations. In the program loop you disable the last scanned row and enable the next one for scanning. That's 2 operations that probably take a few times more instructions, let's generously assume 2*4 = 8. Then you check each of 10 inputs. You check if its state has changed since last scan and if it did, update and send the information. That's around 10 times (instructions for USB communication + 2). I have no idea how ATmega32U4 handles USB communication, but let's assume sending a information about one key press would cost 28 instructions. Then we have a total of 10*8 + 10*10*30 = 3080 instructions. Let's then check how many times a second we can scan the keyboard: 16000000/3080 =~ 5200, which means we scan the keyboard every ~0,20 milliseconds. To reach 1 millisecond wait time, you would need to need 16000 instructions for scanning the keyboard. I suppose the USB communication could be more complicated than I assumed (especially since keyboards usually don't send information about every single key press/release but rather packets), but I don't think it could reach 16K instructions. Even if you double my estimations (and I tried to take the higher guesses) you won't reach 16000. Maybe I'll check it when I start playing with my Arduino. I guess the delay comes either from:
>shit coding
>shit driver
>switch delay (I found figures as high as 3ms mentioned for mechanical switches, that sounds ridiculous though)
>kids that can't find a reason for being bad in vidya
Feel free to look for other explanations, but 16MHz is a lot for scanning a keyboard.
Not appreciating available computing power is the worst cancer of these times.
>good coding? nah, fuck this shit, the users should buy 16GB of RAM anyway

or
https://www.amazon.com/Storm-QuickFire-Rapid-Tenkeyless-Mechanical/dp/B007VDKLLM/
The first one isn't tenkeyless, but the second one is giving me bad bellyfeels because it's marketed as a "Gayming" keyboard. The first one is newer & straight from Cherry so it gives me good bellyfeels, plus it's available sooner (have to wait till August 26 for the QuickFire, and I'm horny now).
>>56178242
Okay, I looked through the instructions set, the highest is 5 for recalls and subroutine calls. The rest is 3 at most. Memory latency might indeed be a problem when talking about such short timespans.

Stop with all these posts its driving me insane

i will probably order the rgb version tomorrow, you lose some of the tactile feel of the raw POM caps but you gain the rgb lights and the switches seem good, judging by people's anecdotes they seem to actually prefer noppoo's switches over cherry mx and a guy on youtube tested them and he says they have a pretty consistent 55 gram actuation force

>i will probably order the rgb version tomorrow,

the capslock stem is off-off center, meaning you have to do a stem surgery to make it fit.

I have a question:
When making your own keyboard, why does something like a TKL board cost at around $35, whereas you could get something like one of those cheapo tokomo mechanicaleagle keyboards from amazon, desolder the switches and use the board inside that for around the same price?
For around the same price you also get some cheap caps and an enclosure. I mean, the PCB probably wouldn't be the highest of quality, but you get much more material and things to tinker and mod with. If you don't want to temporarily use the cheapo caps or enclosure, just toss them and use what you were gonna use originally.

Probably a combination of things:
1. Only one (or a few) people working on it.
2. Quality.
3. Enthusiats will pay more for anything.

I'm getting the SA Chocolatier keycaps from massdrop. I wanna repaint my case to match, but I'm stuck between metal flake white and and dark brown.
Thoughts?
