Centris 650 here.
Got the monitor fixed and computer running nicely with OS 8.1.

Replaced the motherboard battery with a coin cell battery holder (and battery) and also added a fan on the CPU heatsink.
Planing on ordering a 18MHz oscillator for the CPU and add a socket for it.

I'm thinking about going and have about $40 to spend (though I could do a little more), anything I should look for in particular? I have spare closet space so size really isn't an issue.

I'd get a Quadra 950 with a PPC card and NuBus video.
Probably few monitors, keyboard and mice for backup, maybe a older compact just for the kicks.

There's probably only Mac stuff, so no Apple //?

>>56159816
>do you actually know EE
I don't think you actually need a degree in EE for that.
Common sense and experience over the years will do.

Finding a computer in a dump hole full of corrosion, dirt, bringing it home and cleaning it up, properly, like full alcohol and contract cleaner routine, retro brighten it, replacing caps and other dieing or dead parts, adding a few propriate upgrades and software.

I think that's already pretty much restoring, don't you think so?
>>
>>56160413

you don't need to know EE for restoring old computers but it helps to actually know how they work. it makes you less of a retarded hipster
>>
>>56160411
They took up half the thread. Too hard to just ignore.

from what I remember, the /vr/ threads had a problem with people arguing if you used some piece of hardware like a CF floppy emulator, that it was hipster ROM kiddy emulator shit.

Retards who buy Pentium Pros at ridiculously high prices just to destroy them and "get rich because they are made out of pure gold" just make me sad.

I used AppleWin once a long time ago. It was a lot more limited than VICE in terms of configuration options and only emulated an enhanced //e. Also it would only let you use it about 15 minutes before rudely demanding you get a registered version and then exiting out.

I guess I'd hate Ebay sellers less if they didn't post stuff like "Cannot test, no power cord" or "Cannot test, no monitor" when you could just plug the goddamn thing into any TV set. And then expect you to pay $200 for it.
>>
>>56161379
Most of them just want money and have no interest in the hardware or testing it.
>>
>>56161379
I honestly just read that as "it's broken" when they could easily test it and sell it easier/get more money.
>>
>>56161422
>>56161379
some guys don't even care if it's broken because they like the challenge of fixing the thing. I don't though. If it doesn't work, be honest, you fucker.
>>
it's mostly e-celebs like AVGN that caused Ebay prices to skyrocket. any time he'd play some game, every autist wants it.
>>
>>56161225
I've found early 90s and late 80s iron at the local recycler. Usually it's in such poor condition that I'm afraid if I applied power to it I'd be greeted with a loud bang and smoke and it's not uncommon for it to be unloaded straight to eBay if it's not too expensive to ship.

That's also how I've gotten a lot of late 90s-mid 2000s RISC iron however. I've also gotten a Sun SPARCstation 20 there that likely needs a recap (some humming sound comes from the PSU area)

I'm also trying to look out for an early-mid 90s RS/6000 workstation, however it was hard enough as it is finding my Intellistation Power 275 (Power4)
>>
The thrift stores in my area banned computer stuff a long time ago. Actual computers, I mean. Peripherals and monitors are fine, although a lot of them now seem to have banned CRTs.
>>
>>56161595
Add LGR to that list too. He's pretty much the AVGN/CGR of 90s PC hardware, and there's no doubt he's caused prices of vintage computer hardware to skyrocket. Also, the existence of sites like Vogons contributes to it.

>>56161437
Sometimes it's better that you don't plug in the system and risk popping some hard to replace component. If you've ever looked at how rarer vintage computers are restored, the first step is never "plug it in and see what it does", it's usually "test the PSU out" without the original machine being connected to it, and that's before you get into complex situations like early water cooling systems.

I've heard of people trying to rewire newer PSUs to work with older systems like the Atari XL/XE, simply due to the fact that the old power supplies can not only fail but can even take out hardware in the process.
>>
>>56161180

>>56161736
The oldest one I ever saw was an Apple II+, a long, long time ago. I mean, it was literally in the 90s and I was like 9 years old. I remember tapping on the keys and pretending to type out a BASIC program (I used to play with QBASIC a lot on our PC) and some motherfucker walks past me and says "Hey, you typing a letter or something?"

That was an unnecessary bit of autism there...
>>
>>56161748
That's interesting. By the way how did you find a plain board? I can't find anything older than pentium 4 PCs let alone a PC-XT clone board.
>>
>>56161736
The oldest I saw (and actually got for free) was some 386 motherboard (AMD 386 40MHz I think) but I didn't have any GPU for it. Shame I threw it away and broke the PSU. At this point I actually would still want to find such a system. (or a Socket 7 Pentium)
>>
>>56161831
You think that's autism? This happened to me once.

>be 15

>some bald middle aged dude walks ups, squints at me, and says something like "That's from my generation."
>I just nodded and kept perusing the albums
>>
>>56161831
I've seen more Apple IIs IRL than I ever have C64s, oddly enough. There was that, I've seen IIes at least twice, a IIc once. I've seen TI-99/4As in their original box but never a C64.
>>
>>56161851
A relative got it 20 years ago for free from work and gave it to me some years ago
>>
>>56161831

>>

One time I saw an old PowerBook from the 90s in a Goodwill and some woman comes in and says oh check out that laptop I wonder how much they want for that. And I said "Nah, that shit is from like 1996 or something. You don't want something that old." and she was like "Oh ok." and walked off.

>>
>>56162227

>>

Also Privileg. This brand was owned by Quelle GmbH.
>>
>>56162734
MacSSH 68K supports SSHv2 and will run on the SE/30 if you have enough RAM (needs > 10 MB total and the SE/30 is the only compact that can support that much RAM).

I think I remember trying MacSSH before settling on NiftyTelnet, neither of them would connect to anything I had that didn't have v1 enabled.

Either way it's not too big a deal if you have a bridge box or can just turn on v1 on your host, it makes your shit vulnerable to a denial of service attack if it's outward-facing and you've pissed someone off, though.

what is it about these threads that make them turn into a lump of legendary autistic shit when regular retro tech threads are usually some of the most informative and relaxed threads on the board?

luddite "tech" hipsters don't really "use" their vintage ex-business garbage, they just take pictures of it and jack off and form internet clubs

you can't do anything on these that's worth keeping them around due to emulators doing it better, unless you are the typical piece of shit who thinks that the same flat design that's popular now "doesn't look right" on anything that isn't a 30 year old CRT monitor with scanlines. every pic itt is either of an old game (emulatable) or "ironically" browsing 4chan on some homebrew browser (hipsterism, nobody gives a fuck). That was a joke of course, some of this shit doesn't even have a web browser so they open up a screenshot of 4chan in a picture viewer to pretend it can even do that

threads always devolve into ageism, it would be actually nice to visit any forum about old tech but ageism is baked into it and most of the time that's all they cared about in the first place. By the way it's all 25 year olds pretending to be 30 so they can hate on other 25 year olds.

>informative
making up tech history isn't information, bbs and irc shits have invested decades into professionally idling and pretend that the net was better before such and such year but when asked about what made it so great they have nothing to say. it was actually shittier back then but nostalgia fixes everything because it mixes with the current reality where internet speeds aren't 2600 baud and the average workstation isn't $3K

these threads are just the same 5-10 pics over and over again, none of this stuff changes, there's no new information or new products to be released because anyone who doesn't shit on these neo-luddite threads are just living in the past.

I agree.

All old computers with external PSUs get a nice custom ATX PSU, much more reliable.

You know it's software switchable? I don't mind it sitting in the computer, specially if it's only $5, try getting one for that price.

does DSL even ship with a usable compiler? it seems like a toy than an OS, you'd probably be better off running NT and at least having a large base of full-featured software to choose from

DSL is just a normal Linux distro, probably mostly used as a toy but nonetheless can be configured for anything.
Windows NT on such a machine would be slightly overkill, just stick to DOS and Windows 9x, better driver support and faster in general.

It's a program called JPZ1228-8. You load it up, put in the file name, and it very very slowly loads and decodes the JPG. After it's done, you get dropped back out to BASIC and you can type SYS 4096 to restart and load another pic.

I did a pic of a Playboy centerfold, but it looked absolutely terrible after being resized to 320x200 (the original image was reaaaallllly tall) so I didn't keep that one.

lol you don't enjoy any of that, this is timesink shit

congrats we've found an even worse "hobby" than categorizing anime

your "minimal hardware" sucks up massive amounts of electricity as most of it probably doesn't even have acpi. If you want to pretend to be some sort of engineer, get an rpi or arduino so it is actual minimal hardware with less electricity.

doing nothing then finding some obscure old historical bullshit to pretend to use so that nothing is harder is known as "butt diddling". just admit that these threads are circlejerks already.

There was a mod to use 72-pin SIMMs in an Atari ST, but EDO RAM will not work with the ST's chipset. Unfortunately, EDO SIMMs are vastly more common than non-EDO ones.

That's the best thing I've ever heard.
I remember you could have an ad hoc network if your friends had them and you could play games and chat. None of my friends had one, though. :(

It's been my dream to build a Win98 setup for older games and refurbish a broken Apple II with modern parts just for kicks. Whatever happened to old computer design? I like this new trend of cyberpunk-ish designs, but I'd really like an 80's comeback in this regard.

So much stupidity in a single post. Please check your mail, i'm sure you won the 4chan shitpost trophy.
If you want to create the future, you need to know the past. And yes, it can be funny to do actual things on historical hardware.
If you want to pretend to be some sort of engineer, don't get a rpi or arduino. Get that one device that fits into your project.
Is there no open playground near you, where you can hang out with other kids of your age? Oh look, there is a Pokémon on the freeway, hurry.

Got a question you guys might be able to answer.

Every now and then, I'll stumble across an old piece of electronic equipment, usually a computer accessory/peripheral, that has lights that initially look like LEDs, but on closer inspection have little flickery filaments inside. What's the deal with these lights? They're clearly not the LEDs of the past two decades and they're not incandescent bulbs either.

They're neon bulbs. They were on everything in the 60s/70s.

My grandparents had small lamp that looked like a candle with one of those. They left it in the window at night because Jesus or something.

Got this today, not incredibly old but i've been trying to get something from this era for a while because i've got a ton of games i want to play on it.

PII 233mhz, 96mb of ram, 4gb HDD. Says IPC CS-1 workstation on it, but other than that i can't really find any info on it.

Curious if anyone knows more about it? Doesn't really matter in the long run, works for what i need it for.

Has some old spreadsheets on it for some company's expenses and stuff. Last one is from 2005, so it was used for quite a long time considering its vintage. Has all of the old Office software on it, Nero, bunch of other cool stuff. Normally i just wipe them and start fresh but probably going to keep this one as it.

It's very snappy and responsive too. Might be because i'm more used to running 486's, but even compared to running XP on P4 systems it seems quick with W98.

How disgusting.
>>
>>56180304
I've got a proper CRT for it, was just hooking it up, cleaning it, etc. Testing it on my main desk.
>>

>not having the monitor set to maintain aspect ratio regardless

Just trolling anyway familia.

Doesn't surprise me that it seems snappy and responsive. Pentium IIs have tons of power for Windows 98. I used a couple of Pentium II ThinkPads as daily drivers with Windows XP even, although those were 366s.

IPC in general means Industrial PC. There is a german company called IPC Computers, but i guess it's made by some generic small company and named IPC because of Industrial implies reliability.
There are megatons of machines from this era with names you can't retrace. Computer Manufacturers sprout like mushrooms and burst like bubbles at this times.

I had a 286 clone made by Advanced Logistics Research and I can't find anything on them.
