So last thread died in the fucking ass.
I like the look of the alpinist, i also like climbing and hiking.
What automatic watches are similar in style and features to this?
Surely the swiss make hiking watches.
What kinds of automatic watches are good for hiking/climbing and snowy conditions?

Not really worried about price, if it's similar to the alpinist then great, if it's more expensive that's OK too.
Just want to see what options are out there.

There really is nothing like the Seiko Alpenis. Swiss/German alternatives are usually too sporty (like pic related) or austere (like the Rolex Explorer). The closest is Seiko's own SARG series, and that other SARB that's basically a white Alpinist. If I had to have one <$400 watch in my collection when I can afford mid and upper tier watches, it'd probably be the Alpen0r.

Maybe you can write Deep Blue or Steinhart and ask them to make an "homage" :^)

Yes.

Buy a 5610 and have a watch which will be accurate to +0.00s/d with auto DST, a perpetual calendar, chronograph, world time, alarm and countdown timer for the next 10-25+ years.

Pretty close to an ideal fire and forget timekeeping solution.

Good to know ill keep an eye out.
I'm not going to rush in to buy something and money is not an issue if the watch is worth the value ill buy it.

Sup /wt/,
Im looking for a watch in the 800-900 euro pricerange. Its for my 21st birthday so I want something that's classical and which I will still be able to wear in ~20 years.

Was looking at Hamiltons today (pic related) and at some frederique constant. What would you guys recommend? Also, should I buy at a jeweller or some other place? Very inexperienced with buying watches!
>>
>>56141546

That's a pretty cool looking watch in that pic. I like skeletons and exposed design variants. A lot of people here don't.

Buy what you like, though. I've given up on focusing on name brands... it is more of a 'guideline' for selecting a watch than anything else. "How likely is this thing going to stop working on me?" is the only thing the brand tells me.
>>
>>56137596

Bretty gud, they were supposed to be the Soviet, more modest equivalent of luxury watches. The 2609.HA is pretty reliable too, but from a watchmaker standpoint it's a pain to service due to one or two design quirks.

Shame they didn't work on the current Raketa Avtomat movement a little more, I don't think any knowledgeable watchfag would pay 1000€ for a modern "luxury" watch ticking only at 18000bph.

>I'm actually kinda bummed that Swatch is about to kill off ETA.
I have no doubt in my mind that someone else would pick up the license and continue ETA production. the movements are too sound to just let go without an already mass-produced easily accessible swiss movement already in commonplace in the market.
>>
>>56145371
No, what they're trying to do is stop supplying non-Swatch manufacturers with ETA movements, and parts dealers with ETA parts. They want to degrade ETA into an in-house only manufacturer, only supplying Swatch garbage brands like Tissot, Hamilton, Longines, etc.
>>
>>56145454
Oh fuck, that's even worse. I knew they were pulling back on sending shipments out to Microbrands, but I wasn't aware it was that bad, fuck. It'd probably be better for them to kill ETA as a whole.

It's irrelevant if I needed or not, the fact that Seiko puts a 200m label on a watch that isn't capable of 200m is the company being dishonest. They have done it many times before, I expected from cheap chink shit brand but I am appalled that Seiko started doing it.

SEIKO METAL NO WATER RESIST! SEIKO ABSORB WATER

I own that watch, and yes when I worked as an apprentice water maker I pressure tested it. It was only 70-80m water resist.

I am not the only one I'm sure, the OVM is one of the best reviewed watch this decade. Also when they said its rated at 300m WR, its been tested by DIN meaning Steinhart don't make fake shit like Seiko do. Now that I think about it, maybe all of that Grand Seiko bullshit is just Seiko overpricing their shit to compete with Rolex. When in reality the Grand Seiko is just another piece of shit Seiko.

Rumors has it that Rolex will be releasing a limited edition Sub 114060 with Ceramic bezel and sword/dagger hands on commemorate the 40th anniversary of the 5517. This watch will cost $8500 MSRP and will be introduced on Baselworld 2017.

Time to start saving...
>>
>>56146806
I'm glad you're confirming everything I said is true. You're new and don't know shit but want to act like it.

But people who have been around watches and know more than you seem to have the opposite impression than you on both Steinhart and Seiko. But of course your experience with a defective watch a shopkeeper gave away for free, probably because he didn't feel like going thru the return process from his distributor, and your experience with the steinhart being the most expensive watch you've ever owned trumps that. Clearly you're going to have a good understanding of quality and brand value by now.

Fucking kids these days.

>>56146900
>excuses for being flabby
The point is, you shouldn't wear watches. That looks absolutely riduclous.
>>

https://www.thrillist.com/gear/what-your-watch-water-resistance-numbers-mean

Here's a explanation of the difference between 20BAR and Divers 200M. No 20BAR does not mean its a fucking dive watch, you can however swim and snorkel in it which is what most people would use it for when it comes to water.

>>56146903
Rolex is not doing this, people asked them and they already said no. There is however a shit Rolex mod company called Bamford which is modding the 114060 to look like a 5517. No it will not be 100% identical, the 114060 will be more of a Rolex homage to an unobtainable Rolex.

By the way, I used to own a shitty ~$200 Seiko Quartz Chrono (mechaquartz?), that I went swimming and diving with regularly. No screw-down crown, no screw-down pushers, rated 100m. As a dumb kid I played with the chrono, under water, all the time. No flooding. No moisture whatsoever (opened for inspection multiple times). If anything, Seiko under-rates their watches' water resistance. For anyone actually interested in something other than shilling and shitting up the thread, read up on the water resistance thread on WUS and you'll learn that a screw down crown is not always necessary for water resistance.

Is 15.5mm to thick for a casual watch that is borderline dress watch?

It's a very thick watch. Pretty dark thick for something you expect to slide under a cuff unless you're wearing very loose clothing

Honestly, on first sight there seem to be imperfections, as >>56150291 stated, which you won't find on proper swiss watches (let alone a Rolex). But if you want to be sure, go let it be checked at an authorized watchmaker/dealer. Did you get the watch with a proper box / warranty card?

>RADO's differs from the traditional Swiss watch makers in that it leans towards innovative uses of high tech materials in distinct design. RADO has focused on pioneering the use of a number of materials that are unique within the watch making industry, such as hardmetal(tungsten- and titanium carbide which they call high tech ceramics), ceramics, lanthanum and sapphire crystal.
They also have the world record for the hardest watch in the world. 10k vickers

>>
>>56151665
Yeah, was just checking what you meant. I have one of their high tech ceramics.

The materials usage is interesting and I like it. Keep in mind most of their models are towards the more affordable end of ceramic watches. So when you look at something like a ceramic speedmaster, they have many hard edges and a some really nice contrast between polished and even brushed surfaces. With Rado they often have to round everything out and give it a single (generally smooth polish) finish on all surfaces. That's one of the reasons they've been able to incorporate so many hard-to-workw-with and unique materials, because they've kept finishing and working with those materials to mostly very straight forward procedures.

There are Chink sellers on Ebay that market a specific and prolific boutique lighter that counterfeits can sell for about 600 or more. The trick is that these sellers have a code word in the description title of the lighter so you know you're buying a replica of a 2k fart sniffers lighter for only 30 bucks.

Rather than thinking you're buying a real one for several hundred and getting sold a piece of shit.
