Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread. ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

>>
>>56100341
I'd just like to interject for a momment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.

Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

I'm fucking clueless. got a feral hosting seedbox slot and they allow SSH and you can fuck around with anything you have permissions for, so I wanted to install mpd to stream music.
I compiled mpd fine but can't make it detect LAME. I compiled LAME from source as well but still it doesn't get picked up by either mpd nor ffmpeg, they still say libmp3lame is missing.

I have no idea how this stuff usually works, so I just follow their guide at https://www.feralhosting.com/faq/view?question=195

I run Arch with a custom kernel on my Dell V131. I used to use Linux a lot more than I do now but OS X is more functional as a main OS, since Nvidia's drivers are still absolute shit. This laptop is pretty comfy though. It boots in a few seconds from my cheap Samsung SSD and everything opens instantly.
>>
>>56100401
Don't have time to read pages of documentation. I need a system that can be up and running in under 30 minutes.

>>
>>56100420
Arch can be installed by a near-complete beginner in about 20 minutes, counting the time it takes to read the beginner's manual. Once you're able to boot the OS from your disk, it takes maybe two mintes to install whatever desktop or wm you want.
>>
>>56100418
Yeah, that's because you have a SSD. It'd take a half minute to a minute on an old hard drive like every other OS. Install Fedora.
>>
>>56100416
No it wouldn't, are you baiting? And besides, I need to have this system up and running in under 30 minutes. I simply cannot wait around for hours until all programs are finished compiling.
>>
>>56100448
That's categorically false. Other distros have a minimal install option and the added benefit of not being Arch.

>>
>>56100383
What are you trying to do, just play mp3s?
>>
>>56100482
Well that time is really cutting short, isn't it? If you've tried Gentoo and know for certain that the benefits do not outweigh the convenience, what are you doing asking us which distro to use?
>>
>>56100453
Arch took maybe 10 seconds on my old laptop with one HDD for / and another for /home. I tried Fedora on that same laptop, and in addition to being the most resource-hogging *nix I've ever laid eyes on, it's a pain in the ass just to install media codecs and it's even less stable than Windows 10. Any OS that makes you add third-party repos JUST to play an mp3 or use a browser that's not total shit is broken.

>>56100485
My fiancee installed Arch on her old netbook in about 30 minutes, having almost zero experience with Linux prior to that. Granted, I was there to answer small questions but she did the whole thing on her own. You can do anything if you RTFM.
>>
>>56100518
Installing precompiled binaries isn't an issue because I don't need to worry about using USE flags to trimp off MiB's from the total install size. It is a major inconvenience to compile large source on this low end CPU however. I have used a Gentoo derivative and dreaded almost every second of it.

basically, I want to stream music from their server since my home connection is shit.
I'd point to my torrent downloads folder and get music from there so it can both stream it and seed it.
Obviously they don't allow you sudo, but you can SSH and do whatever you want in your space.
As said, mpd works but won't start because it can't find LAME encoder (no such encoder: lame). FFMPEG couldn't find it either when I tried to make a configuration.

I have no idea if I can even do this in this little space or do I really need them to install LAME for everyone.

Pic related, only encoder is wave

$PATH should be correct, everything works just fine by entering commands 'lame', 'mpd, 'ffmpeg', it's all detected.

although, what concerns me are these 2 folders that spawned here in my user home folder, 'include' and 'lib' and they both contain. Are they even supposed to be here?

the process I did was basically as they recommended,
wget, tar xf
./configure --prefix=$HOME

Hi there!

You seem to have made a bit of a mistake in your post. Luckily, the users of 4chan are always willing to help you clear this problem right up! You appear to have used a tripcode when posting, but your identity has nothing at all to do with the conversation! Whoops! You should always remember to stop using your tripcode when the thread it was used for is gone, unless another one is started! Posting with a tripcode when it isn't necessary is poor form. You should always try to post anonymously, unless your identity is absolutely vital to the post that you're making!

Now, there's no need to thank me - I'm just doing my bit to help you get used to the anonymous image-board culture!

What distro should I switch to:
Currently running a more than 2 years old arch install, everything is still running smoothly except for the minimal breakages every couple of months, arch is fine but I want something that needs much less tuning and follow up.

I went with arch because of the rolling release model, I didn't want to reinstall every time a new distro version is released. Is there anything you would recommend for a laptop that's stable and doesn't require the same attention as arch. I would be fine with an LTS release, should I go with debian stable or it would to fucky to install on a laptop.

What I run on computers for normal users, including my family's computers and my desktop

>Debian Sid
What I run on my laptop

I've never had anything break on either. No, not even Sid. I just run Testing on my family's for peace of mind since they likely won't know how to solve a problem if shit does hit the fan sometime, and on my desktop also for that extra peace of mind. I run Sid on my laptop because I see it as my experimental learning piece of hardware. I use it for note taking and programming, and everything I back up to my desktop immediately via SSH anyway.

Short answer:
Testing if normal desktop user
Sid if advanced user that wants bleeding edge

Both are solid, but one obviously requires being a little bit more careful/responsible.

As long as you install apt-listbugs, you're good. And maybe subscribe to the mailing lists if you really wanna be super safe.

>>

netinstall that includes non-free firmware for your wifi should do the trick to install Debian on wifi. during the install it asks you if you want a DE and gives you choices, among them xfce. so you don't have to worry about that

http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/cd-including-firmware/8.5.0+nonfree/amd64/iso-cd/

assuming you have an amd64 architecture, there you go. if not, go back and look for your cpu architecture.

if you get unlucky and that iso does not include your wifi firmware, it will tell you which .deb package you need anyway. and you can load it via usb in another computer and plug it in during install when it asks you. if you don't have a usb in this unlucky scenario, then you will have to use an ethernet cable for the install and install your wifi drivers after everything is done.

9 times out of 10 though, everything should go just fine without tinkering around

>>
>>56102011
also, remember: you're supposed to do the netinstall of Stable like what that link above is for. then once it is installed, you upgrade it to Testing or Sid IF you wish.

Don't use installers to directly get Testing or Unstable. Those installers are for testing the installers themselves.

just give that iso a go, and see if it includes your firmware out of the box. if it doesn't, it'll tell you exactly what you need so that you can download it in your regular computer, put it in an external device, and plug it in during install if you wish

No, you can do it all from wherever you want. Make install will copy files to system locations.

Sometimes you don't/can't. If there is no make uninstall in the source code then it's pretty difficult.

I'm running Ubuntu Mate 16.04 and am pretty satisfied with everything except for the fact that the power indicator stopped showing up completely a few weeks ago and now I'm stuck using this battery applet that clashes with my overall system theme quite a lot

You can only guarantee that there is zero cruft if you picked out the packages yourself, and that you did not do. What about just having packages you need in your repos already?

look around at some of the other firmware-whatever packages too if you need something elsewhere. for manuals, maybe look at the debian reference and debian administrator handbook, then google the words/topics inside if you need further references

It is possible.
But a lot of things work different.
Files get opened with xdg-open.
This looks at the mime type, rather than the filename.
If there is a flaw in the music player and running a malicious file through it causes some other application to run, that will most likely run with the same privileges as the music application.
It is very rare, and when someone discover something like that, there usually comes a fix before the exploit is published. But that means you have to patch your system.

Python, JavaScript, Perl, hell even C. Language is but a syntax in 90% of cases. View the source code of applets for your DE. It's open source afterall. I think the best beginner projects are GUI clients. Create a GUI in Python that is simply nothing but a button that runs commands to update your system. It's how I learned. There were a lot of packages that I used that I wish had a GUI, because I'm a visual person more than text based. So I learned Java to make GUIs for them. Looks like Void is going more popular lately. Anyone here using it? Pros and cons?

It's just a couple of insecure hipsters and (not surprisingly) both are NEET

There is 0 (zero) reason to use void

no windowmaker/gworkspace love? anybody knows how to get rid of the clip (my autism is trying to make it look as close as possible to nextstep)?
>>
>>56107117
Stallman gets salty when people say Linux instead of GNU/Linux because Linux would not survive without GNU. Linux can easily be replaced with another kernel. Linus was offended and took shots at Stallman saying he's not pro free software or anything, but anti Microsoft. He cares more about hating on propritary software than encouraging free software. And he also said that Linux has a better chance on it's own than GNU. There's no BTFO about it. Just 2 people with different opinions. No picture needed to validate your autism

i just need the fucking picture

What autist made it become a thing where utilities like file managers, partition makers and archivers get added to Accessories categories instead of System by default? It drives me crazy.

How to SSH into (almost) any website as a guest and browse it?
Can one do this as a substitute for HTTPS when it isn't available, to have encrypted communications with the web server?

He's correct if you ignore the fact that the software that can replace GNU entirely on Linux already exists, sure.
You know, if you ignore reality and substitute it with your own, I guess.

Linux doesn't need GNU to survive. It never has needed GNU to survive, and it never will need GNU to survive.

OP here: Nope.

That has nothing to do with your GTK theme. They're icons and affected by your icon theme. Who would have thought?
>>
>>56107765
Well, Linux needed GNU from the start. Sure today there are many more projects, and some of them can be put together to replace the GNU project parts, but that doesn't change the fact that, at the beginning (1984), the only free system was the GNU system, which was used as base in the 90s to make Linux usable and is still being used on 99% of all distros.
>>
>>56107196
just hide it behind the dock senpai

What's even the point of removing GNU from your system, other than being a fragile faggot who couldn't stand an interjection?

Anyone here uses BTRFS?
I'm getting an SSD for my Thinkpad and thought I'll redo the setup on my disk instead of just cloning. Currently I have simple setup with a few ext4 partitions. For my new disk I'm thinking of having single LUKS container and inside of it maybe LVM and partitions inside of it or one instead of it with either Ext4 or BTRFS.

Reminder that http://gmic.eu/ exists.
- Cli image processing (like ImageMagick)
- GIMP plugin w/ more than 450 ebin filters.
Not sure if underrated but it's an amazing utility. Pic related, random filter.

that's weird mate, you can always tell i3 that the minecrat window is full screen on start and on a certain workspace. Are you using compton?

Wouldn't Antergos be better than Manjaro with Octopi? you can use pamac-manager and also install shit from the AUR

replaced Xubuntu with Antergos. So far I'm happy with it, it wasn't hard to set up everything back up and the AUR is a fucking godsend. Now I get why some people love Arch so much.
