Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread. ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

How come Fedora is the only OS where my wireless card works out of the box?

It doesn't work on Windows (I have to install a driver from the disc).
It doesn't work on Debian or Ubuntu (I have to install the driver from source).
It doesn't work on CentOS (trying to get it working now).

But on Fedora, it runs with no problems even from the live CD.

Hey guys my HDD bricked so so need to restart from scratch on a new HDD.
I'm a Windows cuck but interested in Linux a bit and think this could be a good excuse to give Win a try.

I'm eyeing Xubuntu to try out since Ubuntu is the most friendly distro(?) and installgentoo says Xubuntu is the most popular.

Thoughts? Should I give Xubuntu a try or are there better alternatives? I'm a normieish user that just does social media and plays vidya (most vidya I play works on Linux).

You're over thinking this. The only difference between Ubuntu and Xubuntu is the desktop environment. Namely, Ubuntu uses unity and Xubuntu uses XFCE.

Install what looks more pleasent to you.
And you can always install unity on Xubuntu or XFCE on Ubuntu anyway.

I really haven't messed with linux much on this machine because I always heard about how much of a pain it was with AMD cards. What options do I have here I heard ubuntu dropped support for old cards in 16.04.

I still have a lot of games that don't work with linux and I don't really want to mess with wine would it be possible to pass through both of those graphics cards to a windows VM with this old hardware? The mobo has an integrated HD4290 too if needed. Of course I know dual booting is always an option but I don't like rebooting even with a SSD

>I can install Arch Linux the Arch way easy, I did it in a VM.
Then you're already half way there. But really, what does learning CLI even mean? Do you know the basics of the shell? Then you should just man any command you want to know more about. There is nothing deeper to it.

There are too many programs that do radically different things for them to all be listed into one comprehensive book.
Like, if you wanted to process text you would know about:
sed grep awk sort head tail

But if you wanted to know how to do network administration on linux you would know about:
ip tc iptables

They all have their respective manuals but they're often out of context or too long that they'd all be included in the same tutorial or book.

You need to learn by practice.

Alright, guys. Probably a dumb question.

I have Fedora 24 installed on my home server. For whatever reason it will not set the correct resolution for my monitor. It defaults to 1280x1024 when it should be 1680x1050.

I followed the steps here: http://askubuntu.com/questions/377937/how-to-set-a-custom-resolution and it worked perfectly. After I do that it runs the monitor at the correct resolution.

However, after a reboot or even a log out it goes back to 1280x1024 and I no longer have the 1680x1050 option.

How do I make the "custom" resolution permanent?

It's basically Ubuntu that takes away not only your ability to install proprietary software but even the ability to FIND OUT OR KNOW about proprietary software.

According to RMS, you're free not only when you're just running free software.
Your MIND has to be free from proprietary software as well!

https://www.gnu.org/distros/common-distros.en.html

I am looking for an openbox replacement

I have a whole setup which is openbox as wm, plank and xfce4-panel on the bottom of the screen like pic related, compton for compositing, xbindkeys for keyboard shortcuts, dmenu to execute things that are not on plank, etc etc

I just use openbox because I don't know anything better
I don't use any of openbox's features really, I ignore its rmb desktop menu and I also don't like how it doesn't snap to edges when you drag and there isn't Arc theme for it

I want to like Linux because of the diversity in user customisation, but I've ran into a lot of common issues when using it on my laptop:
>screen tear
I do honestly believe my gfx card is not being used to it's designed potential. A lot of 60 fps videos and streams expose the horrible screen tear at the top of my screen. It's not as noticeable when scrolling but it does happen. In general, it feels like the hardware is being worked more while having substandard playback compared to Windows.
> does not detect active events such as video streams which should otherwise prevent screen from dimming or locking
I've used three distros all which have similar behavior. Have yet to find away around aside from setting the screen to never dim or lock which isn't ideal.

>>
>>56070066
Where do I start. Files will all be compatible if they are not fully proprietary and obscure. What you are looking for are file systems. If you use fat32 on the usb mass storage device you will have the least amount of problems. Read up on file systems for real. Basically default to ext4, avoid ntfs (and only mount it in read only) and use fat for things that need to accessible from every OS.
>>
One of the things that come to my mind these days is if when you are installing a distro like gentoo or arch, all the files in the memory or cd that you are using to install the OS, are loaded into ram or only some of them and the others ones get to ram when you need it,
srry if my english is bad

>>
>>56070066
1. If the flash drives were formated as FAT definitelly. If they were formatted as NTFS you'll probably have to install 'ntfs-3g' package if you want to have a write support, however reading will definitelly work.

2. All media files will work (all of which you listed). The only thing that won't work are the programs (.exe).
Although you can run .exe programs on linux using WINE (usually) there are bugs/problems. Most programs should work though if you really needed to run Windows programs on Linux.

>>
Is Debian Testing actually meant to be used as a daily driver distro or is it strictly recommended for testing newer packages for Debian stable as the name suggests?
>>
>>56070134
Concerning Arch's and Gentoo's installer disks, only the base system is loaded into memory and other files from the disk are loaded on demand.

You can test this easily. Just boot it up and then wait at least 10min until the CD reader idles. After that, type any command (e.g. lsblk) and you'll experience lag because the CD reader needs to run up to speed again. After you ran the program it's cached in memory and any time you use it again it's read from.

But It's possible to create a system that completely resides on the ramdisk though.

/fglt/ -- I have retired my dual-booted gaymen machine to server duties only (Debian stable) and moreover want to make it headless but still with an x server.

As part of this I had configured x11vnc to use display 0 with an auto-logged-in user because otherwise I couldn't get it to do certain super user shit like open thunar as root, etc. I'm not exactly sure why but this workaround was OK for my purposes.

At any rate, this worked fine until I removed my nVidia card and was going to just run what little graphical stuff I needed too off the integrated graphics (SandyBridge, i3-2120).

Now when I have a monitor hooked up to it I just get a terminal login. VNC still works if I connect to display 1 but I'm back at square one with no super user access. xorg.conf is still configured with the nVidia card as the device, and I'm just trying to figure out how in the hell I'm supposed to nuke my xorg.conf and rebuild it with my integrated intel (and if so, do I need graphics drivers and which package(s) do I need to install?).

If somebody can just point me in the right direction I can probably muddle through. Thanks in advance.

I think I just killed my SSD.

I really wasn't a fan of how bloated my debian install had become compared to my arch install, so I wanted to try starting from a netinstall, since it seemed to promote a more minimal install.

I told it to delete all data on the partition, and realized it was just going to do it "at that moment" so I cancelled it and figured I would just repartition it. I told it to do so, it did, and as I was installed, the kernel failed to install "Well that's weird."

I go back to erase the data this time since that's what it was telling me to do, and fucking sdb had completely vanished without a trace.

Anybody ever run into a problem like this, or is my SSD dead, jim? (840 Evo so it's already bad juju)

Okay, I cannot figure this out.

On Arch, I'm trying to install the Linux 4.8 kernel, aka the linux-mainline package along with the headers.

After waiting a couple hours it finally compiled and installed. But when I tried to update grub, it gave me an error: "sed couldn't flush stdout no space left on device".

I don't know how this can be true when I have a 30G root partition and a 500G home partition. Uninstalling the linux-mainline package fixes the problem... Any ideas? Does the linux-mainline package just fill up root? Is there a way to prevent that? I'm so lost.

In short, I removed several nVidia/driver packages, rebooted into recovery mode, reconfigured X, and rebooted. I got my X window to start up on the intel graphics just like normal on a regular monitor.

Then after disconnecting it I got a hilariously tiny VNC window so I had to install xserver-xorg-video-dummy and configure that.

All fixed now. I'm at least back where I started before removing the nVidia card. I still want to be able to ssh -X and do su shit now that I've discovered it but I'll leave that for another day.

Thanks to the responding anon(s), sometimes it's nice to just be able to talk it out with moral support.

New to Linux here. I have two questions:

First and foremost, what exactly makes XFCE more customizable than something like, say, GNOME or Mint? I very often see XFCE (and MATE, too) touted around for its customizability, but what qualities does it possess that makes it better than other DEs in this regard? I tried out GNOME, for example, and the bundled tweak tool/extensions system seemed to work pretty well. And yet, I've seen some people say that GNOME is actually rather poor for customization. So, what makes XFCE (and MATE) special?

Secondly, are there any guides on how to customize things in XFCE?

its pretty ok if you dont have multiple monitors. multiple monitors part is pretty unstable

i have to use a bash script to set up the monitors(and panels) correctly and refresh kde instance on my desktop
my desktop has ati(amd) 7950 so basically it runs a script at plasma start to set up the monitors and panels correctly.

not sure if tye've fixed it but my script still runs for a good measure

doesnt happen with intel graphics, with hot docking/undoking with my thinkpad x220, sometimes rarely i have to refresh my plasmasma
session if the panel is in an incorrect position

its as simple as kquitapp5 plasmashell;kstart5 plasmashell

it's something to do with ati grapics and qt.

actually as much as i've dwelved into the problem. its seems more of a QT issue rather than plasma/kde issue

if you're someone who doesnt use multiple montitors and hot dock/undock alot then kde bretty gud

i've used kde since kde3 and i have to say tht kde5/plasma2 is more stable than kde4 was in the early days.

sometimes my panels is shown on a inactive screen if i've switched a lot
the solution is to set up your panel and widgets and make the configuration file read only
other solution is to change the parameter lastscreen in your config file manually or via a script

I'm currently using Arch, but I'm thinking about switching distros.

Which ones are better - Mint, OpenSuse, or *buntu?

I use my main computer for engineering stuff such as matlab and official support is something I desire.

I also have a GPU-Passthrough VM that I play gaymens and use Windows software, so it's nice to get something that works well with it.
>>
>>56072855
Probably because XFCE is simple and you can:
>add more bars as you want and place them anywhere you want
>control what any icon on the bar does (so you can eg. use whisker-menu instead of default start menu)
And you can also edit most things programatically with xfconf-query or by editing XML files in ~/.config/xfce4/xfconf

To be honest XFCE is not that significally different from GNOME in terms of customization. And it's lacking a lot of features that KDE has for example (that XFCE-fags in turn consider as "bloat")

If you wanted absolute customization, you would use a stand alone window manager like Openbox.

That's the issue.
Windows supports only two filesystems: FAT and NTFS while Linux supports almost all filesystems. And because FAT is a disaster you must use NTFS which Linux doesn't support completely well since NTFS is proprietary and it doesn't have Unix permissions.

I used to have an NTFS partition mounted where I would temporarily put files I wanted to transfer to Windows. Personally, I decided to go full linux so I wouldn't have this problem anymore.

I don't have a separate PC for that, I don't want to deal with slow file transfer, and I don't want to bog down my home network for anyone else who lives here.

I guess I'll just defrag it whenever I use Windows.

Hey guys, I recently installed Kubuntu on my laptop which is my first linux experience and so far I love it. The customization, apt-get and stuff like that. However I do have a few questions and problems I want to solve.

First is my HDD, my laptop has an SSD on which I have linux installed and also an additional 1TB HDD. Now while the HDD is installed and everything it seems to be read-only and all the tutorials I see to make it R/W are for external drives, so how could I make it writable?

Another question I have concerns aesthetics. on windows I use Opera (There is literally no good browser, anything you want to recommend me is the same shit). The thing I am bothered about is the top border in Kubuntu, that is not present in Windows, it's just free space for tabs. Besides choosing "No border" every time I launch it how could I make it just like in windows?

How to spot a liar: the post. What do you get from lying on an anonymous image based internet forum? What's your thought process behind that? I assume you get a kick from tricking people into believing (anonymously) that you're smart?

Which decor line? Post your Openbox config. You most likely blindly changed that without realizing that it's part of a commented out example section. You need to specify more than just "decor", mainly which class of windows by using a general catch-all rule.

<decor>no</decor>

My micro PC is coming in the mail tomorrow. It has an underclocked haswell i5 in it.

I am going to run it as a PLEX server, and to torrent some. Being underclocked, I want to give it as much headroom for power as possible, which is why I want to use linux.

I am pretty ignorant of linux, how do I use the least amount of resources?
Probably gonna use Ubuntu because it has very good PLEX support.

If I like turn off the GUI, can I still do a remote desktop like thing into it and manage my Plex or my torrents?
Will I be forced to leave the GUI running?

I literally am sticking it in the corner, and it will be doing nothing else.

Usable? Yeah.

But I don't think I can recommend it over literally anything else. I want to like it - I really really do. But it just seems like everything I do is just a pain in the ass. Dual monitor support was FINE for me, but I was having a weird issue with firefox tabs not moving to another window and instead just opening a new window. I recently am reinstalling debian, and honestly I don't think I'm going to reinstall KDE. I kind of want to go back to xfce or MATE because of how bloated kde is. My last debian install was 2222 packages after an autoclean. Mind you - this is only after about a week of usage and setting it up to work on my desktop nice and proper.

I think the worst thing is that kwin just fucking vanished from my system without a trace, and so I had to reinstall it. I also had a weird issue where anytime I used audio, it would always reset itself back to 100 percent. The final thing that bugged me is that it's just so hard to do anything with it that isn't the default breeze. It just wore me down, and frankly I don't need that in my life.

I WANT to like KDE. I really do, but it's just frustrating.

I bet at least 900 of those were libraries.

If 1TB drive is NTFS you probably need ntfs-3g package. Or maybe you need to add rw option in fstab?.
Post output of lsblk and content of
/etc/fstab
.

As for Opera if there is a "No border" option and it fixes the problem then there is probably an option to make it permanent somewhere. You might google around.

just go with ubuntu server, and use the web gui for admining plex/torrents

Hello, arch user here. I love my install, it's extremely stable and light enough to run very well on a first gen i3 mobile and 4gb slow af ddr3.
I need help with the following;
1. I need to run a command (sudo dhcpcd tap-easytether) whenever a USB device is connected. How can I do that?
2. I'm on XFCE. Back in the day OS X had a program called "Quicksilver" and the modern Win 10 start menu mimicks it. You can hit "Super" type "chro" (chrome) press enter and chrome will launch. What are my options on linux for a launcher that can be easily used with the keyboard?

I want to press a keybind, have a menu pop up and take focus, and start typing the name of what I want to launch until its narrowed it down, then press enter.

Is the original UNIX even used at all anymore? Did any of the original UNIX versions (not talking about BSD, I'm talking about the original UNIX) source codes ever get released or is BSD the closest to UNIX source code getting release?

I have no doubt in my mind you aren't wrong.

But then there's the issue of "is KDE really worth 900 libraries?" I wasn't expecting it to be on par with how my arch distro + MATE is, but that's a LOT of packages only for it to have as many bugs as it does. Which is a shame, I kind of like kwin. It's nice looking.

In most cases the footprint isn't much larger than the laptop itself. You plug desktop peripherals into it so you can use it more comfortably at your desk and you can push one button to undock it when you need to take it with you.

Plugging in all your peripherals and unplugging them every time you need to go somewhere is misery.

I'm trying to run Tahrpup on an old HP computer. When I run the DVD it says "This kernel requires an x86-64 CPU, but only detected an i686 CPU".

Can someone tell me which version of Tahrpup I should get?
>>
>>56077944
I think BSD is the closest to UNIX you can get.

You have Darwin by Apple, though. Apparently the kernel is UNIX as well.

I think GNU/Linux (or as I've taken to calling it GNU + Linux etc etc) just took over because of convenience

Ah, I don't get those either. They're just containers for shortcuts. I like Openbox's completely configurable "everything in a desktop right-click" menu. But then I was formerly a Windows user that pinned everything I gave a shit about to the Start menu and had NO desktop shortcuts too.

Different strokes.

I'm falling for it.

I have a smaller SSD (120 GB to be exact) I also dual boot now.

Why shouldn't I care about software taking up space on my computer? Sure, the difference is probably not enough to really hurt me long-run, but 1200+ packages is a LOT compared to like 200 at most for say xfce or MATE.

I'll agree that anybody who wanks to having some SUPER MINIMAL DISTRO UNDER 200 PACKAGES is a filthy neckbeard, but needlessly bloating your install because somebody called you an autistic package counter on a Malaysian hair-brush vent is much more autistic.
>>
>>56078356
Then you should still care about installation size and not the number of packages.

My computer is fucking bricked and I don't have any idea what happened.
I was using Ubuntu 10.04 and I connected my computer to my TV with an HDMI cable to watch a movie. When it was finished I unplugged the HDMI cable and suddenly my laptop froze and I had to force restart.
Since then it will not work. I get an "aloc magic is broken" error and then the blue screen of death saying "critical system error" and it restarts.
Literally all I did was unplug the HDMI cable and it froze and I've been dealing with this since

I was talking about the main packaging difference between debian and some other distros. It splits libraries and binaries into different packages, which is a good thing but unfortunately inexperienced ricefags believe lower package count=better.

>>56077620

>>
>>56079040
Oh I never knew that.

I suppose I was just speaking in terms of space and size difference of packages compared to something like xfce. I've always kind of went on the philosophy of "the more libraries software depends on, the more places you have where it can break apart"
