Well, since root is now possible on the vzw HTC 10, I got that version. Their service is just so much better here plus I want the $100 in accessories.
>>
>>56019188
I'm getting one myself, unlocked since I wanted to switch to AT&T/Tmobile. Trickier to unlock the VZW model though.
>>
How can I get flash support on my chrome browser? I'm using a samsung galaxy s5. I already tried installing adobe flash player.
>>
I'm willing to wait for a budget (around 400usd) phone that's:
-1440x2560, 5.5"~
-big battery
-no lag/good ram
-nice camera
-unlockable w/o voiding warranty or close to stock
Will the bigger nexus have all these?
Currently I'm thinking axon 7 but I'm waiting for the nexus and am open to suggestion
>>
>>56019342
The bigger Nexus most likely, but it will be pretty expensive.

Axon 7 won't let you keep the 2yr warranty, plus it has some manufacturing QC issues so you'd need to make sure your phone wasn't defective. Still not a terrible phone though.
>>
>>56019367
Is there no chance someone will find a way to root the Axon 7 without having to tell them/void the warranty? How much do you think the bigger Nexus will be, and can I get it cheaper on contract?
>>
>>56019383
Unless someone makes some kind of unlock tool, unlikely. You have to request it, so they'll have your name and serial.

I think I might fall for the T-mobile's Band 12 meme, any decent $150-200 phone that's compatible? Is Band 12 even worth it? I get shitternet where I live (semi-rural, I get LTE on my unlocked Note 3 a mile down from me)

Looked into the Moto x pure at all?
I've got one and it seems to meet all your expectation, except the battery (only 3000mAh).
For me, the battery easily lasts a full day though, and I can sometime stretch it to 2 days. It also has quick charge.
It's probably the smoothest phone you can get that isn't a nexus, since it is running stock Android.
If you've got any more questions feel free to ask and I'll try to answer them.

What Android should I get? Is there anything worth waiting for?
I don't do much other than browse online/text/take photos these days so I don't need a big screen, Gnex had a ~4.6" screen which was fine for me. Not sure what the new camera gimmick is these days but I just want a good battery for the most part.

depends on where you live, check the tmobile map: http://www.t-mobile.com/coverage-map.html

i can tell you that i had a non band 12 phone for a while with a Tmobile sim and I had 2G service all through a vast part of eastern Connecticut (there's nothing there) between the ocean and Massachusetts, but since I upgraded to a band 12 phone it's 100% LTE the whole way. The question should be, will Sony finally make a flagship that equals its rivals. They haven't done so since Z3.

Those corner cameras trigger me. Increased sensor size is the single largest improvement that can be made to mobile photography yet supposedly elite OEMs trap the sensor in the corner. They're basically conceding at a glance that this phone's camera will be a gimmick.

In August 2014 I moved to Japan and bought my first smartphone, an iPhone 5S.
My contract is up and I know I want a larger phone.

My two options
1. Start a new contract ($65-70 a month)with the Note 7 or Xperia X Performance or whatever is called.
2. Buy a used Note Edge for $300 and throw a new battery in there, or used Z3 for like $250/300, get a SIM off contract for about $35 a month with more data.

Obviously option 2 will save me a ton of money, but I guess I'm wondering how reliable the lifespan of a used phone would be? I'm assuming the Note Edges replaceable battery might keep it going longer, but I would also think it might stop getting update support at some point.

Has there been a consensus reached on battery degradation already? How are you supossed to take care of your phone's battery? Charge it up to full and use it until 0%? Keep it bouncing between 30% and 80%? Do whatever but don't let it drop below 15%? Don't use it while it charges?

Does it matter how old your phone is?
>>
>>56023175
Lithium ion is a pretty known quantity at this point. Keep it between 30% and 70%. Don't ever fully discharge. Don't keep it topped up. Don't use it while it charges. Don't let it heat up too much. No matter how well you treat it, it'll still degrade over time, that's just how batteries work - however, you can still do a lot to ameliorate the degradation.

Hi /spg/,

I have an issue you might be able to help me with: I bought a phone (samsung galaxy s6) off someone 2nd hand. 6 months later, the phone became locked and apparently the person I bought it from rented it and stopped paying.

Now the phone is completely blocked with a message to pay $500 to the rental company to unlock the phone.

Is there anyway to remove this lock on the phone? There's no way I'm paying that money and frankly I can't afford it.

What non chink phone is best for under £200 and what are the chink options? Id rather get a decent branded phone than get a chinkshit phone but if the specs are good then I may consider it.

Considering atm: lenovo zuk z1, Moto g4 3gb/ 32gb

Need to play Pokemon go at good frame rate and currently on first gen Moto g

this, is quick charge harmful to the battery?
I'm kinda worried, just got myself an OPO, though it's just 1%-per-minute charge.
>>
>>56028527
It wears it out MUCH faster, yes.
The best practice for quick charge is to only use it when ABSOLUTELY necessary.
The overall useful lifespan of a battery is directly inversely related to how quickly it is charged and discharged.
The only phone where quick charge isn't horribly harmful to the battery is the OnePlus 3. It moves the VAST majority of the heat away from the battery, and moves it to the charger.

What quackery is this? Are you implying the OP charger has a heatpipe running parallel to the charging cable back to the wall? Are you implying the charger has a heatsink?

There is a difference in per-charge lifespan but not a tremendous difference in overall lifespan, assuming the cells used are rated for 18W charging (roughly 5A). 5A isn't an extremely high charging speed for most lipo cells. While it will affect the overall lifespan of the battery, it won't wear out "MUCH faster."

However, heat will thrash lipo and li-ion alike. If your phone is designed inadequately to sink heat from the charging port and power cell, that'll kill the battery relatively quickly.

>>56028925
The circuitry that negotiates charge speed isn't what causes heat. The heat is from the inefficiencies involved with transferring wattage.
>>
>>56028925

So? The heat is generated in the battery itself regardless of charger. The regulatory circuitry does not generate the "VAST majority" of the heat.

This is FUD.

Hi, my xperia U finally broke (after 4 years) so I am looking for a new mid-level smarthphone that will last 3-4 years too

I have 150-200USD budget, live in Czech Republic

I've heard 16GB ROM (or 8GB without bloatware) and 2GB RAM is a must (?) Also I'd like SD card slot, but that is probably all.

The main concern of mine is that I can't orientate in this wave of new smartphone brands and thus know which ones are more reliable than others.

I thought about discounted Nexus 5, Huawei P8 Lite or Huawei G7
>>
>>56029144

Are you feeling well? That picture is simply showing you how manufacturers differ on charging algorithm implementation and heatsink tolerance. Is the HTC 10 charging faster than OP3 because they've chosen to accept a higher temperature? Probably so. Does that mean the HTC 10's battery will have a reduced lifespan? Possibly. It's a engineering decision based on probable usage scenarios and expected lifespan.

Instead of spreading FUD, simply attempt to understand that charging a battery generates heat. How much heat depends on how quickly it is being charged. There are no magic chargers that change the effect of the laws of thermodynamics.

you have to use a different 'launcher' - basically a different desktop. everything else on your phone stays the same, only the homescreen is run by a different app (right now it's run by 'Google Now Launcher', a standalone app by Google).

Get something like Nova Launcher or Apex Launcher, and that'll be the app running your homescreen.

I too hate the the search bar, because if I want to search I hold down the home button. And I don't use the Google Now features so I don't need the Google Now launcher. However I find myself coming back it. Nova just feels too autistic. All I wanted to do was remove the bar, not tinker with a million different little things. Apart from the search bar, Google Now Launcher is simple and comfy.

In next two months my contract for Samsung Galaxy core plus will finally be over.

I've been trying to find some good phones in price range between 200-250$, even a bit more expensive ones would be fine with me.

So far I've been interested in either Honor 7, Nexus 5x, any phone from One Plus series and Redmi Note 3 Pro.

At first Honor 7 looked the most interesting to me. Design looked pretty cool, the sd card slot was there and hardware seemed to be almost too good to be true. However after reading some reviews I discovered that Honor 7 tend to overheat a lot and it's Benchmarks ain't all that good. So then I started thinking about some other phones in similar price range and somehow got to read a little bit about the earlier mentioned mobiles. They all seemed pretty fine, however what troubled me, was the fact that they didn't have the SD card slot.

So my question is, which one of these phones would be the best for me? I live in Poland.

It demonstrates no such thing. The graphic states that the charge period is at 40 minutes and does not show the charge of either device. It shows the temperature of both devices. Assuming the graphic means both devices have been charging for 40 minutes, the HTC 10 is clearly drawing more current and is hotter and if the batteries are equal, will have charged higher than the OP3.

>>56030946
Since I assume you will be too lazy to read the article, here's another quote
>Because this keeps the OnePlus 3 cooler while charging. Phones with Qualcomm Quick Charge support have a special circuit in them that reduces the high voltage coming out of the charger to something that the battery can handle. This generates heat inside the phone – heat that might slow down the phone's CPU and GPU and that could slow down the charging process. On top of that, exposing a battery to excess heat is a surefire way of reducing its lifespan. Dash Charge, on the other hand, has most of the voltage- and current-regulating circuitry built inside the charger, so there's very little inside the OnePlus 3 that can produce heat while charging. As a result, there's a lower chance of CPU and GPU throttling if you choose to play a game while your OnePlus 3 is charging. Also, the rate of charging is less likely to be affected.

Is there a way to COMPLETLY block apps or just the whole phone from downloading or uploading data when mobile data is activated? And those that I will allow to upload and download set to the absolute bare minimum? I have just 100MB of data and I want them to last as much as humanly possible while still using internet stuff.
>>
>>56030946
Look, wattage is wattage. The voltage seen by the battery will be the same regardless - the only difference is whether they're finding efficiency gains by increasing voltage to then buck inside the device (which will create more waste heat, because no conversion is 100% efficient) or by sending more current through the cable.

The positive and negative aspects are fairly clear if you understand basic electrical principles: higher cable voltage will be less efficient due to required in-device bucking, while higher cable amperage will be more efficient but require higher quality cables and adapters.

Ultimately I prefer the more cable-agnostic solution even if it does mean less efficiency, because waste heat can be transmitted away from sensitive components with proper design.

>>56031021 here
To make things completely explicit, higher voltage can be handled by any cable with moderately decent insulation, whereas higher amperage requires that your cable use higher quality, thicker strands; it's cheaper and easier to ensure that your cable can transmit higher voltage than amperage.

Higher voltage failover means slower charging speed.

Higher amperage failover means melted cables.

Why isn't there a 5,1'' OP3 ?

It's just too big....
>>
Should I wait for the next Nexus?

I've owned the 5 and currently own the 5x and I want to upgrade, but not sure if I should buy a OP3 or wait?

I'd spend around $560 CAD with the OP3, any chance the next Nexus will be around that price with better specs?

My needs:
>Typical social apps: Snapchat/Facebook/IG

>Whatsapp/Texts

>WiFi Spotify / YouTube

>Battery life over 4hrs SOT

>Multitasking to be decent (so minimum 2GB RAM?)

>No Gaming except for Pokemon GO at the moment

>Maximum $400 USD / $530 CAD

>MicroSD not necessary

>Decent phone speakers, not very important
>>
>>56032783
Is this typical with One Plus? Im scared now seeing how a simple flashlight wont even turn on for some folks
>>
>>56029289
Are you feeling stupid? If not, you will be.

Go read about Dash charging utilized in the OnePlus 3. Read it? Good. Then you will know that the proprietary dash charger includes all of the circuitry to charge the battery inside the charger itself, which is why it is larger than typical wall wart chargers. Due to this, the charging brick itself generates all of the heat when the phone is charging, and not the phone. This keeps the phone cool as a cucumber while very rapidly charging the phone. It would be an absolute breakthrough if it wasn't proprietary and patented by OnePlus. Also, you have to use both the Dash charger AND Dash cable (since the cable itself is a special USB-C cable, with different pins and volt/amps).

I hope you feel less stupid now.

i bought a iphone se because i wanted a smaller phone with top of the line specs

i returned it because i didn't want to pay a premium price for a 4 year old screen

anyways should i buy one? why couldn't they at least do 720p?
>>
>>56033748

Thanks, but you're over an hour late. >>56030946 already got all the points.

I admit that I was wrong. I wasn't aware that OP's method was proprietary and used an incompatible method to increase current past plain-Jane USB cable specs.

Does this mean you guys can't have quick charging at all without having the wall wart and cable with you?
>>

Yeah, it was a little unusual, I notice some slight slow down ion the phone a few seconds prior. Unresponsiveness to touch and delays. Then it just went off and that was all.

Redmi Note 3 Pro

CyanogenMod Official

Feels good man
>>
>>56034667
Is shit desu

Neither the official nor the unofficial ones are somewhat stable/got all features working ok.

I'm on MIUI 7.21 (with autobrightness fix) and everything works perfectly, fast and the battery life is also better than with any CM I tried, even with different kernels.

I would rather use CM, but MIUI is just way better in pretty much everything. :/

That's the downside to Dashcharge, you gotta shell out for those $25+ chargers if you want a second one, or a car fast charger.Great tech but proprietary and offsets the budget-ness of the OP3 somewhat.

>>
>>56033682
probably not. but in my entire personal experience with them i've received ONE phone from them that didn't have some flaw in manufacturing out of 3.

>first OPO in august 2014 had the yellow screen issue and hardware fault random reboot issues
>sent it in for replacement right as warranty was ending august 2015
>second OPO was fine, even had preinstalled screen protector (lower quality than you could get anywhere else, but still)
>realized it had gimped reception on tmobile 6 months later
>think about buying a new phone around 2 months ago
>OP3 hits
>everything looks great but the stupid faggot screen and lack of microsd
>say fuck it and order it
>get it here
>preinstalled screen protector doesn't even cover the entire screen this time
>bought the karbon case with it, thing is a flimsy piece of trash and the texture is non existent, and carbon pattern is painted on
>think "whatever, i'll deal", order up some higher quality screen protectors with amazon prime
>start restoring new phone, making everything as close to old phone as possible
>time for bed, put it to charge and sleep
>wake up, phone instantly reboots the second i touch it
>comes back to life, flash light option is completely missing in the OS
>wat.jpg
>gesture to turn flashlight on, phone freezes and reboots again
>finally back up, open camera app, rear camera doesn't exist
>there's no button for switching in the camera app
>download another camera app, same thing
>rear camera and flashlight do not exist

within 24 hours. immediately got on support with them and returned that shit. even got the money back for the case even though it explicitly stated on their site that if you opened it it couldn't be returned.

all in all, fuck one plus. great rom support, their base rom is trash, and their hardware always cuts corners for the sake of that price. 6gb of fucking ram no one needed over a better screen or anything else. bought a moto x pure for even cheaper and never looked back.
>>
>>56035966
I think the 616 is a little less overheat happy than the 15/17, so you should be okay. You can root it too, it's got SD, and a finger print scanner. Downside is no quick charge if that's a boon to you, and it's not blazing in terms of physical or software features.

I posted this question last night about a locked phone from a rent-to-buy company:
>>56023436
I was able to flash a custom ROM for my Samsung s6, but the lock is still on the phone. After booting, the lock screen will show up.

There's no (stable) Cyanogenmod for the s6.

Are there other options? I would have thought the rental lock would be software in the OS, not something more intricate.

Before the someone relinks that stupid pic pasta ill give you some advice.
Never buy a non-S model.
Theres two options now depending which size screen you come from:
>SE 64GB if you had a 4 inch phone
>6S if 5inch (6S+ might be a stretch...literally)

Everything else depends on what you really need from a smartphone

This has probably been asked many times, but:

In Android (using v6.0.1 here), why don't the percentages add up to the actual-battery-used value? In PicRelated, remaining battery is 73% (so 27% battery is used), but the list percentages only add up to 11%.

I'd understand if the difference was 1-2%, but 60% of the battery drain is unaccounted for!
