Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Funny, I had the same issue July last year on my X220t too. Probably related to the insane stresses the hinge places on the chassis. If you play with it while disassembled, you'll see things flex. There may be a few loose screws inside
I took it apart and put it back together and the issue went away for a year. Same issue popped up but in all my incompetence, the spring loaded mPCIe slot meant that I bent the pins while reinserting the WLAN card so now I have to get an expresscard or USB one. Or try to pull them back into position. On the upside, the issue was once again resolved

>>55958127
An ok machine unless it comes pre smashed up to shit. Hopefully you got it for cheap though because X220s are pretty cheap these days

>>55958303
Depends on what you want. It's slimmer and has a guaranteed 1600*900 panel. But the battery life is shitter. The 6 cell is smaller than the normal 6 cell (48 Wh vs 60 Wh) and the only you can add more internal batteries is to get an Ultrabay battery which adds another 30 Wh)

Hey /tpg/,
I have a problem with my installation of windows on my x230's msata.
I want to make it my boot drive i can't set it as active in PE but i'm getting "the selected disk is not a fixed MBR disk".
So i'm stuck with booting from my old SSD that's dying.

What do i do so i can finally scrap the thing?

Also, i can't seem to boot from my msata on bios.

Then you put the battery back in and push the power button… and she lives.

Holy fuck though.

>Thinkpad is my first computer that supports UEFI
>decide to do the whole Windows install with UEFI instead of traditional BIOS
>Motherboard is now essentially bricked because I can no longer access the BIOS settings, and the Windows UEFI menu is useless
I think this is my issue too
>>
>>55959967
your computer never had a bios
it had legacy boot compatibility in a uefi system.
also boot into windows, open command prompt as admin, type "powercfg -h off" this turns off hibernation, therefore quickboot, which can prevent you from getting into the bios
or just hit restart which actually shuts down instead of hibernating it.
>>
Has anyone here successfully removed a supervisor/BIOS password before?
>>
>>55960051
Yeah, nevermind. My issue is a lot more simpler than that. It's most likely hardware related since though my led's light up, the screen is dead and no keyboard inputs are going through so nothing is going on behind the dead screen.

Fuck
>>
>>55959613
Funny you mention that since its likely my poking around when i installed the msata that fucked the whole thing up. Though i've been busting open my acer countless times and haven't had any issues despite being more "poorly designed" than a thinkpad

Currently using a shitty T61, here.

Dumb question: Will an X220 be able to run regular Ubuntu? I've only had my T61 and another shitty HP laptop as portable computers, and they didn't work well with Ubuntu (not the fault of the OS, obviously). Used only desktop PCs before that.
>>
>>55962395
kek you fucking retard that's not bricked.

You essentially don't have a boot record, so it's not seeing the HD as a boot device.

reformat, reinstall and shut the fuck up.
>>
>>55962713
I've recently used X201 and X230 with Ubuntu 16.04 and they worked with no problems.
>>
Hi /tpg/. I have a few questions.

So I currently use a T400 with the advanced dock and a R7 240. As a portable laptop it's pretty good but as a desktop replacement it can be a little underwhelming. I run a P9500 in my laptop but it still bottlenecks some things.

So my question is: would upgrading the CPU to a T9900 make a significant difference in terms of performance in games and such?

My other question is is there any way to stuff a quadcore in the T400 or W500? Cooling shouldn't be much of a problem because when my laptop is docked the CPU runs at 48C stable under full load currently.

I noticed the W500 can be used with the dock as well so if I can get a quad core in it I could use it docked and as a desktop replacement when I need to and get a X200s for portability. I do actually own a full desktop for when I'm at home.
>>
>>55962713
I use the x201 (on it right now)

Ubuntu runs fine beyond a bluetooth feature not working.

the X220 is the X201 souped up, so yes is the answer. Runs bloody good on my x201
>>
>>55962713
I'm currently using Debian testing with KDE 5 on my X220 and it runs like a charm.
Very responsive and snappy, don't even notice any difference between my Desktop (i7-3770k) and the X220 (i7-2620M) in normal tasks.

Well I've bought a few units like that.

As it stands I've got a unit on its way missing hard drive, caddy, battery and charger.

A. It was really cheap

Also, without having to do this, 50% of my Steam Library is natively compatible with Linux, alongside with half of that running flawlessly on Wine without any extra configs.

"Le gaymurz xD" is a joke meant to keep /v/ away with their desktop threads, build a PC threads, speccy threads, etc. There's nothing wrong with liking videogames. Like I said above, gaming on linux is actually pretty fucking viable nowadays without having to do much fiddling around. If you truly want to be top percentage you gotta do that GPU passthrough thing, but it's kind of a hassle.

I prefer to just do with native games and Wine. Besides, with the advent of Vulkan, we'll hopefully see less DirectX shit and more cross-compatibility.

I got similar setup both at the office and at home although no eGPU at the office. Most of the time I'm connected to an external display with the internal display turned off so the limited estate of 1366x768 isn't a problem.

X230 is my favourite so far as it never gets toasty like the older models even on heavy load and I prefer the typing feel over the X201 I had and some X220 I almost got at one point. I do miss the old layout a bit but I'm not gonna fight the future as I'll probably upgrade to X250/X260 in a few years. I wish I could just make a USB keyboard out of the X40 or X61s as those were the best.

I've got an X220 that I like a lot. If I were to upgrade to the 9cell battery and the slice battery, what kind of battery life would I be looking at with Xubuntu.

I've read that with windows that'd be roughly 16-18 hours of productive time. Is linux ~75% of windows in terms of battery life? Would I be at 12 to 14 hours of usable time?

I'm very happy with it regardless.
It is an old windows install, but I've went over it with CCleaner and such. Primarily because the old user left Photoshop cs6 and office on it. But also because I can't seem to find a recovery partition or a factory reset program.

It looks like the combined watt hours of the batteries is ~158ish. My machine currently uses 11.2 watts for browsing and typing. So that'd be ~14 hours, right? Probably 12 hours for really intense stuff.

I might put windows 7 back on here just to see how different the battery life really is. 18 hours sounds awesome.

HP support just linked me to irrelevant guides, even a factory reset didn't help!

Ok guys, after some whiskey and anime i think i've come into terms with it. Moving on, i'll open it and see if i can diagnose or even fix this issue. If not then an alternative would be to get a for parts x230 that boots like:

Anyways, did your thinkpad boot to usb before? If it did, set up some random distro on that usb, connect it and blindly try to enter it, try to make any sound come off of it.

It was really frustrating. But hey, I get 20% off the next piece of shit from them! As though I would want another of those hot, unreliable, pieces of crap in my life.
I hear their business models are good, but the debacle with my dv6 turned me off them for good.
Partly why I bought a thinkpad. I understood the value of a computer that you can maintain, upgrade and use without worrying about parts falling off.
Just replacing the thermal paste required the removal of the screen, removal of the plastic at the back of the lid (why?) the complete disassembly of the motherboard. And their paste was more like chalk.
>>
>>55968327
>Anyways, did your thinkpad boot to usb before?
Yeah, i had a windows install on the flash drive and tried to enter bios but it didn't.
Powered it "on", rapidly pressed enter, it makes a sound when it enters bios which means its not booting at all behind the dead screen

no you can install anything you want
after you install it you just have to hunt down the drivers
google "(laptop model) support" and 99% of the time "support and downloads" will show up and that will give you your drivers
and yes any windows iso will work

also bonus: you can use your oem windows keys (at least win 7 keys) on seeming unlimited computers as long as you manually activate it by calling MS.
you can also use B!T(dot)ly(slash)1MdEX5X if you want to skip calling ms

I feel you anons. I've had 5 laptops in my life. 5th being a thinkpad.
The first one was a macbook in 2005 that got stolen.
The second one was a shitty compaq that slowed to a crawl overtime and had keys breaking on me for no reason
The third was an hp that like you guys, was a scalding mess. I'll never forget the day it powered off 5 times from overheating when i was trying to watch summer wars. It eventually stopped charging. Nothing was wrong with the charger so it was probably some motherboard issue.
Fourth is what i'm using right now, an acer that's had two hdd failures.
Fifth is my now dead x230.

I'm the T530 guy who had a dv6, and I gotta say I know that feel.. Nothing like being happy that your laptop is only at 80 degrees celsius when browsing.

I really hope it all works out for you. If the problem is localized to the drive, then maybe you can just replace the drive? I'm nowhere near savvy enough to give advice.

>>55968478
I'd say a Laptop is for what you need it to be for. Same reason that my dad's little car meant for passenger transport was used to move a big sofa once. As long as the task can be done, it's within the scope of the design. If not, then you change the design. In your case by using windows instead of linux.

Of course you can't deny that they're designed for a specific task, but to say you can't use them for another task is just silly. That's like prohibiting fishing from a wave breaker. Why?

They designed it to mainly work with Windows. Linux is just a side effect.
>>

I'm afraid I'm not competent enough to give much advice. What part of it is broken? But for me, if there's one thing about computers that I don't like it has got to be heat and noise. so if I had the opportunity I'd change in an instant.
Have you tried changing the thermal paste? Maybe that will bring your temps down while you still keep the performance of the i7.

It should work in the T440p, that's socketed and was designed to take quadcores.
>>
>>55969138
I'm in the same boat as you and i have several thoughts on this.
1. After googling, there's not much documentation on people buying used laptop mobos for restoration likely because people throw away their broken devices (if not under warranty anymore) and move on since its a process that not many consumers are willing to put themselves under.
2. There's at least some buyer protection if its DOA if you buy it from ebay though there's a chance it may destroy the parts that you outfit it with.
3. You don't know how's the shape of the mobo and why its being put up for sale in the first place. People drop and spill things on their laptops all the time.

So, you can
>scrap it and move on
>buy another used laptop that functions and fit it with your stuff though you're also taking chances
>go ahead with the used mobo
>buying a new mobo that's worth more than the price of the laptop
>pay a tech to fix it for more than the price of the laptop

What an unenviable situation this is

Probably because the air coming under the laptop has less resistance.

Speaking of mods, how many of you have opened your fans and heatsinks? I did some time ago and was a bit shocked when I found the copper pipe wasnt directly in the path of the air like i've seen on many old and hot laptops, pic related. Said laptops had 35w cpus like my current thinkpad but never ever went over 80 and you could feel hot air burning your hand when placing it in fron of the vents, not so much with my thinkpad.

Also it had what was in my opinion very few thermal paste or something black in it, definitely not soldered which would be the best way to conduct heat. Im going to get cheap thermic paste and add some where the heatsink fins and the pipe meet.

Why can't you convert to just Linux?

Or you could get a thinkpad, install win10 and move your hp to linux. but I personally prefer to run one OS per machine

I just got a X230 to replace my X200, cost me $120.
I don't know what the fuck you guys are saying, the keyboard feels a lot better to type on. The F keys and layout is a bit unfortunate though, those are definite downgrades.

that's really a more subjective thing

the overall build quality is a downgrade though

Strange, complete opposite for me on the non-tablets.
The plastics are stronger and less cheap looking on the X230 palmrest and screen bezel. Also no keyboard flex at all.
The tablets always felt flimsy after the X41t thanks to that tiny hinge.

You will get slightly better Intel iGPU performance with dual channel, otherwise whatever is cheaper it's best
Though it you plan to upgrade later to 16 getting the 8 stick is the best plan
Also, if you're keeping the 4 stick along with the new 8 stick you still get dual channel, but only on 8 GB of the total 12, Intel calls this Flex Memory iirc

My last upgrade was from X201 to X230 and I agree with you about the keyboard and build quality of X230.

They say that there were multiple vendors making the xx00-xx20 keyboards so maybe just some of them were bad. Might be more common in the EU as many countries have slightly different layouts and offloading that to a shit contractor is exactly what I'd expect Lenovo to do.

Seems pretty normal for Arrandale. I hated how toasty X201 would get under heavy processing.

I never reapplied thermal paste so that could be one reason for extreme temps though.

Thinking of getting a new battery for my T420 but over here shops selling 55++ or 70++ doesn't exist at all and Amazon/non chinese eBay sellers don't ship batteries to here so my options for a Genuine 9-cell are zero.

What's the worst it could happen with one of those Chinese batteries? I get that they might have less capacity or that are less reliable in the long term or leaving them charging unattended is a no no but are they capable of spontaneous housefires or something dangerous?
>>
>>55976117
Worst case scenario it dies in 5 months out of the blue and you're out 30 bucks plus shipping.
>>
>>55976117
You could try buying from a retailer that offers a warranty. If you're in EU I'd recommend https://www.subtel.de/
>>
There's a T510 on my craigslist for 100$. Should I pull the trigger?

Shipping from China is always free so i guess it's not a big deal. I'm more worried about the thing exploding or something.

>>55976237
I'm from South America but the import fees here are rather low so i don't mind paying for shipping. The thing is that no one ships batteries, not even the freight forwarder services over here and stores only have replacements for newer thinkpads, not a single 55++ or 70++ on sight.

I got a T420 a few weeks ago, and I'm pretty happy with it. Bought an Lenovo 70++ along with it and it keeps up for about 6 hours.

The right speaker was not working when I got it. The guy I got it from offered to swap the laptop but I said I'll fix it myself.
I'm having a hard time getting the casing off, pic related. Does anyone have any tips or some video that shows you you get it off? The parts circled with red are so hard to get off that I'm afraid of breaking the plasic.
>>

500mb. is that big enough for a recovery partition? Most of it was empty so I'd assume no.

Also is this ssd:Kingston SSDNow MS200 mSATA

>>
>>55976311
Double check that you've removed all the correct screws to remove the palmrest then try to loose the palmrest from the hole left by the removed hdd bay, start from the left then the top, after that loose the bottom of the palmrest with a credit card or something and leave the bottom right corner for the last, imo that's the difficult part because it's stuck with the 3.5mm port.

At least that's how i do it, it's tricky the first time then it's easy.
>>
>>55976289
My experience is that even the Chinese are somewhat wary of shipping batteries when ordering from EU.

I guess ThinkPads aren't a thing in South America.
>>

Ah, I see.
This might be a question that is beyond stupid. But where is the Ultrabay actually located? I heard that you could have a Dvd drive and an msata ssd, but where do I put it? Is there a guide somewhere?
>>
>>55979321
The Ultrabay is what holds the DVD drive. The mSATA drive is supposed to go in one of the two mPCI-e slots.
>>
>>55979321
You'll also need an ultrabay to sata adapter, unless there are adapters from ultrabay directly to msata (I don't think those exist)
>>
>>55979321
Ultrabay™ is just a silly proprietary™ name for anything shaped like standard laptop DVD-drive. For Thinkpads these are Ultrabay battery, Ultrabay HDD caddy and and a Lasedrisk drive namely. There was once a discrete GPU for some gayming lenovo normiepad, Y500 afaik.

DVD drive uses SATA bus, so you can hook up anything SATA-compatible to its connector.
It is more wisely to stick an mSATA SSD into one of mini-PCIe slots, if they support this action.
>>
>>55979409
I see. But does that mean I can still have the dvd drive, because that's what I've been told.

>>55979433
Where are those situated? I'm afraid I'm all out of small enough screwdrivers so I can't check. Is there a manual or guide to the layout of things in a T530? I feel like an idiot.
>>
>>55979433
Ultrabay differentiates itself from other laptop disc drive bays by being hotswappable.
>>
>>55979452
>I see. But does that mean I can still have the dvd drive, because that's what I've been told.
No... How would you even physically insert a dvd drive, sata to msata converter and msata ssd into the same thin slot?

That's what I was wondering, I couldn't see how you'd fit anything else in there.
Eh, maybe it's cheaper to just replace the HDD with a standard ssd. All the adapters and such really rack up the price.
>>
>>55979474
It does not. There is an independent spring loading system to pull it in and out, so theoretically you can put any laptop-sized disk drive or caddy in it.
Also, SATA devices are hotswappable™ by default
>>
>>55979476
Well, I think it is possible if we put an msata connector, a 1,8 inch HDD candy and a Sony Discman D-88-style compact disk drive inside an Ultrabay. Woah
>>
>>55979510
So would this
https://www.kjell.com/se/sortiment/dator-natverk/datortillbehor/harddiskkabinett/harddiskadapter-for-cd-dvd-uttag-hojd-9-5-mm-p61075

Would work for an 'ultrabay'
Paired with a toshiba q300 ssd?
Maybe even switch it around, so I can have the ssd in the standard slot as the boot device, and the HDD in the caddy for bulk storage. Then if and when I feel the need to use the optical drive I simply swap out the modules.
>>55979592
I'm sure that might work. Although I for one rarely ever use the optical drive.

You can have DVD drive or adapter with 2,5" drive in the Ultrabay, HDD in the 2,5" drive slot and an mSATA drive in the full-size mini PCIe slot. Three drives in total. There might be a WWAN card in the mini PCIe slot though but it can be removed.

To access the mini PCIe slot you'll have to remove keyboard and palmrest.
