Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread. ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

If it were Cinnamon/Xfce/MATE it could work but GNOME is a bit retarded.

Okay here's what I'd do.

0. Make sure you have wifi drivers installed. See the arch wiki

1. Make sure the network manager is running
#systemctl start NetworkManager
#systemctl enable NetworkManager

2. Connect to wifi
#nmtui

3. You'll see the nm-applet appeared again

Good luck anon

Going to buy a 2500k at ~95 on ebay, 8gb ddr3 for ~35, and a 470 for $200

I intend to contain the only malware that runs DX12 in a VM and do a pass through so I can keep linux running native. I need two GPUs if I'm not mistaken. What is the most convenient way to do this? A display switch for when I want to play games? Can I use the intel gpu for Lin and pass the 470 through to the VM?

So I've often said KDE would be a good desktop DE, and now I'm ready to install linux on my desktop.

I was leaning towards KDE, but i'm wondering if it's a good decision still for a desktop? I do dig the fact that firefox has thumbnail in the file manager, and it looks nice, but as far as stability and performance goes, is it good? It's been giving me some shit in the VM I'm in with 512 mb of ram, so I do have concerns. (I can always uninstall, but I suppose I don't wanna deal with it in the first place otherwise.)

I’d just like to interject for a moment. What you’re refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

>>
>>55939549
The installer is in testing stage. Debian's goal is to provide Stable. Debian's devs tell you to install Stable, then upgrade if you want Testing. For these reasons, the installer has the absolute lowest priority for fixing bugs. No one is supposed to use it except to test it, for another 2 years or so.

I've had about a 30% success rate with it installing a usable system.

It's the same scenario as holding Bitcoins on your local machine, versus keeping them on the account of your exchange. Bitfinex and Google are probably better at security than you, but they're also far larger targets.

It's unlikely that you're juicy enough of a target that a hacker will target you specifically. What you need to watch out for is automated systems that try to steal your password database (i.e. malware) and the only ones I've heard of target Lastpass (cloud).

So yeah, I'd say go with local. The crypto is strong and nothing about your computer screams "there's a password db hidden here".

Building question:

I am building mpd and disabling some stuff I don't need. I looked at the available options (configure --help) and found this for example:

>--enable-cdioparanoia

I don't need that. I tried doing

>--disable-cdioparanoia

and it says there's no such option during build time. How can I disable that feature? Some of those flags have (default: auto) or (default: disabled) next to them. I can't find any information about what those actually imply. Does (default: disabled) mean that if I don't pass that flag, it won't be built with that? What happens with flags that don't have (default:) next to them? Where can I read more about that?
>>
>>55944371

Turns out the cdioparanoia example had a typo. It's --enable-cdio-paranoia.
Either way, I'm still confused about the implications of the "default" note.
>>
>>55943832

For you and anyone else asking idiotic those questions: it means you don't even need the operating system you installed. The only reason you installed it (or asked that question) is to brag online about pathetic things.

First check if root can write to the file system. ie 'sudo touch file_in_flash_drive'

Then try something like
sudo mount -o rw,uid=$your_user_id_here /dev/sdXY /mntpoint

Just 'echo $UID' to find your uid.
>>
I am sold for trying something other than shitdows. I'm not asking for you guys to choose for me, Im asking what should I be looking for when choosing my distro, package manager, desktop environment etc.
>>
>>55944535
>distro
Your distro is basically the combination of 3 aspects:
1. Defaults (matter fairly little, if you're new you're going to change things around just because)
2. The support you find online (thought a lot from other distros will apply to yours too)
3. The packages (this is the most important: tradeoff between stability and freshness)

>package manager
Just use what comes with your distro, the manager isn't as important as the packages

>desktop environment
I'd go for something fairly complete like Gnome, Cinnamon, KDE, Xfce, ... rather than the minimalistic stuff like i3, xmonad, openbox, sway, ... because the complete DE tends to do a lot of stuff you expect your OS to do for you automatically, but require a specialised program in the minimalistic ones.
>>
>>55944535
For functionality, the main difference is how close the packages are to upstream.
Rolling release distros have newer packages. Distros with older packages have a longer testing time (though I personally don't think that really helps much with stability)
For maintainability, you might want a big distro so that if you have problems, you can google it and find someone else having the same problem and posting a solution.
For philosophy, it's how much they care for free software.

The last thing you should consider is your hardware, some hardware needs/runs better with non-free drivers, and new hardware might need newer packages/kernel
>>
>>55944535
You should decide how much maintenance you're willing to do and how much you need recent features.

Debian is very easy to maintain and nothing changes after installation. When a new version rolls out every other year, upgrading usually just werks. It has a huge selection of software, but things like DVD support require additional steps after installation because of their philosophy of free software. The package manager is good, but has a few quirks you'll need to learn.

Ubuntu usually works out of the box, has an even huger selection of software (partially from untrusted sources, which are easy to integrate if you trust them). Its big user base with many noobs means googling your newb questions usually results in Ubuntu-specific answers. After 6 months a new version rolls out which requires a complete reinstall, because upgrading usually breaks stuff. You can install/remove software by pushing buttons in a sort of app store, unlike in Debian where you'll use the command line.

Mint is basically like Ubuntu, but comes with even more media stuff preinstalled. It was created and is lead by a single guy, unlike Debian (international team) and Ubuntu (big company with questionable motives).

Arch is relatively high maintenance (updates come through every day and you're encouraged to read the news first to see if an update requires additional steps). The default way to do things is the command line. Under the hood it's simple and elegant, but its small repository means you'll need additional stuff from the user repository, and a second unofficial package manager. It also doesn't come with an installer by default. The documentation is top notch.

OpenSUSE is pretty, polished, mature, and has lots of graphical administration tools which are very well integrated. But lots of people don't like its approach of adding layers on top of layers of tools. Its repository and user base is smaller than that of Debian/Ubuntu/Mint.
>>
>>55944535
If you don't want to dig too far down the rabbit hole, right now installing Ubuntu will be OK.
The new LTS version is just out, which means you'll get feature updates for 2 years and security fixes for 5 until you have to reconsider. The spyware crap is gone. Just pick a flavor you like (I recommend Kubuntu), install, and you have a running system designed around easy desktop use, with a huge user base and package selection. What you think of the company doesn't matter cause you're not giving them money.
>>

Shitty story time:
I attempted to upgrade from Debian Stable to Testing, and during the process, my computer went into sleep mode which fucked up the login screen (I couldn't log in, it was repeatedly selecting and clearing the text box), so I rebooted (couldn't do anything else afaik), and it was stuck in a boot loop. I was too lazy to take a screenshot.

NICE "STABILITY", DEBIAN (I know that I probably just had a franken-debian that didn't update nicely, or I should've disabled my sleep settings beforehand)

I'm gonna try OpenSUSE to be a hipster and then Fedora after that. Any thoughts on OpenSUSE? I think it's biggest downside is probably that it isn't as widely used as *buntu, Debian, or Fedora.

Hello again. I want to compile a program, but it requires a lib version that isn't in my distro's repos yet. Can I install this library without worries that other programs break? Also, how do "backports" work? Can I backport a program for my distro myself?
>>
>>55946777
Welcome to Cinnamon.
It's literally Gnome, only customizable.
>>
>>55939432
You mean hibernate, not suspend
>>
>>55946944
I've tried Cinnamon, and it's breaking in a number of ways on me too. Problems with suspending, problems with multiple monitors, and occasionally 100% cpu usage for no apparent reason.

I will concede that apart from shit breaking, it's offers a very nice user experience. I'll look at it again when it's hopefully a little more stable.
>>
So, um, how do you update debian from stable to testing?
>>
>>55946209

What the FUCK is that?

Breasts don't have muscles, they can't do that.
>>
I need to edit my locale.gen file and uncomment every pound so I can enable all the locales (so I get rid of the annoying square)

How would I do this quickly?
>>
>>55947120
That sounds like a great way to break your system

Don't use Kubuntu under any circumstances unless you want to be a beta tester.

It crashes all of the time. KWin, the window manager, mainly. I had installed it at work, and ended up moving to Ubuntu Gnome by manually installing it, then removing KDE.

She's unhooking her bra.
>>

oooooooh

That looked far too fluid for a bra slouching.

Ah well.
>>
>>55947121
Breast muscles are chest muscles. If you're referring to mammary glands, those don't have muscles.
>>
>>55946141
You could look into installing Nitrogen. That should help you.
>>
>>55947205

Breasts go one top of the chest muscles. There for example no muscles in the under-boob side, so you cannot perk them up or let them hang on command.

Because she's wearing a proper/fit bra.
Most of the breasts weight should be supported by the band not the straps.

This is what I would do.
1. Backup home directory and system config files. My home directory already exists on a separate partition so this is easy for me
2. Make a list of the packages that I have in the package manager
http://askubuntu.com/questions/9135/how-to-backup-settings-and-list-of-installed-packages
3. Install the new OS that will wipe out the old OS
4. Configure the new OS to make use of my existing home directory, system configuration and package list

Fair enough.

In openbox how would I get the compton program to run upon logging in (and after running startx)
>>
>>55939403
Make sure you didn't install a network related package that conflicts with Network Manager. I don't even want to think about how much time I wasted before I realized that I had done this.
>>
how can i use this? https://github.com/tobbez/youtube-dl-aria

i want to speed up youtube-dl downloads by increasing the max connections setting like this guy does: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tU3Bgo5qJZE

Read the wiki page about debiantesting.
It's just changing your sources.list to testing and dist upgrade basically but please read.

Is there a way to keep the video data of a webm intact, so you only reencode the audio? Using ffmpeg via terminal.
Wanted to post a webm but encoded the audio with libopus instead of libvorbis.

nevermind,

youtube-dl -u *** -p *** -o '~/Documents/.1/%(title)s.%(ext)s' -f best -c -i --external-downloader aria2c --external-downloader-args " -j 16 -s 16 -x 16" --batch-file /path/to/file/1.txt

seems to be working. i can use recommendations to speed up the download if it is possible though.

By using Openbox's autostart file, the same file you use for starting everything else upon starting Openbox.
