Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread. ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

I want to share that a simple config file in /etc/modprobe.d/alsabase.conf with the correct order of devices was all needed to make everything output to the correct device, you can purge pulseaudio from your machine now. I posted this in the old one, sadly the solution to get metacity didnt quite helped.

I got ubuntu a few month ago and a buddy installed compiz or something and said its kinda cool. Nothing happend and I didnt bother deinstalling. Well yesterday I uninstalled it and now I have nothing. There is only my desktop background. I can get to the terminal but I am too ubuntu-illiterate to do shit.

Why do I get worse signal quality for my WLAN device on a Linux distribution compared to Windows? Of course there could be a different signal reporting ratio between them, but some things like video-chatting work better on Windows from the same spot in the house.

>>
>>55920633
Bash is the de facto for script kiddies and hipsters.
There are a lot of shells and not every system has bash installed. Furthermore, bash is very old and large so it suffers from security issues (Shellshock for example).
You should learn portable shell-scripting (i.e. POSIX) even if it is annoying at times. For example, you're not allowed to use arrays. But the problem-solving in that is fun as well.

how do I get dyndns set up on ubuntu core? is no-ip good or is it a botnet? is the 30 day renewal thing annoying? I just need it for my raspberry

I can get it a custom domain if that's important, but a free one will do just fine too

Hi guys so I need a little bit of help.

How do I set up encryption and when I boot my computer I have to enter a pashprase to decrypt and then boot. I have no experience with dm-crypt or LUKS

it doesn't quite work that way, you have to shut it down anyway and it's not 100% portable, you're probably going to run into issues

flash drives aren't made for hosting an OS - lots of small file operations etc. ; if you absolutely have to, get an external SSD, be aware that even with usb 3.0 it will be considerably slower than SATA

for work it's easier to have a file server and, if needed, remote desktop (VNC)

however as a backup OS for fixing stuff it's a perfectly viable solution

So far, it's aiight
I switched just b/c I'm sick of Microsoft's shit and all the games I play support Linux, and the few that don't I can just dual boot for
If you're shit with technology, stick with Windows
Otherwise, it's completely up to you

/g/ got overrun by tech illiterate normalfags

You know, the "friendly" in this thread was added because long time ago /g/ was completly GNU/Linux and bullied Windows useds all the time, but in this thread we wanted to help them to escape the botnet. Times have changed, and now we are the bullied ones.

Plesse explain:
>Ubuntu is possibly botnet
>people on /g/ recommend Ubuntu with different DE instead of unity
I know about the Amazon-thing in version 14+ but how is this still a thing? If Ubuntu seems to be suspicious the DE shouldn't make any difference, should it?
Also, which easy and user-friendly distro exists besides Ubuntu? I read bad stuff about Manjaro and Mint. So what's recommended? Please don't say arch our gentoo...

Honestly your best bet would be using a distro that does that for you in the installer.
Debian comes to mind.
The other way is to read through the relevant manpages and watch a youtube video or 2.
There is no shortcut to learning what you do, and if you mess up, you lose your data.

Protip: Don't do this at night while you're drunk, without writing down the passphrase you chose)

It was in Ubuntu from version 12.10 till the current (16). It's still installed, but now opt-in.

>Mint
Don't use Mint. It's insecure.

It was a Unity lens that sent your search queries to a few sites on the net (Amazon, Facebook,...). It was disabled by default long ago, so the only people it concerns were Unity users like 2 years ago. It did however damage Canonical's reputation among neckbeards.

There is still debian and fedora. If you can read you will be fine with those.

Well I guess after being cucked over 9000 from using Windows, some simple spyware and keyloggers don't hurt much, right?

It was enabled by default in all versions, except for the current. Stop spreading lies.

Why is the Mint updater asking me to "disable UEFI secure boot"? Should I do it?

So using Ubuntu without unity really is as safe as most other distros?
>>

if you trust canonical not to install some spyware again with next updates... yes
