If I can get the aesthetic I want with the performance/stability I want by spending $8 and avoid the shit driver/developer support of Linux, I'll cough that up in an instant.

Issue with ClassicShell is because of compromised hosting of DL mirrors not the program itself.

It is designed to free and open source your wallet.

I don't give a fuck if it's closed source, they're releasing the theme creator tool and that's what this program is designed to do.

Could the open source community do better if they had the source code? Sure, but they can make their own if they want, and they haven't yet.

If they do make an open source alternative, I'll use it.

There are already a fuckload of "gonna customize windows" proprietary programs. Stardock has done it better than most for awhile with ObjectDesktop apps.

This is a Kickstarter project. Okay. They have zero reason not to make releasing it under an open source license a stretch goal/condition of funding. Hell, they'd probably get more backers if they do! I'd back it immediately if it was FOSS and they could show a working proof of concept.

Not him but the no games argument is not true anymore. Windows is the best os for gaming mostly due to most game developers are trained into developing for it with microsoft's closed APIs, so the simple process of porting a game that was developed for windows to any other platform will affect negatively the performance of the game. This with the fact that the marketshare is small compared to windows there's hardly an incentive at the moment to optimize for linux, making look as if the platform were worse for games than windows when in fact to flip the situation you'll need to change the idiosyncrasies on the industry itself.

The fact though is that the situation on linux is not nearly the same than two years ago and now those who prefer linux over windows now can play games on it, helping to break the vicious circle, but still there's a lot of things to do for linux to compete in the gaming side. I anyone wants for this to change i recommend to play the games you can on linux when possible and ask for linux ports.

I notice some people doesn't want's for this to happen but if that the case let me ask (not directed specifically to the person i'm replying): how are any of you benefited in a meaningful way with the current situation? because i consider that keeping the statu quo just to have a tool to win an argument on what OS is better is not a meaningful thing. how having less options and practically being locked to MS products benefits you?

Driver support is better on linux most of the time, hell you can even run a full featured session from the installation media without even touching the hard disk.

Regarding developer support there's a lot of proprietary software for linux in case you're implying that open source don't give you any guarantee. You can buy support from different companies for open source operative systems if you're interested.

Alright I'll concede that we can play games on Linux, but it's on a significantly lesser scale due to the number of titles being available is a fraction of what it is on Windows and the performance is generally less due to shit drivers.

Do what you want, this is not directed only at you, but is an egg-chicken game and the people trying to discourage others from using other operative systems by spreading FUD just makes the problem worse.

Research by yourself, the situation is not so bad, the catalog of good games is big and growing and nvidia drivers provides good performance. The real problem is that companies creates games investing into windows-only APIs and the port is often an afterthough. Companies like croteam already shown that is more a cultural problem rather than a technical problem in most cases. It's up to you what you want to believe.
