I have a desktop with a 2 TB hard drive and a 128 G ssd that runs Windows 7 and it's mostly for gaymes but also schoolwork. Along with this I have my ThinkPad that is running arch at the moment. I'm looking for an external hard drive and I don't know what size I was thinking 1 or 2 TB. I'd really just be backing up schoolwork and my linux partitions.

rsync -ruvL --delete ~/Music /mnt/fuze

It "works" in that it creates a perfect mirror of ~/Music in /mnt/fuze, but it also is slow as dicks. Since it slows down especially on larger files I can only assume it's copying over what's already there.
How can I make rsync not do this?

I want to sell off my computer to build a new one. Probably Craigslist. Should I keep the hard drive? I've never used this computer for anything illegal, or for anything embarrassing even (my laptop is the designated porn machine), but the hdd probably does have some of my personal info. I'm just concerned about safety.
Would a standard windows refresh suffice? I want to be able to sell this as a "ready to go custom gaming computer" so it would take away from that to make the customer buy a new hard drive and windows key.

C++ question: I have a class A inheriting from several parametrizations of B:
class A : public B<Foo>, B<Bar>, ..., <ProcedurallyGeneratedCacti> { ... };

When I increase the number parents from 6 to 7 segfaults occur on a matrix operation. If I remove any of the parent such that the number of parents is 6 or less, the segfault on the matrix operation disappears (segfault occurs when computing the inverse of identity matrix, glm::inverse(mat4()), which should be fine).

So there's some weird shit going on with the number of parents. I managed to get rid of the segfault using virtual inheritance instead:
class A : public virtual B<Foo>, B<Bar>, ..., <ProcedurallyGeneratedCacti> { ... };
. Using virtual inheritance makes the problem disappear altogether and the code works flawlessly. The problem is I have no clue whatsoever what's going on.

Has anyone experienced this before?

tl;dr: What does virtual inheritance do when inheriting from several parametrizations of the same class?

I have 3 drives in my computer: 1 SSD for OS and 2 x 2TB HDDs for storage. I reformatted at some point, and I don't "own" my own harddrives anymore except for the SSD I installed Windows 10 on. I have to ask for permissions for doing things all the time. If I don't run programs in admin-mode, they don't get permissions to save stuff, so it either doesn't save or it crashes.

How can I take back ownership of these two 2TB drives?

Go to the drives properties>security>advanced, click change next to owner, type in your user name and check names, ok. Check replace all child objects at the bottom. OK out of everything, then go back into advanced again and hit change permissions, add your name or 'everyone' if you dont give a shit, then edit the name and allow full control. Hit ok. Check replace child object, uncheck include inheritable if it's there. Ok out of everything

Trying to install windows XP on a new partition.
First tried with a USB but I get an 0x00....7B bsod which is apparently due to some SATA settings. The thing is that the BIOS won't let me set the needed SATA setting to compatibility mode, so installing from a USB is simply not possible.

I still have the files from the ISO extracted though and can run WINNT32.exe

The only thing is that is says the PC "may" restart (thoguh I don't remember windows restarting whenever i have installed in a virtual amchine), but then it won't be able to read the files i think

Is it safe or will I ruin it all?

SATA settings shouldn't be related to running a USB install.

The easiest solution is often to burn a dvd instead

Your computer will reboot. Trying to run the install from a folder or iso within windows is a bad idea. You could try putting them on a dedicated temporary partition-

Try other installation mediums anyway. Have you checked out your mobo manual? There could be some weird physical switch for legacy sata or a specific bios setting. If you can't get your bios to the right sata setting there might be no way to get xp installed. I wonder why you want xp anyway. If it's for any other reason than screwing around there's probably a better option.

Why does

struct Foo {
virtual ~Foo() { }
};

struct Bar : Foo {
glm::mat4 m;
void func() {
glm::mat4 i = glm::inverse(m);
}
};

int main(int argc, char** argv) {
Bar bar;
bar.func();
return 0;
}

crash when compiling with g++ using -std=c++11?

The program doesn't segfault if there's no virtual destructor in Foo. I can also avoid the crash if I compile with -std=c++03 instead of -std=c++11, which seems odd. Any ideas?

Allowed? Allowed is simply a matter of what people will buy. If you had a company do hella bad with a model you might get a class action lawsuit. But if everyone refused to buy from a company that had shitty units, that company would fix their shit or go out of buisness. Laws that involve physical safety are much stricter.

You also have to realize that even on well designed HDDs and SSDs there's a failure rate of a few percent every year. That's just the nature of the tech

Here's a stupid question. What is the difference between a modern phone screen and a game boy screen? Why can't I see my phone screen at all while on low brightness setting in an illuminated environment (like sunlight), when this is what a game boy requires?

Maybe the existence of a backlight answers the question, but there must be more to it than that. Some sort of reflective layer?

this is pissing me off so much purely because it keeps defaulting

I've disabled it in options, I've disabled it in the about:config

what fucking other thing can I do to remove search suggestions from the first line o suggestions none of this shit works, I've saved the fucking preferences, I've restarted the browser, restarted the fucking computer

why won't it remove it from search suggestions
>>
>>55892834
They'll throttle your connection while you torrent and will probably continue to throttle it for a while after the torrent is done leaching, but it all depends on your ISP.

Is it possible to exceed speed on a speed-limited connection? My internet supposedly can only go up to 140 kbps at maximum speed. But I hit 200 kbps earlier, if only for a short time.
>>
>>55892879
If you are cloning then no, you wouldn't have to reinstall your applications unless you want them on a different drive than the OS. For steam you can just use it's backup function to save having to redownload everything
>>
preamble:
I did a ton of research on the xps 13, checked it out in store, picked it up, held it, looked at the pixels
it was perfect, loved the tiny bezel etc, very lightweight for college and gamedev, thunderbolt 3 for egpu later down the road
the trackpad was shit but I chalked it up to being the display model that kids and normies bang on all day long
so I bought one
the trackpad is actually pretty unbearable, any time I scroll down there's a 50% chance it just scrolls back up afterward, clicking seems to have either a deadzone or a small % chance to not click, etc
not the hugest deal and it's touchscreen and I prefer mice anyway
then I noticed a buzzing sound coming from the 3.5mm audio/dc in area whenever I interact with the trackpad
it's actually quite loud if you get your ear close to it
google said some other people had the issue and it's electricity running over the mobo

now for the small question:
do I exchange it and cross my fingers or just refund and look for something else?
>>
>>55892897
Could be a change to a new build of firefox. The one I installed over the weekend is that way. Have you changed your search provider recently?
>>
On my laptop, I have to press fn+F5 to refresh the page rather than F5 because on the F keys, there's volume up/down, brightness, etc.
How do I switch it around?
>>
>>55892928
If you hate the trackpad you'll probably always hate the trackpad. If it's a problem a lot of units have, imagine it coming back a year or two down the road and maybe not being under warrentee anymore. Might be allright, might not. You gotta do what you gotta do.
>>
>>55893000

I turned on my computer this morning and everything was fine, I went to work and came home and suddenly my shits all fucked up

I'm booting up my laptop because I just used it at work and it didn't have this fucked up urlbar. I'll post a picture from it to compare what I'm talking about

so basically side by side

I want to know how to get rid of this dumb first fucking line because it forces me to either press the down key twice and completely stops me from using "tab" key to navigate the same way anymore

fucking dog shit

So far I've disabled it from my search settings to provide search suggestions AND I've disabled browser.urlbar.unifiedcomplete boolean

both of these supposedly govern this setting and neither of them are active and neither of them work

update faster

the updated version fixed it
>>
what do you mean "update faster"

They released a version over the weekend, I got it today but theres some hotfix or something?
>>
>>55893157
I'm thinking this might just be a feature that's enabled by default on windows 10. I noticed there's a check box in search for integrating with 10 that's missing from my browser on 7. It may be on all current versions of firefox you could try updating your laptop firefox to find out.
>>
>>55893218
>windows 10
its windows 8.1 sorry I didn't mention that before
>>
>>55893228
8 then. I think firefox differentiates whether you are on 7 or not
>>
>>55893228
I think something fucked up

This line is supposed to be a boolean but it says its a string and every guide I look up says this line is supposed to be a boolean

whats the difference between a boolean and a string? How do I set this string to be "false" or what ever
>>
what do you mean "it doesn't works anymore"

They released a version a few months ago that works as expected, is there a reason to ditch that version?

my windows 8.1 didn't have this extra "search with google" line in it I even put it in red

I didn't have it this morning I go to work, come home and suddenly this is new it was the first thing I noticed because I typed "v" and then tab like I normally do and was surprised when I didn't go to 4chan.org/v/ instead it fucking searched the letter "v" in google

I'm on a horribly slow internet connection and cannot download files reliably. Why? I often have to resort to torrenting, because if a file is large enough (typically over 100 megabytes) Chrome will eventually just hang at 0 B/s and then say "network error", even when the network is working fine.

>>55893295

So I'm using a 6+ year old WiFi card, and its dying. Anyone have recommendations for a replacement? Under $50 please

>>
>>55893334

>>
>>55893261
If you've f'd something up you can always reset firefox and start over
>>
>>55893336
Well if I'm torrenting it won't do that. It's slow as fuck, but it almost never actually just stops working.
>>
>>55893358
is there a dedicated way of "reseting" firefox or is it pretty traditional in you uninstall and reinstall it?

is this normal? according to every reference the preference browser.urlbar.unifiedcomplete is supposed to be a boolean but mine is a string and I don't know how to set a string to "false"

Do most mobos come with built in wifi adapters these days?
>>
>>55893383
not all of them it'll say it specifically on the mobo itself. Most mobo's come with ethernet support
>>
>>55893369
You probably have an internet connection that keeps cutting out briefly. Normal downloads just stop if something interrupts them, even briefly. Many of them can't be started again, but it depends on the server in question and how good your downloader's resume feature is. You can try getting a better 3rd party downloader. Torrents don't care if you stop and start, all the files are in tiny pieces anyway, so you can just pick up wherever you left off like nothing happened

Actually I just learned that the devs of Firefox removed browser.urlbar.unifiedcomplete from it all together

so all my bitching wasn't because of an issue or glitch or problem they just disabled that preference from firefox all together

What's the name of this program, It's like a virtual version of that shit you see in shows where people tie string around tacks to visualize the relationship between things, you could create bubbles full of info and link them together and you'd eventually end up with a huge Web of relationships, I can't for the life of me remember.
