Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread. ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

What do you mean with how many? If they're simple then they would probably work but I've never used wine so I'm not sure.

>>
Ok guys, I've dabbled in Linux before, I use it a work and I'm not scared at all by CLI, I own a dedicaded server\seedbox, etc.

I never installed on my home destkop though and I want to change that.
The reason I stuck with Windows is basically photo editing and (not now, but possibly in the future) video editing.
Now I've got a couple of days to set it all up and I want to use it at home basically to have better integration with my seedbox (for example running rsync scripts, sshfs).

What would you do? Dual boot or install W7 in a virtual machine?
My sistem is extremely low power (AMD A8, 8 GB RAM, 128 GB 840 PRO + a couple of HDD) so I'm not sure a virtual machine will work smoothly.

Your hardware is shit but virtual machines are also not that great. Try dual booting.
>>
>>55878553
Don't install Windows in a VM for photo and video editing, the performance would be too bad. Dual booting would be a better option.
>>
>>55878553
Use different programs for editing. Blender, GIMP, inkscape, krita, cinelarra. This way you can just ditch windows. There is a high chance you will adjust to them sometime anyway so why not do it now?

toss-up whether to ask this in /sqt/ or /flgt/

I have a flash drive that I've used for years to install various Linux images as well as everyday file transfer. Every now and then it gets fucked up because I've messed with the boot record or the partitions and the easiest way to make it Windows-readable again is just to completely format it from Windows.

This time though, Windows isn't recognizing it at all - doesn't show up in explorer, or in the Disk Management graphic tool, or the diskpart command line utility. BUT Linux recognizes it, mounts it, and reads and writes it just fine - so I'm fairly sure the drive isn't dead.

What I have to work with: a little bit fucked up default install of Ubuntu 16.04 (installed it on old computer and then immediately started bootstrapping Arch from it, computer froze, force restarted, it said something about an emergency and dropped me into the Ubuntu root shell and X and the the network appear to be broken but everything else works) and Windows 10.

What I'm trying to do: get the flash drive recognizable by Windows so I can use Windows to install a Linux rescue image on it that has network connectivity so I can keep going with the arch bootstrap.

What I've tried:

$ sgdisk --zap-all /dev/sdf # destroy the GPT and MBR data structures and exit.

result: "Found invalid GPT and valid MBR; converting MBR to GPT format in memory... GPT data structures destroyed! You may now partition the disk using fdisk or other utilities."

$ parted /dev/sdf mklabel msdos # create a new MBR/msdos partition table for BIOS systems
$ parted /dev/sdf mkpart primary fat32 1MiB 100% # create a fat32 primary partition that fills the disk

didn't result in a readable drive in windows though. I also tried again using the --zap flag for sgdisk (delete only GPT, not MBR structures) but no go. I know my windows machine boots with MBR/BIOS, not GPT/UEFI, but idk if that matters on removable media.

Any suggestions?

- remove chromium. realize that all current browsers are trash and install the lesser evil: firefox nightly, tweak your about:config to make it secure

- don't use flash, you don't need it since 90% of the web switched to html5 and opening security holes on your pc for 10% of retarded webdevs isn't worth the hassle

Listen here niga:

There's a huge amount of people who prefer zsh or even fish to bash. There are several reason why they do it:

- They have seen it on a screenfetch and want to be with the cool guys
- They are macfags, too retarded to update their outdated bash and prefer to switch instead
- They actually make use of the interactive improvements

The truth is: 90% of zsh or fish provides can be done with bash if you read the manpage, but the 10% can be useful (for advanced users):

- extended globbing
- autocompleting args, parsed from manpages
- syntax highlighting

This makes sense for oldfags, but oldfags would never try to write a zsh or fish script and here is why: The ZEN of scripting is being portable as fuck, which means, the shell your should write scripts for is /bin/sh. This is why bash is the "babby distro" stage of shell scripting, since it is full POSIX compatible, but with with lots of extensions. The maximum of compatibility you can get with zsh is ksh, fish isn't even POSIX compatible, so the best thing you can do is:

- choose your shell for intertactive use (bash, zsh, fish)
- but script in POSIX compatible sh

On the other hand you could just don't give a fuck about other people and write a fish/zsh script.

About to try Gentoo, but I could use someone to check if I've understood the ISOs correctly.

>"minimal" is the netinst and includes multilib
>"hardened" = "minimal" + extra security
>"no-multilib" is for when you won't be crosscompiling
>"uclibc" is a glibc replacement for embedded linux systems, but is now also considered suitable for amd64 desktops

What I can't seem to find out is this: the uclibc ISO is very small, so does it ONLY contain uclibc and is meant to be used as an addition after Gentoo has been installed? If so - why has it been bundled in with the Gentoo-ISOs like this?

And finally - what is the Admin CD? I found one forum thread where someone "guessed" that it was just the normal install + some extra firmware, but that hardly seems reliable, and I cba comparing the CONTENTS files line-by-line. Spoonfeed me?

People in /bst/ are all gamers, so they run Windows. I've been running Debian stable for a few months now. Overall it's pretty awesome and works well.

Debian Pros:
+ Stability, your primary PC won't explode/crash
+ Popularity (from being the base of Ubuntu, SteamOS, etc), meaning more software is available and support is easier to get
+ Great resources like the Debian Wiki
+ Prioritizes FOSS, while still having proprietary as an equally valid option

Debian Cons:
- Software isn't as new/up-to-date. However, you can use backports to get newer software, or just transition from Debian Stable to Testing or Unstable (which I hear isn't that unstable)
- Non-FOSS (like Chrome, Netflix, Java, drivers, etc.) requires a bit of extra work to install, but this is obviously the case when you choose the FOSS life.

I'm considering trying out Fedora and possibly OpenSUSE just to compare, but I really don't have a reason to stop using Debian. Sorry if I sound like a shill or whatever.

>>
>>55885649
>>Debate is healthy. Good software should be used and supported.
to a certain extent, in the FOSS world competition works way different because if the others do something you can decide to implement it.
the wikis and communities made a lot of lists of good software with short descriptions, this should be more than enough for a decision.
also it takes a few minutes to test out more free stuff. calling software shit that is developed by a community for the general benefit of everyone is not exactly friendly or productive.

I am being friendly. I didn't even call him a faggot or tell him to commit suicide
>>
>>55886991
Here is a friendly reminder that you're in /fglt/.

The f stands for friendly. Thanks!
>>
>>55887014
No, but you called him a f*ckface. That is unfriendly.
>>
>>55887052
but he was being one...?
>>
>>55887052
Playing passive aggressive moderator makes you an infinitely huger tool than anyone calling someone a fuckface.
>>
>>55887065
>...?

If you're going to be unfriendly there are other forums you can visit.

And using Google translate to say something weird in your fictional cartoon girlfriend's native language doesn't make you a tool?

死ねよ奇形児
>>
>>55886764

Calling it "theme toolkit" is beyond retardation.
>>
>>55887132
Its no different than wearing a baseball cap with the logo of something you like, you just read too much into it and project.
>>
>>55887160

Go back to /a/ where you belong. You're so obsessed with your waifu yet you're too lazy to learn her language. You faggots are the fucking worst.
>>
>>55887179
/a/ is full of weeaboos arguing about shitty anime. /g/ used to be a place for people of refined anime taste, but now its just a bunch of pedo furfag brony trash. I understand your sentiments but you are projecting and insecure.

Aww, so cute, you don't have the balls to explain how _you_ think AUR works. Now let's see

>Someone asks how to get an AUR helper working
>"Add a repo XDD"
>Why add repo when you can compile the helper itself
>"lol KISS"
>KISS doesn't tell anything about AUR and adding 3rd party repos
>"lol u don't know how AUR works"
>Go ahead and tell me
>"lol u don't know"
>Tell me
>"lol u don't know how GNU/Linux works"

To think that I have been replying to an underage faggot who just learned how to install Arch and thinks AUR will teach him how GNU/Linux works is quite revolting. Now if you yourself do not know "How AUR works" then get the fuck out, so far you have given 0 (Zero) facts to justify to add a repo to install an AUR package and gone on about bullshit buzzwords like KISS or AUR which you know NOTHING about. Fuck off and don't come back

How do I make gVim menus appear like in Janus? I've been using Janus for a couple weeks and decided to set up my own .vimrc etc, but I can't find for my life where to activate the plugin menus like in Janus. They were so useful, specially since they told you the command to do the actions. Help please.

What am I insecure about? I know Japanese and I'm not a delusional retard that has an imaginary girlfriend. If you want to be respected then take the trip off or fuck off.

What's the best Linux ever?

Void Linux is literally the best Linux distribution at the moment.
>>
>>55887217

Find me a reputable and trusted source which calls them that. Go to the websites and documentation for GTK or Qt. You'll see what it says.

Currently in-order to start my DE I have to login to the console then enter
cd /usr/dt/bin
./dtlogin
every time. I tried making it automatic by adding
startx /usr/dt/bin/dtlogin
to the xinitrc but that didn't work. What do?

Why is it better than xmonad?
