Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread. ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

I just tried updating from ubuntu 14.04 to 16.04. everything seemed to go ok during the upgrade but when it finished it said something like "upgrade failed" and then "the upgrade finished with errors."

I tried restarting my computer, but upon restart no apps or any features of the UI would work (nothing would launch besides the desktop).

I restarted again and now the OS doesn't even launch, I get a black screen that says a short message like "dev/sda2 19241/2109512 blocks..." seemingly referring to my hard drive.

this really sucks, what do I do?

I'm completely new to GNU/Linux and still trying to find out what works for me. To everyone in this thread complaining about their desktop environments:
Hook a window manager straight into x, get rid of your display manager and desktop environment, autologin to virtual console, autostart x, done.
Cut and dry and simple as pie.
I recommend awesomeWM, a dynamic WM which supports as many monitors as you can throw at it and doesn't eat up your CPU on shitty window animations and launchbars.
Get your shit together /fglt/s.

Colors don't stick after configuring .Xdefaults. Already executed terminals have the configured color scheme but now If I open a new terminal the colors are back to a default black text on white.

I have memory of starting libvirt services before the incident occurred. But other than that this just seems out of the blue.

I can settle for a workaround instead of a fix. A way to set these specific colors as a command when starting xterm. I just want my specific color scheme every time I run xterm.

Manjaro is based on archlinux so it should have a package manager named pacman, and you should be able to access the AUR.

Even gentoo that require you to compile things from source provide a package manager.

I just got Manjaro up and running. Very nice. There's this thing called Octopi on it. Kind of reminds me of Synaptic. I can basically search the entire AUR plus other repositories, add them to a basket, and install.

It's also very lightweight. Lubuntu was consuming ~850-950mb of Memory with nothing open. I currently have 2 Firefox tabs open, installing updating 250 packages in Octopi, and installing some icon packs and themes via terminal. Using 705mb memory.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.
Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as GNU/Linux is in fact GNU. Linux is not part of the operating system itself, but is the kernel that is not covered by the naming system of an operating system as defined by common sense.

Many users run operating systems such as Windows, OSX, and a variant of BSD yet do not use a cumbersome naming system that includes the kernel, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, GNU has been the exception to this for no reason and has just been called "Linux" for no good reason, and many others use the insane, cumbersome term "GNU/Linux", mostly because the GNU project doesn't want you to think that Linux is a part of GNU.

There really is a Linux, and it's not part of GNU, but it's a kernel, and no one really specifies using it. GNU is the OS; the actual base system you interact with, and is useful with any compatible kernel; it can function with many different kernels such as GNU Mach or even kFreeBSD, so the whole system should only specify the kernel when it matters, because all these kernels are really irrelevant regarding GNU.

Interesting. Is there also a command that shows a specific range of lines, i.e. 8-17, where 17 is not the last one?
>>
>>55901398
the number you put after head -, is just the number of lines it will print in your terminal, after you curled the website.

for example you can put
 head -40
to output 40 lines, and you get a lot more information
>>
>>55901433
Yeah, that wasn't what I meant. But figured it out.

curl -s wttr.in/bitsch | head -n 17 | tail -n 8

shouldn't the command make it so the terminal is disassociated to firefox and nothing gets printed to stdout? Why isn't it working?
>>
>>55901209
>>55901239
This might be reasonable.
Everyone at the company is new (sort of a startup after a recent merger between several companies) and the manager is currently doing training/bootcamp alongside the employees.
I'm fairly certain I know more than everyone else there.
I'll tell him he should seriously consider letting me use a real Linux box.
Thanks for the encouragement anon.

LOL. I've been through this.
It seems like they should all work but here is the command you're looking for:
firefox & >/dev/null &

Let me know if that works.
>>
>>55901209
Wouldn't that save the company money if you don't need one? Convince him you know what you're doing.
>>
>>55901929
man stderr
>>
>>55901987
Yeah I might ask for the money as opposed to the book, but I'm fairly certain the already bought a huge bundle of them and that they want everyone to be on the same platform. Retarded but understandable.

Yeah, use awesomeWM.
That kind of thing is (i think) usually hardcoded into the WM. Awesome doesn't use them, just a 1 pixel frame for border.
>>
>>55901929
You want: firefox >/dev/null 2>&1 &

Edit your gtkrc/theme.

Xfce. I know you can remove them on maximise but I'm not sure you can remove them outright.
>>
>>55902130
You only need to pipe firefox output. Piping to /dev/null has no output itself. Backgrounding it just gives you the pid. I just want to know what's wrong with my simpler solution. Not sure that you're wrong.
>>
Hey guys, what is currently the best WM out there in terms of looks, stability, and functionality? I don't care about the learning curve.
>>
>>55902128
>how to install pycharm?
Extract somewhere (like /opt or in your home) and run the binary
>>
>>55902197
> redirects only stout, not sterr, hence 2>&1
& puts it into the background, ofc this is only needed for a new instance, if firefox is already open, it will only output the pid like you said
>>
>>55902225
>looks
That's completely up to you.

>stability and functionality
That depends, do you want tiling, stacking, or dynamic (tiling with stacking abilities)?
>>
>>55902423
So most WMs can be riced to look good?

>That depends, do you want tiling, stacking, or dynamic (tiling with stacking abilities)?

I have no idea. I want something that works well and is functional.
>>
>>55902253
thanks family, I assume the binary is the .sh file and I should run it with bash
>>
>>55902448
>So most WMs can be riced to look good?

What does "Look Good" mean? CDE looks amazing to some people. Others, not so much.
>>
>>55902556
Come on, dude. I'm asking what the level of customizability is. Are there some setups on certain WMs that I can't achieve on others?
>>
>>55902448
Most can be riced, but some are harder than others. Like some come with fancy GUI tools that let you set everything while others make you edit config files. Honeslty the best way to figure it out is to try them out yourself;

https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php/GNU/Linux_ricing
>>
>>55902595
Yeah, that link doesn't really tell me anything. Thanks, though.
>>
>>55902589
>>55902448
Using a certain WM/DE won't lock you in, you can check out a few multiple and remove them again.
>>
>>55902595
>that link doesn't really tell me anything
It actually tells you a lot, especially if you're new to WM ricing. If that doesn't help you, I don't know what will. Good luck.

>here are some Window Managers

uh, ok? That's not even close to being a comprehensive resource on ricing. You're like Arch retards that tell everyone to read the wiki for every problem imaginable.
>>
>>55902724
>comprehensive resource on ricing
No such thing. WMs are not all written in the same code, so there is no guide that covers them all at once. No matter, I can already tell you're not going to get very far ricing. Just install Gnome and use Numix. It's easymode, even a simpleton as yourself can make it look good. I don't even use Arch btw so stop with the fucking >implying.

got an old toshiba laptop running lubuntu

not doing anything with it, i can randomly hear it start making noise as if it was working hard for a few secs every once in a while.

it has scared my cat a few times.

is this normal? is there some process that should regularly run in the background that could account for it?

take into account cpu use spikes to 100% when opening sth like htop for example, so it doesn't really mean is doing intensive work, just that something happened
