IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

one the x220/x220t type thinkpads can the slice battery only attach if you have the thin 3 cell battery in the first place?

https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/migr-76758

this thing, do you need the thin battery?

also is this thing designed to be put on and taken off often or is it kinda permanent?

It felt weird getting a laptop that would need an external disc drive and only had USB 3.0. I would end up regretting it.

Thanks, anon.

>>55873890
if you don't think you want it then obviously cancel, but

>would need an external disk drive
most laptops don't have disk drives anymore anon, and that's because CDs and DVDs are not being used as much as before, what do you need to use CDs so much for?

>>
>>55873922
Not separate issues, I make a lot of Blu-rays for work, some of them M-Discs, and as far as I know no laptop has an M-Disc Blu-ray burner so whatever I get I'd need an external. USB 3.0 is just piss slow when burning lots of large discs compared to 3.1 or something overkill like Thundermeme.

>>
>>55878867
You can use an air compressor, or take a small apeture and stick it on the hair dryer on cool air.

>Why? is there some sort of solvent?
Kind of. It's because the bottom contains a CFC due to it's near room temp boiling point. It's slightly flammable and toxic in liquid form, but also takes a lot of heat when evaporating, enough enthalpy to go well below freezing point.

>tfw x220 i5 2540m/9cell/chink 240gb msata ssd/8gb ddr3l reporting in
Decent buy for 175USD (4gb ddr3 to start with), but a year in I had to replace the keyboard because of water damage that I was too stupid to clean. Does anyone here have a X220(t) with i7/USB3.0? W520 is too small and chubby for me. I don't have any firsthand experience with either. Is the E555 really that bad? It would be my every day computer and I need to buy something in the next week. I only play Dota and maybe some small scale emulation, so hopefully whatever I get can handle that. I also do audio editing and work in DAWs. Can you give me any more advice/info? >>55888387
>W520 is too small
It's a 15.6" 16:9 laptop just like the E555, I don't think there's any substantial height/length difference past that. The W520 is built like a tank, so it won't wobble in your lap the way a flimsy consumer laptop would. And it would certainly hold its own better in a tight space like a well-packed backpack than an E555 would, even if it is a bit thicker and heavier. The W520 could be used to beat a man to death and it would come out unscathed.

>I guess it probably wont be a big deal if the performance is actually as good in comparison as you imply.
The weight of the laptop itself is actually surprisingly light. I was expecting it to be much heavier when I got mine, but it turns out the real burden is its 170W charger. That thing is a solid brick, and it's about the size of one, too.

As for performance, the W520's Sandy Bridge quadcore mops the floor with the mediocre APU in the E555. It's not even a contest. The APU might meet your meager gaming needs, but for a main machine and for audio editing work, you'll definitely appreciate having so much more power. The GPU hasn't aged quite as well as the CPU, but it should have the raw power for what you need it to do, if you need it at all. Nvidia Optimus is good about keeping the GPU off when you aren't using it, so battery life is better than you might expect from a machine of its caliber.

Found a deal, worth it?

X220
refurbished
i7 2620
8GB ram
128GB SSD

300 eurobucks

I'm really considering it. I want a laptop to dick around on linux, some minor productive use as well, media consumption in bed. Nothing special, really. Normal x220 with an i5, only 4GB ram and just an HDD usually go for 200, so the price is actually okay in that regard.

Had an endless series of random craigslist thinkpads before I got a macbook air in 2012 for college. In grad school now and picked up a t440s with dock on craigslist for $350; had no idea how bad the clickpad was.

Has anyone done the t450 touchpad upgrade? Does clicking it feel much better? I hate the one I have so much.Hadn't had a thinkpad newer than the Core 2 era so pretty much just typed the word thinkpad into craigslist

those almost always aren't in the 2d desktop, they are in their own thing that is 100% separate from scaling
>movies/word processing
if anyone managed to fuck that up that would be impressive

now go trying some older win32 apps and see how many issues you have in windows.

Scaling is undeniably awful for some programs.

The good news is most of them are shit nobody uses, and you can disable scaling in those programs when you run into them.
>>
>>55892355
So, let me get this right, the proper scaling is broken on shit that matters?
No, it works. This shit blows tablets out of the water and has 0 issues with scaling.

Back to the question, does there happen to be a 1080 screen that works the touch?

E555 vs. W520

Also sidenote, wanted to replace the HDD anyways (it was used heavily for 4 years, would like it for archival purposes).
Should I get a SSD to replace it or get an mSATA SSD and use that slot?
>>
Thinking about getting the e555, can I replace HDD with SSD? Can I use both at the same time or am I limited to one?
>>
>>55893317
yes, why wouldn't you be able to?
>>
>>55893329
I didn't know if there were enough ports to use both. I am new to the laptop meme
>>

you replace the dvd drive with an adapter for it.

neat thanks. any more tips for tricking out my memepad?

I have a T420 and a rMBP.
If you're dead set on a mb, make sure to get the retina.

I would have preferred to save my $1500 from the rMBP and just stayed with my thinkpad.

The wrist rest on the x230t looks horribly uncomfortable, and I don't need the swivel screen or the touch screen in general. But the x230 has a mini-displayport for SOME REASON instead of the full displayport on the x220 and x230t. I'd like to get the improved graphical power of the HD4000 on the ivy bridge processor in the x230, but I need a full physical displayport connector. Whatever I get I'm definitely going to be swapping an x220 keyboard into it, though.

my X220 is running at 45 and Im worried I need to do a repaste now

I'm looking at a T440P for sale, with warranty

- 8GB RAM
- 250GB SSD

Is it worth?

In in the same boat as this guy, going back to school just need a laptop for some application programming.

All research points that thinkpads are what I'm looking for. Can anybody just confirm that I'm correct? A 180$ study refurbished laptop seems nearly too good to be true.
>>
>>55894595
How dafaq did you know we're in the same boat. We are, btw - I'm back to school soon and would like a machine for compsci and other lessons.
>>
Just ordered a W530 for around $500.
First thinkpad.
What advice can you guys give me about having a thinkpad?

Easy,
im your brother
After doing some more looking around, plus the warranty I'm pretty okay with this, and if I'm not then it's only 180$ I lost.

>E555
>better specs than W520
On what planet? Those APUs are trash. Even the A10 gets completely shit on by the 2720qm, and the majority of listings I'm seeing have the pathetic A6 that can barely hold its own against a fucking Core 2 Duo. The only area the E555 might be better in is battery life and even that I'm gonna have to call into question because the W520 has bigger battery options and Nvidia Optimus allows it to be surprisingly efficient.

Memory: 4GB DDR3
Hard drive: 320GB 7200rpm

How worth or true is this ? It is used one and I already read guide for used thinkpad

Y/N ?

The squished keys aren't normal on European keyboards

Must be a Turkish thing.
>>
>>55894999
That's not a standard ANSI
>>
>>55895010
I'd personally say its a little much for a 510, a 520 with 8gigs of ram should be around the same price. Definitely a solid laptop though
>>
>>55895144
that's the problem

to get a sane keyboard I need to replace it. since the whole europe uses this piece of shit

Whoops, thought you meant if they were capable of being bios locked, my bad. You can get around the bios lock though, just look it up, not a big deal. We used to do it all the time back in high school with my CTE teacher's virtualization labs to piss him off.

If you mean taking out the CMOS battery that doesn't work on thinkpads.
