I don't know what the best music player is but I know what features I am looking for in it.

The last reason is basically because the only use I have for a music player is for sports. My workout shorts sometimes don't have pockets (I go for cheap shit), and even when they do have pockets it's awkward to have a dangling cable between your ear and your left pocket.

I don't use my Sansa Clip+ as an MP3 player anymore but I got a lot of use out of it during my most recent year of college when I wanted to record lectures for later listening. The microphone is very useful and the quality is pretty decent.

A lot of phones have solid D/A performance, at least Redbook level. That isn't very hard. It doesn't do much to distinguish audio quality, and doesn't work out to be the most important quality factor.
The amp section is umpteen times more important. This is what fails in most devices.

This, the Sansa Clip is HORRIBLE. I wasted $40 on one only to have it die irreparably on me 4 months later. I said fuck it and bought an $80 LG phone and have been using it ever since. Installed Viper4Android and now it's literally an orgasmic experience.

I work 12 hour shifts where I can listen to music/podcasts the entire shift, if I use my phone it will die. I don't have access to power, a sansa clip is a lot smaller than a power pack or a second phone.

It also doesn't get in the way as much because I have to use my phone pretty regularly.

All this fighting about whether anyone's use cases for still using an MP3 player are valid or not are ridiculous.
