Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread. ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

Hey /g/, I just did a fresh minimal netinstall of Debian without a DE, and something is fucked up. I don't have any basic commands like sudo, ifconfig, etc. and I can't connect to wifi. I've used Debian just fine on my laptop before, but I wanted to do a minimal install and just use i3. Does anyone know how to fix this so I can actually use my laptop?

If you don't have wpa supplicant (run wpa_passphrase to check) you'll need to install it through a deb or source package by copying it from another PC, or you could apt-get install wpasupplicant from an ethernet connection.

You can see your adapter name and addresses with ip link and ip addr respectively

Then you'd run
 wpa_passphrase "yourssid" > /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf

Then run wpa_supplicant, see the example, basically copy that swapping in your config file and whichever of the two driver options work, then when it makes a connection, hit ctrl-z, then type bg to fork it to the background and run "dhclient -i(myinterface)" to obtain an IP address and other info automatically assuming you're using standard DHCP.
>>
>>55844197
Forgot to mention, type your network password after you run wpa_passphrase, it will give you blank nothingness and you enter it, it'll save it to your config file and generate a key from it.
>>
Just installed Lubuntu a few days ago to get better performance on Minecraft out of my old laptop.

What is a good browser that is very responsive and has ad blocking?

Firefox is complete fat shit. Chromium is alright, but whenever I come out of Minecraft, it's so fucking slow and not responsive for like 5 minutes.

I tried QuipZilla and it was supa dupa fast, but it doesn't play videos on my fav porn sites or WorldStar. I click play and it just opens up a download prompt.

>>
>>55844314

It's too slow. Like I lick a link in my IRC client and Firefox wouldn't open. I'd click the link like 10 times and then 2 minutes later Firefox opens with all 10 links. I click the link once with Chromium as default browser, and it opens immediately. But Chromium gets all sluggish like Firefox when I'm in a game. I tried QupZilla and it worked perfectly while in game, but I can't play any porn videos on it.
>>

>I'd click the link like 10 times and then 2 minutes later Firefox opens with all 10 links.
Sounds like your hard drive is choking on read speeds to be honest. This should never happen regardless of the program.
>>
>>55844197
Thanks for the reply.

I tried doing the wpa_supplicant command, but I get "sure permission denied" even though I added my user to the group root and edited /etc/pam.d/sure to include the wheel group. How do I fix this? Sorry for the dumb questions, I want to get pro with Debian
>>
>>55844400
> even though I added my user to the group root and edited /etc/pam.d/sure to include the wheel group

The latter is done for for sudo, which is pointless in your case. Reverse your changes, giving your user root privileges is a massive security risk.

Type "su" and enter the root password. It will open a shell instance as root user. Then press control-D or type exit to drop back to the previous instance once you're finished with what you need to do. Personally I don't use sudo at all, but I only run linux as a headless server.

Greetings, I couldn't find a stupid questions thread, so pardon me if my ignorance wastes your time. I am attempting to install Debian, however it is not liking my graphics card. I will skip past the tale of the past few hours of headaches it has given me as I attempted one approach of installing the drivers, however I have recently found the .run file Nvidia has on their website.

I have been following this piece of documentation: http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/367.35/README/installdriver.html and it seems to be that I need to disable the X server before executing the .run file. On stackexchange, they say I can do this by exiting graphic mode with alt+ctrl+F1, however this just turns the screen black and doesn't provide me with a terminal (as they say it should... unless I am misunderstanding). How should I go about installing these drivers? My monitor won't even recognize my resolution settings at the OS's current configuration, forcing me to do all of this from an old projector.

Also, any information regarding blacklisting the "nouveau" kernel after the driver installation would be nice (as I think I messed this up, along with the xorg.conf earlier, causing me to not be able to boot into the OS and prompting me to start the installation over).

Thank you very much.

dear /fglt/,
i'm having some serious trouble installing Mint (to dual-boot with windows 8.1).

After fixing my initial problem of not being able to boot by editing the GRUB options for the USB i originally booted from, i managed to install Mint to a separate, empty partition on a hard drive where some stuff (but not W8) is stored on.
Now when i try to boot from the Hard Drive, almost immediately Windows repair starts. Someone suggested to me that i change boot setting from UEFI to Legacy priority/only Legacy, but that did not change anything.

In any of these steps i could've made a mistake since i am not experienced and sometimes pretty dumb.

What would you suggest for me to do next? Where could i have made a mistake?
>>
>>55844005
Next time don't use a root password in the installer so you have sudo preconfigured. You could have installed nm in the expert installer too. Or used ethernet.
>>

I would recommend you to fix your mbr through windows live but since you are new just backup from a live mint usb and redo the windows and mint install, that takes more time but is easier and will let you fix prior mistakes.

From a TXT file I saved off some instructions I found online detailing the entire procedure of installing the proprietary nvidia drivers on a debian system:

>1. Download correct drivers for your GFX-card and place the in your own directory (/home/[USERNAME]) for easier access later.

>2. Open the black list module as admin with a terminal:

>gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

>3. Add these lines to your blacklist.conf

blacklist vga16fb
blacklist nouveau
blacklist rivafb
blacklist nvidiafb
blacklist rivatv

>4. Uninstall all previous nVidia drivers and stuff

>sudo apt-get --purge remove nvidia-*

>5. Now reboot or press CTRL+ALT+F1 (Console mode will appear, login with username and password)

>6. If you pressed the key-combo, you need to stop the desktop manager

>sudo service gdm stop (If GDM is your desktop manager)

>7. If you placed the drivers in your own directory (/home/[USERNAME]), you are ready to go.

>sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-**.**.**.run <- Type just a capital N and press Tab, The console should autocomplete the name for you :D

>8. Follow all instructions and when asked if the install should do an auto-config of the X-settings, select 'Yes'.

>9. Install complete, reboot.

>10. 'You're ready to rock n' roll!'

>Hopefully, this could help you.

I'm not incapable of setting things up myself, I just don't see the point of not using the more time-efficient distro. Thing is, the more time efficient distro is bloated. I remember doing a Lubuntu install once to discover that the software center doesn't even work or have essentials like Libreoffice - still have to do terminal install. Like what?
>mediachance dvdlab
I'm asking here because I'm on linux.
>DivX support
Yeah it got it, as well as MP4, MP3.
So what parameters should I be using in ffmpeg? or should I simply use
ffmpeg -i video.mkv video.avi
>>
>>55849171
>Like what?
ffmpeg has DVD presets, you can also research what DVD supports and stick to that
for example;
ffmpeg -i input.mkv -target pal-dvd output.mpg

will produce a pal dvd complaint mpeg file, you can override anything by adding options after it

i've used dvdlab in wine before, if you don't care about making menus, you could try "dvdauthor"

as for divx options, look up which divx profile your player supports, then look up how that profile is defined, or look for a guide

Hello all. I have to dual boot W10 and some Linux distro [preferably Xubuntu, since I was using that and was comfortable with it]. I need Windows for some work related stuff that I found no adequate replacement in Linux environment[s].

My problem is that when I try to make a dual boot, the installer doesn't recognize the Windows partition and shows it as un-allocated space. Solutions I stumbled upon googling didn't work.

Can you point me in the right direction, where to look? Thanks.

not sure what you're referring to
if you mean having a video loop on its own, that can be done with dvd, how to do it depends on your authoring software

I have a quick question for you guys.

I do not know if you are familiar with the facebook site called Linux Insider, but if you do then is it worth following?

I looked it up and I find it very normie friendly, but all of them are intentionally I believe to lure Windows users.

I am looking for pages that "work" with the news around all distros and such, so that's why I am interested.

OMG!Ubuntu is decent enough but lately all posts are about themes and fonts.

I've got two screens connected to my desktop, a 24" through dvi and a 42" through hdmi. Mostly it's not on unless I want to watch a video or something.

Last night i fell asleep with it on, and woke up and it had turned off due to inactivity of course. But when I go to turn it back on today, it can't seem to find a signal from the desktop, even if I explicitly configure it in nvidia-settings.

MATE isn't a distribution. It's a desktop environment. A distribution can look any way you want it. Only an idiot chooses a distribution based on its looks. Fast is a subjective buzzword. Any program will run the same, no matter what your distribution is (assuming it's built with the same options).

They're all decent in their own way. Don't go gnome if you want a standard experience where you can customize stuff, don't go kde if you don't want to tweak your DE at all, don't go cinnamon if you don't want a slightly buggy DE that just acts like gnome2 on the gtk3 libraries, don't go for mate if you don't want gnome 2 and don't go lxde if you don't want a very lightweight fully functional DE (downside is it's just openbox with a panel and a few things to get polkit and stuff working).

I noticed that programs can take "full control" of a sound device and keep other programs from outputting audio on that channel.

Examples: If I play flash on chromium (runs more smoothly), flash on firefox will not be able to play sound; if I'm in Discord, I get no audio in most Steam games, but they work fine if I quit Discord.

I'm also confused about Pulse and ALSA. I read that Pulse is just an additional layer on top of ALSA. In my utter newness I installed most of those things, including the lib32-alsa-plugins package and more, because the wiki states it's necessary for Steam.

if you have a little experience with C, then getting some old UNIX programmer's manual can do wonders for getting to know the file system/inner workings of your operating system
also start writing some shells scripts eg. for automatically checking wether your current anime has a new episode today and if it does make it download it right away.

Programming with the stuff is a really good way into Unix, at least if you are familiar with the concept of programming already.

holy shit why can't I get my Japanese porn games running on Wine
I've already created a 32-bit wineprefix and run apps in Wine through a Japanese locale

The 32-bit wineprefix breaks things that worked under a 64-bit wineprefix. Stuff crashes fairly indiscriminately, usually related to gstreamer missing plugin errors which I probably can't fix due to not knowing enough about multilib installations.

I tried setting up a Windows 7 VM in Virtualbox earlier but that was even worse. Godawful performance and things that needed DirectX wouldn't start.

Anyone have experience with this? Eroge/visual novels usually run fairly well under Wine unless they have an installer, which will typically crash without errors or logging info. Anything action-oriented and the majority of RPGMaker titles are unplayable.

I was going to limit it to 1gb before it cycles out, but iu was curious if this will damage the cells
>>
>>55856854
I've only tried eroge, but with wine most work with a 32bit wineprefix after a lot of work. Depending on the age, you could run them in a Windows XP VM.

Also try qemu. I couldn't get sound working on Windows hosts, but I hear you get better performance.

Xfwm CANNOT support it. Even if it was in active development, they have to find a way to scale PNG and XBM files without any blurring problems.

How is "Fedora" for someone who was never used a Linux distro before?

I am going to make the complete switch to Linux and I don't know which distro to choose. I have heard Ubuntu and elementary OS thrown around, but the book I am reading recommends Fedora.
>>
>>55857279
Not my cup of tea but hey, try it out, see if you like it.

If you don't like it, try Ubuntu (absolute beginner mode) or Debian (intermediate, or beginner that isn't afraid to get his hands a bit dirty while learning)

I haven't had a game worth playing since TW3, but for some reason I feel glued to Windows. I don't know how I can absolve this faulty thinking, but every time I've installed something like Ubuntu, it's had immediate red flags.

One of my favourites was text distortion on the install media. Like what the fuck, how does one corrupt a fucking font pack?

How frustrating I feel like I can't rely on a Linux system.

Just try Debian senpai.

hello. this is how i connect to wifi with a net install.

use "su" to go supersaiyan

su
vi /etc/network/interfaces
you don't have to use vi you can use nano or whatever

add into the interfaces file

iface wlan0 inet dhcp
wpa-ssid (PUT YOUR NETWORK NAME HERE AND ENCLOSE IT IN PARANTHESESEss IF THERES ANY WHITESPACE)
wpa-psk (PUT YOUR NETWORK PASSWORD HERE)

does that make scents. it is the easiest way.

when you have put that junk in your trunk, run

ifup wlan0

to connect to the internet.

It's a meme but it's true. Gentoo is a wonderful distribution.

What is the correct mv command for the following files in an unsorted directory.

mv [Underwater-FFF]* 'new directory' isn't moving the files.

There are other mkvs so *.mkv won't work.

is it mv \[Underwater-FFF\]* 'new directory'

Can someone please explain this to me? Just moved to linux and I'm still trying to understand some commands and how they work.

So I wanted to delete all files with a certain name in my home directory (and all subfolders).

My initial thought was that I would use
grep -r "filename" | rm -rf
But that didn't work.
Then I looked it up and the correct way to do it is
 find . -name "filename" -exec rm -f {} \;

I understand everything up to the -exec. Would really appreciate someone explaining what these modifers mean and what they do.

I am in the process of installing Ubuntu

I booted from a USB and selected the option of Trying Ubuntu before Installing

From there I chose the option to install Ubuntu. The installer opened but I got to a screen that asked about installing third party software and when I hit continue the mouse pointer turned to a loading icon and nothing has happened since then (more than 25 minutes ago).

The computer isn't frozen or anything, I can still use other programs just fine, but the Installer has not progressed at all.

Can you think of a reason this would be happening or does installation just take a very long time?
