Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread. ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

On top of every shell script, define the shell you want to run it in. Mostly you want bash.

#!/usr/bin/env bash

If you're programming POSIX and want to use a faster shell for your script, use plain sh.

#!/bin/sh

Some bashisms aren't supported here.

I've been dual-booting for a while and it kinda sucks. I like Linux and am thinking of deleting Windows, but I'm quite scared. I find I often have little inconveniences in Linux (I've used Arch and Ubuntu) that just piss me off and push me back to using Windows. For example, in my current installation of Ubuntu 16.04, if I close my laptop, when I open it again and log in, there's no mouse cursor!

Windows has its share of annoyances too, such as randomly disabling my NIC card, which never happens on linux.

I guess I'm pretty torn on which to keep; I don't really want to keep both anymore, but I'm scared to give Windows the boot since I won't be able to get it back. My recovery partition does not work, and I can't back it up since it's seriously like 50 gigs. What do you guys think I should do?
>>
>>55838679
Please tell me you're using bash as your shell
>>
>>55838737
>there's no mouse cursor!
That's a known bug. Try running this in the terminal and check if it helps.

$ gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.cursor active false
>>
>>55838790
It doesn't matter. Even if he's using zsh, the shebang tells bash to run it.
>>
>>55838737
So, what you'd do if Windows fucks itself?
If you have no way to recover your Windows you're treating on very thin ice already.

What output/error(s) do you receive when you try to run the script?
>>

>>
>>55838872
Tried it. Got same error I received when I wrote in ./name_of_script

>>55838899
Kek, I was just about to type in the output error and then you posted this.

Output error is:
"./run_xmage.sh: 9: ./run_xmage.sh: java: not found"

Which, I think, means there's something wrong with the script itself, which blows.

God, I'm such a scrub.
>>
>>55838812
It didn't help. I'm using Xubuntu btw. Although I'm not too concerned with this because if I do decide to stop dualbooting I don't think I'd stick with ubuntu.

I tried with i3 (alt+number, to change workspaces, in this case), openbox and xfce

Also I'll explain the problem in greater detail
What doesn't work, specifically, is Chocolate Doom and D1X Rebirth
Chocolate Doom's resolution is not very configurable
To set it at a 16:9 resolution I have to put it in fullscreen, and it will ignore keyboard shortcuts
If I make it windowed and use i3's alt+f to make it pseudo-fullscreen, it will look like pic related
D1X Rebirth is a much smaller problem. I can set my resolution and pseudo-fullscreen just fine, but when I start the game and it captures the mouse pointer, I can't use any of my shortcuts anymore. I can pause the game and then use my shortcuts, but for example, if the game hangs, I can't use my xkill shortcut

What do you use for compton? There is a very descriptive config file when searching for xfce on google. I used to have it, but I switched things around to this:

Speaking of compton, recently added to my configs:

# compton: transparency ++
"compton-trans -c +5%"
Mod4 + t

# compton: transparency --
"compton-trans -c -5%"
Mod4 + Shift + t

compton-trans usually comes with compton included, the config is for xbindkeys, mod4 = super key (manufractors accidently put the windows logo here), maybe someone has fun with it

Compile it yourself. It's basically
git clone <ppsspp git link>
cd ppsspp/
mkdir build
cd build
cmake ..
make -j<number of threads>

It should produce the finished product.

Then add a little script like
cd /path/to/ppsspp/build/
./PPSSPPSDL

on the path that has your scripts to access it from anywhere.

Arch has you build your own system (except for pacstrap) but makes things rather straightforward and simple.
>keep it simple, stupid.
Also it has a friendly and rather large community with pretty good sized repositories.

Debian's documentation isn't end-user friendly (for the most part) but there is equal opportunity for configuration and learning.

I like setting up my system without a graphical installer so that I know almost all of the configuration already, by the time I get an X display running.

>>55841454
Debian Stable is mostly used for servers. It's rock solid stable, but the software tends to be pretty old, so sometimes it can be annoying if you demand certain features that you know a program has but that were not included in the Stable release

Doing a net install of Debian and then upgrading it to the Testing branch enables you to have a pretty stable system and also pretty up-to-date software

If you want to really kick in high gear and go bleeding edge, then upgrade it to Unstable (Sid). It's still very stable by Debian's standards. But you probably only want to do this if you're a software developer or actively want to help out with bug reporting and all that.

So Testing's a good sweet spot for normal desktop users.

I started using a linux distro 3 days ago.

The tools thats been the hardest for me to use is Vim as a text editor for programming.

>>
>>55842052
I used to use funtoo. It's not a pain at all, it makes you learn a lot and I loved the freedom of the USE flags and being able to patch things as needed. I did notice performance improvements too. When there's not some kind of upstream bug it is solid and very stable. I only moved away from it because I don't really have the time for it and I live in the tropics so compiling on a core2 laptop in 30+ degree heat isn't great. I'd definitely recommend it though.
>>
>>55842014
>>55841995
>Question is, is there any advantage for sticking with vim? or should I just switch to eclipse?
Stick with Vim. I'm not saying this because I think it's specifically something you should know. I'm saying this because you ought to not give up on learning things like it. If you're hoping to learn to hold your weight in Linux, as a programmer, or whatever your aspirations are, you should see this one through. It's a small step, but it will give you confidence to overcome trickier things in the future.

(Also FWIW, Vim and Eclipse don't really make sense to compare. Eclipse is an IDE and Vim is an in-terminal text editor. When it comes to learning tools, you should be comfortable using at least one of the major Unix editors.)

>I mean, will staying with vim make me a better programmer in the long term?
Not on it's own, no, not at all. But if you learn to use it, it might give you confidence, like I said before. If you give up now to do what's easy, you're likely going to give up on a whole lot of other things down the road; what's the point of trying to learn something new if you avoid actually learning anything new?

Good luck.

A sleeping computer wakes up fast and restores your session, but the session is lost in case of a power outage or whatever
A hibernated computer doesn't boot as fast but it restores your session just the same
With hybrid sleep you have sleep with a hibernation fallback, best of both worlds I guess
>>
>>55842171
Can I use hybrid-sleep if I dual-boot and enter the other OS?
>>
>>55842191
Eh, it depends
If your computer is sleeping, it will just wake up on the sleeping system
If it is hibernated, it will boot like normal and show you grub
I guess you could probably unplug your hybrid-sleeping computer from the wall and then back on, to force it to fallback to hibernation, but that somewhat seems like a bad idea

tl;dr If you want to switch between systems without losing your session, just go with hibernation

My advice is: if you really wanna learn the hard way and go through all the bumps of distro-hopping for ages and ricing and all that shit, then have a separate /home partition. There. Now you can distro-hop for days on end, and eventually you will realize there's 0 point to that.

If you can take advice from people that have gone down that path: just stick to Debian. Really. Upgrade it to testing, or to sid if you wanna feel a bit more haxxor. But there's really no need for anything more in most cases.

wait, you can save to docx in abiword can't you...
Question still stands, though.

Anything better than Abiword? Formatting options seem a little shit.

There's a convoluted way to save tex files to docx, if I remember right. That would be my choice.

I guess killing myself would be suboptimal, so let's see if there's something more interesting.

Poor man's remote mpv.

xbindkeys:
# mpv: play/pause
"printf 'cycle pause\n' > /tmp/mpv.fifo"
Mod4 + Alt + Pause

# mpv: prev
"printf 'playlist_prev\n' > /tmp/mpv.fifo"
Mod4 + Alt + Prior

# mpv: next
"printf 'playlist_next\n' > /tmp/mpv.fifo"
Mod4 + Alt + Next

# mpv: seek --
"printf 'seek -5\n' > /tmp/mpv.fifo"
Mod4 + Alt + Shift + Prior

# mpv: seek ++
"printf 'seek +5\n' > /tmp/mpv.fifo"
Mod4 + Alt + Shift + Next

mpv itself is hooked using a function in ~/.bashrc:

mpv() {
local file="/tmp/mpv.fifo"

if [ ! -p "$file" ]; then
mkfifo "$file"
fi

command mpv --input-file="$file" "$@"
}

Are there any disadvantages to running Ubuntu on a VM rather than dual booting?

VMs are generally laggy and there's no point in partitioning anything... and therefor not a real experience.

Whenever someone suggests running Linux in a VM to a first-timer, as opposed to a liveUSB or something like that, I kind of imagine Tux going:

The Linux Tux penguin mascot is really lame desu.
Why doesn't Linux adopt a cute 2D girl as their new mascot like AMD has? I guarantee it'd drive tonnes more people to adopt Linux as their OS.

How does RMS feel about running Windows under a KVM?
>>
>>55843640
question.

I only have one dedicated GPU. If I successfuly execute the passthrough to get that GPU to work for my virtual machine of Windows inside Linux, can I easily tell the GPU to feed back into my linux machine itself if, say, I want to run some games natively there (and not have to use the integrated graphics from the CPU?)

Not for Linus. He has to choose between proprietary kernel blobs and true freedom. It's why people like RMS and the FSF don't endorse non-libre kernels, he sacrifices true freedom for convenience with drivers. The mainline kernel is not free as in freedom, it's free as in beer.

Not sure how it works together with Compton, and you need to do it every time after starting X. It used to be in Xorg.conf, but the latest driver update caused problems with some screens staying black until you switched your tty and back, which is annoying, so I put it into a script i run after starting X.
