Daily reminder that the only good android phones are the 6P, the S7, and the HTC10 and even the android flagships can't match the level of refinement that Apple offers. Once the 2018 iPhone comes out with OLED and a return to glorious glass design it'll be over once and for all.

I have found two moto G phones and a samsung s7 that could work. Do you guys have any suggestions for android phones for a podcast addict?

Pretty much any flagship or mid end phone meets these criteria.
>>
I'm looking for unlocked phone for around $350. I'm in the US
>>
>>55840413
Your criteria apply to almost anything, at this point you can roll a dice. If dubs, you buy a used Galaxy S1.
>>
>>55840413
If you're looking for a budget phone the Nexus 5x fits all of that IIRC

Alright. I did answer my own question.

I want to help my mom with finding a less lemon phone. She's not lucky with her phone purchases. Bumping her iPhone into an open container of soda was her latest mishap.

Despite that, thank you for the feedback and the confidence.

You're comparing flash storage to an SD card, not a relevant comparison.

Well you can get a xperia z1c for $200~ I can't remember if it is a 2013 or 2014 phone. I have one, still using it.
>>
>>55840689
You mean the ability to now use external DAC's and not be locked in to whatever quality DAC they put in the phone as an afterthought? An adapter is included and when attached to headphones it'll be just the same as before.

>but I can't charge and listen at the same time

A pretty rare scenario and I'd give this up any day to have access to external DACs and another speaker.

What are you smoking? Listening to and charging your phone happen simultaneously pretty often and you can get an external dac and adapter for literally any phone as is.

And don't even bring up front facing speakers. Nobody has yet to make an implementation that isn't ugly.

>>
>>55841070
Because the next generation of Nexus devices are about to launch in ~2 months, therefore the 6P/5X should be going on sale to a permanent ~350-399 (for the 6p).
It's a really solid device, and you'll get android N and O at the very least. On top of a pretty solid camera, great design, stock android... I mean it's the definitive android device right now. If it had a microsd slot it would be perfection imo.

>>
>>55843039
No real reason, just a lot of anonymous opinions
>>
>>55843039
Camera isn't quite Samsung S7 good (night/low light sucks), Chink and locked bootloader so support down the line might be iffy. Battery could be bigger. Supposedly the speakers aren't as good as others, but who the fuck uses their phones speakers to play music?

None of those are deal breakers, unlike the fucking 1+3's lack of a SD card, or the S7/top tier phone pricetags.

If this helps anyone else out:

Mini review of 5x

Pros:
>still the cheapest bang for your buck outright phone in Canada
>camera and bloat free Android is great
>constant Google updates fix """"any problems"""" monthly
>good phone size for one handed use
>videos and text look great
>charging is good / 1-2 hours full 100% if you DON'T use the phone while charging
>upon fresh reboot, phone is the fastest device I've ever held
If rooted:
>easy to root / Pure Nexus ROM + Ex Kernel made my device faster and last longer battery wise
>no reboots necessary, always runs great

Cons:
>overpriced in Canada. Find a friend in the US to buy it for you. I made the mistake to buy it full price at $499, 32GB
>battery does 4hrs SOT tops
>gets hot as fuck. Slows down if it gets passed 45 degrees C.
>plastic build makes it feel cheap as fuck. Again, get this for the ~$250 US price tag to justify
If rooted:
>battery is still 4hrs SOT
>phone stays WAY cooler, no heat issues

tl;dr I love it, esp coming from the 5 and didn't want to cash out $700. If in Canada, do NOT buy full retail price from the Google Canada Store. Go for a Newegg or some type of reputable retailer that will sell it to you for the US prices

i have an s3 right now and it's perfect, so i just want a faster s3 with a snapdragon, since cyanogenmod seems to run well on those, according to people.

so i need an amoled screen, bigger than 5", physical buttons (like the s3), and at least one good custom rom. cm13 would be nice but i would be asking too much apparently.

so the only phones that have all this are the galaxy s4, s5 and the oneplus 3. not the oneplus x because i want to press, not touch, the home button.

i mean the oneplus 3 would be more future-proof, but the s5 is cheaper and has official cyanogenmod support

People complain about TouchWiz not because it's ugly, but because it fucking lags no matter what hardware you use. Stock ROM does hamper performance as well, ram management being the prime example. Custom kernels provide very real performance improvements reflected by benchmarks. All of this applies is the OEM is not a huge faggot and releases the sources.
>>
I don't get this mSD slot obsession.

What on earth would you wantto store on a phone that's over 64 gigs?
I stream all my music from Spotify, most of my library and podcasts fit on even downloaded with a bajillion apps and like 10 gigs worth of movies and Photos that are uploaded every night and I still have room to spare.

What do you guys use a 256gig mSD slot for that's actually pretty slow?

OPO.

The only thing G4 is better at, is the camera. It's really great. If the camera is your top priority, buy it, but the rest will be mediocre at best.

I've mentioned few times here how faulty G4 is and how bad decision of mine it was to buy it. I fell for muh removable battery meme and now I regret it. I haven't swapped battery in this phone even once, even though I bought additional one at the start, and I was on several all-day trips.

SD 808 on 2K resolution works bad. The phone overheats easily and it's actual performance isn't really better than SD 801 (the one in OPO) on 1080p. So in terms of performance, the only thing that G4 is better on paper, G4 is not better.

As >>55844066 said, OPO gives you a lot more. If you don't need the best camera for this price, avoid G4, because it's poorly built device with lots of minor software bugs.

>>55844926
I bought it a few days ago. It's ridiculously fast and powerful compared to anything else I used in the past. You can multitask like a boss and it keeps like 10 apps in memory no problem, including huge shitty optimized games like Asphalt (for a while, not forever, but I guess this has to do with how the apps are coded). You can for example easily multitask with many tabs open in firefox and jump to WhatsApp to inform your mom that she has to buy you dinner by holding a key (the nav key are customizable), none of your tabs are going to reload. I think the 6Gb of ram are going to make it very future proof considering how heavy apps and webpages are getting, the lack of ram is why older devices with 1Gb which were perfectly usable back then are slow as fuck nowdays.

The raw power is the main reason why I got it.

The camera is also impressive (I can post samples), but the video recorder is bugged and mostly pretty bad. For some reason OIS doesn't work in 1080p recording but it works in 4K, sound is also shitty because the noise reduction is buggy. There are a few minor bugs in the OS as well, and some features feel incomplete (music player and camera interface come to mind). Other than that the OS is basically stock MM with some addition which are all pretty useful and handy. Being nearly stock, it uses the shitty google apps such as Music, Gallery, the dialer and phonebook which are complete garbage, Messenger, etc. Most of these are replaceable with third party (Poweramp) or I just deal with it (the shitty dialer, not that I have many people to call). My previous phone (sony Z3) had beautiful stock apps and I really miss them.

Battery life is good for moderate use (lasts about 5 hours with my kind of usage, my Z3, lasted 30-45 minutes more but I managed the battery using Sony's Stamina a lot, this one just has the android power saver which kills the user experience).

Overall I don't think there is anything better for 400€.
>>
So genuinely curious, why do you guys hate on the s7 edge?

I recently got the HTC 10 primarily due to the more robust looking build quality and dedicated AMP/DAC built into the phone.

But considering the amount of features the s7 edge packs I would have easily considered it were it to have equivalent audio quality.

So far loving the HTC 10 for daily use, but then I look at all the features the s7 edge has and just wonder whether I would have been better off with it instead.
>>
>>55846453
Which features interest you about the S7 Edge?
>>
>>55846325

The main cons:

- they look nice but build quality is hit and miss. Even top of the line devices are made of creaky plastic, but that's not too bad, as creaky plastic usually absorbs hits better making Lumias more durable. (thicker plastic phones are usually more resistant to damage)

- the OS is a problem. It's literally never finished. You never get the best apps. It tends to be buggy, even if fixes are always out.

Lumias are excellent phones for people that just want to use them as phones with a camera and an internet browser. Anything else and they start to be annoying with their poorly developed apps.

Gimmicks.
>>
>>55846546
Such as? The only real gimmick that I would love on my OP3 from the S7 is the one-handed mode because I'm a literal manlet.
>>
>>55846470
>More water resistant
>AMOLED screen
>Wireless charging
>Having GearVR as an option
>Camera shots looking sharper despite the less natural color (not a deal breaker though, HTC10 camera looks fine)
>slightly Larger battery capacity, not sure how exynos model s7 edge and HTC10 compare power efficiency and performance wise.
>Some software features like split screen.

My biggest gripe based on reviews with s7 besides audio is the glass back and the tactile home button which is more prone to failure.

Slap it in a good protective case though and it should fare fine I reckon.
>>
>>55846587
Water resistance is a gimmick and it doesn't last forever. I killed my Z1C because the water resistance failed and water came in through some hole somewhere in the frame that developed with age. It sounds cool but you most likely won't ever get it wet. I'm not even sure if Samsung covers water damage under warranty. I know Sony did in certain cases but doesn't anymore and doesn't recommend submerging the phone.
>>AMOLED screen
The screen on the S7 is actually pretty impressive.
>>Wireless charging
I think it's a useless gimmick, also you need a separate thingy to wireless charge and it's kinda slow.
>>Having GearVR as an option
Strapping your phone to your face is the epitome of gimmickry.
>>Camera shots looking sharper despite the less natural color (not a deal breaker though, HTC10 camera looks fine)
The difference between these flagships is negligible and barely noticeable even when looking at samples fully zoomed in side to side. You can't really go wrong with any of these including the Huawei or the OP3.
>>slightly Larger battery capacity, not sure how exynos model s7 edge and HTC10 compare power efficiency and performance wise.
For once Samsung has good battery life. The battery is non replaceable and the phone is impossible to open so you can't replace it in any way without destroying your phone in the process.
>>Some software features like split screen.
Split screen is coming to everyone with Nougat.

Overall pretty much all the top flagships are nearly perfect, so just buy the S7 if you really like it and can afford it.

>Water resistance is a gimmick and it doesn't last forever.

Eh not really
you just have to understand how it works: water resistance on the S7 means that each port has a little rubber seal around the gaps, and the speakers have a mesh that helps stop water.

That's it. You can replicate the same "resistance" with a tight build. Iphones fail if you splash water on them because they're built like shit. Moto G's (first gen) are notoriously water resistant just through tight build alone.

For me, all a phone has to survive is the possibility of having a glass of water dropped on a table, and the water reaching it. That's the worst scenario you can get through bad luck. Most phones will easily survive that.
>>
Anyone know what's the best phone camera out on the market currently
>>
Opinions on 3rd gen Moto G?

Poor eurofag here and need something decent under 130-150EUR

>>
>>55846721
Water resistance is accomplished by water resistant glue under the glass and goretex or something like that under the speaker grills which are also glued. If the glue fails at any point water will get in. On my z1 I think the camera glass somehow lost its glue and some water got in. That was literally the only time I submerged, but it always resisted washing under tap water. Honestly water proofness seems like it gives a false sense of protection. Just never get your phone too close to water or you will regret it.

Already bought the HTC10, I will stick with it since I will be mostly using my phone listening to music on relatively decent headphones.

The SLCD-5 display on HTC10 looks fairly sharp and vibrant as is when used indoors, haven't tried it outdoors yet. I don't know how much of a difference in quality I will perceive if I go for the s7's AMOLED.

Not sure how AMOLED fares for longevity these days either which is very important to me, I've heard so much about the dreaded burn in which is a non existent issue on LCD screens.

I don't buy phones on a regular basis, thought I'd splurge and try a flagship model for the first time after my last phone broke. Hope this one lasts

First time going for HTC as well, digging the blinkfeed with RSS and close to bare bones setup.

Moto G3 is for you then. It has very basic processor, but with 2 GB RAM and clean Android, it's enough to perform smoothly. It's well-built, waterproof and has very good camera for its price. I can't think of a better phone that wouldn't be more expensive.
>>
>>55847498
There are two 2015 Moto X phones. The Play, which has similar specs to G4, and I'd pick G4 over it, because G4 is newer and will be supported by Motorola. Play won't.

And there's the X Style/Pure, which is much better at literally everything than Moto G4. If you meant that phone, I have no idea what the fuck are you talking about.
>>
>>55847498
It's a bit of a hard choice
G4 is better on paper, but I don't like the build and I hear about overheating issues
the X Play has no overheating issues that I know of and it looks better built, but future support is a bit of a gamble.

It certainly does. IMHO Xiaomi fucked up the Redmi Pro completely.
Useless dual cam instead of one good cam, no SD652 variant, some dubious chink OLED, no dev support, locked and iClone OS, still no LTE 800 and all this will cost you at least 300.
If chink resellers will go full Mao Zedong mode and want 350 for it, you might as well buy the Alcatel Idol 4S or get the RN3P which costs half but has only 20-25% less raw power on paper.

I did. Though it was a backward ass way to get it done. You need to unlock bootloader, install twrp, and then use a backup of said from and restore it within twrp as opposed to just installed the ROM fresh. If you try to install fresh from 6.0, it's just bootloop city.

I ended up just saying fuck it because the problem I had with 6.0 was a bug that was affecting nova launchers animations, but nova launcher provided a root workaround to fix the issue. Everything is perfect now.

How's the performance? Does it lag, stutter and/or overheat sometimes? I'm thinking of buying it, but those complains of overheating hold me up.

Hey /g/ my S7 has frozen and it doesn't do anything now.

Press and hold "Power", "Home" and "Volume Up" button simultaneously for few seconds until you see a warning message on the screen.
Press Volume Up button to enter recovery mode, if asked.
In this Galaxy S7 recovery mode you can factory reset, wipe data, wipe Dalvik cache and wipe cache partition easily.
Use volume up/down to navigate and press home button to select the option.

If it doesn’t happen, simply press and hold the Power button and the Volume Down key at the same time for about 7-8 seconds.

Looking for a new phone to replace my LG G2, have had my eye on the Zenphone 3, but Asus has yet to give a U.S. release date, and i'm not sure what else is out there.

Here's my criteria-
>Max at $300, may go over 50~100 if need be
>Powerful CPU (I emulate via RetroArch, and from what I understand, emulation is more CPU-intensive than GPU
>Low input lag if possible (I plan on having my DS4 hooked up to it via micro USB cable)
>Good GPU for regular droid vidya
>Good camera
>Good battery
>Micro SD expansion
>Good support for custom ROMs (It's been a while since I've dabbed into this)

>Dash Charging is one of the key features of OnePlus 3 highlighted during the launch. We were mighty impressed by the Dash charging technology during our review. The technology used helps the OnePlus 3 go from 0 to 60 percent of battery charge in 30 minutes. After going through the code and making the first custom ROM, the developers realised that code for Dash charging was not present. This left all the custom ROMs and custom kernels without supporting the technology.

I'd rather not root, but has anyone played around with root with the OP3?

Also, because of quick charging being linked to the given adaptor, what happens if you use a power bank with the OP3? Will it still 'distribute heat' or will it get hot like normal usb c devices / nexus 5x?

What's the best 5" phone to buy off contract these days? Is the Redmi 3x a good one? Basically I'm looking for a Oneplus X, but more recent.

I have the Galaxy S7 (SM-G930P) from sprint, but i'm not currently living in the USA and i don't get the updates (plus the hands free activation doesn't work) can i update to the latest version (G930PVPS2APG1) using the sammobile firmware while keeping the phone unlocked to work in my country?

Also, if i update and i have problems, can i go back to the previous version to fix it?

>>

Battery is shit, DashChargeâ„¢ only works wit OP charger and cable, display is mediocore at best, audio as well, cam bump is annoying as hell and the sandstone is gone, unless you pay for it.
If you care for more than raw power or stats i can't see how you'd possibly get an OP3.
>>
>>55854164
>has to resort to lying and misrepresenting reviews to trashtalk a fucking cellphone
Nigga that alone should tell you that either you're insecure as shit about the phone you bought or you couldn't find anything to really criticize in the Axon 7. Which is weird because the software does have a couple downsides and minor issues, and the camera is worse than the OP3's so I don't see what you're so butthurt about. Axon 7 and OP3 exist as perfectly viable alternatives to one another right now.

I have a few questions.
In the market for a new phone, budget $400.

Currently using Moto X 2013, but it has tons of issues now.

Anyways:

What is the best I can get NEW for $400? I was looking at OP3, N6P, Axon 7.

What is the best option of those?

What is daydream and why is the Axon 7 the only one that is certified for it? Does that matter?

Canadians out there?

Coming from a Nexus 5, simple android apps and Pokémon go.

What's the best phone out there, contract or no contract doesn't matter?

If by contract, <$60/mo and <$400 for phone
If off contact, <$600
All in CAD$

Well for $300 you can get away with aa chink SD820 if
>Powerful CPU (I emulate via RetroArch, and from what I understand, emulation is more CPU-intensive than GPU

Is what matters most to you. Zuk Z2 or Le Max 820. not sure if they work on walmart or whatever so check that out. otherwise, you might wanna add a $100 and get OP3.

>shilling this hard

>>55854845
Depends on what you want out of a phone.

N6P is the pure android deal where you get lots of fast updates and good support, but otherwise the phone will soon be outclassed by the new stuff coming out very shortly.
Axon 7 isn't the only Daydream certified phone, but will be one of the first. Daydream is basically a VR headset/ setup that Google is releasing. ZTE partnered with them to be one of the first phones to use it. Basically it's an improved phone VR experience and A7 has a fast processor + beautiful screen to support that. Daydream will also require Android N. This is why A7 is all about the visuals, awesome DAC for accurate and good sound.
OP# is really fast and has nice software support. Because of the lower res display+ oxygen OS customizations + 6gb ram it is one of the best performing phones out there but has some bugs and issues that you should be aware of and lacks much of anything special about it beyond the raw performance.

>Battery is decent for me. I'd like the next phone to be "good", I don't need amazing.

>How's battery life?
I burn through the battery fairly quickly when using wireless and browsing around or watchign some videos with the screen on.

Depending on what you do it could last a whole day or around 4 hours or so. Takes about half an hour to recharge from 50%.

>Is it true that the screen has a pinkish tint to it?
I don't notice a pink tint when looking at a white background on default Vivid color setting.

If I go to display options though and switch to sRGB color profile I start to notice the tint you described.

The Idol 4S could be interesting for you. It's basically an upgraded and more expensive (350$) version of the RN3P with rather stockish Android, i guess..
The only real downside is the 3000mAh battery. You could look into the ZUK Z2, too, but it might not be compatible with US carriers.
