Yeah, the ROM is what keeps me from messing with it (well, that and lack of work area). Contemplated rigging a board with switches and a counter to allow manually toggling in each rom location, at least enough to get things moving.

I considered it. Ended up using an AVR to try to program the ROMS, but stumbled on using the shift register for address pins. Works fine up through the first 8 pins but after that I had a little brainfuck and gave up (for now anyway).
Gonna try again sometime, though. The SST39SFxxx series flash chips are DIP packages and still in production.

Yeah, I've been using it for small shit myself, I'm asking about the nixie clock since driving the nixies requires quite a few transistors/driver ICs (if you can find any nixie drivers) and fairly extensive wiring, even if you're going to be multiplexing them, which I assume is how it's usually done. There are more components and connections involved, which is why I'm thinking getting a custom PCB made may be much easier in the end than doing it on perf/stripboard.

The last thing I've built on stripboard is a PWM fan controller, I'm using it in my PC for automated fan control that isn't shit-tier like the crap that comes with most mobos. The board is as basic as they come though, all the interesting shit happens in the MCU and mostly in the PC application. Don't have any good pictures, had to put it to use immediately after finishing it since I had installed some 3000RPM fans and running those at 100% just wasn't an option.

What kind of voltage do nixies use?
You could probably use a switching regulator and step-down transformer and rectifier (and smoothing capacitors) if the current isn't huge.

If it'll take AC, just use a step-down and relays (or 'solid state relays'/a MOSFET).

From what I know of vacuum tubes (pretty much limited to CRTs), all you really should need is a heater supply, which can typically be AC.

Safe to say >150V DC, I think most end up in the 170-180V range, but low currents. The way most people end up powering them seems to be using some sort of boost converter, like the anon said ITT. Most of the shit I've done though are projects based on various MCUs, all at low voltages all around and I've never built a SMPS myself.

Nixies are cold cathode displays AFAIK, they have no heaters and operate on DC only.

I'll probably get around to building it one day, I don't really have the work space and tools for something extensive/complex either.

What machine is OSX/arch running on and why can't you use one board everywhere? I've mapped 101 key M's to use with OSX before (though I think OSX needs to die in a hole, and Apple decided that my 64 bit intel imac wouldn't get updates after 10.7 which is a shitty OS). I have 10.6 and Debian Sid on my imac. Usually run Debian, occasionally OSX. Even cross compiled openJDK 7 for OSX 10.6 because Awt doesn't work with oracle's implementation.
