IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

>it looks hideous for a tablet
Didn't you look at it before buying it online? Cmon man.
The Tablet series up until maybe X240 Tablet look garbage.
>Is the X220 any better?
X220 is good, mine had heat problems that were fixed by disabling intel speed step and by applying PERFECT THERMAL PASTE desu
The hinges are undoubtedly better because the tablet uses one hinge.
I'd stick with the tablet version, you'll end up losing money by swapping one for the other, and it'll essentially be the same specs.

I chickened out from reapplying the thermal paste on my x200 when I realized I had to take the entire thing apart and take out the motherboard because the heatpipe and the CPU is upside down.

I did clean it out tho, and it's not nearly as hot anymore.
I'm still not sure why the heat seems to be eminating from the bottom right of the laptop.

Maybe it's my wireless card?

It's about 80 something euros to buy a new screen, obviously I can replace it myself. However, wouldn't upgrading hurt my gaming performance? I play Dota 2 and it's already running pretty meh on 1600x900.
>>
What's the best screen that I can put in my x230?
>>
>>55823990
If you're planning to run at the same settings you'll lose a few fps but you could drop the settings a bit more if possible, or you could just run the new screen at a lower resolution when in game, it may not scale perfectly but it would stop the fps drop.
>>
>>55823999
1366x768 IPS, but that resolution is still pretty good on a small screen.

>>
>>55824513
Have you been monitoring the temps and power and such when it's throttling. If the temps are in order and it looks to be capable of supplying enough power, I don't see any harm but make sure your temps are acceptable above anything else.

You can't ever completely disable windows 10 telemetry.
Microsoft is actively pushing towards making this ever harder to do as well - see the recent group policy change for example.
Even if you yourself are not concerned about the data collection, you still expose information about your friends and family via Microsoft's aggressive surveillance methods.
You should not use, support or endorse this operating system.

The spyware has been backported to Windows 7 and 8.1 as well.
You can much more easily remove it though - all it takes is uninstalling the related updates.
You can find out which via a quick google search for 'telemetry updates for windows 7 and 8.1', and then hiding them in Windows Update.
Don't forget to check for these every month or so, as Microsoft can push out new updates anytime that can reinstall the spyware.

X220 1080p mods require some opening up of the device, and they use the displayport. In other words, with a modded X220 with 1080p, you can't use the displayport. Same for X230 which like the X220 otherwise only has 768p displays

T420 has 1080p mods that don't sacrifice the displayport, as does the T430, most people report success but a few have scanline issues.

If you want ultraportable the X240 upwards do 1080p but you lose a whole lotta legacy ports and their keyboards and internal builds are pretty lackluster compared to the X220

T520 has 1080p, as does W520, great machines but larger than the X220.

The X200s and X201s have 1440p displays but I think they're not IPS, and they'd have slower cpus which won't matter much unless you play light games or watch high quality videos / stream high quality content online

T61 has some 1920x1200 but it's quite big compared to an X220 and noticably slower

Personally I have an X220 and I use an external display at home. Many with T420 laptops still use external displays for 1080p and higher / multiple monitors, so I figured I'd go ultra portable and use monitors at home

It doesn't display charge if I press the display charge button, it doesn't light up or charge when I plug it in, the laptop doesn't detect a battery inserted when I drop my X220 in

Should I remove the stickers and unscrew it to see what's going on inside? Is it a common problem for slice batteries to an hero?

anons, I think my T430 consumes a little bit too much power.
Should I upgrade the PSU to 135W? I see my battery gets discharged when I load my system with 90W PSU.
>>
>>55831978
Are you sure it can take the bigger PSU? My W520's 170W adapter has a special plug that isn't compatible with any of my other Thinkpads.

I'm not. 135W uses the same power cord as the 90W and 65W ones.

I don't know much about computers, and I've been trying to educate myself as best as possible. I was using an HP Pavillion dv6 for uni until a while ago because a buddy gave it to me for free. I stopped trying to run any games on it because when it wasn't overheating the framerate was so abysmally low that I couldn't enjoy myself. I just used it for browsing and schoolwork, but even that was slow. I’m looking at buying a ThinkPad but I don’t know where to start. The sticky seems a bit dated. So far what I’ve come up with are the T420, X220, and T520 as affordable options but I hear the T420 and X220’s graphical capabilities and resolution are subpar. I like to stream movies and shows too. What would be a good budget option for me? I’m just looking for something

>>
Are any of the current thinkpad line particularly upgradeable?
>>
>>55832198
Just turn off Turbo Boost. It makes next to no difference in real world performance, but uses a ton of power and generates a ton of heat. Given that you're only slightly over the limit, that should be enough to drop you back into safe ranges.
>>
>>55832429

W520s are in the $350-$450 range. If you can't find one with an SSD, they're cheap enough that you'll have plenty of budget left to buy your own, which you should be doing anyway because used storage is a no-no and lelnovo overprices horribly if you order a new one with an SSD.

i'm looking for a laptop that has a quad-core i7 and is not super fucking heavy ( sub-5 lbs preferred) and besides that is mostly a blank slate that i can put $250 of upgrades towards the 500 GB SSD and 16 GB of RAM. hopefully the whole thing can come to under $1000 USD.

Is this possible? would i have to buy used/ refurbished?

also, where do people usually go about buying new thinkpads? the lenovo website itself doesn't have a very large selection available.

should i kill myself?

should i castrate myself?

am i retarded?

There is plenty of free space in this battery, so you can solder some wires to the docking port and use them to connect some USB flash drives (even 512GB if you can afford these). T460 has good 1080p screen, fast cpu, long battery life, USB3,
but shit keyboard and costs a lot

T420 is cheap, upgradable, very servicable and upgradable, has PCIe slot for egpu, amazing keyboard and mouseclit, blazeit, screenlatch
but mediocre cpu (still usable for nearly everything anyway), without screenmods you have a meh 900p screen non-IPS

Save some cash, get the T420 bro, doubt you'll notice much difference in performance for nearly everything anyway. But look into getting a better screen if it's not good enough for you. Still be cheaper than a T460

I have an X220 with the same kind of CPU and I don't need a new laptop for years
>>
>>55826713
Get an SXGA+ X60T, though they are kinda hard to find, you could always nab a $30 unit shipped if you are lucky and patient enough.

>>55826911
First, explain why you want it.
I mean if you are getting it for the 3K panel, you can scale it, and dat vibrant colors too. I love my B140HAN01.3 on my T430s, same with the panel on the Pixel 2, kinda wish I didn't sold it, but dat ez moolah.

>>55828984
nigga, just drop an email to me or bug me through google+?

>>55826331
I don't think I've ever pulled one apart. Perhaps the LCD is just pinched ever so slightly at that part? Sometimes there are greenboard panels on the sides/top of the display, maybe a chip is getting hot, though usually only the inverter or backlight would be hot.

>>55827293
T42 uses a Pentium M, so you would have to deal with the non/force PAE bullshit if you choose a distro. T60 uses a Core Duo or Core 2 Duo, you can upgrade to a T7200/7400/7600 cheap nowdays, you would get decent performance.

T4x is slimmer, however there are issues about moboflex, which if held the wrong way, would brick your laptop. Then there's the thing about the GPU not having a heat sink...

T60 has had some hot ATI cards.

I'd say get the T42 if its a 15" IPS display (SXGA+ or UXGA) and the T60 is not.
The AC adapter on the T60 will power newer thinkpads, & haslel if you buy the rectangular slot converter.
>>
>>55838007

I haven't had a slice battery, but I did find a problem on an Ultrabay battery with a T400. I got it as a dead machine, but I decided to remove the ultrabay and bam it was a battery. Damn thing booted right up.

Afterwards I thought "Lets see if it works on my X61T" so I used my ultrabase, plugged it in the ultrabay, it was actually draining my primary battery and then that battery died too. It could of been a coincidence but I think those batteries had faulty chips or cells. I want to think that they just go to shit after being stored for too long IMO.

>>55831978
Are you using an OEM AC adapter? If so, maybe it went bad?
90W should be the standard, I know there were 135W that were like combo car/airplane adapters. But you shouldn't need one, unless you put in a quadcore i7 that isn't supported, but it doesn't make sense because a 90W would work fine.

The only problem with it is that it's a very rare model, so finding one may take some time and you'll probably have to pay quite a bit to get it, but it should still fall within your budget. Mine came to $450 and someone else got one for ~$250, so it's not that extreme like the W701ds.

Paid $260 for this 8760w from arrowdirect, added 12GB sold it for $600 before ebay/paypal/shipping fees.
It took me some patience to get it at that price.

They are not that bad though there are some that are CCFL and LED backlit, so different brightness factors and then the issue of the CCFL backlight dying. Better than T420's, and I have used both WXGA and WXGA+ units in the past.

Plus T400 can use a widescreen 14" T60 display, but the LCD cable is different so you need to keep the T400's and disassemble the lid, just just a simple lid swap.
Same goes with T/W500's and 15.4" T60's.

I have a t520 and I'm wondering how can I increase battery life with Ubuntu? With Win10 I can play music or watch movies and it'll give me at least another 1 hr more than I would with Ubuntu.

local market

if you live in a decent sized city there will be many available to you (assuming you live in US)

look on craigslist

ebay is slightly more expensive imo, and you are also competing with people from the whole world and not just in your area, and shipping will be a problem, and you can't immediately see the state of the thinkpad until you get it

but both are comparable

look on craiglist first

remember that you can upgrade the keyboard, hard drive, screen, ram, etc. - just find a cheap one with a good processor and body

I found a few W530s refurbed with 1080p screens, quad core i7s, and 500g SSD. I have an x220 that I really like but it is getting old and I'd like a bit of a speed upgrade. My work bag takes up to a 15" laptop so I think the size should be fine. And are there other options aside from the W530 I should be looking at?
>>
Hi, /tpg/. I'm looking to replace a tablet-convertible with a laptop, and the buying guides seem to be all over the place so I figured I'd ask here.

Right now, I have an ASUS Transformer Book I picked up for around $200 two or so years ago. It runs Windows 8.1 and is pretty powerful for what it is, but the problem is that the touchpad is kind of unwieldy (since the screen is a touchscreen, if any dust gets on it the whole thing freaks out), the storage is really limited (32GB) and it can't do 1080p video properly.

What I'm looking for is something that:

- Runs Windows
- Can play 1080p video (incl. streams)
- Can handle having multiple large PDFs open at once
- Has a display large enough to comfortably read and do word processing on.

I don't know what size my current thing is (I think it's 10-12 inches) but I'd rather not get a gigantic tank of a laptop since I usually carry the tablet in a backpack.

So I did some battery performance tests on X220T 6-cell battery. Which should apply for ordinary X220 as well (For 9-cell theoretically just

multiply time value by 3/2 (or 1.5)). The results are kind of surprising, but not really. Method used was as follows:
Casual - fullscreen picture slideshow (simulating things moving on the screen (duh)) with some allways-on online radio (simulating wifi

usage (duh no. 2)), half brightness
Video - fullscreen video on loop (another duh), wifi on, but doing nothing, brightness 85% or closest value
Performance - video encoding through Handbrake, brightness zero + one point (so minimum but visible)
mSATA SSD, no HDD, 8 (4+4) GB RAM, i5 2520m; adaptive brightness, auto-screen-dim and other funny things like that were all turned off as

well as Turbo Boost

+-------------+-------------+-------------+-------------+
| 100% -> 10% | Windows 7 | OSX 10.11 | Kubuntu |
+-------------+-------------+-------------+-------------+
| Casual | 4:39 8/15| 5:28 8/16| 4:20 10/20|
+-------------+-------------+-------------+-------------+
| Video | 3:58 13/15| 3:14 14/16| 3:01 17/20|

According to the buyers guide:
>An aftermarket Quad Core i7 CPU will work in a T420, but they do not come as standard on any T420.
Is this true for ONLY the t420? Could I use an i7's integrated graphics in the t420? If so than this is awesome.

We had this discussion last thread, the temperatures aren't good and you have to do a bios patch or something like that
>>
>>55844604
What if we used something with a very low TDP like the i7-4790T (45W)?
>>
>>55844695
It doesn't quite work that way. Haswell and later generations use different sockets from the T420, so they're physically incompatible. Ivy Bridge mobile processors share the same socket, but only work if you flash coreboot, which isn't quite as easy as a regular BIOS mod. The only quadcores that can be simply dropped into the T420 are Sandy Bridge QM chips found standard in the T520 and W520. I don't think there's any substantial difference in the integrated graphics between these quadcores and the standard dualcore i5s.
>>
>>55844695
first of thats a haswell cpu so that won't work.
only sandy bridge, and ivy bridge (with a modded bios apparently) will work.
2 45 watt parts are the hot running parts. you'd need a 35 watt one to be in the nice temperature range.
>>
>>55844695
>very low tdp
Sorry anon but the theory of relativity relates a lot to cpu's, you'd be sacrificing performance for tdp/heat.
I mean yeah you'll most likely have better l2 and l3 cache but the number crunching will be similar to the i5.
Fuck this is the internet and I'm spit balling here, I could be wrong, but that's the way I see it
>>
>>55844594
Fuck. Im broke.
>>
>>55844564
I was thinking about doing this, but apparently, it gets hot? I just wanted the extra CPU power. Note that I haven't bought the T420 yet, just planning what to do with it. If it's fine with the default CPU, I'll just not bother.
>>
>>55845117
Just get a T520 or W520 instead. Their cooling was actually designed to handle a quadcore and the screens are infinitely better to boot.
>>
Hey /tpg/!
Thinking of getting a Thinkpad for just everyday stuff, browsing the internet, a little programming and the like, won't be doing any gaming so I'm not looking for nothing too heavy.
A local shop has a few refurbished machines ready to go. Which should I look into, they've got: X220, X230, W520 and T420?
Thanks!
>>
>>55845117
I bought a 2720qm for my T420, should be here the next week or so. Will post here if you want.
>>
>>55845192
I'd pick the T420 despite the bad screen just because the Xs are too small imo and the Ws not portable enough for me.

If you want the ultraportables get the x230 though.
>>
>>55845192
>>55845233

X's are a good size for prog and surfing imo, and the x220 is better than the x230 from a price point and from a mechanical keyboard point of view.

I have a problem and I believe only /tpg/ can help me with.

I got T420, didn't notice it when I bought it.
But sometime there's no sound, not from the speakers, nor headphones.
I can still "see" the sound from the mixer but can't hear anything.
I can solve it by shaking it a few times.
And reproduce it if I shake it a few times.
What could be the cause?
>>
>>55845685
The CPU in the T420s is soldered to the board, you can't change it even if you wanted to. The dualcore i7s are crap, they run hotter and devour more battery for minimal performance gain.
