Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread. ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

Please avoid using the term “photoshop” as a verb, meaning any kind of photo manipulation or image editing in general. Photoshop is just the name of one particular image editing program, which should be avoided since it is proprietary. There are plenty of free programs for editing images, such as the GIMP.

What's the simplest load balancer/reverse proxy I can set up on my Linux web server? I don't actually have a significant load, but I want to have web apps from multiple servers (Node.js and Glassfish) available through the same domain on port 80.

Basically I want a user going to https://mydomain.com/App1 to get sent to a page hosted on Glassfish and a user going to https://mydomain.com/App2 to get sent to a Node.js-hosted app.

Or is there a better way to do this?
>>
>>55795526
Ubuntu is derived from Debian. Their differences are marked, but typically people see Debian as a stable, effortless-to-maintain distro, and Ubuntu as a completely user-friendly, even more stable, even more bloated distro.
Does that help?

Void isn't completely free software, it has a non-free repo and a blobbed kernel. Perhaps you meant Parabola?
Besides, the inner workings of Void (xbps, runit) are simple enough that you won't have trouble solving the problem on your own.
>>
>>55796732
Well, linux from scratch doesn't require a lot of prior knowledge, it requires patience and the ability to read about things from how I understand it. A friend did and used it for a few months when we were both pretty new to the free software world, he learned a lot by doing.
>>55796778
More people are not entirely a good thing. For some things sure but for others they shift their usage to some programs that are not necessarily better than what they used before without knowing about it. What would really help is more people caring about FLOSS and portability.
>>
why do all the distros suck camel balls?
I've been using linux for 8 years, so I'm not new to the way it works and I'm extremely comfortable with it, that's not the problem.
I just can't find a distro that isn't fucking terrible in some way. I can outline some problems if anyone's willing to shed some light onto something I haven't tried:
Gentoo:
absolutely fucking love it. I used it for 2 years and it was great, the problem is that I need to be on the latest software all the time (for school and autism/preference), and while this is easy to set up, compiling is a fucking nightmare for large projects. Before getting into it I thought the -bin projects would save me, but at least with libreoffice, if you're running ~arch, you can't run libreoffice-bin because it's built against different dependencies (poppler et al.) This makes system administration a major nuissance for me. (I love the flexibility and the package management and the ability to easily set up a hardened system, but compiling on a small laptop is just impossible for me (It took 6 hours to compile libreoffice. I can't do that every time there's an update, and I can't fall behind because I'd have to mask all the libraries as well).

Arch:
so much is hidden from the user and it has no enterprise support. The wiki is meh and largely outdated if you want to do anything that isn't setting up a tiling wm and normalfag shit. The package management is simple and fast but not very customizeable or tunable (cannot easily control dependencies) Also their repository strategy is just backwards imo. I don't trust random aur users, and end up having to read through their pkgbuilds on every update, and they are just generally irresp0onsible when it comes to keeping timely and complete updates (I don't blame them, they're only volunteers anyway), but with the official repos being so small, I rely on aur packages for almost everything, which puts me in a tricky and time consuming situation.

lads what happened to the desktop threads?

Contd
Debian:
I think this is a good effort and an honorable project but I don't "get" their autistic versioning scheme. Stable has ANCIENT packages unless you back port from testing, which can break. But if you're running something that requires a lot of dependencies you end up having to back port half your system from testing, which defeats any purpose of being on stable in the first place and only breaks updates further down. I currently use Jessie for servers but every so often I run into a distro mai trainer decision that handcuffs me (like dropping ffmpeg from Jessie repos, or not having the fucking stream module for nginx in jessie repos OR back ports which completely ruins the whole experience.

CentOS/Fedora
CentOS is the same as debian imo but with even smaller repos and less support for doing anything "outside the box". You either follow red hat's way of doing things, or you do everything manually and end up having to fight the system constantly. Fedora is like debian testing but it breaks even more often in my experience. Try to install ovirt 4 in Fedora 24, or get dnf working in centos 7.2 and you'll see what I mean.

Ubuntu is debian with more breakage and packages that are even less vanilla and full of strange versioning in the same way. Last time I used it was 14.04 so idk how much has changed but thats what made me want to try something rolling in the first place. Snapshot/versioned releases make zero sense to me. I don't understand why I have to stay on 2 year old versions of software until someone else decided I can update ALL software at once.

Why cant I just install whatever the fuck package at whatever the fuck version I want without going through hoops

>>55797003
>>55797106
Seconded, you could try Debian testing or sid if you want a rolling distro that's not Arch or Gentoo.

Testing is supposed to be more stable than sid, but if there is some kind bug it's usually fixed faster in sid. Note that testing and sid are slowing down during a Debian release freeze, it's not a true rolling distro.

You could also try OpenSuse tumbleweed, but I have no experience with it. It's relying heavily on its custom administration tools, which might annoy you quite a bit.

>>55797158
>I haven't, how is it?
Pretty nice actually, the package base is huge, checkinstall is comfortable to use if you find something that is not in there and it is surprisingly stable (apt-listbugs is a necessity though). So if you ever feel like switching again, from what you wrote it could fit you.
>>55797286
YAST is neat, but the package base is really sad.
>>
>>55797286
Thanks for the advice
What do you mean by slowing down, not truly rolling release?

Having to rely on YaST would definitely annoy me, yes, thanks anyways though.
I guess my whole rant about rolling release and trusting developers rather than maintainers and obsessing over vanilla packages and fresh versions is that I just really want to do things the GNU/Linux way. I don't want to learn "the Debian way" or "the arch way" or "the RHEL way". I want a standard file hierarchy and standard uid/gids, and standard user naming and file conventions, and I just don't want to fuck around with doing things the way the distro maintainers want me to do them.

Some examples of this:
I keep my dotfiles under version control and I have to branch for stupid shit like gentoo starting the x server on tty7 by default and arch starting it wherever you run startx (usually tty1)

if I want to set my motd in debian I have to either overwrite the dynamically generated one or stick it in motd.tail instead of regular motd

firefox installs to /opt/ in some places, /usr/share/ in other places and so on

oh-my-zsh is in the home directory by default buy in /usr/share from the aur

just random shit like this really irritates me

Does sid offer vanilla packages and closely follow the Filesystem Hierarchy Standard?
(pls no package1-3.1.2-backports-deb-v1-SECURITY-1-2-full-1.6.5-jessie, VANILLA)

>>55797410
See above as well, thanks a lot. How often do spooky things happen that require manual intervention?
>>
>>55797428
>gentoo starting the x server on tty7 by default
I'm using Funtoo, which is based on Gentoo, and it starts my X server on the tty I run startx from. Are you sure you didn't configure it or used something to launch it from tty7?
>>
>>55797471
Nope, 100% default. I remember the headaches trying to get physlock to lock my screen because it said there was no entry for tty7 I had to mess with ck-launch-session to get it to work without changing the defaults)
>>
Stupid xubuntu noob question here.

I have an older Thinkpad that doesn't seem to respond to the Power Management settings for putting the screen to sleep after a certain amount of idle time. I swear it works sometimes and then other times it will not dim no matter how long I let it idle. This is especially annoying when I'm running on battery. Any suggestions?
>>
>>55797496
Oh, I dont use ck-launch-session, but I know that puts it to tty7 by default. I use a good ol' `exec xmonad` to launch the WM.
>>
>>55797527
I was using exec bspwm, and it was putting it on tty7
ck-launch-session also launched it on tty7 but at least it recorded the session so I could use physlock (appropriate wtmp and such entries were added)
>>
>>55797428
What about using the vanilla packages you like and manually compiling things where you disagree with the maintainer? This way you can have big repos while only compiling few things.
Just a thought though you could also go full stali. Sometimes packages really need patches to actually work well and upstream fucks up themselves.
I have only been running sid for a year now but so far one time deadbeef stopped working for 3 hours (then it was already patched by the deb-multimedia guy) and had to keep packages back one time for half a day until it was resolved. I also got a few bug warnings through apt-listbugs but not many.
The cool thing is if you compile a package with checkinstall and give it the correct name and version and this package gets added to the repo later and is newer than yours, it will update without problems and keep everything running well.
>>55797527
I just have a script to run startx in tty1 as soon as I log in in .bashrc
>>
>>55797563
`exec` for me has always put it on the tty I ran startx from, but it might be changed. Funtoo isn't completely in-line with Gentoo so it might be different on this specific case. `ck-launch-session` also sets up dbus and the like I thought, so maybe that's why physlock works only if you launch with `ck-launch-session`. Can't say for sure though.
>>
>>55797584
that sounds really interesting.
Have you used arch or gentoo too? What would you say the major differences are?

Is there a way to restrict to only libre software unless I specifically override it?
>>
>>55797394

>>
>>55797622
Not the guy you're responding to, but in Gentoo you can set ACCEPT_LICENSE="-* @FREE" in your make.conf, and override licenses per package in /etc/portage/package.license.
>>
>>55797653
Yeah. that's what I was using on gentoo. I was interested in whether Debian has a similar implementation
Sorry if that wasn't clear I tend to ramble
>>
>>55797622
Used arch for a few months, it was okay and the AUR is nice (still using it but on debian) but the community here and on their forum is not exactly something I would want to hang out in.
I installed gentoo once just to say that I did honestly, ports and USE-flags are cool but gentoo is not my cup of tea. The main difference seems to be that packages in arch by default have usually every dependency and that it is not source based, so I don't think comparing them makes sense desu.
For gentoo see >>55797653
For arch see parabola (it is just easier that way)
And for debian you don't need to do anything, it is free by default.
>>
>>55797726
How are you using aur on debian?
>>
>>55797698
Debian has 3 repos, main is enabled by default and is fully free with even a deblobbed kernel, contrib has packages that need nonfree dependencies and is disabled by default and nonfree has nonfree packages and is disabled by default.
Debian is very very close to being endorsed by the fsf but since the wiki shows people how to add nonfree the fsf sadly can't endorse it. The dfsg are pretty good.

I want to make a partition on my ssd and install antergos on that, which seems easy enough.

the important point is that good passwords must be both hard to guess and easy to remember. The main message of the comic is to show that common "password generation rules" fail at both points: they make hard to remember passwords, which are nonetheless not that hard to guess.

It also illustrates the failure of human minds at evaluating security. "Tr0ub4dor&3" looks more randomish than "correcthorsebatterystaple"; and the same minds will give good points to the latter only because of the wrong reason, i.e. the widespread (but misguided) belief that password length makes strength. It does not. A password is not strong because it is long; it is strong because it includes a lot of randomness

Right... We'll see how physically disabled I am when I put my mouse in your rectum.

So what would be good linux distro for a old 2007 laptop that originally had vista on it?

I just need it for taking notes.

Intel GM965

Intel Core 2 Duo T5250 @ 1.50 GHz(64 bit)

Any distro should be able to do that

I know but the guy that asked did it in a response to a post talking about keyboard usage. The only DE that has okay keyboard shortcuts is gnome and that still falls short of most in comparison to most dynamic WMs.

Yes. How you set it depends on which DE/WM you use but they're all capable of it.

Depends on your distro but they all have repository listings.

or just use
pkgmgr -searchflag package_name

Is there a way to get xfce4-panel to play nice with kde neon? I can't get the indicator plugin for xfce to work and having an xfce panel and a kde panel with just indicators is ugly.
>>
What's your irssi config? Do you use SSL? I read it was kinda unnecessary, is this true?

I recently installed xfce4 through the terminal on Kali Linux. After rebooting, I get to the (new) login screen but I can't login. I get this "Sorry, that didn't work" message every time I try, and after a while, it just gets stuck loading after inputting the username. The reboot and shut down buttons don't work either. How can I fix this? Thanks.
>>
>>55803953
I've heard people argue that WM+taskbarwidgets+contextmenus=DE, but I generally agree.
WM!=DE.
In fact WM>=DE for resource usage (mostly).

I don't like Display Managers (prefer simple super fast tty login) and mostly dislike DEs.
I've used xfce/kde/gnome and they were all trying too hard to be windows/osx for some stupid usability reason. Pffff. Who designs software for usability? Go back to OS X.

>>55804019
Yeah, the whole point was that WMs get all the important jobs done without any of the waste and bullshit icons/GUIs. The Ubuntu software center makes me want to wretch.

Unneccessary or not, it's not hard to configure.
My irssi config is pretty much stock.

The worst is how they mix in paid closed-source soon-to-be-abandonware with the real software. It's like they're actively trying to create Windows' pathetic software culture all over again.

The only actually helpful thing i will tell you is that kali is not meant to be installed on actual hardware and makes no sense as an day to day OS. Are you root? Because this is probably your issue. Please install a distro that is not just a collection of pen testing tools.
Debian would be very familiar to you.
>>
>>55805197

>>

How did you search? If you tell us the actual chips name maybe the debian wiki can help you.
>>
>>55805279
I figured I just would use it as I already had it installed from a long time ago. Yes, I'm root. Yes, I know Kali is not meant to blah blah blah. That aside, is there a way to fix this?
>>
>>55805246
>Windows' pathetic software culture all over again.
Please explain, I'm interested. I'm really trying to give a chance to Linux but right now all I see is a lot of questions and unclear problem solving that still dont work for the many questions I have.
I swear I'm not trolling or anything but after a few hours I'm still trying to set basing things up. On Windows everything is really easier. On Linux at the moment it's just problems. I may have to learn like anything else, but nothing is helping. Nothing is very intuitive.

If you can't learn from what I wrote there is no point in further trying to help you. You are not doing yourself any good by both running kali and running as root.
>>
>>55805301
Well I used Syaptic since the Ubuntu software center didn't worked. Nothing found; After that I googled the problem but there was no solution...I may be dumb but how would you proceed? You just installed Ubuntu, your soundcard is Soundblaster X-Fi Titanium and there's no sound. What do you do?

>>
>>55805279
Mostly agree. Kali should be sandboxed in a vm.
All of the tools available on Kali are also available on Arch (at least from my experience, there could be some missing).
You should be able to access another TTY to debug it: ctrl+alt+[F1 thru F7]
>>
>>55805311
On Windows, if you want to do X, you need to search the internet for software to do X. You'll come across thirty paid programs that do X, with trial versions that do 1/5 of X then bug you to pay for them. You'll find a couple free programs that do X, but the developer has committed suicide several decades ago and never released the source code, so the program is buggy and generally not good. The rest of the results are downloads claiming to be programs that perform X, but are actually just malware.

I find out which sound chip my "sound card" uses, search for it on the debian wiki and read what I have to do there. Oh and I would most definitely use apt or aptitude over any gui package manager frontend.
>>
>>55805311

>>
>>55805357

>>
>>55805403
I told you earlier that your problem comes from running as root. Remove all DEs you have, (and by remove I mean purge) purge xorg, add a new user, add it to sudo, install xorg and the DE/WM metapackage anew, run startx as a non-root user
>>
I installed Kubuntu through the terminal, however the installation yielded some errors and, in the end, it took me nowhere so I thought that Kubuntu wasn't really installed or anything.

However, I restarted the PC a while ago and noticed that everything changed, from the longin screen to the desktop to the one of Kubuntu.

Question is, what happened to ''Ubuntu'' if that makes sense? Can I change it back?
>>

The display manager will be running as root/a dedicated DM user anyways; that has nothing to do with his problem.

I think we all used Windows at some point. Of course, no1 (except grandpa and grandma and most companies/small businesses) pays for software. But I'm sure you know the pain of the windows installers. CNET used to not have those malware offers, but they were still mostly full of shitty programs.
There are also [sketchy] cracks and hacks to make proprietary software "free", but nothing compares to software that really doesn't try to make a dime off of its users (with enterprise support as an exception).

And even with the availability of certain free software for Windows it still can't hold a candle to Linux's central, distro-developer-vetted repositories. I don't even want to think about the horror of the "windows app store"...

Just searx "soundblaster whatever" chip linux and you will have results. Why are you using a motherfucking soundcard in 2016 anyways? And why fo you think it has to do with your problem? Are you using Pulseaudio? Is your stuff plugged into the right outputs? Troubleshooting sound is a major pain in the butt if the other person is not right next to you.

>Can't even find that...I guess I'll just go back to Windows ;_;

unfortunately creative have been one of the worse companies for driver support on linux, nothing has quiet been this bad since the broadcom wifi days

creative have consistently put out awful hardware with awful drivers (either windows or linux) for years, not helped by the fact they'll put shitty chips in lower models of their more premium lines requiring hours of research just to find the drivers for the obscure chip (a favourite past time of my creative audigy card in windows xp days)

honestly, I just ended up giving up with my current soundblaster on-board and bought a cheap dedicated soundcard, creative put out a single linux driver for an entirely different chip in the same line and almost nothing works while playback barely functions correctly (the main channel has 3 sound levels, off, quiet, loud, main volume control is done through a non-main channel....)

if you do want to try and find the chip though I suggest lspci -vv, digging through dmesg, lshw etc
