What's a fair price for a grey market, brand new, Tudor Heritage Black Bay 79220N?

Can some of you more experienced people check your favorite sites for it?

Also the reason I ask is because I am seeing prices range from $2300 to $3900 from what are supposed to be reputable dealers.

That's a huge price difference and I don't know why.

For $3,000+ I expect in-house movement, bro. Otherwise I'd just get a used high-end.
>>
>>55777292
Most people who need to be told Lange is a high end watchmaker that is good will understand "ALS" to refer to a disease. Might want to just spell it out.

Cartier has pushed out crap for decades and decades, only have they just recently shown any interest in watchmaking. Mentioning them while leaving off more serious watchmakers like Piaget, Vacheron Constantin, and Audemars Piguet seems weird. IWC, which catches flak for using eta as well, is still far and away a more of a serious and quality watchmaker with far more contributions to watchmaking than Cartier has even attempted to be.

You mention amphibian in 100-5k when it's generally 0-100 as far as I can tell.

Orient should be in 0-100

No need to hate on spring drive

Vintage American and vintage Japanese are both really excellent for some great watches, not just vintage swiss.

Highlighting certain selections in the same color as your categories is visually confusing. Same with underlining.
>>
>>55777500
It's 4am, just a quick list to replace this shit fest
>>55775919

I forgot Vacheron yeah.
I put amphibias in the midtier because you're gonna want a decent bracelet or NATO for it; so it ends up being like 70+30 or 10.
I think the Seiko 5 covers what orient does with a more reliable movement.
Spring drives are expensive as fuck to service to I didn't include them.
I also agree with adding vintage burger and jap.
Cartier make very nicely finished watches though, and they probably have the most heritage out of all the watch brands.
No one would fault you for having a cartier on your wrist, especially a tank.
>>55777491
I made sure to include "not a scam" anon.
>>
>>55777292
>>55777491
In adittion to ALS, add anything from Glashutte (Nomos, Muhle, Tutima, Bruno, Glashutte Original, etc.) to the list based on their respective price ranges.

Also break out your "mid-tier" into:
<$1,000 - enthusiast
$1,000 - $3,000 - entry-level luxury
$3,000- $5,000 - mid-tier luxury

In fact, low end should be $100- $500. <$100 is ultra low end/disposable-tier
>>
>>55777545
>Spring drives are expensive as fuck to service
Is it worse than anything else in your high-end category (official/authorized service center)? I doubt it.
>>
>>55777545
>Spring drives are expensive as fuck to service to I didn't include them.
You have patek and lange on this list. You want to service a automatic patek it's near 1k, especially if it has a moonphase or any other complications really. Spring drive is less.

>and they probably have the most heritage out of all the watch brands.
What the fuck am I reading.

>I made sure to include "not a scam" anon.
Tell us how much a in-house tudor costs to service, and then tell how much it needs to come down for you to think it's reasonable.
>>
In fact, how cheap do you really think service is? A run of the mill ETA7750 already costs $250 to service where I live, and that's by an independent watchmaker, not official service center. An ETA 3-hand costs ~$150.
>>
>>55777663
That's pretty cheap, depending where you live and who you're going thru.

I generally don't see anything for under 250, and not under 400 for anything complicated or highly precise (chronometer.)
>>
>>55777696
Just

>>
>>55777708
My point exactly. The anon who made this >>55777292
Probably thinks "workhorse" movements can be serviced for a small fraction of in-house movements, which isn't necessarily true. It's also why I consider <$100 automatics "disposable" since it'll cost more to service than to just buy a new one.
>>
>>55777791
Personally, unless you really want to keep something running forever, I wouldn't bother servicing anything under 1k unless you want to have some sort of 'this is my forever-watch' bond with it. some 500 dollar watch can be worn at least a couple decades.

I've been seeing them for more like $700 and I'm guessing they'll soon reach price parity with the SDGMs. Really all they should have done was use that script on them, the guilloche was enormously better than the boring SARB dial.
>>
>>55777835
>bloated
What?
The finishing is different than the other 6R15 and you can probably get it for less than $900.
>>
>>55778766
The only bad thing of the SARB dial is the inner ring with the decaseconds indices, without those it would be perfect. Maybe leave out automatic and 23 jewels too. Oh, yeah, also the fucking lume, take it off.

There are many areas to make a watch more or less dressy. But a dress watch simply can not have an angular, sporty, steel case like what you posted.

Not that people will crucify you for wearing something like that Seiko in a formal situation, especially today in the age of sport coats and tennis shoes, but that doesn't make it a dress watch for the same reason tennis shoes aren't formal wear.

I'm not him, I just want to know the requirements.

So a steel case watch can't be a dress watch? What about all those vintage Omega/Zenith, then? Were they considered sport watches at the time?
>>
>>55781631
Precious metals is preferred, my main point was about angular sporty cases. No one looks at an oyster-esque tool watch case and thinks 'is that white gold, platinum or steel?' they might for an actual dress watch
>>
I'm heading to the JLC boutique in NYC today. any requests if I am allowed to take pictures? I will pick up a catalogue but I don't have a scanner with me on vacation

I do have a better camera with me than yesterday, so don't let that pic of the Omega window discourage you.
>>
>>55781862
I feel like these days, a steel dress watch is acceptible, but I suppose precious metals will always be dressier. I just don't get invited to the sorts of parties where you see the gold pateks come out.

no titanium though.
>>
>>55782023
Ask to see a gyrotourbillon and then look it over and say "That's pretty cool. Here, catch!" And toss it back to them.

And then post the WebM.
>>
>>55781009
>>55781631
It should be discrete, no bling or excessively flashy or busy face.

Complications can be OK, making it also a conversation piece. Skeleton watches are in a grey area.

Basically for a gentleman it should not look out of place together with a white shirt, suit and tie. For the ladies I refer to the femanon with the Moonwatch.
>>
>>55782234

Vintage watches may work as dress watches only if they are in pristine condition, otherwise they'll look dirty and attract to much attention in a plain white shirt and sober suit or tuxedo, etc...

If you're hitting Seiko and JLC and are interested in cartier, there's a cartier right between them with some of the more horologically interesting pieces on fifth (near the van cleef & arpels, which has a midnight planetarium in stock).

Marketing aside, Rolex makes high quality watches with good finishing and solid, accurate, in house movements. Their dress watches are probably more accurate and have a longer service interval than your generic basic iwc, als, whatever. They're fairly plain (because dress watch), though I liked the dual time. I bet a Cellini moon phase or big date would be great.

I do use my chrono during the day to time my walks that I take during lunch break. I also time my poop breaks so I don't take too long and make ppl think I'm masturbating in there. I see watches on sale from DE, IT, and FR all the time. I mostly search for German/Swiss military-style or tool watches though. Different tastes in watches in continental Europe than whatever you're looking for perhaps. Also, Euros seem to prefer chrono24 to list pre-owned watches.

it still randomly stopped ticking when I flicked my wrist in very particular ways, and started again when I flicked it another way.
when I replaced the battery I noticed a piece of metal was loose, I tried to place it back but there is no way as it broke off of a larger piece. I looked at a reference image of the watch to try to figure out what this piece does. At first I thought it was to hold a gear in place but that makes no sense as that would produce too much friction and I see no scoring marks. I think this pin keeps a certain gear at ground voltage, So I am going to leave it out. whats the worst that can happen? Im sure there is redundant grounding inside.

I was pushed off the fence by the fact that they were selling it with the nice brown strap in that pic. I don't have any watches that could even remotely pass as 'nice looking', just rugged and tough watches. $89 is nothing compared to the prices I've seen for nicer watches.

I think it's a mistake to buy a seiko 5 with the intention of accessorizing it. Before you know it you've spent as much on straps as you have on the watch, and seiko canvas straps are already really good.

Casio DW-5600.

I don't own a mechanical watch in that price range, I think it's a false economy. Nobody will get a Seiko 5 serviced, a Seiko 5 will never be anything special.

If you're going to buy a throwaway beater watch, get something quartz or digital, and save up for something special. There are many good autos in the $200-$500 range these days.

It can be "interesting" without being good.

I heard of a watchmaker around here who bought an obviously fake "Lollex" in East Asia, just to take it home and take it apart.

Inside was the greatest surprise: hand made mechanics made from tin can lids. And it worked, at least for a while. He said it was impressive in a crazy kind of way. When such people get to focus on making something new rather than fake things will become interesting.

I got them both on ebay. The Accutron was from Canada, and the Poljot was from Ukraine. I like both of them a lot, but he accutron has a more interesting movement and it is constructed better.

The accutron has a thicker acrylic crystal, a stainless steel case, a screwdown caseback, and a 218 tuning fork movement. I got it for $140.

The Poljot has a thinner crystal, chrome plated brass case, a pressed caseback, and a communist handwinding movement. I love the textured dial though, and handwinding is very satisfying. It is annoying when I forget to wind it though, because it does not have a quickset date complication like the accutron.

Sync works like dogshit for changing timezones but great for just normal timekeeping.

As its solar powered, sometimes if I've accidentally left it face down, when I pick it up you see all the hands whirring about as it gets power back and updates the time. Its never been wrong, kept up to date through daylight savings so far. I've not noticed it needing to be in a certain direction or anything for it to sync.

Updating based on time zone is... sub-par. Its worked a couple of times, like when I went to Brussels, but when I went to Madrid and Bucharest it refused to automatically change.

It has a 2 year warranty though so I might send it in. My dad always said he avoids those auto updater ones because they invariably stop working.

Good question.

Depends how certain I am that I could turn the watch back around if I wanted to. Let's say if I was confident I could get my money back by reselling it -- 50k is the most, unless I become crazy rich, then whatever.

Lots of people here have watches operating at or better than a minute a month. The new Rolexes are basically rated at a minute a month or better.

If you despise setting and winding watches, I submit to you that you don't actually like watches all that much. So many watch people love manual wind because it's a way to interact with the watches they love. It's the general, non-watch-loving public that doesn't like it.

That being said, I can put my GS on the night stand Friday night and pick it up Monday morning and it will still be running.

I started by comparing watches to guns in that they are both machines that wear out and depreciate, and for those and other reasons, are usually bad investments.

I argued from there because I have time and I like arguing.

my right to own weapons means that the burden is on you to justify disarming me. or convincing me to lay down my arms.

but if you want my personal reasons, I could give you a few just because.

at the end of the day, I cannot count on others to come to my rescue. in the unlikely event that I need it, I can draw my pistol from my side in a matter of seconds, whereas police assistance is minutes away. I am my own last defender, and my safety is my own responsibility.

My King Seiko b/c it's been in and out of the shop for a month now since i bought it, so I never had the gratification of wearing it at peak meme.

Otherwise, I have a weakness to jump the gun at deals on Ebay that were too good to pass up, even if i didn't love the watch, which was the case with my Tutima and Fortis (was looking mainly at Sinns at the time). Fortunately I've grown into the 2 and decided not to sell them.

>>
>>55799109
>>55799274
The "minute a month" meme for mechanicals seem to be pure luck, or the way you wear it. In optimal conditions (i.e. you wear it daily, keep the main spring wound at 3/4 tension or better at all times, and your wrist motions mimics the watchmaker's testing winder quite closely). I have 3 watches with top grade ETA movements, freshly adjusted, that still loses 3 to 6 sec. a day because I wear/rest/leave them on a cheap winder somewhat irregularly (switching them throughout the week). So if you're really that autistic about that 1 min a month number, get a quartz or spring drive.
