Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Please let me know how it's better than a normal 220 with an IPS display. If you're someone that likes to draw all the time then you'll get a way better board to do that on.

I have both, wen't back to the 220 as soon as I put an IPS in.

I think my X201 might need the thermal paste replaced but I'm not sure...I've never replaced it before but I also hadn't used a laptop 100% before a few years ago. Before that, desktops only and no thermal paste after the initial application.

So the X201 is about 5-6 years old, Core i5 M560 2.67GHz. I've had it for about two years, running Arch + XFCE with really no problems other than overheating. When I have a normal set of applications running it's fine, like up to 15 Firefox tabs + Chrome occasionally + Spotify + Atom + a few terminals.

If I add any kind of video to that mix, it doesn't matter if flash/html5/mkv in VLC, it will jack the temp up to 85 and if I try to do too many things at once the fucker will shut down. Video makes it hit 75-80C, and then I have to be really careful about what else I'm doing. Encoding mp3s from WAV or FLAC any longer than 80 minutes is impossible. If I try to do two albums back to back, it will shut down at 95C. Is there anything I can do before trying new thermal paste?

current score is paste 1, no paste 0
>>
>>55740116
Sure it can take some damage, but it won't be as sturdy as two regular ones, right? And good luck finding replacement rubber stop thingies when they fall out. I'm not saying that it isn't a nice laptop, just that the regular one is nicer, if you ask me.

>>55740183
I think it depends which thinkpad you have
some thinkpads have the trackpad assembly attached to the keyboard, others have it standalone. there are some where the surface is separate from the trackpoint buttons

for all thinkpads, though, you can definitely replace it for quite cheap though - just look around a little and you will find the part you need, even the keyboard only costs like $30 normally, the trackpad assembly will be much cheaper
for the X220 it'll run you like $5 to $10, pic related

but on most old thinkpads, like the x220 or x220t, the trackpad isn't nearly as nice as the trackpoint, you will probably get used to using the trackpoint after you buy it
(newer thinkpads have fucked the trackpoint and made it super stiff so yeah it depends which model you have)

I found an already modified BIOS online, compared it to an original bios image for differences in IDA, and applied them to a newer BIOS version. To change the image, I just looked at the way it injects the BMP normally, found the offset it puts it at when flashing, and manually stuck it in. I think it's not exactly how they inject it, though, as you can still see the intel logo on my boot image... Then just flash the modified backup to my device and that's it.

There's more or less three methods currently.

>Advanced Dock - easy, elegant setup but old and highly restricted in size and power
T60, T61, T400
>Expresscard - more DIY, but the only restriction on card size and power is the limited bandwidth of just one PCI-E lane
T410/T510, T420/T520, T430/T530
>Thunderbolt 3 - latest greatest meme port, closer to full desktop speeds than the others
Thinkpad 13, maybe? I don't know much about new Thinkpads. Someone else here probably does.

If you NEED a calibrated profile, you should consider buying or renting an i1 Display Pro(i1D3) and profile your screen yourself. it's the best thing you can do to correct the huge blue shift of the screen and it's pretty easy to do.
I could send you my T430 profile but it's too outdated(August 2014 and I can't recalibrate since my i1D2 has drifted and it's not giving accurate measurements anymore, i'm saving money for a i1D3 now)

Ok, I benchmarked some animu Hi10p test video
time mpv --untimed --no-audio --framedrop=no --frames=600 --fs temp/\[1080p\]\[16_REF_L5.1\]\[mp3_2.0\]Suzumiya\ Haruhi\ no\ Shoushitsu\ BD\ OP.mkv
19.68s user 0.52s system 187% cpu 10.751 total

that translates to 55fps. That's about the same result you got, 2x headroom for 24fps cartoons, but as it's all software decoding it makes it in my book far from comfy-tier. H.264 videos on the other hand are smooth as fuck as VAAPI eats those with nice low watt usage (powertop says only 4W above idle for 1080p60 and 2W for 1080p anime, compared to over 10W it was consuming when decode that Hi10p file)

>>55747274

>>

Yes, as long as the video is using H264. >>55755621
Guess I'll try doing that.

Just to make sure, you're not experiencing any stuttering throughout the first ED video, right?
>>
>>55755868
I haven't watched that anime on my TP, but lots of other 1080p ones. Could try, but I really don't want to dl it again, ew
>>
>>55755900
Fuck you, mate
That's one of my favorite EDs

True, there's lots of ops and eds I'm listening to that I don't even want to watch the shows they're in

Install linux and run windows from a vm
No more driver issues, whoa

No, try facebook
>>
>>55756293
Well thanks for your help anyway
Honestly I think this release is just too much for the X220.

720p works fine, so it's not that big of a deal.
>>
>>55756485
Link the torrent and I'll try it out, I mean, I want to be able to play shit
>>

>Installed Wangblows 8.1 on an x220 and Thinkvantage System Updater is only showing 2 drivers
I'd rather install the drivers by typing the serial number into the lenovo site and sorting by latest.

>And Wangblows Update is stuck at 'Checking for updates' for some reason
Because windows is a pile of indian shit.

It's a cat, she should have furr but for some reason she doesn't, I still love her. Everyone tells me she looks like shit but she's so fucking frindly so I don't see it

Anyway, I've watched the first ep and it played just fine. this will probably be a good time to tell you that I'm on Linux and playing it on MPV, you should really dual boot.

4 minutes in and i dont see any issues besides Xfce's screen tearing on my T420 (i7-2620m, iGPU runing dual 1680x1050 monitors, 8gb ram, SSD, but the file is on my hdd) using VLC.
>>
>>55757252

It's a good alternative but it has its defects.

The point is, if you install 7 Professional instead of Ultimate, nobody would think you pirated it.
>>
hey what was that windows program for thinkpads, like it had an option for drivers and shit. I forgot what it was called and I can't find it on google
>>
Aaaaand the second batch of X62 boards is sold out!
>>
>>55755647
I expected longer battery life, I get about 5 hours.
The laptop gets surprisingly hot unless you're in an air conditioned environment, it wont be fun.
The fans are hidden, the Pixel 2 fixed this problem by having vents. That model is much more better, I swear it gets 9 hours of battery life, the display is slightly better too I believe.v

So, I'm selling my Mac Pro and I'm about to fell in the chinkpad meme.
Question: Is the W530 too heavy to carry it daily to the Uni?
Should I try to score the W550s?
>>
>>55761010
This battery life thing is fucking with me. I bought an x220 and got a 9 cell for it, from lenovo. I don't get 9, or even 5 hours.
>>
>>55761166
does yours get really hot? mess with the profile settings a little, mine used to go above 80C and last around 2 hours, I changed the battery profile to low power or something and now it lasts like 5 hours and doesn't get hot at all, the fans don't even turn on
>>
Anyone using the fingerprint reader on the X301? I run ubuntu 16.04 and i can't get it to work, it just doesn't detect the reader, even though the hardware is supposed to be supported by the fingerprint lib mentioned on the thinkwiki
>>
hello /tpg/

i found a t520 with a 1080p screen, i7, and 128gb SSD for a good price, $200 USD

thing is, i dont know if it's worth the effort of getting. i currently have an x220 that i like, but my biggest gripe with it is the small resolution... kind of makes things difficult to work with. also, to afford the t520 i'd have to sell my x220.

is it worth getting the t520? i love the fact that it has a 1080p screen. anyone here have a t520 with a 1080p screen? how do you like it?
>>
>>55761297
Everything is entirely dependent on you, faggot.
If you don't like the small, res, by all means sell it.
>>
>>55761297
Just get a monitor for your x220 for when you're at home then. Do you need a bigger screen for the tasks you perform when you're out?
>>
>>55761401
i just need higher resolution, i have a desktop at home. i like using a higher resolution so i can keep multiple windows open, read off one and type off the other, etc

i do this on campus, so i don't have a monitor there. honestly, i'd love to do the FHD mod for my x220 but there isn't a really good writeup on how to do it, that's the only thing holding me back. i feel like 1080p would be best for my type of work.
>>
>>55761297
how about getting a job ffs
>>
>>55761269
I got it to work once on my t420 and then it never worked again.
>>
What's the cheapest 14 inch T-series with a 1080p ISP display?
>>
Ok so i got my x260yesterday I ordered last sunday, that is the best pc ive ever tried i installed arch and it's perfect it only lacks indicator leds and the i3 is fine
>>
>>55745767
im having the exact same issue on my x220, i fixed it via using WSUS Offline Update, there seems to be an issue with Windows Update these days in general for Windows 7.
>>
>>55762714

The poos want everyone to install spyware10 to the point of gimping 7

most likely ;-;
but just tryout WSUS Offline Update - it also works a fuckton faster than Windows Updates, can't believe I've wasted this much time on my previous windows installs when I could have just used this tbqh
>>
>>55762876
>>55762736
actually the only downside to WSUS Offline Update is that it won't pickup all the Lenovo stuff, just the windows updates, but applying windows updates should fix all issues with windows updates and so after a reboot you should be able to pull in Lenovo stuff via Windows updater.
