Yahoo also owns Tumblr.

Yahoo owns tons of customer data thanks to their ad services. Verizon just wants that data so they can give you advertisements and make money off that. Plus since they have your data they can figure which yahoo customers don't own any Verizon products and double dip with ads and phones/internet. Basically, it's similar to how Sprint bought RadioShack but profitable.
