i had an ati card in my first pc as well and it was wonderful, nvidia, particularly their high-end cards, are a fucking disaster to buy. the gt 260 lacked dx11 support, if you had bought an hd 5xxx at the same time it came out you would have been set. the gtx 780 which is still a monster today can't even dx12 even though it has the horsepower for current and future dx12 games. Meanwhile AMD cards that are over a year older run dx12 no issue whatsoever. Nvidia = planned obsolescence to the extreme. Unless you only buy lower or mid range cards, have a shit cpu, or don't care that you're not getting your money's worth, stay away from nvidia at all costs.

It's kind of nice to not be FORCED to upgrade before the card is too weak to run games simply because of launch errors related to them refusing to keep drivers up to date. Or at least, be able to give it away or sell it to someone who can use it when you do upgrade rather than toss it in the bin.

It's merchant madness from nvidia.

>>
How much money does AMD do off consoles?
>>
>>55713436
>nvidia gimping
What?
>>
>>55699417
Over the next two or three quarters the stock hike, continuing multiple console wins, aggressive price segment attacks and Zen's release should see a steady gain in real cash to AMD. Thus R&D money should increase (nothing ridiculous) quite well and a focus on design optimization/enhancement will bring more of the same: More in the right direction, more fixing of past mistakes, more driver optimizations, and more competitive products down the road.

>What went wrong
I assume you mean comparing the 1060 to the 480.
The only big debacle was the PCI-e overdraw "fiasco" which was fixed in a week. Solid mistake which thankfully reviewers picked up on from the start (Now if only a certain GTX cards physically permanent but unfixable mistake were heralded from the heavens the same way).
You can assume many things but the most likely are that there are moles everywhere, AMD certainly knew what Nvidia has been up to, and the 480 was pushed as hard as possible in a "guns blazing, caution to the wind" retaliatory response. To great effect I might add, since many stores report having Ten Times the 480 stock not just sold but paid for and waiting to be delivered as 1060s

>What hasn't happened yet
460/470 versus 1050 (more of the same). Vega versus 1070/1080 (unknown outcome, many in-the-biz and some in-the-know rumors of Vega being a different arch revision than Polaris). Zen performance leaks, Zen release (A solid bet is between Ivy and Haswell performance but with a weaker FPU, inconsequential for the majority of home users)

And to close, this really does feel like the 2XX/4XXX era: Price competitive mainstream parts but with no answer to the lead company's top end king. Here's hoping Vega is a contender to the 1080, we all win with good 'ol competition.

Not only am I extensively trained in Asynchronous Compute, but I have access to the entire arsenal of DirectX 12 and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable GPU off the face of the continent, you little shill. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little “4GB” card was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking wallet. The important part to me now is we are supposed to be okay with this since AMD and Nvidia are. Well i got news for AMD in this case. If they are happy with under performing gpu's due to dx12 API mainstream being path then I will gladly not use AMD anymore. I had enough of this with DX11 to last a lifetime. I don't see how one company is okay with under performing hardware due software and the other is happy with limiting a whole brand new API. If i had to guess Nvidia doesn't care about dx12 being limited right now, they love to capitalize on quick replacement intervals.

Right now i am really turned off by both brands if the dx12 future is mainstream like Timespy performance says. I am just super impressed with what Vulkan did with TSSAA and no fps loss. DX12 is looking more like a MS turd left in the sun to bake. I don't care about what's fair in a benchmark at this point, i do care though how bad dx12 is looking so far. I don't know why i am surprised MS is pretty good as sabotage.
>>
>>55699417
They cut on ROPs, smaller dies and better memory tech while raising clocks to near peak levels in order to make a card as cheap as possible.

Hopefully, Vega doesn't have the same problems since it'll need to be more expensive.

Zen is pretty much dead, Intel is sinking the prices. A 6600K only costs $210, there is nothing AMD can offer to compete with it.
>>
>>55719503
But i5s have always been in the ~200 range.
>>
>>55719556
Not the top batch. They ranged from 250 to 300.
The skylake i5 started around 250 too, it's a recent drop.

So if they release something Haswell-level they will have to sell it for 150 or lower to be successful, considering that the next gen Intels are coumng out by the end of this year. And I doubt 150- prices are possible.

intel and nvidia are botnet
get the fuck >>>/out/

>tfw not a fanboy and buy the best hardware in my price range
due to this, it's been AMD lately. but when I upgrade my cpu, I'll probably go with Intel, just because it'll be the best processor in that price range

what do people gain by supporting a specific company?

So before and after Intel illegally bribed OEMs and used a gimping compiler?

I've had a 4770, 7850, and now a 390x. Worst purchase was a gtx770. didn't run well as I expected it too.

I have a
GTX 7900
HD 4890
HD 7970
GTX 780ti

Of these in the long term both Nvidia cards where massive disappointments while both AMD cards exceed expectations.

How anyone can trust Nvidia i do not understand. AMD may blunder at times but Nvidia is down rite malicious.

Why not nvidia gpu? AMD gpus have a much higher failure rate then nvidia.
>>
>>55721066
Only because they are used more for mining and other 24/7 compute task.

Nvidia cant into GPGPU.

eh wrong, this was in OEM testing, not some douche in the basement running 100 7950's.
>>

because I got a 290 tri-x for $200CDN a year ago, and the cheapest 970s near me were $350 minimum

Global Foundries is a mistake

I had an HD 4870 which ran fine for a year or so after which I ran into a shit ton of driver bullshit and have been avoiding ATI/AMD since then because I don't have any reason to believe the drivers have actually gotten better since most AMD fans claim the drivers never had any problems.
I was really satisfied with my 660 Ti, 970 and the 1070 (well, the 3.5 thing WAS fucekd up, it just ended up having no effect at all) now and I'm not a neet so paying a little more for less hassle down the line is not a problem.

So much this. I used to have an AMD card around the F19/F20 era. Then Fedora enabled the egl code path. AMD drivers would shit the bed even though the egl code path was not the default. Just enabling support ment you booted up to a black screen. That week I went out and bought a NVIDIA card and never looked back.
