Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

best actual 14' or 15' laptop for college?
I have $200
>>
Reposting from last thread:

Tech illiterate here. Considering buying a T430 or X230 since both of them are in my price range (max 350-400€) and seem to be a direct upgrade to their predecessors in most regards. Screen and battery life is most important. Don't care about potatobility. Want to use it as learning experience.

Suggestions on which to buy?
>>
>>55665711
Alrighty, I'll be sure to ask again, thanks
>>
Guys, worth buying a t420 and replace screen to LED? So I have the perfect laptop?
>>
What options do I have for the ultrabay? The location of the cdrom on the T420 is awful and I end up hitting the eject button every time I pick it up.

Or better yet is there a way to disable the physical eject button?

Due to a seller error, I've been waiting for two weeks for my x220 to come in, but thankfully the shipping says it's set to arrive tomorrow.

Pretty bumped for a keyboard that isn't chiclet. It's coming with a 128 SSD, which I assume is in the M.2. or whatever part, so I guess at some point I'll throw in a large HDD just in case I actually manage to use up the SSD, but this is going to be a machine for schoolwork so...
>>
Which is better to conserve battery life?

Charge from 40 to 80% always or charge every time you can up to 80%?
>>
>>55667183

the x220 cant handle m.2 ssd
>>
>>55667183
its most likely standard 2.5 drive if the seller didn't specify cuz they were/are still $5 cheaper than mSATA counterpart so you gotta buy yourself standard HDD and additional mSATA drive

I want a Thinkpad P-70.

17 inch is way easier to use for me, but I'm open for a 15 incher.

Questions:

1) For a BS in Mechanical Engineering, would a M600M be enough of a GPU, or should I upgrade it?

2) Would I be able to use an external GPU through the thunderbolt 3 ports?

3) Will I be able to buy it with a crap 500 GB HDD, and then install a M.2 SSD NVMe myself?

Any advice would be appreciated.

I saw a T420 with Nvidia dedicated graphics for $120 on craigslist yesterday. I meet up with my friend so that we can take a look at it together.

The guy told us to meet at this home depot parking lot. We said sure there's a starbucks in that same parking lot where we can test the wifi and charger. He texts us back "I already told you the home depot parking lot. That's where I meet everyone." My friend, who is Russian and doesn't take shit from people, and I were pretty pissed at this point, and we were thinking it was some FOB who doesn't know any better.

We said okay we're here, and he comes 20 minutes later. He comes in a mini van that has been stripped out of the backseats and looks like a van where he puts all of his stolen shit in. It was some older white guy who looked like a casual heroin user with his thick blue sunglasses and runners hat. As he is pulling the laptop out he says "I have an AC converter in here in the back so you can test out the charging and there are numerous hotspots out here." My friend ignored it and we started up the laptop. The top and outside was in very nice condition, except for the bottom where the rubber seemed like it was ripped off of somewhere The trackpoint was missing from the laptop as well and when I pointed it out he said "oh it fell off I can go pick it up right from home." Didn't matter, we got to the desktop screen and we check the graphic properties. No Nvidia dedicated graphics.

We tell him this doesn't have the dedicated graphics. He said he ran out of laptops with those a while ago. Before I could call him out on his bullshit my friend says: "This is what we wanted and this is what you advertised." Casual heroin user responds "What does it matter to you?" My friend says "Because Im the buyer. It seems like you don't have the right laptop." We walked away and with all the red flags he obviously stole a bunch of thinkpads from a school or somewhere. He is still posting craigslist ads for thinkpads this morning too

I also know that you will have some trouble with keymapping that can probably be fixed through software.

Is there any way to reflash stock BIOS on newer models like the X230? (for the purpose of fixing a locked BIOS)

I've done hardware flashing before on older Thinkpads
>>
>>55668674
Get one of those chip clip wire harnesses and an external flasher (rPI, USB based shit, etc). Pretty much follow the instructions for Libreboot.
>>
>>55668382
>>
>>55668698
Oh, so you can still flash OEM firmware via the hardware method on newer models? I thought they would have made it more difficult for some reason
>>
>>55668668
Lite-On replaces NMB but only for the newer chiclet keyboards, I think, I'm talking about the original style
>>
>>55668732
I'm pretty sure you can. I've not tried myself, though.
>>
>>55668674
That's not how you fix a locked bios

You have to short some pins while you power on the machine which bypasses the password prompt, then you can go in and turn it off

Should be the same process as this

>x220 if you don't want to change the cpu

Realistically, should the CPU of a laptop ever be changed?
>>

I would probably get a W530 and replace it with an i5 dual core for power savings, since I only really want one for the GPU
>>
>>55668750
I guess if there is coreboot support for those models I can't see why it would not be possible

>>55668767
not that I know what I'm doing but wouldn't reflashing be a cleaner solution than shorting pins?
I don't see why reflashing stock firmware wouldn't remove the password
>>
>>55668774
Sure, if you want one it doesn't ship with.
>>
>>55668794
Reflashing doesn't work, because the password isn't stored on the BIOS chip
>>
>>55668807
Oh, shows what I know. Was the supervisor password ever stored on the SPI in previous models (out of curiosity)?

Honestly I don't know what even made you think it would affect temperatures at all. It's not like a Thinkpad's case functions as a heatsink or part of its heatsink, it's covered in plastic which, if anything at all, already serves to insulate the thing.

>>
>>55670482
I know, but i guess its because of how hot the case itself gets when on the dock or used while in bed.

>>55670512
You dont paint the keyboard. It will ruin how it feels texture wise. I guess you could rip off all the keys and spray them or something, but still.
>>
>>55667677
Good job anon, assuming that includes shipping.
>>
>>55670512
>i think the yellow is poorly done, look's like it was painter with a spray can, looks poorly done imo
This is less because it was done with a spray can, and more because the guy who did it sucked shit at painting things. You can get perfect results with a spray can if you don't suck at using one.

>how would one paint the keyboard?
Carefully. Personally I think I'd buy two new keyboards if I were to do this. For one of them, I'd just get the stickers off the keys and paint the whole thing, see how it goes. There -shouldn't- be much technology for the paint to reach and be able to screw up, but you never know.
Then if that ends up sucking, I'd carefully take all the keys off the second keyboard and paint them individually.

>>55670546
That would be because your T420 is no better than an average laptop at keeping itself cool. On my T520 I see desktop-tier temperatures, and only the bottom of the case gets even a little warm to the touch under full load. As far as the keyboard and palm rest are concerned, there's very little difference in how hot they get between full load and the laptop being turned off.

It might help for you to clean your heatsink and drop some new thermal paste in there too.
>>
>>55670652
Shipping was actually free, so yes it does. I'm getting another 4Gbs of RAM from a friend too.

I sorta regret the Pixel 2 I sold for $900 when I bought it for $530, because currently I am using a Pixel 1st gen w/ UK keyboard I got for $400. :3

>>55670749
They should be the same, magnesium finish on the outer layers, plastic on the palmrest & LCD bezels. You can peel off the paint on the exterior but the plastics have a very slight 'bumpy' texture I believe.

However, X300 has a magnesium palmrest & keyboard bezel. Look at a Z60/61 if you want to mess with the Titanium finish LCD, though those are kinda uncommon and considered desirable to collectors. Z60 uses an entirely different frame and mobo layout than 14 & 15.4" widescreen T series, I tried to swap one before, waste of time.

Not too sure on old old thinkpads but 770 & 600 ThinkPads have magnesium palmrests as well, I believe a 755/60 have magnesium palmrests. I am pretty sure 3xx, 2xx or 5xx series have plastic for the palmrests.

Among them, the T420 is probably my least favorite, but I'm not a fan of the X220 either. It really can't be overstated how terrible the T420 screen is, the screen bezels are hideous, and the plastic feels cheap compared to the T60 or W520. The X220 has questionable build quality, abortion-tier resolution, and is a nightmare to repaste. Hard to choose between the two.

Not him, but I've used an X220 (with an IPS screen and SSD) for about 4 years and never had any issues with it. I actually quite like it, and wish they'd simply make the same model but with better hardware.

I find it perfectly fine for programming, Chinese cartoons, and very light games (killing floor, tf2, MOBA's, etc).

If you're buying one now, I wouldn't pay more than 275 (CAD) for one, unless it came with a sizeable SSD, and IPS screen, and 8 gigs or RAM. Even then I'd pay at most 300.

Hey, /tpg/. Just wanted to point out that if you have to go the SharpKeys remapping route for the *30 to *20 keyboard swap, it remaps the key for every keyboard you plug in. Happened to me for another laptop I had; it didn't have a menu key so I mapped Caps to it, but found it redundant when I got home and plugged in a real keyboard. I got around this by using
>http://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=2620619&postcount=18
This remaps keypresses differently per each Hardware ID. I don't think there's any botnet, but I don't have a Wireshark or anything to confirm. At least now, I can wiggle my way around wonky notebook layouts and not have it affect any other keyboard I plug in.
>>
>>55680366
There's a much better way now anon

A modified embedded controller ROM remaps the keys on the BIOS level and makes the unmapped keys work too, meaning you don't need to touch SharpKeys or any other remapping tools, and external keyboards aren't affected

Why you don't want nvidia GPU?
>>
I know I'm going to get some shit for asking this, but here it goes anyway:

I want to buy a T series Thinkpad to replace my T61, which is starting to crap out on me. I don't want to spend a lot, but I want something that will be able to house the T61's HDD, running linux, and also another HDD to run windows, so I can mostly play some games.
By games I mean my old favourites: Portal 1 & 2, the GTA series, Postal 2 and not much else.

I'm thinking about either a T420 or a T430, with the Nvidia GPU, of course.

My question is: if I try to install GTA V on a T420 (with a 4200M), will it even work? I'm not expecting good settings, just for the game to be playable.

>Your T420 was designed to accommodate 7mm thick drives. You may be able to squeeze a 9.5mm drive into the bay but the fit will be very tight and you risk damaging either the drive or the T420 or both.

One more thing, if I get a caddy to replace the optical drive with a disk, then it should fit a 9.5mm one, right?

Are the keyboard keys easy to remove and put back on the T420? I bought a German one so I would like to switch the Y and Z.
>>
What drivers should you get for a T420 with the HD+ Display? Is there some package somewhere that you can download, or do you have to pic them one and one from Lenovos website.
>>

Just get Thinkvantage System Update and use that to download drivers

>For fuck's sake why is it so hard to find a t series thinkpad with a decent 1080p screen. The cheapest option seems to be the t450s and that's still gonna be at least £450-500. I'm jelly as fuck if you yanks and your cheap prices.
I just got my refurbished T450s from
http://outlet.lenovo.com/outlet_us/laptops/
shipped to the EU by a friend

$520 for the 1080p IPS version, 8 GB RAM and mechanical HDD.
I'll replace the HDD with an SSD tonight of course

Shipping was $60

The condition was like new. I recommed Lenovo's outlet based on this sample size of 1.

The keyboard takes some time to get used to, coming from a T400, but it's not that bad.

The IPS display is great, and brighter than the T460s too.

So if its a laptop to last through college (CE major) which should i go for, or should I buy something cheaper?

I figure I don't need too much power, but still want some incase I have to run solidworks or AutoCAD.

I'm leaning towards the T460, but I'm unsure if its overall better than T460s
>>
>>55685010

It has the same specs but can have better battery life, if you have the money to burn go ahead, you could buy an t420 or t430 and a PC strong enough to run other programs btw
>>
T460p shipped and is coming tomorrow. I'm hype.
>>
>>55681937
It already does it. You flash it and it's mapped for the X220 keyboard. Flash the original unmodified ROM to get the X230 mapping back.
>>
>>55682927
You;d need the fingerprint palmrest and the sensor itself, which are $10 each on ebay, no idea how well it works in Linux though
>>
>>55683128
Honestly you don't need any.

Windows Update gets all the drivers you need. You can get anything with "drivers" from the list.

Power Manager and Hotkeys Integration is really all you need. Everything else is just bloatware.
>>
>>55683531
It doesn't really matter. It has Nvidia Optimus so you can just use the iGPU anyway whether the dGPU is there or not, and the dGPU will stay powered off. If you're already getting a sweet deal for the laptop it doesn't really matter.
>>
>>55683618
The RMSMajestic one is much smaller and made to fit into a specific spot in the laptop. The ones you linked are probably too big to fit inside the laptop.
>>
>>55685292
Works flawlessly in linux on my x230. You just need to install fprintd and libpam-fprintd, IIRC. There was a little bit of fuckery to get it working for my greeter sign-on.

Look up the FRU part numbers online, the different manufacturers have different FRUs

Found it. For US English keyboards, the manufactures are:
45N2071 - ALPS
45N2141 - CHICONY
45N2211 - NMB
The thinkpoint module also differs between the different manufacturers as well. Chicony ones seem more sensitive.

So... I'm about to buy a X220 to fuck around with (install Gentoo w/ Openbox and use it to shitpost and nothing else) - is there any way to determine if its got the IPS panel when the seller hasn't explicitly mentioned it? Like certain features only the IPS models got or a specific production year? [image sort of related]

>>55685712
>Like certain features only the IPS models got or a specific production year? [image sort of related]
if it's in person you can usually tell
even online pictures it's pretty easy to tell TN garbage from IPS

Just ask the seller

which one is the best? I heard ALPS was the worst

All of the tablet models are IPS.

You can also try asking for the model number and look it up on Lenovo's site. Sticker on bottom of laptop, model number is next to "PRODUCT ID: "

Well, the vast majority comes from specialized businesses that sell refurbished units from god-knows-where and I really doubt they know what to look for (or care).
>>
>>55685712
Just ask for more photos. Namely the display tipped down a lot. If it's not inverted it's gucci.

You can also ask for a screenshot of Device Manager with the Monitors dropdown extended, if you see Wide Viewing Angle as the monitor name then it's IPS

NMB
>>
>>55685767
I have NMB, I used someone's ALPS. The switches are a little mushier on the ALPS, but the biggest difference was keyboard flex. The ALPS flexes a lot under even the lightest keystrokes. NMB is rock solid, although it could be the way it's mounted in my T430.
>>
>>55685957
>where and I really doubt they know what to look for (or care).

They care enough about the specs they are selling because it means they can charge more per unit

I'm thinking about buyin the real memes here (T420, T520, X220) but if the offer escapes me, a guy is offering a X61t for almost nothing.

Damn, this is harder than I thought. I've ran a couple of serial numbers on Lenovo's parts lookup site and every single one of them had a TN panel. How much do I need to spend for an IPS model anyway? Is it even reasonable to expect a good one for ~250 EUR (I'm willing to go up to 300 if it's exceptionally good)?
>>
With my school, I can get a HP EliteBook 840 G3:
- i7-6600U
- 14" FHD
- 16 Go RAM
- 512 Go SSD

For a little more than 1 200€.

I don't find 16 Go RAM nor 512 Go SSD to be necessary and I'd like an IPS screen (15.6" would be a plus).

I can get a ("brand new") T460:
- i7-6600U
- 14" FHD IPS
- 16 Go RAM
- 256 Go SSD

For 1 100€.

Both have a 3 years warranty.

Any idea for a Thinkpad with, either the same specs as the EliteBook but cheaper, or better specs and around the same price?
Or should I go with the T460?

Thanks.

>>55686189
just look for the Tablet model if you can afford it

those are all IPS
>>
>>55686229
It's dead simple if you swap the palmrest for a X220 one, since the nubs will match the slots. But for my T430, I didn't like the T420 keyboard bezel, so I had to cut down and file the nubs until they matched the profile of the nubs on the chiclet keyboard. This is totally unessecary though.

I have to make an effort to unfuck it already by replacing the chiclet keyboard and the build quality overall feels much cheaper

>>55686513
With an x220 keyboard and x230 palmrest, that is affirmative. It will not fit without filing.
>>
>>55686513
Absolutely not. 20 series keyboards have nubs that extend to the full thickness of the keyboard, as well as a fifth nub below the middle thinkpoint button. 30 series keyboards only have 4 nubs, and they're only the thickness of the keyboard backplate.
>>
>>55685010

>>55672844
>is an x230 worth the extra cash?
Not really, hardware-wise it's marginally better, design is different. CPU is better, graphics may or may not be depending on model. Resolution is still the same and may or may not be IPS.

>the x220 keyboard looks so cute!
>Can use it on the 30 as well
You can, but not 100% functionality

>i've also heard you can't use 3rd party batteries on an x230
No, you can't, the batteries have chips to verify authenticity. The x220 can use the 29++ or 44++, whereas the x230 can only use the 44++ despite the same form-factor and that they're both Lenovo batteries.
>>
>>55686584
