What is the best editor? I used Atom before but it was slow af so I switched to Visual Studio Code. I'm loving it right now and I was surprised that I've never heard of such a great editor. Are there any other editors I shoud know of before settling with visual studio code?

What was awful in particular? I only started recently but I like it a lot.

I don't do much programming except shitting out some random utility in C now and then, but I edit a lot of plaintext documents that undergo frequent revision so the built-in git with gui repo controls is nice.

All of the plugin shit that tries to make it an IDE suck complete ass though.

Vim is just a text editor that can be extended quite a bit. Emacs is more than a mere text editor, It can do whatever you want. Overall, it really depends on what you want from your text editor, I like how emacs doubles as an IDE.

Visual Studio code is probably the best GUI editor, but there's no way it'll ever be on the same level as Vi or emacs or any other serious terminal editor.
>>
Right now I use Atom because I got sucked into the Sublime Text life when I started coding. Going to start learning Vim soon if only because vi is what's built into every networking switch and embedded device on the planet so I may as well be familiar with how it works.
>>
Ed for pretending to be cool
Tecoc for when ed is too mainstream
Vi for nostalgia
Videoteco for when vi is too mainstream
Nano for pretending to be sane
Joe and ne for when nano is too mainstream
Vim for wasting your time re-aligning your tiling WM's config file
Nvi for bloated hipsters
Sandy for minimal hipsters
Atom and sublime because you can't comprehend anything but notepad keybindings
Terminal emacs for hating yourself
Graphical emacs for real work
Sam for being a major neckbeard
Acme for being an ascended neckbeard
Wily for being too stupid to get plan9port working

Vim, emacs and all that is definitely useful when you have to use the terminal for some reason (remote access, for example), but if you use those terminal based editors unironically in regular programming, you're pretty autistic.

Also, of course op is trolling about visual Studio. But atom isn't an IDE
